The God Whisperers Classic

The God Whisperers pioneered Podcasting in 1968. Bill and Craig then went on to invent the interwebs - Al Gore took the credit - until the polar caps melted and the world ended in 2018 - as he predicted in his 2006 movie. The God Whisperers Classic is the archives of the most mediocre podcast in world history which was met with great international acclaim and then the world took a collective nap out of boredom after the episode was over. Whereas Gold Bond never did send those tee-shirts to the Manly Doctors of Divinity, still believe it is the best for keeping your mailbag dry.

  1. 354

    350 - The Final Episode

After over 10 years and 350 episodes, the Manly Doctors of Divinity bid farewell to the airwaves. A little reminiscing, a little reflection, and some looking ahead to new ventures. Thank you to all our listeners and supporters.

  2. 353

    349 - Priesthood

The GW are joined by Heather Choate Davis (heatherchoatedavis.com) for a lively discussion of the “priesthood of believers.” What was once a pillar doctrine of the 16th century Reformation seems to be largely forgotten today. What happened? How do we recover it? What does it mean for the church today?

  3. 352

348 - TheoLogoi Part 2 – Who Let the Dogma Out?

The GW discuss being extoverted (Donofrio) or introverted (Cwirla) and what it means as a pastor in the public eye. They also kick the theological ball around the four corners of theology and talk about what makes doctrines and why we need them.

  4. 351

    347 - TheoLogoi – What is Theology?

After a discussion of the pitfalls of social media on theological conversation and the nature of hermeneutics (text interpretation), the Manly Doctors pursue the question “What is Theology?” and reflect on what it means when God deals with us through written texts using a soccer field analogy.

  5. 350

346 - In Memory of Eugene Peterson (1932-2018)

The God Whisperers take time out to reflect on the life and work of Eugene Peterson – pastor, author, teacher, poet, and so much more.

  6. 349

    345 - Evolving Certainties

The Manly Doctors are joined by Terry Defoe, author of the book Evolving Certainties, to discuss science and Scripture and how they are not really in conflict when we read them correctly. Warning: This episode may trigger independent thinking.

  7. 348

344 - Evolution, Cheap Grace, and Mormons

An episode that literally developed legs and  crawled out of the primordial ooze. Does Evolution and Big Bang Theory even matter to the Christian faith? Can grace be cheapened? Can we have too much grace? Plus, the sketchy origins of the Missouri Synod and the name change of the choir formerly known as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Make sense? We didn’t think so either. Enjoy.

  8. 347

343 - The Eye of the Storm

Weekly communion, assurance of salvation in view of sin, Pat Robertson rebukes Hurricane Florence, and the Florence gives him the finger, the foolishness of boycotts, comebacks by disgraced celebrities, and so much more.

  9. 346

    342 - Shark Week

The Manly Doctors of Divinity enter the shark tank of theology and discuss the Eucharist implications of John 6 along with boxing Polish nuns and a saint or sinner quiz. And sharks.

  10. 345

341 - One Scoop Over The Line

Women readers, blasphemously good ice cream, and a new take on Adam and Eve engage the Manly Doctors of Divinity.

  11. 344

    340 - Preconsecrated

In a pre-consecrated edition of the GW, the Manly Doctors discuss the propriety of pre-consecrated Lord’s Suppers, the nature of the Verba, and also miraculous hard landings of Mexican airplanes. How long do the Verba last? Can only a priest/pastor say it? What does it all mean? Does God protect us when flying?

  12. 343

    339 - Lucky Tiki VBS

The Manly Doctors of Divinity discuss illegal pop-up Tiki bars, signs, wonders, and the role of God in apparent dumb luck, and edgy alternatives for next year’s Vacation Bible School.

  13. 342

338 - Arsenic and Old Books

The God Whisperers engage in a spirited discussion on toxic old books, the meaning of “sanctification,’ an upskirt Marilyn Monroe statue overlooking a Connecticut church, and Jim Baker’s zombie apocalypse bunker in Branson.

  14. 341

    337 - Lotto Pharmakeia

The Manly Doctors take on the issues of gambling, pharmaceuticals both natural and manmade, and immigration, legal and illegal.

  15. 340

    336 - Spark A Doob

The Manly Doctors discuss the ins and outs of legalized cannabis, a punch-throwing Cyprian priest, and pistol-packing pastors in a scintillating hour of conversation.

  16. 339

    335 - Deadly Serious

Setting aside their usual hijinks, Bill and Craig talk about the deadly serious topic of suicide in light of the high-profile deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain over the past week and discuss ways in which the church, as a community of believers, can help those who struggle with depression and despair.

  17. 338

334 - What Would Jesus Fly?

A misdirected donation from a new listener prompts a lively conversation about offerings, shifting political winds, and televangelist Jesse Duplantis’ pitch for a $54 million Falcon 7X jet. What would Jesus fly?

  18. 337

333 - Three Persons, Three Uses, and Satanic Yoga

In a stunning trilogy of manly theology, the God Whisperers take on the doctrine of God’s triunity and its analogies, the three uses of the Law, and the alleged satanic associations of yoga and martial arts, neither confusing the persons nor dividing the essence.

  19. 336

332 - Warrior Women, Alien Octopi, and a Royal Wedding

The Manly Doctors engage in a lively discussion of women in the military, the cosmic evolutionary origins of octopi, and the royal wedding of Harry and Megan in a slightly overcooked episode involving Flarp. A trifecta of disturbing yet compelling talk.

  20. 335

    331 - We'll Drink To That

In an episode dedicated in memory of executive producer Rufus Donofrio, the Manly Doctors discuss the lasting effects of the LCMS’ Seminex controversy of the 1970s, a church devoted to salvific drinking in South Africa, and the organization formerly known as Boy Scouts of America.

  21. 334

    Special GW Mashup

In celebration of the Manly Doctors’ return to the podosphere, longtime GW friend Brian Yamabe (of Cwirla App infamy) delivers a 10-minute mashup of God Whisperers highlights and lowlights from the last 329 episodes. Relive the greatness.

  22. 333

330 - Return of the Jedi

The Manly Doctors return to podcasting with a retrospective of God Whisperers history, from its inception in a lounge at a pastors’ conference and its early days in guerrilla broadcasting to its corporate captivity and its ultimate return to freedom after healing and self-discovery. They relive their first “Home Schooler Alert” with Reed Lessing, answer some Mail Bag questions concerning Lutherans on Facebook and bad preaching, and round things out with a piece on a church that meets in a strip joint, aka “gentlemen’s club.” Disturbing yet Compelling™ returns to the podosphere.

  23. 332

To All Our Friends in GW Nation - Thank You!

A short thank you to all our friends who contributed to the God Whisperers Resurrection Fund. We’ll be up and running in a couple of weeks. Until then, here’s a tickler for your podcast feed.
