How Firm a Foundation
The hymn "How Firm a Foundation" was first published in 1787. It conveys God's willingness to let us "test" Him or prove Him. He wants us to know how much He loves us and He recognizes that we need opportunities to learn of His love. This is why God give us deep waters to pass through and fiery trials to face. He wants us to prove Him and prove to ourselves that He is true to His promises Things to know about this episode: - The episode is hosted by Tom. Help Thou Mine Unbelief
We read of miracles in the scriptures and we are taught that belief is how God is able to work miracles in our lives. But what if we are not sure if we believe enough to have miracles worked on our behalf? The good news is that we don't earn miracles. Instead we ask God for what we need and we humble ourselves before Him and ask Him for relief, trusting in His compassion. My Prayer Journal
Years ago someone suggested to Tom that he use a journal to record inspiration that came when he prayed. He tried this and found it hard to stay focused longer enough to do this regularly. Listening for God
When we pray, it is easy to fall into a habit of speaking to God but not taking time to listen for His spirit to impart the answers and the peace we so badly need. It usually isn't because we don't want to listen. Often it is because we don't know how to quiet our minds enough to feel like we can listen for the still small voice of the spirit. Let's learn to listen more for God's whisperings by developing the skill of mental stillness. Things to know about this episode: - The episode is hosted by Tom. Many times when we set goals we are trying to fix ourselves. We call it self-improvement or making progress. While there is nothing wrong with either self-improvement or progress, if we pursue these things because we are worried about not being good enough for others, ourselves, or even for God, we lose much of the best motivation for improvement and thus we don't move forward as fast as we'd like. In fact, it may be waiting to be found int he midst of your chaotic, never ceasing thoughts. Do you want more stillness to help you better hear God's whisperings? Alter Call for Santa Claus
The way we are encouraged to believe in Santa Claus, to believe, to put away our doubts about his existence each year bears a strong resemblance to the way we are invited to believe in and accept Jesus Christ. Without judging Santa as good or bad, we can remember that we can focus on believing in Christ more and more all year without needing to pack up the boxes and put Him away. Pass the Judgement
We just finished the season when we pass the mashed potatoes and the green bean casserole. But we haven't stopped passing that other side-dish that is so common in our lives--Judgement. Yes, we pass judgement but we also pass the judgement. Sometimes we even keep an extra helping for ourselves. There is a better way. This episode talks about a more positive approach to self-improvement. Things to know about this episode: - The episode is hosted by Julie. Contentment vs Apathy
Do you ever feel guilty for taking a day to do nothing? Do you feel uncomfortable with the idea of being content with what you have or how you look? Do you feel like it is a cop out to "settle" for less than you could achieve (or that someone else hints you can or should achieve)? There is a difference between contentment and apathy. We can work hard and achieve great things and yet be content with less than society hints we should have or be. Things to know about this episode: - The episode is hosted by Tom. Commitment and Belief
Commitment is an important part of moving forward towards our goals and dreams. Without commitment our efforts wander, starting and stopping without much progress. However, commitment without belief rarely succeeds and when our belief includes believing in God's help, all things are possible. Think on These Things - Philippians 4:8-9
In this show Tom focuses on verses 8 and 9 and the counsel the apostle Paul gives the people of Philippi. These verses add to verses 6 and 7 by telling readers what there part is in maintaining the peace they find by giving away their fears and troubles to God. These verses are about learning to think differently (which is one of the root meanings of the word repentance). Can we learn to lay aside what is negative and vulgar in exchange for things that are lovely and praiseworthy? This is the third of three shows about Philippians 4:6-9. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Read the paper, watch the news, open your news app on your phone, how much of what you see is positive? The advertising that is all around us mostly reminds of what we are not, what we don’t have, and places we have not visited. Have you ever wondered what life would feel like if more of the messaging we see every day taught us to be content, peaceful, & hopeful? That’s where The Higher Attitudes Podcast comes in. This show is dedicated to focusing on positive, hopeful, even grateful ways of thinking. Let’s ditch the lower attitudes and adopt higher attitudes. Let's learn to be happy and peaceful and then teach others to do the same. Join us won’t you?
