In this episode, I would like to share an interesting case study of the medical phenomenon caput medusae, a physiologic sign of portal hypertension. A 2020 article by Dr. Ayad Ahmad Mohammed: “Caput Medusae sign; a unique finding during abdominal examination in patients with portal hypertension; a case report.” Caput medusae refers to the physiologic appearance of superficial epigastric veins, becoming visible at and radiating from the umbilicus, and traversing across the abdomen. The term literally means head of medusa, likening this physical manifestation to the venomous snakes in place of hair on the head of the mythological gorgon. Before the earthquakes healthcare settings in northern Syria were already struggling to support the 14.6 million people urgently needing medical care. For the Week of 2/8/23: The Tewa & Changing Woman initiatives. I am excited to educate you all about the fine initiatives of the Changing Woman Initiative and the Tewa Women United as possible unconventional, non-traditional models for Native American maternal-fetal care in the United States: Changing Woman was founded in 2015 with the goal of building a new birthing facility specifically for Native women.  As that work proceeded, she began caring for women in their homes, which helped her better understand some of the barriers to receiving proper care throughout the birth process. Today, the organization focuses on three areas: reproductive health, home births and an easy-access clinic that offers immediate care regardless of whether a woman has proof of insurance.  Tewa Women United provides doulas at low or no cost and offers prenatal and postpartum care. It was founded in 1989 and based in the ancestral Tewa homelands of northern New Mexico. For the Week of 1/31/23: The Inaugural HIM Podcast Experience Food Justice Segment. The Three Sisters: Native American Companion Farming Treasures in Nutrition and Food Justice  The Native American Three Sisters- Are corn, beans, and squash crops.  Plant a Three Sisters Garden: Corn, Beans, and Squash | The Old Farmer's Almanac By the time Europeans reached the shores of the Americas, the Indigenous peoples of the northern continent had developed food systems that efficiently utilized their abundant landscape to provide a relatively nutritious diet.  Three sisters' agriculture also developed as a central food system in both the North and the Southeast. The Iroquois and the Cherokee called corn, bean, and squash the three sisters' because they nurture each other like family when planted together. This is referred to as companion agriculture. Agriculturalists placed corn in small hills planting beans around them and interspersing squash throughout of the field. Beans naturally absorb nitrogen from the air and convert it to nitrates, fertilizing the soil for the corn and squash. In return, they are supported by winding their vines around the corn stalks. The squash leaves provide ground cover between the corn and beans, preventing weeds from taking over the field. These three plants thrive together better than when they are planted alone.
