the ignorant savants
by Byron Haskins
NO AI music here - (I do use AI generated images for cover displays) my comps are a mix of VSTs and actual instruments - AI has said that "the ignorant savants is an eclectic musical project blending elements of blues, alternative rock, jazz, and folk .... tis actually this old guy using crude multi instrumentalist tools to explore the edges of musical mannerisms I’ve picked up over decades. I would add the label "thoughtful chill". My compositions are mostly layered extemporaneously, though some is written outright and then performed. My tools are - GB, a midi keyboard, a Shure mic, several guitars, a kalimba, a cheap harmonica, a plastic drum, household noises, a simple guitar interface, a love of serendipity, and enough lack of knowledge of musical theory plus a distaste for the popular. I choose influence over profit. What to listen for: atmosphere over spectacle, development over repetition, coherence over surprise, and intuition over formula ... and topics one doesn’t discuss in

king of crickets

little puddles
an interpretation of a poem published in 2011 in my anthology "Lake Affect: Collected Poetry" https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0139IXMFO named "Spring 5/3". Little wings speak flicker and glow the moon rises high above I put roses in wearing heavy leather gloves palms sweating wild violets sing bees dance with me I smell colors and my toes tingle in the little puddles left behind by my hose warm winds you bring I love you Spring. © Byron Haskins, 2011, all rights reserved.

I rarely do covers, but my youngest son, an accomplished singer suggested I learn this song because he thought of my lyrics when he heard it. This is my version. BTW, I absolutely am in awe of the work of Mon Rovia.

cultural spa time
extemporaneously Culture spa Time to go to the spa Time to purge my body, spirit, and mind Time to go to the culture spa Time to kick the system Before I go deaf, dumb, and blind All my life I tried my best To take in all that’s good I ate my fruits and vegetables Avoided processed foods But everywhere I look around There’s emptiness on display A diet of commercial feelings Fed to me every day Toxic, sweetened emotions Manipulative devotion Political snake-oil potions Sold as cures for the nation Mogging, maxxing, self-abuse Punch-me—in-the-face-for-beauty delusions Every kind of crazy notion Masquerading as anomie solutions All my life I tried my best To do what’s kind and good Said my prayers, bit my tongue Like they schooled us that we should But everywhere I turn my head regressive religion and culture rules Not rogue enough, not mean enough To qualify as “cool” Not selfish, sharp, or ruthless Not chasing power’s wake Not hollowed out and grifting Every person for my take Jesus Christ unplug the mirrors the dopamine machines Drain the noise from the bloodstream Wash eyes clean I don’t need another branding to tell me who I am I’m washing out the poison Humankind is not from a can. Time to go to the spa Time to purge my body, spirit, and mind Time to go to the culture spa Time to kick the system Before I go deaf, dumb, and blind Lyrics by Byron Haskins © nPoet9 Publishing 2026. fly pigs
A pregnant noblewoman is approached by a beggar and her children, whom she dismisses, making some comparison of the beggar's children to pigs as she does so. The beggar curses the pregnant noblewoman, and come the birth of her child it is a girl, healthy and perfectly formed in every respect other than having the face of a pig. Such is the fate of the children of persons who wear all the signs of not caring about the suffering around them.

The poetic influence : "If you want to talk about what looks to me like despair and pessimism, it isn’t that a couple random people on both sides, as you know, have picked up guns. It is that the people in actual power who are sane and are clear thinking are doing almost nothing differently. They’re failing and rethinking nothing, at least not on any profound level. And I actually find that very worrying. I would like to see right now, in the rooms I am aware of, much more profound forms of restrategizing going on.”- Ezra Klein The musical influences: Gil Scot-Heron, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan and James Brown.

You can help the frogs return by following these steps: 1. Preserve wetlands and establish gardens where frogs can live. 2. Avoid using pesticides in water sources. 3. Choose soaps and cleaning agents that help conserve species. Some soluble cleansers will maintain water safety.
