179 | Coach Carrie and Cindy Talk the Talk (Again)

"It's so important to pay attention to how you are talking to yourself, because your words influence everything. So you really need to understand your self-talk and start to dive into it a little bit and know, OK, is the way I'm talking to myself right now—is that helping me or is that actually hurting me?" Imagine you're walking past two sets of coaches and athletes on the tennis court, track, or soccer pitch. One coach is yelling at an athlete for her poor performance, telling her it's all her fault and she'll never improve. The other is offering encouraging words, letting the athlete know she may have fallen short this time, but if she tries again, success is achievable.  Which coach would you rather play for—and which athlete do you predict will do better in the long run? Most of us would gravitate toward a leader who's empathetic and builds athletes up rather than tearing them down. But so often, and especially when we're injured, we serve as our own nightmare coach—blaming ourselves for any setback and constantly pointing out our own shortcomings. Coach Carrie sees this all the time in her clients, and in this replay of an episode from season 5, we're dedicating a whole episode to turning this equation around. Your self-talk matters, and there are many ways to notice that inner dialogue and shift it so you're nourishing your inner athlete, rather than feeding the monster of self-doubt and criticism. 178 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question on Dating While Recovering from Injury

"How do you date as an injured athlete when you identify strongly with specific sports and are drawn to others who also do those things … but you can't do them at this time? It becomes a source of anxiety and insecurity. Like, who would want to date a fellow runner who can no longer run? Or someone who seems to be perpetually in physical rehab?"—Evan   Navigating relationships can feel difficult as you're riding the roller coaster of injury recovery, Coach Carrie explains in this week's listener Q&A. And there are good reasons to consider not dating for a while: For example, you don't want to spend the time and energy, or you're feeling angry or jealous.   But if you're truly seeking companionship, it might just be a better moment than you think to get out there, she says. After all, your physical ability as an athlete is only one of many things you have to offer.    Because you know what it means to strive for big goals, you also understand how to support someone else in doing so, something athletes tend to appreciate in a partner. If you find a person you're compatible with when you're injured—something that can happen to any athlete or human, at any time—you can feel a lot more confident that your relationship can go the distance (pun intended).   Resources/links: Injured Athletes Club merchandise Injured Athletes Club Facebook support group A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 177 | Olympic Ski Jumper Matt Petri on Pivotal Moments and Controlling the Controllables

"  I got to the bottom after that jump and I started having thoughts of—'I've come this far, it's all gonna slip away if I can't compete and do well in this competition.' And as I walked across to the bottom of the jump to go back up the stairs, I basically said, 'I'm not gonna let that happen.'"   The first formative moment of Matt Petri's ski jumping career was probably when a coach convinced him to try the sport, rather than pursuing only alpine skiing. At that point, the event went from the scariest thing he'd ever done to something he couldn't wait to do again.   The second was at the 1984 Olympic Trials, when he bounced back from a bad first jump to take his longest leap ever, along with first place and a spot on Team USA  headed to Sarajevo in 1984.    But then there was another, when a serious crash before the Games even began that year threatened to take all he'd worked for away from him. On this week's episode, Matt shares what all these experiences taught him about the importance of focus and mental health—lessons that shaped his life, both on and off the slopes.   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 176 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question on Embracing Change as a Masters Athlete

"How do I adjust my training mindset now that I'm a masters athlete? I have a hard time accepting that my body is no longer 20. I'm 35, about to turn 36." —Kelly   Society often tells us that getting older is something to be feared and refused—think about the concept of anti-aging. For athletes, there's an added layer of performance changes as we move into the masters categories.    The problem, Coach Carrie says in this week's Q&A episode, is that aging isn't an optional activity. By fighting against its reality, we often keep ourselves miserable and stuck. If instead, you accept that your body is shifting and has different needs and vulnerabilities, you can then take active steps to make the most of your current capabilities.    Rather than comparing yourself to others or to a past version of the athlete you were, seek clarity. Then, the focus isn't on how you measure up, but on what you need to make meaning of your athletic experience. That choice—to define what success means to you, and celebrate it—is always yours to make, and gives you the freedom to enjoy new and glorious paths forward.   Resources/links: Aging and Athletic Performance: Injured Athletes Club Webinar Recording Cindy's article in Runner's World: I Compared Myself to the Runner I Used to Be—I'm Learning to Let Go and Move Forward   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 175 | Elite Bench Presser Tony Carlino on Resilience, Recovery, and Raising the Bar

"One thing that helped me—and I don't know if I really thought about doing this, I think I just did it when I was in the hospital—was just taking it a day at a time. Taking the day for what it is, not trying to look too far ahead. Obviously, you want to hit that goal of getting better, but take the day for what it is and what you can do that day."   As one of the world's most accomplished equipped lifters, Tony Carlino is used to hoisting huge weights over his chest and on his back.    But in 2019, he faced a challenge no gym session could have prepared him for: A bout of swine flu that led to a lengthy hospitalization and a 16-day medically induced coma. Afterward, with much of his muscle melted away, he had to relearn to walk before he could even contemplate lifting again.    When he did go back, the bar alone felt heavy. He wasn't sure he'd get back to competing, but he did, within five months. And just two years later, he officially benched 1,000 pounds for the first time, a feat he's repeated several times since (including earlier this year at a meet called Holy Wars, where he also squatted more than 1,000 pounds—the second person ever to do both at the same equipped meet).   Resources/links: Tony's Instagram and TikTok Everstrong, his clothing and supplement company   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 174 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question on Coping with Feeling Left Out

"I'm feeling left out, although I know it's not intentional. I joined a racing team this year, but have had to withdraw from several races already due to recovering from a bone stress injury. I did too much, too soon last year, and it finally caught me right after team training started—go figure!   There's another race this weekend that most of the team is running, and I'm always happy to support them, but it also sucks feeling like a wasted spot on the roster and not being able to attend any group runs or races while I'm recovering. Do you have any advice on handling this?" —Jacob   Even if your teammates are welcoming and supportive—which, Jacob told us in a follow-up message, his definitely are—it isn't easy to feel a part of things when you're sitting on the sidelines.   In this week's listener Q&A, coach Carrie validates those feelings of anger, disappointment, and even guilt and shame. But as she reminds Jacob, being a good teammate is about far more than what you contribute to the race times or final scores.   While you're healing, your role shifts from training and competition to taking care of your body. Often, there are ways to do that that deepen your connection rather than strain it—for instance, joining for the team warm-up, doing your rehab exercises alongside them at practice, or simply showing up to cheer and support when it counts.   Resources/links: Episode 139 | Professional Soccer Player Civana Kuhlmann: Strength in Vulnerability   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 173 | Swimmer Lyn Jutronich on Surviving a Shark Attack and Moving Forward

" It's not going to be a linear journey, which is something that's been hard for me to wrap my head around. I have bad days and I have good days … I've had to learn that sometimes it's two steps forward, one step back."   Lyn Jutronich has been swimming since she was a child in the Chicago suburbs, and as an adult living near San Diego, she fell in love with the open water. But in November 2022, she experienced every swimmer's worst nightmare when a juvenile great white shark attacked her.   With help from her swimming partner, Lyn returned to shore. Her wounds healed in the weeks and months afterward. But what surprised her most were the psychological symptoms, including social anxiety and what was eventually diagnosed as post-traumatic stress disorder.   Time and treatment helped her manage. Then, on the third anniversary of the attack this past November, what was supposed to be a reclaiming of the day—and a triumphant return to the ocean—turned into another trip to the hospital with serious injuries. Now that she's starting down the next road to recovery, Lyn graciously shares the surprising approach that's helping her take things day by day and why she feels compelled to tell her story.   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 172 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question on Pain Management and Recovery

"I am nearly 8 months post-op after a femoral osteotomy to correct my knee. One of my biggest challenges is trying to figure out if my knee hurts because it 'should' as part of my recovery—or if it hurts because my body isn't used to this level of training after 7 months of not doing much. Can you help?"—Aaron   Sometimes, pain sends a clear signal to your brain that there's tissue damage or danger. But when you're recovering from an injury, those messages can get muddled, with an overactivated central nervous system firing off warnings even though there's nothing structurally wrong. And emotional stress, so common among injured athletes, can make the pain feel even more intense.   As Coach Carrie explains in this week's listener Q&A, one of the biggest challenges injured athletes face is telling the difference between pain that's a normal part of recovery and sensations that mean you're doing further damage.    Getting to the bottom of it is an individualized process that should involve your healthcare team. One thing many athletes find helpful is to enlist their physical therapist in writing a specific, personalized pain protocol—a way to plan what you might feel and how to react. Breathing exercises and soothing self-talk can also help reduce panic and tension, so you can make a clear, informed judgment about how to move forward.   Resources/links: Worksheets for Rebound, which include a pain log   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 171 | Author and Athlete Dimity McDowell on the 27th Mile and Charting a New Path Forward

" You don't want to think about a friend dying or going through a divorce or anything like that—you kind of don't want to even put that energy in the world. Same thing with running. You don't want to think about what it looks like, but the reality is, most of us are going to have to think about that. Not everyone can stand on the podium at age 70."   Dimity McDowell was first on our show back in 2022, when she'd just written a series of articles for (the late, great) Women's Running magazine about what happens when you can't run anymore.    As she describes in her return appearance this week, the overwhelming response to those pieces convinced her that there was more to the story. And a few weeks ago, her new book—The 27th Mile: How to Smooth the Rough Transition Out of Your Running Years—arrived to give athletes a literal handbook for how to move on.   Though it's focused on running, the advice she gives in this episode, and the book, can apply to anyone contemplating a shift in their athletic identity. She doesn't gloss over the grief—in fact, she explores different models of it, and how writing a running obituary can serve an important role. But she also makes it clear that there's a life of adventure and possibility on the other side, if you're patient and deliberate about getting there.   Resources/links: Dimity's Instagram The 27th Mile: How to Smooth the Rough Transition Out of Your Running Years Many Happy Miles Her previous appearance here, episode 75: Another Mother Runner's Dimity McDowell: Adventures Ahead   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 170 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question on When Grief and Gratitude Collide

" How do I cope with knowing that I may never get back to where I was—that this might be a permanent change for me?" —Emily   Many athletes—whether they're professionals or amateurs—have a strong athletic identity. When that's threatened by injury, especially if it's a permanent shift, it's normal to feel frightened and unmoored, Coach Carrie shares in this week's listener Q&A episode.   Whether you have to give up your sport altogether or must adjust the way you participate, you should allow yourself to feel grief at the path you're no longer taking. But even as you mourn the loss, see if you can also channel gratitude, tapping into all the things your participation brought you. Those two emotions can indeed co-exist, she points out.   From there, Carrie shares a lesson from author Dimity McDowell—a preview of next week's episode!—about finding a new pursuit, and a reminder that how you feel right now isn't necessarily how you'll feel forever. Even if it doesn't seem possible, hold open the hope that you'll find a new way to fulfill yourself going forward.   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 169 | Triathlete and Coach Angela Naeth on Creativity, Curiosity, and Compassion

"If I had to choose one injury or obstacle as the most difficult, it's really hard for me to do that because each one was very different in and of itself. I look back at them, and I'm honestly quite grateful I've been through it all, because it's changed who I am and it's made me who I am. You learn a lot when you're down and out."   Angela Naeth has been racing as a pro triathlete since 2008, and added gravel racing in 2022. In that time, she's had plenty of success, reaching the podium more than 40 times in 70.3 and Ironman events and placing in the top 8 at Ironman World Championships.    But she's also gone through her fair share of setbacks, from Lyme disease to stress fractures to, most recently, a posterior tibial tendon tear. Through her years of experience—and, she says, having gone to therapy after the end of a relationship—she's learned how to work through her emotions and accept where she is, then stay curious about what's next.   All that has led her to a place where she's thriving in her coaching, continuing to perform at a high level as a master's athlete, but also knowing that no matter what happens, she can keep challenging herself and finding new ways to grow and feel gratitude.     Resources/links: Angela's Instagram Angela Naeth Coaching The Middle Miles, the podcast Angela hosts with Amy Woods (including an in-depth episode about her hip injury)   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 168 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question: Tell Yourself Something Worth Believing

" My surgery was a success, and my doctors have given me the go-ahead to play again next season, but it's been over a decade since my initial injury, and I needed to hang up my skates. I've been sidelined for about 11 years.  I was always a really aggressive player, and I've never been one to shy away from a confrontational situation on the ice. But after my injury, I'm worried that I'll be too nervous to really dig in and go full throttle when it comes to checking or anything that brings me too close to the boards. I DESPERATELY want to play again, but I know myself well enough to know that I'm going to get incredibly frustrated and angry if I'm not able to play at the same caliber that I'm used to. Can you help with the mental block I'm experiencing around returning to my sport?" —Caitlyn   Whether you've been out for a few months or more than a few years, returning to sport after injury can come with its fair share of anxiety.    You're not the athlete you were back then, Coach Carrie says. That can be a challenge to your athletic identity, but you can take active steps to reduce the dissonance. For one thing, set new goals based on where you are now, so you're not continuously comparing yourself to the you of the past.   Also, pay attention to the stories you're telling yourself about your performance—there's always more than one narrative available. The one you choose to repeat affects your feelings of motivation, self-belief, and confidence. And if you find you'd like a little extra support, it's never a bad idea to reach out to a certified mental performance consultant or sport psychologist for guidance through the process.   Resources/links: Introduction to Mental Training for Injured Athletes e-course Coach Carrie's Goal-Setting Crash Course   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 167 | Coach Carrie and Cindy Label Your Emotions

" When you take a moment to pause and label the emotion you're feeling, you're asking your prefrontal cortex to get involved, which pulls the activation out of the amygdala where your brain is processing threat or no threat. Instead of being overwhelmed by the physiological experience of the emotion. It creates psychological distance so you can experience it from a less threatening vantage point."   Here at the Injured Athletes Club, we talk a lot about the roller coaster of emotions. Today, on this host-ful episode, Coach Carrie guides us through some of the ups and downs you're likely to feel along the way.   Emotions—which are actually different from feelings—are messengers, if only we can listen to them, she explains. Pausing to get super specific about what you're feeling can prevent you from getting overwhelmed by what can feel like a monster hiding under the sand. Once you know what you're dealing with, you can decide how to move forward.   From there, she talks through a few specific emotions injured athletes often encounter, including denial, shame, and guilt. And then there's hope—which, though it sometimes feels like it, shouldn't be a four-letter word.   Resources/links: Worksheets from Rebound (including the Emotion Decoder)   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 166 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question: Sustaining Motivation and Energy During Recovery

"I just had my 12-week post-op follow-up with my doctor. It was a good appointment and things are pretty much where they are supposed to be at this stage. But I've been hitting a wall in my PT in terms of fatigue and overall enthusiasm. Most days, my energy is very low, and I'm trying to incorporate more rest and sleep in as much as possible.    The doctor said at this stage—between month 3 and 12—is where the real work begins in terms of strengthening and getting back to where I was before, and hopefully stronger. So I'm wondering if you have guidance on keeping sustainable energy and output going long term, and how to recover more between sessions so I can make the most of the time in and outside of workouts. It's gotten a lot more strenuous over the last few weeks, and I'm having challenges keeping up with it."  —Darren   Often, we start rehab or physical therapy with energy and even excitement—we're starting the road to healing, and stepping up to the challenge. But as the weeks and months drag on, Coach Carrie explains in this week's listener Q&A, it's normal for that to wane.   To keep things sustainable during this phase, it's important to consider all the ways you're expending energy—everything may take more of it than it does when you're healthy and training—and make sure you're balancing that with recovery, she shares. And there's more great advice on keeping yourself going, including lessons from both a rubber band and your dog or cat.   Resources/links: Episode 158, Coach Carrie Answers a Question: In It for the Long Haul   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 165 | Author and Athlete Chelsey Klein on Grace, Survival, and Letting Go

" I've had to learn how to ask for help. I am grateful for my independence. I'm grateful for the fact that if I want something, I go get it. And my work ethic—I work in sales and my success of being an athlete, I owe it to that. But at the end of the day, there is that understanding of there's a difference between giving up and surrendering."   Chelsey Klein is a lifelong athlete—and no stranger to injury, which ended both her pursuit of gymnastics as a child and her collegiate volleyball career. But during the summer of 2020, during the height of the pandemic, she faced a trauma she never would have imagined.   When she was hiking on Mt. Shasta with her boyfriend, the unthinkable happened. He fell, then she did, and it took hours and a series of small miracles to get her off the mountain alive. Her loss was immense and her injuries significant, but on the other side, she's found strength through grace and meaning in sharing her story—which she does in this week's episode and in her memoir.   Resources/links: Chelsey's new book Beyond the Edge: A Survivor's Tale   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 164 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question on Balancing Healing and Life Goals

" I'm feeling like my injury has really held me back in life. My first two years of college, I was trying to survive school while recovering from a car accident. I've needed every extension and have had many surgeries after that, which have affected my schooling and life in general. Now I'm ready to transfer from my community college to a university, and I don't have all the right classes for the degree I'm going into. I feel like this injury has just ruined me, and I'm not sure what to do." —Rylie   Injuries can be devastating at any stage and time. But in some cases, they deeply affect other areas of life in ways that can feel deeply unfair. In this week's listener Q&A, Coach Carrie first of all expresses deep sympathy and empathy to Rylie and other athletes who find themselves in such a long-term, difficult recovery period.   As challenging as these situations can be, Carrie suggests some ways to shine a light into the darkness. Most important, she says, is to try not to time-travel to the past or into the future—instead, calmly bring your focus back to what's in your control right now. From there, you can consider the actions you can take today to bring about the tomorrow you hope for.  Resources/links: Past episodes Other things we mention A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 163 | Marathoner Leanna Scaglione on Running Through Life's Challenges

" Whatever you're feeling, whether it be anger, hatred, sadness, disappointment—it's okay. You're allowed to feel those things. That is valid. But just know that this situation— yes, NF is a lifelong diagnosis, and not having a cure, it does change your life trajectory a little bit. But it doesn't dictate how you have to live your life."   Leanna Scaglione was just 16 years old when what the aspiring ballerina thought was an injury from dancing turned into something she never could have imagined—surgery to remove a spinal tumor that left her temporarily unable to walk. Soon afterward, she was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2, which is now called NF2-related schwannomatosis.   This lifelong condition causes non-cancerous tumors to form throughout the body. For Leanna, that's meant brain surgery to remove a tumor that resulted in facial paralysis; several clinical trials of medications that have helped, but also have brought unpredictable symptoms; and now, the need for another surgery on her spine.   After her first surgery, Leanna not only walked again, she danced. And during the pandemic, she began to run. Eventually, she built up to the marathon, which she ran with the Children's Tumor Foundation's NF Endurance Team—she talks in this episode about the inspiring moment she realized that was a possibility.    Leanna just completed the Tokyo Marathon, which brings her one race closer to her goal of becoming the first athlete with NF2 to run all the Abbott World Marathon Majors. She runs because it gives her joy, agency, and community; it's how she refuses to let NF2 control her life, shows others what's possible with a chronic illness, and carries forward both her athletic identity and her family's legacy of endurance.   Resources/links: Leanna's Instagram The Children's Tumor Foundation   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 162 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question: Rebuilding Trust in Your Body

"How do you navigate phantom pains and constant re-injury fears after recovering from a bone stress injury?" —Marija   Fear is one of the brain's ways of protecting the body when it's injured. But often, our anxiety lingers long after it's useful. Our bodies and minds don't always recover at the same rate, Coach Carrie explains in this week's listener Q&A (that's why deliberately working on your mental skills is so important!).   Phantom pains and fears of re-injury are totally normal after a bone stress injury, she points out. To reset your nervous system and ease excessive fears, she recommends focusing on breathing.    You can also coach yourself through in the second person, telling yourself you're safe and strong. Or, you might try experimenting with naming your injury, creating a bit of psychological distance that turns an anxiety-provoking moment into a thoughtful conversation with your body.    Resources/links: Sign up for our mailing list to get the free mp3s, including diaphragmatic breathing   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 161 | Triathlete and Author Roderick Sewell on Defying Odds and Creating a Legacy Beyond Sports

" Representation does matter. Because I've been to Zambia, Ethiopia, and Kenya with this same team, and when they see somebody who looks like them and is also walking on prosthetics … this child might be 18 and has never had a prosthetic. Now they're like, 'Oh, I have the motivation to not only try it, but know that I can live a normal life."   On Oct. 12, 2019, marathoner Eliud Kipchoge broke the two-hour barrier in the marathon distance. The next day, his compatriot Brigid Kosgei shattered the official women's marathon world record, running 2:14:04 in Chicago. Between the two, another historic athletic event occurred in Kona, Hawaii. Roderick Sewell, a Paralympic swimmer, finished the Ironman World Championship. In doing so, he became the first double above-the-knee amputee to cross the line of the grueling endurance challenge.   In some ways, he barely had any time to train, as he shares in this week's episode—he'd been invited to compete via the Challenged Athletes Foundation only three months prior. Although he was already an elite swimmer, he didn't have a bike, and his longest run was a half marathon (half the distance he'd run in Hawaii, 26.2 miles—after a 2.4-mile swim and 112-mile bike).    But in other ways, it was a mission Roderick had been preparing for his whole life, from the time he was born without tibias and his mother made the difficult decision to have his legs amputated. He writes about their relationship and her sacrifices beautifully in his recent memoir, Iron Will. Through the book and our conversation, it's clear that his accomplishment in Kona is more than a personal victory. Along with the rest of his athletic career and his life, it's a gift back to her, as well as an example to others about what's possible.   Resources/links: Roderick's Instagram His book Iron Will: An Amputee's Journey to Athletic Excellence No Legs, No Limits: The Roderick Sewell Story, a GameChange Original film about him   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 160 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question: Handling Unwanted Advice

"The most frustrating thing is when older women in their 70s and 80s keep pestering me when I'm injured. I call them the 'I-told-you-so ladies.' I feel like they're giving me unsolicited advice and discouraging me to go back to lifting. Sometimes their comments hurt. One lady is a retired bodybuilder and a personal trainer in her 80s who had a hip replacement and the other lady is just an average Joe who doesn't lift weights but got a knee replacement. Please help me how to deal with those two! I just hate it when people in general give me unsolicited advice." —Nicole   Everyone is entitled to their own opinions—but when they have unwelcome ideas about your recovery and then share them with you, the result can impact your mood and mindset. In this week's listener Q&A, Coach Carrie offers some insightful guidance on exactly how to cope with people like the "I-told-you-so ladies".   You can start by realizing that often, their advice has way more to do with them than it does with you. Then, you can apply a mental filter so your brain perceives it as merely an opinion rather than a threat. From there, you can decide how to respond based on how you want to feel after the conversation. She even offers a few simple scripts that may help you defuse tense interactions, so you walk away feeling positive and confident.   Resources/links: Buy our book Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries, and turn to page 135 for the Found in Translation exercise Download the worksheets that go with the book   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 159 | Paralympic Athlete and Mental Coach Lacey Jai Henderson on Grief, Retirement, and Growth

" I think this is also what helps with the athlete transition—and even when you're dealing with injury and you're going to recover—is your relationship to the sport. Because that's what I realized: There's this feeling of loss and grief, and it's like somebody died, but at the same time, it doesn't really actually have to be like that. I've learned that sport's always gonna be in my life … but my relationship with it changes."   For years, Lacey Jai Henderson found joy and purpose in sport. Not long after losing her leg to cancer at age 9, she was enthralled by the movie Bring It On, and her parents encouraged her to pursue her goals despite the obstacles. So she took gymnastics lessons, tried out for her high school cheerleading team, and made it, then continued to cheer at the collegiate level.   After graduation, Lacey transitioned to para track & field, quickly setting records and making teams. Soon, she'd made a career out of elite sport. It took her all over the world—including to the Paralympics in Rio—and gave her a sense of purpose and identity.   But eventually, the grind and the power struggles wore her down, and she knew it was time to move on. The retirement process was like an unraveling, she explains. On the other side, she shares just how much she learned about identity, mindfulness, and more along the way—lessons that serve her well now, in her career as a mental performance coach and a broadcaster.   Resources/links: Lacey's Instagram Video about Lacey from the Portland Timbers Cindy's article in SELF about retiring Paralympians, featuring Lacey   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 158 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question: In It for the Long Haul

" How can I be resilient in a long-term recovery program?" —Kim   Recovery always takes longer than you want it to, because you don't want to be hurt in the first place. But some rehab periods are lengthier than others, and that can be physically and mentally exhausting.    To cope, Coach Carrie stresses in this week's listener Q&A, remember that staying resilient isn't the same as being relentlessly positive. You'll have ups and downs, and times when you have to come to a newfound acceptance of the process.   Luckily, she has tools for doing so, including using the three Rs ( regroup, reset, recommit); bringing some novelty into your routine; and creating reward loops. It's also helpful to periodically take a look back at how far you've come—it will remind you of how much progress you've already made and give you strength to keep going toward a brighter future.   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 9 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 157 | Coach and Elite Runner Laura Thweatt on Rebuilding and Reinvention

"That injury was one of the most psychologically harrowing experiences of my career, just figuring out how to navigate that space, how to eventually see it as a superpower … if I hadn't gotten that injury, I wouldn't have been able to rebuild my body in a way that allowed me to come back a completely different athlete. I think because of all the work I had to do in the gym to address things I had never addressed my entire career, coming off of that gave me longevity."   Elite runner Laura Thweatt had a lengthy career at the top level of the sport—while running for Saucony for more than a decade, the 2:25 marathoner finished fifth in the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials, earned three US cross country titles, and made five US teams.   But she also had many injuries, including osteitis pubis, a painful inflammation in the joint between the pubic bones. Recovery was long and difficult, but ultimately remade her as an athlete. That journey—along with other setbacks she's faced—taught her about standing up for herself, adjusting training to her needs, and practicing patience in the process.   Now, she's retired and embarking on the next phase of her career, coaching other pro runners (including New York City Marathon champion Hellen Obiri) with the On Athletics Club in Boulder. Her experiences give her credibility and competence with her athletes, helping her create a space for them to navigate injury and thrive. Looking back, she's grateful for all she went through, knowing that it brought her to a place where she can still play an important role in the sport and its future.   Resources/links: Laura's Instagram Why Do I Keep Getting Injured? 156 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question: How to Cope with Shifting Timelines

" How do I deal with expectations around timelines?" —Every injured athlete, ever   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries. And for our season finale, she tackles an issue that's come up from more than one person: how to manage when recovery takes longer than you'd like.   So many injured athletes have had the experience of latching onto an initial timeline given by a doctor, physical therapist, or other medical professional—then feeling let down and defeated when their bodies have a different idea of the pace of healing.   As Coach Carrie says frequently: " Your recovery never goes as quickly as you want it to because you don't want to be injured in the first place." But through acceptance, patience, and loosening your grip on your expectations, you can honor what your body truly needs and move forward toward your rebound.   Resources/links: The Injured Athletes Club journals   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 155 | Volleyball Player and Dietitian Tatum Vedder on Nourishing Your Recovery

"  Surgeries one through three, there is still this fear around weight gain and therefore restriction. And I think part of me wants to know, is that a major factor in why I didn't heal well? I'm not going to dwell on that or guilt-trip myself over it; it's in the past. But it was also an opportunity for surgeries four and onward, to say: 'Let's take a different approach. Let's nourish to heal. Let's not feed to skate by.'"   Tatum Vedder was heading into her last year of collegiate volleyball, playing in a co-ed tournament, when she took a rough landing and had to be carried off the court. What she thought might be a couple of seasons away turned into six surgeries and what she eventually came to see would be a lifelong change.   Tatum had already been studying nutrition, but it wasn't until she began this ordeal that she had an aha moment about the impact of fueling on injury recovery. She learned to shift from a place of fear and restriction to one of compassion and nourishment. Not only did that improve her healing process, it shaped her career—now, she's a registered dietitian who specializes in helping other injured athletes nourish their comebacks, too. Her story touches on identity shifts, asking for help, managing shifting timelines, and ultimately finding equilibrium through life's ups and downs. 154 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Kat: Having Radical Honesty with Your Coach

" I've unfortunately faced a series of surgeries and setbacks over the last few years. While I feel like I have a supportive group of friends, I don't feel like my primary coach has been that understanding of the mental toll that this has taken on me or how to navigate a game plan through my recovery, even though she's successfully done that in the past with me as injuries have come up.  She doesn't feel approachable to talk to and rarely reaches out to me. While I know she isn't my therapist, I feel like I should be able to have honest conversations with her. When I'm not injured, I normally spend several hours a week 1:1 with her during my lessons. Every time I've approached her to sit down and discuss goals, she has objected saying that we cannot set goals with the unknowns of injury and recovery. I don't know if I need to sit down and have a conversation, or just find a different coaching team, even though we've worked together for over 10 years. Any suggestions on how to navigate this?" —Kat In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.    Kat isn't alone in having conflicts with a coach during an injury—it can be particularly challenging when someone you're counting on to support you doesn't show up for you in the way you'd hoped.   Navigating these dynamics may require a hard conversation and what Coach Carrie calls radical honesty: Explaining clearly how you're feeling and channeling curiosity and non-judgment to find out her side of the story, and how you can both move forward.   Resources/links: Our book Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 153 | Elite Runner and Coach Becki Spellman: Embracing Your Best Each Day

" It really helped me as a coach to be able to look at my athletes and remind them, it doesn't have to be about a PR, doesn't have to be about the best day you wanted, but it can be—if you're healthy—about the best day you have that day. And that can be celebrated, that can be fun, even if it isn't the outcome you would've ideally written in your book."   Becki Spellman has had a long, successful career in distance running—she qualified for her first Olympic Marathon Trials in 2008 and her fourth in 2020. In that time, she's dealt with her fair share of setbacks, including two Achilles surgeries, diastasis recti, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, and more.   As she shares in this week's episode, she's come to realize that the ups and downs are all part of the sport. As an athlete, her injuries have taught her about her body, her motivation, and ultimately, her resilience. As a coach, she's learned how to guide others through both the postpartum period and injury-related setbacks, helping find the root cause of their problems and rebuild so they can get back to doing what they love.    Becki is on the upswing now—she just won the Cap City Half Marathon on April 27 in 1:23:09. But at this point, her race times don't define her; showing up, even when you're far from your best, can be just as joyful and rewarding, she's found. (And, she's also found the LEVER system to be a critical part of both her rehab and her training—she shares more about how she uses it and why she continually recommends it to her athletes.)   Resources/links: Recording of The Injured Athletes Club Recovery Summit: The Athlete's Toolkit   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 152 | Coach Carrie Answers Two Questions: Don't Play the Self-Blame Game

"With overuse injuries especially, how do you help injured athletes recognize what to take ownership for, and what was out of their control? For example, one's weightlifting form may have led them to injury. Shame and guilt can be common emotions here, which are not helpful to our recovery, but how do we recognize what causal factors to take ownership of in a healthy way?" —Clark   "If a series of acute injuries are a consequence of a chronic condition, how can you ever live without fear of reinjury or, perhaps worse, self-blame? Asking for a friend." —Jennifer   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries—and this week, it's a twofer, with questions about exploring your own role in your injury   It's common to search for answers after you get hurt, and while it makes sense to consider the factors that contributed, self-blame and self-flagellation do nothing to speed your recovery. Instead, they produce feelings of shame and a sense of being stuck in the past.   Instead, Coach Carrie recommends reframing injury as an inherent risk you face as an athlete. Have compassion for yourself, knowing that of course, you would've made different choices if you knew in advance what the outcome would be. And, she suggests ways to rebalance fear of re-injury by being clear and deliberate about how you're rebuilding.    A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 151 | Paralympian Ryan Medrano on Visualizing Success—then Living It

" That's how I learn life. I look at it, I visualize myself doing it, and then I execute. And if it doesn't feel right, I can feel it. I can see it, almost like a third person's view. That's the way I've approached life; that's the way I've been able to really reel in on what I'm good at and what I'm not good at."   Ryan Medrano has faced his share of challenges—he was born with mild cerebral palsy, which caused motor and cognitive delays, and was often bullied as a child because of it. But as he learned to walk and read social signals, he gained knowledge about himself and the world that would eventually allow him to excel in sports and life.   He met previous podcast guest Noelle Lambert when both were cast members on season 43 of Survivor. Noelle—who was already competing in para track & field —convinced Ryan he, too, should return to the sport (he'd run in high school) at the elite level. And within two years, he'd won a silver medal at World Championships, gold at the ParaPan American Games, and two silvers, in the T38 100 meters and 400 meters, at the Paralympics in Paris.   All that success came despite frequently competing in pain related to his disability—his mental game, including his use of imagery and self-talk, has long been incredibly strong. But as his athletic career continues, he's learning more about his body and what it needs to recover well and feel good. And along the way, he shares his passion with the next generation through his work as a motivational speaker.   Resources/links: Ryan's Instagram, TikTok Episode 145 with Noelle Lambert    A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 150 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Kathy: On Having Patience for the Long Haul

" How do you stay patient when the doctor says you're doing too much? Mentally I get so down." —Kathy   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.    This week, she empathizes with Kathy's conundrum—most injured athletes aren't happy with the pace of their recovery, because they don't want to be injured in the first place. But patience is essential, and the way to cultivate it is to recognize it for the strength and power that it holds.    Critical steps include letting go of comparisons and judging yourself not on where you hoped you'd be or where others are, but on where your body is today, right now. Breathe, focus on what you can control, and adjust your goals as needed to match your current reality, and soon enough, you'll find yourself soaring beyond them.   Resources/links: Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries  A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 149 | Hockey Player and Marathoner Thomas E. Smith on Becoming What's Possible

"What went through my mind—I was 19 at the time, my birthday was the prior month—was, oh my goodness, is my life over in terms of being able to live my dream? Because hockey, for me, wasn't just a sport. It was a gateway to do better in all facets of life."   Tom Smith doesn't like the word "impossible." After all, time after time, he's beaten the odds. After a paralyzing spinal cord injury during a hockey game, some doctors didn't think he would walk again—but he found a team that believed he could not only walk but skate. Nine months later, he returned to the ice.   His extensive rehab strengthened his body so much that he had no more risk of another injury than any other athlete. But the unthinkable happened, again, when he hit the boards during hockey practice. He found himself back in the hospital relearning to walk, having injured a completely different part of his spine.   Once again, extensive therapy restored much of his function. Then, to complete what he calls his "unwanted hat trick," a car accident on the way to physical therapy damaged his thoracic spine.    It took three years, but he learned to walk once again; in the process, he found his life's purpose. Now, he's the co-founder and president of the Thomas E. Smith Foundation, which works to change the lives of those living with spinal cord injury and paralysis. And earlier this month, he walked the Boston Marathon for the seventh time, raising awareness and funds for paralysis along the way.   Resources/links: Tom's Instagram The Thomas E. 148 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Whitney: Rejoining the Group Ride

" When you're injured and beginning to rejoin group rides/workouts, how do you let other riders know you're not at 100%? I'm thinking specifically of gravel and mountain biking. I have trouble clipping out quickly, and am currently overly cautious. I want to ride in the very back, but sometimes there are other people ALSO trying to ride in the back. I know people don't want/need to hear my 'woe is me' injury story, but I also don't want to be a hazard!" —Whitney   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries. This week, she addresses returning to sport, and how to do so safely and respectfully when other people are involved.   Coach Carrie applauds Whitney for her courage in getting back out there and her conscientiousness in being aware of others' needs. Balancing it all out might take a little coordination and communication before the ride, either electronically or in person. This can feel uncomfortable at first, she acknowledges—but in the end, it's the best way to clarify expectations and help everyone have the best day possible.   Resources/links: Recording of The Injured Athletes Club Recovery Summit: The Athlete's Toolkit   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 147 | Coach Carrie & Cindy Explore Your Identity

" When you give yourself permission to explore your identity, you will start to realize that being an athlete is an important part of who you are, but it is not all that you are. When you develop other areas of your identity, it can sometimes open up your performance in ways that were never available to you before."   As we discuss frequently in The Injured Athletes Club, injury brings a rollercoaster of emotions. But often, one of the most destabilizing feelings is the question of identity: Who am I without my sport?   In this host-ful episode, Coach Carrie explains how common it is for injured athletes to realize they haven't worked on developing any other parts of themselves—or any other coping mechanisms—beyond their sport.    A strong athletic identity can be an asset for performance and for injury recovery, but an all-encompassing one can stand in the way of reaching your potential. Coach Carrie explains some of the ways to tell the difference. And, she offers both permission and a blueprint for finding the parts of you that will allow you to truly shine, inside your sport and out.   Resources/links: Coach Carrie and Cindy Go FAR Pro Runner Millie Paladino: Climbing the Mountain of Recovery Professional Soccer Player Civana Kuhlmann: Strength in Vulnerability Gymnast and Personal Trainer Mia Lazarewicz: On Identity, Hope, and Humanity   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 146 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Allison: Coping When Recovery Feels Overwhelming

"Besides feed the athlete/feed the monster, are there other ways to reframe and build confidence with that day-to-day overwhelm in month 3 and beyond?" Allison   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.  This week, listener Allison wants advice on self-talk and other confidence-builders as she moves into the long-term stretch of her rehab—and Coach Carrie delivers advice that will help any athlete riding the emotional rollercoaster of a lengthy recovery. 145 | Paralympian Noelle Lambert: Breathing Life into a New Identity

"  I woke up in the hospital and told everybody that this isn't gonna define me. I'm going to be playing lacrosse again. But there was always that what-if in the back of my head; I didn't really know if it would be possible. Having amputees sit across from me and hearing everything that they've been through … they were telling me that I'd be able to live an active lifestyle. I would be able to do whatever I wanted to with my life. And if I really wanted to, that I would be able to play lacrosse again."   Noelle Lambert was a collegiate lacrosse player at UMass Lowell when she had a moped accident that changed everything. Her first thoughts, as she began to wrap her head around what happened, were of whether she'd have to give up sports—which, up until this point, her life had revolved around. Her family and team rallied around her, and she had special visitors in the hospital: Survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, who'd lost limbs and gone on to live active, full lives. Their example encouraged her, and though it took hard work, expensive equipment, and an emotional breakdown she talks about in this episode, Noelle would eventually return to playing lacrosse at the Division 1 level. After graduation, she transitioned to para track and field, swiftly breaking records and earning trips to the Paralympics in Tokyo and Paris. She's also dabbled in snowboarding, been a contestant on Survivor, and has started her own non-profit, the Born to Run Foundation, which provides active prosthetics to others. She's had plenty of self-doubt along the way, as she shares, but she's learned to turn it into fuel for each new adventure.   Resources/links: Noelle's website, Instagram, and TikTok  The Injured Athletes Club Facebook support group   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 144 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Emmie: On Anger and Failing Relationships

" Just after recovering from being hit by a truck over the summer and breaking a bunch of bones, I got to start running again only to slam my ankle into a table and now I can't even walk. It's possibly just a bone bruise but the pain is radiating through my entire leg and I'm so angry this happened to me just after I got better.   Everything is just fifty thousand times worse. I don't get along with those closest to me, I have so much more conflict with family and friends because nobody understands what I'm going through and nobody is even that nice. Does anyone else feel like their relationships all turn into s--t when they get injured?" —Emmie   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.    This week, listener Emmie shares her challenges with her friends and family as she deals with a setback in her recovery. Coach Carrie explains how anger is like a mushroom—both have deep and complex roots—and why digging down is important, not just for your relationships but for yourself.   She also advises on how to ask for the help you need and what to do when those around you can't provide it. Sometimes, it's because they simply don't understand, but they'll listen and learn. In other cases, it's beyond their capabilities. But that's why it's critical to build a whole team of support to buoy you through the darkest days.   Resources/links: Past episode: Coach Carrie and Cindy Build Your Team   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 143 | Physical Therapist and Strength Coach Susie Spirlock: On Dropping the Comparisons and Training for Life

"  The biggest change that I've had to make in myself is, you don't always have to be progressing. I feel like there's this huge push to be able to run faster, run farther, lift heavier, just do more all the time. But it doesn't necessarily have to be that way to reap all the benefits of health and fitness that come along with cardio and with strength training."   Physical therapist and strength coach Dr. Susie Spirlock has always been a healthy, active person. But after she got sick with COVID in the fall of 2020, everything changed; her resting heart rate soared, she lost fitness and muscle mass, and her missing sense of smell and taste made it difficult to eat.   Some—but not all—of those symptoms faded as she recovered, and she had to work her way through the complex medical system before getting a startling new set of diagnoses. At the same time, she was starting her own virtual physical therapy and rehab practice, Move Your Bones, and posting educational content on social media.    All this made for a lot of cognitive dissonance and self-doubt. But step by step, with flexibility and grace, she rebuilt her fitness routine to meet her biggest goals: Training for life. Although the physical and psychological challenges aren't over for her, she's learned to adapt and thrive, and her practice teaches others with injuries and illnesses to do the same.   Resources/links: Dr. Susie's Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube The website for her practice, Move Your Bones How to Safely Exercise With POTS, According to Experts: an article Cindy wrote, quoting Dr. Susie, for SELF Navigating the Medical System webinar   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Jennifer: Getting Back Up to Speed Post-Injury

"How can I cope with treadmill anxiety? Coming off of a mild ankle fracture, my first few weeks I was back up to speed. Lately, as soon as I go anywhere over a jog, I feel panicky, like I'm going to fall and have to slow down. I feel relatively sure it is all mental—but I'm wondering if you have any tips." —Jennifer   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.    This week, Coach Carrie addresses Jennifer's question about coping with treadmill anxiety as she returns to running. The reaction to increasing speed and intensity is an understandable one, she notes—the brain is trying to protect the body. And it's possible to work with your brain, not against it, to move forward.   To do so, start where you do feel comfortable and coach yourself forward. Provide reassuring messages as you gradually pick up the pace. Take time to make sure you're breathing. And have patience—your confidence will build as you reconnect important pathways between your brain and body.   Resources/links: Download the recording of The Injured Athletes Club Recovery Summit: The Athlete's Toolkit   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 141 | Pro Runner Millie Paladino: Climbing the Mountain of Recovery

"Actionable goals build. It's a mountain—recovery is a mountain. Think about the stops on that mountain that you need to make to get to the top."   Millie Paladino had a successful, relatively injury-free collegiate career in running at West Virginia University and then Providence College, where she ran distances from 800 meters to 3,000 meters and was an all-American in the mile.   She turned pro and joined Team New Balance, and in 2021, made the final in the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in the 5,000 meters. But in the lead-up, a slowly developing injury began worsening, until in 2023 she had extensive surgery to correct a problem called Haglund's deformity, a bony growth on the heel that can damage the Achilles tendon.   Her recovery was longer than anticipated, changing her goals and challenging her spirit. But even on the more difficult days, Millie found ways to show up for her teammates and herself, developing a whole new appreciation for the person she was off the track. She invested in her relationships and even went back to school for urban planning (tune in to her about her cool running-related school project!).   Resources/links: Millie's Instagram Download the video for The Injured Athletes Club Recovery Summit: The Athlete's Toolkit A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 140 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Ava: Coping with Loss and Confusion

" I tore my ACL last April; it's been very challenging. Do you have any ideas on how to make the recovery process fun? Also, why do I feel so lost and confused without my sport—what should I do with this feeling? —Ava In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.  This week, in response to Ava, she reiterates one of the key messages of The Injured Athletes Club: That you are still an athlete, and recovery is now your sport. And the first part of that recovery is feeling your feelings, not pushing them aside or denying they exist. To help, Coach Carrie recommends writing down your thoughts (in an Injured Athletes Club journal, if you like!).  As for adding fun to your routine, she suggests asking your PT if you mix up your exercises a bit. You can also set specific goals in rehab—ones that excite you—and plan celebrations for when you hit them. Finally, Coach Carrie suggests finding a goal buddy, who can make your journey both more exciting and more meaningful as you go through the tough stuff together. 139 | Professional Soccer Player Civana Kuhlmann: Strength in Vulnerability

" I don't really want to be who I was before I was injured. In a lot of ways, I'm thankful to a place that just completely broke me, just brought me to some really low points. That's when I was able to grasp my faith or what it was, which is my personal worth. It has absolutely nothing to do with a soccer field or anything of the sort. Just learning that my worth and my fulfillment comes solely through my faith has been something that will go so much farther through life than soccer ever could."   Civana Kuhlmann started playing soccer at a young age and quickly excelled, consistently playing on the youth national team beginning in eighth grade. From childhood through her sophomore year at Stanford, she faced no serious injuries.    But that all changed when she tore her ACL during preseason before her junior year. After surgery, she had to support the team in a whole different way as they reached, and then won, the NCAA championship.     After that, Civana went through several additional procedures for her meniscus and hips; she's now had a total of seven surgeries. Throughout, she faced pivotal moments of learning to advocate for herself in the face of physical pain. As skilled as they are, doctors aren't inside your body, she points out—athletes must trust their intuition and communicate their needs during recovery.    Through her physical and mental setbacks, including the emotional impact of losing her friend Katie Meyer to suicide, Civana learned to redefine herself on and off the pitch. But though she realized her worth had nothing to do with her skills as an athlete, her love for the game persisted. Ultimately, she was drafted into the National Women's Soccer League, where she's currently a free agent.    Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and free, confidential support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.   Resources/links: Civana's Instagram and TikTok The first annual Coalition of Athletic Communities for Mental Health conference on Feb. 26-27, which Civana is helping organize   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 138 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Josée: Managing Jealousy and Burnout

" I have had the worst luck in the last two years. I had a knee replacement in April 2022 for a left knee that had at least 6 scopes over a 10-year + period and it was finally ready to be redone. At last, I would be pain-free. I worked extremely hard to rehab so I could get back on my mountain bike and on the ice. I did, eventually, but with a constant nagging pain. It turns out I had a fungal infection in the joint from the first surgery and now I am facing two major surgeries and possibly another knee replacement after that. I know you have a bunch of podcasts out there with athletes and their stories, but those types of stories don't make me feel better, they make me feel jealous of their teams of helpers and everything else I don't have. Maybe I am just so frustrated and tired of hearing about all the happy-ending stories. I know I have to keep positive and put in the work, I just feel exhausted. Rehab has been my sport for two years... any suggestions? I am open!" —Josée   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.    This week, we hear from listener Josée about struggling to absorb other athletes' success stories. Coach Carrie reassures Josée that all these feelings are valid and normal, even when it's no fun to go through them.   Taken the right way, these emotions can serve as messengers, Coach Carrie continues—pointing the way toward an area in which you need more support during your recovery. She also explains the concept of psychological flexibility and how accepting that you're not always supposed to feel positive can, somewhat paradoxically, make the harder times feel easier to bear.   Resources/links: Navigating the Medical System webinar   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 137 | Gymnast and Personal Trainer Mia Lazarewicz: On Identity, Hope, and Humanity

" Anybody I've met since I got hurt, I feel like they don't know me and that they can't know me. For people that I've become really close to since I got hurt—it almost hurts me to know that this person won't actually ever know who I am or who I was. They're meeting an entirely different person … there's a before and after, and a massive wall that separates them."   As a seasoned personal trainer and co-owner of Amplify Fitness, a gym in Boston, Mia Lazarewicz is used to helping athletes and adult fitness enthusiasts on the road back from injury. However, little could prepare the lifelong athlete for her own life-altering accident—breaking both legs in a gymnastics flip gone wrong in 2023.   In the immediate aftermath, Mia faced uncertainty and anxiety. As the days and weeks wore on, she struggled with shifts in her identity, not to mention the financial repercussions of medical bills and keeping a small business afloat.   But though there have been many dark moments, she found joy in striving, humor in her struggles, a deep sense of gratitude for her community, and fulfillment in unexpected endeavors—including writing a book, Becoming a Personal Trainer. And though she still isn't sure how much of her previous abilities she'll recover, she's never short of new goals that keep her striving (up next, maybe: a pull-up competition!).   Resources/links: Mia's Instagram, website, and book The Medium post referenced, about her accident: A Comprehensive Review of Shattering Both Legs A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 136 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Olivia: Supporting Your Team While Healing

"I am a soccer player, and I tore my labrum in my right hip. After trying physical therapy for 4 months, I ended up needing surgery. I am a couple months post-op, feeling much better now, and can see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, however I am still having trouble being around soccer. Every time I go to support my team, it doesn't even feel like mine anymore. I'm very excited to play again, but I'm scared that I will have been left behind and scared I'm not going to be the player I was before. How can I cope with the fact that I'm most likely not going to be able to play for the next 6 months and how can I get to the point where I can be around soccer again without being heartbroken?" —Olivia   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.    This week, she addresses a dilemma faced by Olivia, a soccer player. Coach Carrie assures her—and all the listeners—that it's perfectly normal to feel both supportive of their team and heartbroken about being unable to participate fully in their sport. This duality of emotions is part of the journey, and understanding this can aid in emotional healing.   Coach Carrie urges athletes to remember that they are still an essential part of their team, even if their current role is different. As she explains, focusing on recovery is a vital contribution to the team. While it might feel like you're not contributing in the usual way, dedicating yourself to healing is indeed a critical and supportive part of team success.   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 135 | Triathlete Lynn Rogers: Beyond the Finish Line

"  I never lost my ability to breathe. I never lost completely my ability to swallow. We had to adjust things for a little while. But I am a huge believer that being as fit at that moment as I was going to be all year—I needed that to get through what I got through and to be able to get up and moving again so quickly."   Lynn Rogers had completed one IRONMAN triathlon and was training for another when her hands started to go numb. Next, it was her feet and her tongue. In the end, she'd be paralyzed from the chest down—the consequence of a progressive, chronic autoimmune disease called chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP).    Lynn entered rehab at the very hospital where she was working as a brain scientist, and though she regained her ability to walk and eventually to run, that was just the first step along a very long and bumpy road.    Through it all—successful treatments and failed ones, daily symptoms like numb and tingling hands and feet interspersed with more serious flares—she's continued competing. But now, her training is infused with a far greater purpose. She credits the fitness and functionality she had when she got sick for facilitating her recovery, and the joy and community she finds in sport for making each day all the more meaningful.    Lynn is an ambassador for Athletic Brewing, which in 2024 released an incredible documentary called Inches to Miles that chronicles her journey (and that of two other amazing athletes) to IRONMAN Lake Placid. In this episode—and the film—you'll learn the meaning behind Lynn's powerful mantra, "This is what we're doing now" and truly understand how, when it comes to chronic illness, there's always another chapter to the story.   Resources/links: Lynn's website, Instagram Inches to Miles trailer and full movie A Runner's World article Cindy wrote about Lynn in 2018   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 134 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question from Laura: Juggling Work and Recovery

" My injuries led to major surgery, a hip replacement. I have really struggled with being on my feet all day, fatigue, and not feeling even close to 80 percent at work.    I just learned I will have two unrelated surgeries, and the thought of healing all over again in my stressful and physically demanding job has caused me to 100 percent regret coming back early from hip surgery. It seems hard to believe that being on my feet all day is harder than advanced physical therapy. Have you heard of athletes with this experience?" —Laura   In season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast, mental skills coach Carrie Jackson answers a question every other week about the mental side of overcoming injuries.    This week, she responds to athlete Laura, who is struggling with fatigue and regret after returning to work post-hip replacement. Coach Carrie explains the impact of work stress on recovery, emphasizing the importance of taking the necessary time off to heal properly.    She advises athletes to communicate with their healthcare teams and employers to make adjustments that support their recovery, highlighting the importance of self-care and managing expectations during the healing process.   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 133 | Olympic Beach Volleyball Player Casey Patterson: New Ways to Win

" Now I have to take this as a challenge: How do I have this elite-level B game that is almost indestructible, where I know I can get the job done in a maybe a different way, but just as efficient … and that's where athletes get the most gain in their mental capacity and their ability to win and their consistency is understanding that they can have that elite-level B game. They can beat anyone without having to feel 100%. And so that's kind of where I would go."   Casey Patterson's journey through professional beach volleyball was marked by persistent injuries, most notably a left ankle that he estimates he sprained more than 50 times. Early in his career, while transferring to play at BYU, a meniscus tear threatened to derail his dreams—but contrasting experiences with different doctors taught him valuable lessons about the power of positive communication and hope in recovery.   Throughout his nearly 20-year career, including competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics, Casey developed a unique approach to managing injuries. Rather than letting them defeat him, he reframed them as challenges, pushing himself to excel even when things weren't perfect. With support from his family, including his wife and children who helped keep victories and defeats in perspective, he learned to adapt and find different paths to success.   Now retired from professional beach volleyball and serving as an AVP commentator, Casey shares his hard-earned wisdom about injury management and mental toughness with others, particularly his own children. As an ambassador for BetterGuards, he advocates for injury prevention while helping athletes understand that success isn't just about being at peak physical condition—it's about building a strong foundation and finding ways to maximize whatever percentage you have to give.   Resources/links: Casey's Instagram and Twitter/X BetterGuards website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X Watch Casey play!   A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! 132 | Coach Carrie Answers a Question: Bec's Rebound

" How does one find self-compassion when you've been through this too many times and understand the importance of the beginning phase while also itching to get out of it and back to the activities that bring me joy?   I know all the usual tactics: time with friends, using other activities (music, podcast, drawing), resting, lifting upper body and moving in whatever way I can that doesn't jeopardize the surgical area, reframing, CBT, DBT, etc. But I still feel a bit lost." —Bec   It's our very last episode of the season—and a fitting Q&A to end on, as Coach Carrie fields a question from an athlete who's been through more than her fair share of surgeries (50, to be exact).   Coach Carrie uses a personal example to illustrate how even if you know all the tools to use, it's still important to be diligent in implementing them. She talks about one of the cornerstone lessons of her work with injured athletes—Go FAR. She delves deeper into exactly what self-compassion means, and how to truly turn your empathy and love back toward yourself when you're hurting.   There's also a surprising mention of frog legs and a special soup—and stick around till the end for a very special guest you won't want to miss!   Resources/links: Episode 105: Carrie and Cindy Go FAR (Again) MASH Morale Victory Left Hand (very special hat tip to Jeremy Noessel!) 131 | Coach Carrie Answers (More of) Your Questions on Recovery, Cross-Training, and Moving On

"If one already has a good physical therapist, what are the benefits of a personal trainer when recovering from an injury or surgery? Is it just more money or can a personal trainer actually be a value add?"   "How do you balance being smart about prevention without letting worry of re-injury consume you?"   "What is the best way to recover from a VERY torturous PT session? Mental and physical. Also, more info on using blood flow restriction for recovery."   "How can I trust that my crosstraining really works? And how can I let go of the fear of not recovering? I struggle with the feeling that I have lost all the success that was coming for me."   "How many injuries do you incur and fight back from before you just give up?"   Coach Carrie has been tackling listener questions all season—and this week, she responds to not one, but four queries from Injured Athletes Club members out there.   She covers the best way to build confidence in your recovery, whether that's assembling a top-notch team or celebrating small steps. She discusses fear of re-injury and how to calm down your nervous system after a tough PT or training session.   And, she talks thoughtfully about the very hard decision some athletes eventually face: How to decide when it's time to move on. The answer involves getting deep about why you loved your sport in the first place, then giving yourself grace and patience as you work through whether you can fill your bucket with other options.   These questions come from five individuals but the answers have something for everyone—so don't miss this one!   Resources/links: EDGE Athlete Lounge Episode 32: Cindy and Carrie Travel Through Time   You can subscribe to The Injured Athletes Club on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Audible, Amazon Music, or wherever you get your podcasts, and if you like what you hear, please leave us a rating or a review in Apple podcasts.
