#062 Lies vs Truth With Jessica Hottle
Well helllooo friends! It’s been a few months since I’ve released a new podcast. I’ve been hearing from so many of you asking when new ones would be posted. COVID shut down the space where I recorded podcasts. But I now have a home studio and I look forward to having more guests on the show! If you want to take advantage of all the things I’ve been doing on the podcast break … sign up for my email list here. I send a quarterly update about the things the ministry is doing. 2020 has been jam-packed with good stuff for you to take advantage of. I’ve been teaching through online events and as a guest on some podcasts too. Plus I launched some mentorships to help people grow in intimacy with God and hear His voice. Those will launch again soon and insiders get first dibs on the very limited spots. My guest today is Jessica Hottle. As a faith-based fitness coach, podcast host, speaker, and author, she teaches women how to dismantle the lies that keep them from healing and wholeness. She believes it’s time to patiently run your race of grace towards freedom in spirit, soul, and body, as you partake in the journey of undoing and becoming who you are in Christ. If you’ve been listened to past episodes of this podcast you know that I love to help people hear God’s voice and a big part of that is because He helps us by uncovering lies and replacing them with His truth. That is a key tool for walking in freedom. Jess is so aligned with this message and brings a fresh perspective to dismantling the lies and walking in the power of truth. Jess and I are doing something really fun … you’ll hear part of our conversation here on the Jill Monaco Show and the rest over on her podcast What’s God’s Truth. #061 Getting Naked Later (for singles) With Kate Hurley
Are you one of the singles who need to feel understood? How do you process the hardships in your life alone? Do you wonder why there are so many singles who are looking for community but not a lot of places to find it? My podcast guest today with Kate Hurley will make you laugh at the silly things singles hear and be touched by her struggles with depression and chronic sickness. Kate Hurley was a touring musician for 14 years, playing everywhere from castles in Germany to villages in India to 15,000 people hippie gatherings. She has made 5 solo albums, including an upcoming live worship album. Her voice ushers you into the presence of God. I have her album on repeat. She had a popular blog on singleness for many years, and wrote a book called “Getting Naked Later: Making Sense of the Unexpected Single Life.” (formerly Cupid is a Procrastinator.) Both titles just crack me up. And it reflects the witty person Kate is too. Today we talk about singleness but if you’re married don’t tune out because Kate is now dating and has more to say about being in a relationship. This is a perfect podcast to share with a single friend who needs to know they are not alone in their struggles with being single. Kate shares her struggles with being single with chronic illness, her fight against depression, and how she’s encountered the love of God in amazing ways. She will share some biblical insight from her book Getting Naked Later, why she wrote this for singles, and what God has taught her about not being able to have children of her own. #057 Obedience Over Hustle with Malinda Fuller
Do our dreams really require endless hours of hustle in order to get them? Or do we pray and leave it up to God to open doors? Even if it’s a little of both – pray and work toward our dreams, how do we partner with God and not go off on our own? How can you discern the difference between godly obedience and selfish ambition? If you have a dream then I bet you get what I’m talking about …you want to have the courage to surrender to His plan and His timing—to choose obedience over hustle. I’m so glad there are people like Malinda Fuller who can help us navigate these kinds of questions. She challenges us to join the counter-cultural movement of choosing surrender over striving. Throughout scripture, we encounter individuals who had to face the hard reality that their dreams and timelines weren’t God’s best plan. By exploring these biblical narratives alongside her own personal stories of radical obedience, author Malinda Fuller encourages readers to respond to the questions God asks each of us: “Will you trust Me? . . . Will you do what I’m asking you to do?” In today’s podcast we will talk to Malinda about how she learned obedience over hustle and how we can too. Malinda is a bold communicator who is passionate about thriving families and helping people grow as disciples of Jesus. #056 Saying Yes To God With Andrea Coli
Learning to say “yes” to God is a muscle we can grow … especially in uncertain times. How much free will does God give us? Can we miss His plan if we choose to go a different route? Does God use our ideas and let us add on to His? Learn how the improv tool ‘yes-and’ can be used as you grow in faith and open doors of opportunity! I’m excited to introduce to you my guest, Andrea Coli. She has a Masters Degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. She is also is a pastor, speaker author and …wait for it … comedian. She has been described as having the ability to transform a room into a fun atmosphere while enriching it with the Truth of God’s word. She uses her background in improv comedy and her biblical knowledge to inspire others to discover God’s unique call for their lives. Andrea is enthusiastic, inspirational and relatable. Whether you are laughing, crying or a bit of both, her sense of humor will capture your attention and then lead you on a journey to the heart of the message. We had an awesome chat about how she is using improv as a way to say ‘Yes AND…”. She uses improv as a way to express the idea that God wants us to remain open and flexible to His plans. Knowing that you AND God can write your story – together. It creates a life of freedom as you explore all the possibilities God has for you. Andrea has tested and lived this out … in 2003, she moved to Las Vegas and had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the cast of The Second City’s “Scriptless” an all-improved show on the Vegas Strip. Now she ministers at CrossWinds Church in the San Francisco Bay Area as a Teaching Pastor and as part of the Creative Arts Team. She partners with her husband Chris, who is the Senior Pastor. Have you ever struggled to love yourself? Maybe you aren’t sure what makes you special or really understand what it means to see yourself as God sees you? Do you have trouble being authentically you? My guest today is Natasha Bure. Natasha is a 21-year-old actress, social media influencer, singer, YouTuber, and author. She has appeared in films such as Hallmark’s Switched for Christmas, Faith, Hope, Love, and her upcoming film, Home Sweet Home. She is the author of her book “Let’s Be Real,” giving tips and advice for young girls going through the teen years. Natasha is going to share about living authentically and how to be the best version of yourself. We will talk about the pressure to be someone you’re not and what to do about it. Especially in a social media-saturated world. We also chat about how she learned from her parents (Candice Cameron Bure.) how to be herself and how she hopes to help teens embrace who they are in her book, Let’s Be Real. We also talk about her new movie Home Sweet Home .. which I’ve had a chance to preview. It’s a sweet story of a young woman discovering who she is. The spring 2020 release is a faith-driven romantic film for all ages. The film also stars actor, model Ben Elliott (The Lying Game-ABC Family TV series). She plays the flirtatious barista Victoria who is bored with her social butterfly lifestyle and longs for real love. When handsome Jason walks into her coffee shop, she turns on the charm, but he doesn’t respond to her flirting like men usually do. When she discovers that he runs a ministry that builds affordable housing, she decides to volunteer. Victoria shows up to volunteer looking more like a model than a construction worker. She quickly realizes that it’s not going to be easy to fit in with this crew of experienced workers or to get Jason to ask her out on a date. When he proves to be immune to her tried-and-true techniques, Victoria is nonplussed. Since flirting is not going to work on this guy, she researches both “how to act like one of them, a Christian,” and “how to build a house,” so she can give the appearance of belonging. Her new approach gains her some ground until she meets the single mom who will own the house they’re building, her eyes are opened. Jason is there to serve others, while she has just been getting in the way. I hope you enjoy the chat with Natasha! #051 Finding Courage To Build God’s Kingdom With Julie Holmquist
Julie Holmquist loves to see people awakened to their part in God’s story. She knows each one of us is called to uniquely express who God is to the world. She champions others who are bravely stepping out of their comfort zones to build their “portion of the wall” in the kingdom. Julie wants others to know that encountering difficulties in our callings is not a sign we are doing it wrong or that we’ve heard God incorrectly. But building God’s Kingdom requires courage. In studying the book of Nehemiah, Julie’s discovered a few ways the enemy attempts to thwart God’s plans in our lives as believers called to do great things for God. So how do we get more courage to do the things God has called us to do? How should we respond to the things the enemy throws at us in order to get us to quit? Get ready to be soooooo encouraged by Julie’s wisdom! LISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE VIA ITUNESLISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE VIA GOOGLE PLAY Julie Holmquist is a blogger and encourager of women. She’s been through her own trials and has seen God develop a depth in her that comes out in her writing. Julie has been married to her husband, Giff, for almost 21 years. Together they have four boys (yes, four)! Their induction into this parenting gig began with twins! Next, they have a son who has special needs (autism, mentally handicapped, seizures, and other health issues). And then they had their little caboose. She and her family live in the Charlotte, NC area. What We Talk About In This Episode Why it takes courage to walk in our calling. The importance of dependence on the Lord when we are in a battle. How Nehemiah got the courage to build the wall (it has to do with what he drank!) What ways the enemy comes against our calling and tries to intimidate us. What discouragement has to do with the chatter we hear in our minds … and how to shut it off. How the enemy uses slander as a tactic to stop your calling. Why we get resistance as we try to make a difference. How much of our mess do we really share? Why whatever we focus on we give power to. How our calling is usually something we can do and yet bigger than we think we can do. Our purpose is to love God and be loved. But our calling is to do things for Him which is an expression of our purpose. Resources From Today’s Show Connect with Julie on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or her website. #044 The Power Of Your Words With Kristin Bonin
My guest today is Kristin Bonin. She is a speaker, author and has a passion to minister to women. Kristin is an author, speaker, ordained minister and blogger. If you talk to her you quickly learn of her love for Scripture and how she leans into for practically living a supernatural life. Kristin writes and speaks using her challenges, struggles and lessons the Lord is teaching her along the way. Unafraid to get messy, she considers herself a transparently flawed Bible teacher with a love of theology. Kristin is an on-the-go mom of girls. She and her husband, Chris are stationed just outside of Houston, Texas. Have you ever said something and wished you could take it back? Or saw how they unintentionally hurt someone? Or maybe you find you’re critical of yourself. We know we need to guard our hearts and minds in Christ … and we know we need to be careful of how we use our words. It’s easy to be convicted of harsh words, gossip or slander. But there is one thing that we don’t often talk about – flattery. Do you struggle with any of these things? How can we use our words for good? What does the Scripture say about the power of our words? Join us for a discussion where we laugh at ourselves, reveal our own struggles and find Jesus in the midst of repentance. For such a serious topic, we sure do have fun on this podcast. I pray you are encouraged by our conversation. #037 A Message To The Bystanders Of Someone Else’s #MeToo Story
Are you a bystander of #metoo? I wrote a blog post to those who are watching and hurting because of someone going through the #MeToo experience. You, the bystander, can help them or actually hurt them. Unintentionally, of course. I made it into a podcast. I start by helping you understand what I was going through so you can understand what the woman you know is going through too. Then I share things you can and not do to help her during this process. Next week I’ll share a message about the 25 signs of spiritual abuse so you can detect it sooner. You may want to check out last week’s post about my #MeToo story. #036 What I Learned From My #MeToo #ChurchToo Story
I wrote a blog post My Untold Story of #MeToo #ChurchToo in April 2018 in response to the accusations of abuse by Bill Hybels at Willow Creek. I never intended to share my story – in fact, many of my friends and those at the church I had attended at the time have never heard it. Beyond the story, there are facts of what happened, how I felt during that time, why I made the decision to remain quiet … and then what God taught me during and after it. I shared the blog post because I felt like people needed to know why women stay quiet so they can be more sensitive to them. And what is going on behind the scenes so if you find out about it later, you can understand that it may be because people are trying to figure out what to do. I planned on leaving this story in blog form. But in the last few weeks and months, I’ve heard more stories of more hurting people. Some of these stories aren’t public yet. One of the preditors even complimented me on my blog post all those months ago – as he was abusing the women on his staff. What will it take to see a change? I felt like the Lord wanted me to release this blog post in audio form – through my podcast. I hope it ministers to people in a different way. It feels really vulnerable to share it out loud. But I’m finding my voice in a whole new way. No fancy studio this time. Just me in my room talking into my phone. I’m aware there is power in releasing a testimony from a powerful overcomer mindset in a raw way. Next week I’ll share a message to the bystanders who are trying to process what they just learned about someone they love (episode 37). And the week after (episode 38), I’ll share a blog post in an audio form about the 25 signs of spiritual abuse so you can detect it sooner. Thank you for listening … and if you think it would bless someone, please share it. #033 Overcoming Self-Doubt
In the third part of my overcoming series, I’m going to share about something else that has come from personal experience – overcoming self-doubt. (Listen to overcoming rejection or jealousy.) I remember when I was in my early 20’s my best friend said I was the most insecure person she knew. She was right but I didn’t know why. As I got older and found freedom in Christ, I realized the reason was that I had a rough time with friends in high school and college. Their words and actions came from their own insecurity but were projected onto me. See, I succeeded as a singer and actress at a young age. I had a lot of favor and when it made me lose friends I would make less of myself so they would like me more. Enter self-doubt. I couldn’t make decisions. I doubted every choice I made. I wanted what other people thought was best. If I had to choose between what I wanted and what someone else wanted, I choose their way. I avoided conflict at all costs. Maintaining peace and being liked was more important than my own opinion. It’s normal to want everyone to like you. But I tried harder than I should have and what others thought of me was more important than what I wanted to do or who I wanted to be. I can’t say there was a moment of revelation on this. It’s more like I learned by trial and error how to overcome self-doubt and insecurity. In the beginning, I lost more battles than I won. I still struggle and yet I don’t mind. If I was insensitive to others then I’d have another problem on my hands. The point is to not let self-doubt hold you back. Today I’ll share what I’ve learned about overcoming self-doubt. I hope you find the freedom to be who God created you to be too. LISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE VIA ITUNESLISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE VIA GOOGLE PLAY IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN One of the most powerful questions I had to answer to begin the journey to overcome self-doubt. #032 Ovecoming Jealousy
In the second of my overcoming series, I’m going to share about overcoming jealousy — healing from those consequences from someone else’s jealousy or helping you identify and get free from a jealous spirit. I believe that if we can see it for what it is … we will find unity in the body of Christ. We will support each other’s dreams without worrying if it will diminish our own desires. Today on the podcast we have Manny Torres. You may remember him from American Idol a few years ago. He made it to the top 14! I met through a common friend and I’ve enjoyed hearing him perform live in downtown Chicago. I asked him to be a part of the podcast today to share his story. I know you will be inspired by his faith as he went from a lots of success and a total high to a low point in his life because of a difficult diagnosis. Manny Torres is a Chicago based singer-songwriter that lives for the passion filled experience of his live shows! His music brings the secular and the sacred into conversation with each other, as he writes and covers songs that demonstrate the beauty, pain, and hope that comprise the human experience as a whole. His voice is warm; even as he sings about heartbreak, such as in “Real Lies,” his ineffable joy resides underneath his sorrow. The effect of this is that Manny enables his listeners to bring their own hurting hearts into song with his—he creates space for them to fully feel their pain, release it, and partake in the musical healing offered by his voice. In this way, Manny’s music is an invitation to his listeners to embrace their hopes and fears, their joys and sadnesses and find peace and calm within the messiness of life. #023 Keys To Love Well
You may have noticed at the end of each episode, I end with, love well, you were made for it. So I thought I’d close out this four part series with some of my tips for loving well. Because this is my favorite subject …. LOVE! Learning to love well is one of the greatest personal rewards in life. When you really love well, you are able to give and receive love from God. You can freely give and receive it from others … and love yourself. But sometimes circumstances makes that really, really hard. We feel disappointed by God or by others … or are disappointed in ourselves. But when we get it … like really get the freedom in loving without judgment or restrictions, we can have a life that is so joyful, we can’t help but give it away. Have you ever wanted to really know God loves you in a way that is more than head knowledge? Or get rid of self doubt or even self hatred? Have you had trouble having compassion for those in need or those that irritate you? I’ll give you some encouragement and keys to love well in this week’s episode. I hope you enjoy the podcast below. #022 Keys to Reconcile Well
I love freedom coaching because I get to help people process their own responses to outside stressors and learn to be the person God created them to be. I find this topic … learning to reconcile well, is key to having healthy relationships. We aren’t taught how to do this in school and we often learn bad habits from our family of origin. Unknowingly, we develop patterns of communication that keep us from having the relationships we desire. If you were to look at your relationships, would you say you are pretty good at working through difficult things? Do people feel safe talking to you when they are upset with you? Are you quick to say you’re sorry and ask for forgiveness? Or do you feel like you need some help learning how to work through conflict? Are you thinking of what you want to say next to defend yourself instead of having the focus on what the other person is saying? Do you wish you’d be better at taking things to God before anyone else? One day I heard God speak to my heart, He said, “You have the gift of reconciliation.”When that came to my mind, I’ll be honest, I didn’t understand it. I knew that Jesus died to reconcile us to God, but how did that translate to a gift that I had? It got me thinking … That’s what Jesus did. He resolved a conflict between God and us. Jesus came so we would no longer be separated from God because of sin. He made a way to bring us back into friendly relations with God. In this podcast episode, I share personal stories of frustration, failure and success. I also give very specific tips on how to reconcile any situation well. And how to deal with the aftermath of things not going as you hoped. I’d love to hear what part of the teaching helped you … so be sure to leave a comment on this post or tag me on social media with @jillmonaco. #021 Keys To Transition Well
Transition is a part of all of our lives and it often happens even if we don’t want it to. Many people struggle with it and others don’t. So what makes these two kind of people different? Are you the kind of person that hates change? Have you lost your job without notice? Has divorce caused you to transition against your will? Do you fear moving in a new direction because of the unknown? Transitions can also be good things like having a family, moving to a new city or taking a new job. Do you just feel like you’re in a life transition and can’t define it? In this episode, I share some of the transitions I’ve experienced (good, bad and yes, ugly). Join me as I share stories from Scripture of people who also had transitions in their lives. What can we learn from them in order to transition well? Often times, their transition was a necessary part of God’s plan that ended up saving an entire nation! You may be a carrier of God’s awesome plan too … so let’s dive in and make sure we are mentally, spiritually and physically prepared! I hope you enjoy the podcast below. Communication is a challenge to most of us at one point or another. Have you ever struggled to figure out how to say something and even with your best efforts you just mess it up? Or have you noticed the person who is better with words steamrolls the more quiet person? But what if I told you there are keys to learning how to communicate so well, that you could keep that connection with someone no matter what the other person did or how badly you are at communicating? #016 Wendy Pope: When You Have To Wait
I think this episode with speaker and author, Wendy Pope, has foundational wisdom to living in the peace of God and contentment for where He has you now. Wendy writes devotions for Proverbs 31 Ministries’ “Encouragement for Today” and is a content provider for the free online devotion app First 5 as well as a member of the Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker team. Wendy is the author of Wait and See. She shares biblical wisdom on how to prepare for the future even as you participate in God’s work in the present. Drawing on the story of David, Wendy helps you exchange weariness and discouragement for hope and action. Instead of getting distracted with the object of your wait, you can grow closer to the Person of your faith—transforming your wait-and-see season into one of the sweetest seasons of all. And I just so happened to be able to do the narration for her audio book.
