Scientific process would just make a big mess
I don’t know about you (well, I have a pretty good idea about you). But I know I’m not the byproduct of some scientific process. I prefer to think of me as God described it, “fearfully and wonderfully made.” That sounds so much more creative than scientific process. And it sounds that way because it IS that way. The fact that you and I were made, designed, by the infinitely creative and one, true, living, loving God sounds just plain wonderful. And it’s much cooler to be here on purpose instead of accidentally. Now, I know you’ve heard of a double helix. Right? It’s the best illustration scientists have come up with, so far, to represent Deoxyribonucleic Acid. You probably know it better by its initials, DNA. And DNA is scientific proof (not process) you and I are fearfully and wonderfully made. Not just carbon copies of carbon lifeforms. Yeah, even the term “carbon lifeforms” contradicts itself. Anyway… I’ll share some tidbits of information about information that’s inside you right now. Almost all the 30,000,000,000,000 (that’s trillion, by the way) cells in your body contain duplicate copies of your DNA. Each human cell contains 46 segments. You got 23 segments from your mom and 23 from your dad. No one else on Earth has the same DNA as you. (facts and figures from “In the Beginning” by Dr. Walt Brown) Cool, huh? And the information in the DNA is like a blueprint for how to build you. Only you! How you’ll look, much of how you’ll act, and how every cell in your body will function during your life. But it gets even more interesting. If you took out all the DNA from one of your cells and uncoiled it, then you connected and stretched it out, it would be about 6 feet long. But It would be so thin you couldn’t see it. Not even with the most powerful microscope in existence today. The coded information found in just one cell could fill a library with somewhere around 4,000 books. And if you took all the DNA in your body and stretched it out end-to-end, you could go to the moon and back more than 165,000 times. I call that mighty impressive. And how about this? The information found in your DNA could fill books that could fill the Grand Canyon almost 30 times. But you could take one set of DNA from one cell of every person who ever lived, put them all in a spoon, and they’d weigh less than an aspirin. When you ponder the power of the scientific discoveries we’ve made so far, you should start to get an idea of how fearfully and wonderfully made you truly are. And ain’t it better to know you’re made instead of just an accidental scientific process? No matter what you believe about how life got here, you made a choice to believe it. No one (at least virtually no one) is being forced to believe how we all got here. So, question. Why would you want to believe you’re just the random result of trillions of mutations? Especially when there’s so much information inside you that proves how wrong that is. You’re an information-based life form. And the fact that so much information is coded into your DNA proves there must be a super coder. The good news is…that coder loves you. He made you a human being in His image and likeness. And He allows you to choose whether to love Him back or not. Choose wisely. Remember… You are fearfully and wonderfully made. There is information locked inside your cells. When you choose to discover why you’re here, You’ll find out what the information tells. And you’ll see you’re not just an accident Fumbling through the hours, days, and weeks, and years. All the evidence is pointing out the way. Trust your Maker. He’ll erase your doubts and fears. By the way, kids who are sent off to government, indoctrination camps, also known as public schools, will most likely never learn those facts I shared with you. But a lot of parents, who homeschool their kids, make sure they get this kind of knowledge too. Because they realize how much it helps kids grow up with a happier, healthier perspective. If homeschooling sounds like something you’d like to do for your kids or grandkids, but you don’t know where to get started, consider the Charlotte Mason homeschool method. Enriched in everything is a good reason to sing
Hey kids. Have you noticed, when you go to the grocery store, how you see the word enriched in just about everything? And did you know most of the time, if not all, that’s not a good thing? But there is a time when it’s awesome to see enriched in everything. And that is when we’re talking about, get this, YOU. And me. Or anyone who’s not ashamed to call himself or herself a Christian. For just a second or two think about the grace of God, which was given to you by the one whose name you use to describe yourself as a Christian. There’s a place in 1 Corinthians that shows how grace made sure you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you so that you come short in no gift Hey, who doesn’t like gifts? How much would you be willing to give for those gifts? But wait! There’s more! Because in that same section of 1 Corinthians it says Jesus will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Hang on. I don’t know about you, but that sounds glorious to me. Because I know if there’s one thing I’m not, in this life and in this world, it’s blameless. And I’m gonna go out on a limb and say you probably aren’t blameless either. But Jesus made sure that we will appear that way when we stand before God one day. And He did that by taking our blame and covering us in… The Glory You got the glory in you, The glory of God. When people don’t understand, You just smile and nod… And trust the good things in you, The Spirit, The Word. And you can know that it’s true, This good news you heard. One day, when Jesus comes back, To make things all right, He’ll lift you high up because You walked in His Light. © 2013 TF If you know you’re enriched in everything, let’s stay connected. So naive back then with a clueless grin
Oh brother, I was so naive. Yeah, I used to believe that Americans were all on the same side. Old people never did bad things. Pretty girls were all saving themselves for marriage. Crazy, I know. But I believed those things. And I assumed most anybody would know I was talking about God when I wrote “higher power” in a song. Boy, was I wrong. And like I said, naive. Fast forward a couple of decades and I wasn’t so naive anymore. It was a good AND bad thing. Good because I grew up, matured, and discovered much more actual truth. Bad because my world wasn’t rosy anymore. And it would never be that rosy again. But that’s as it should be. I’m sure you have some sort of similar story you could share. Right? Where your hopes, dreams, and aspirations were crushed by reality? What do you do when that happens? Well, I can tell you what you don’t do. You don’t give up hoping for better things. Because they’re coming. At least for a few. The higher power that will save the world is coming. That’s not a headline from a movie trailer. Because the Higher Power is the Creator of heaven and earth and the rest of the universe. And, at the risk of offending many, I’ll mention His name. Jesus. Going back to when I was so naive, I wrote a song about worry and not worrying. The lyrics are below. And I want you to see if you find yourself in either part, the worry, or not worrying. If you worry, do you understand why? And if you don’t worry, do you understand why not? Either way you choose to position yourself, there’s only one reason you’re even able to ponder the question. Because you were created with your very own brain. Any questions? Here are the lyrics to help you consider… The Power If I sat down, and I took the time To correct the lines and absorb them all, I would sit in place for so long That the hourglass would surely rust and fall. But there is no need for me to worry. I don’t need to see. And I don’t need to feel. I might expect a change here and there, But surely you must see, Or at least you can feel The power is higher and all we have to do is close our eyes. If I stood still, and I counted days And made up ways to collect them all. I would never move ‘Cause there are no ways I can save them all and take the time. But there is no need for me to worry… ‘Cause the power is higher and all we have to do is close our eyes. © 1977-2017 TF If this landed somewhere good with you, let’s stay connected. It’s super easy. Charlotte Mason Homeschool is a kid person tool
Lately I’ve been telling, anyone who would listen, that public schools are horrible. In fact, quoting me, here is what I keep saying: “If you truly love your kids, get them out of the filthy government indoctrination camps.” And I’ve mentioned how homeschooling is the best option. Recently, I came across the Charlotte Mason Homeschool method. And I’m impressed to say the least. The Charlotte Mason Homeschool curriculum includes: Art Instruction Bible Foreign Language Geography Good Habits Handicrafts History Hymn Study Literature Music Study Nature Study Picture Study Poetry Scripture Memory Shakespeare Here’s the snippet of info you’ll find all over the internet when you look up the founder: This style of homeschooling gets its name from Charlotte Mason, a British educator who lived in the late 1800 and early 1900s. The approach uses rich literature and real objects to present ideas to students through a variety of methods based on the way children naturally learn, and is designed to emphasize lifelong good habits along the way. Instead of multiple-choice worksheets, this style asks the student to retell everything he can remember from the reading or lesson. It also seeks to “spread a feast” of a wide variety of subjects throughout the school week in short-yet-focused lessons, such as art, music, nature study, and handicraft, as well as the usual academic subjects. I like what this mom said after learning about the Charlotte Mason homeschool method: She said to educate by faith… is to have an understanding that God has endowed our little persons with curiosity. It is calming to realize how big a part curiosity plays in a child’s learning. It is not the only feature, but it is capable of doing the lion’s share of the teaching. When a baby reaches his tiny hand for the colorful rattle you hold out to him, he does so out of curiosity. His first steps from crawling to walking are taken out of curiosity. Throughout the day my 2-year-old grandson can be heard to ask, “Wus tha?” as he points to one object after another, inside and outside the house, for the pleasure of hearing his mother name the bird at the feeder, the rain on the windowpane, the car in the driveway. His mother is, in a sense, cooperating with curiosity. She is cooperating with the work of the Holy Spirit in the child’s life. I especially like that last line that talks about cooperating with the work of the Holy Spirit in the child’s life. If and when you cooperate with the Holy Spirit, you’re on the winner’s track. And that is exponentially true when it comes to educating kids. Because then you’re storing up treasures in heaven, potentially. And, if nothing else, I’m making sure your kids are taught by someone who actually loves them. Not just by someone getting a paycheck who couldn’t care less about where kids go when this life is over. If you have kids or grandkids in those filthy government indoctrination camps, that some people call public schools, I urge you and encourage you to check out the Charlotte Mason homeschool way. If this landed somewhere good with you, let’s stay connected. It’s super easy. Here’s how: Get Tony’s Daily Devotional delivered to your inbox for free. A million times over in this clever clover
“Everything has already been said a million times over!” “Not exactly the way you can say it,” he calmly replies. “Oh shut up,” I think to myself. I’ve never had that conversation while sitting alone at my desk. Well, not more than a million times over. When I finish one of those conversations, I get my hands back on my Macbook keyboard and start typing. And, actually, these days, if I want to write faster, I just use my voice and dictate to my computer. It does a very good job even though I do have to edit and make sure it isn’t autocorrecting incorrectly. Anyway… Even I sometimes need a nudge in the creative direction. Because sometimes the ol’ left-brain logical writer, you know and luv, comes out and makes an incorrect deduction about the wants, needs, and desires of the audience. This causes him to pause for too long and stifle his “flow.” Then the so-called logic becomes more and more inflexible and cautious. And the flow becomes a trickle and the trickle fades away. Then the reliable right-brain writer reminds me… “Use the trick I showed you to jump-start that flow again.” Of course, I can’t just freely share what that trick is. Because, in the wrong hands, it could be used for evil, villainous purposes. And I don’t want that on my conscience. So that secret stays with me. The point is, it works like a charm every time. And that’s how I’ve been able to be so prolific for all these decades. Just so you know, I give all the glory of it to God. Because without him, I’d just be wretched, poor, naked, and blind. In The House of the Lord Father God, You never leave me You never forsake me. And Your Word… Gives me courage to go where you take me. You are with me through each dire upheaval. With You in me I will fear no evil. As I walk through the shadow of death… I will sing till my very last breath… Green pastures, still waters… Goodness and mercy for your sons and daughters… True love dwells in the House of the LORD. Each person, each nation… Can be renewed through Your sweet restoration… True love dwells in the House of the LORD. Father God, You made a Way for my total redemption. I believe… Jesus died to provide that exemption. He’s my shepherd through thorns and thru clover. He’s my new wine, and my cup runs over. As I walk through the shadow of death… I will sing till my very last breath…Chorus © 2010 TF Get Tony’s Daily Devotional delivered to your inbox for free. Ringtones for phones in particular zones
Ringtones for phones are still a $2.1 billion bidness. According to one website I found that talks about such things. In 2005, ringtones outsold CD’s. Yeah, I know that’s no big deal now because who cares about CD’s anyway? Right? Not so fast Mister Man (or Missy). I just read a few news snippets that talked about how 2021 was actually a comeback year for our old friend the compact disc. Here’s a quote, “According to Axios , the surge in CD sales was also driven by “young people who are finding they like hard copies of music in the digital age”. And that same article said, “Young people are therefore discovering the sheer joy of owning their music rather than leasing it from a platform like Spotify.” What?! Own music instead of lease it? What a concept! All seriousness aside, that kind of information is part of why I still sell CD’s. Of course, I also sell digital downloads. But I never dumped the lowly CD’s just because they fell out of favor with the “glitter” crowd. But I didn’t mean to yammer on about physical media. In fact, I wanna talk about ringtones for phones. I experimented with ringtones way before they became an “industry.” And I created quite a few of my own. Matter of fact, I still use some of them on my phone to identify certain callers. My favorite is from my personal song for Elgielene. Yeah, she has a one-of-a-kind ringtone. And it’s only available on my phone. And it only identifies one person in the whole world. But that takes me to my self-serving reason for bringing all this up. I created a collection of Pro Life ringtones. And I want YOU to have them. But only if you’re TRULY pro life. And there are two ways you can get ’em for Fa-Ree. You can jump on the The TRUTH. (that’s the catchy name for my free, almost daily, emails. God of Christmas rules and deniers are just fools
10 years ago I wrote some Christmas songs. And one of them became one of my favorites. Yeah, I know. How unabashedly arrogant of me. Right? No, it’s OK to favor your own creative work. And it’s OK to have enough ego to admit it. Anyway…I’ve been sharing that song for just about every Christmas since then. This year is no different. May the Prince of Peace and God of Christmas rule in your heart today and always. Merry Christmas! Please enjoy this song as my gift to you. If the video player doesn’t appear for you, click or tap HERE And here are the words… I Believe In The God of Christmas Some believe there’s just today, And then we die and fade away… Such a sad and hopeless life to lead. Others say we never die, We all live on above the sky… Disregard the theft and hate and greed. But I believe in the God of Christmas, And I believe in His Gift to us all, Yes, I believe that He died to save us And that He rose to recover our fall. Yes I believe in the God who loves us, And I believe in the God who lives, Yes I believe in the God of Christmas. He gave His love, and He still freely gives. One day soon we just may find So many millions left behind In a world where truth is torn apart. Then no lights, no Christmas trees, No arts and no humanities Will bring peace to any broken heart. But I believe in the God of Christmas… (choruses) © Tony Funderburk 2011 Stay tuned, Jump On the The TRUTH. Your understanding doesn’t make a good landing
Eight years ago, today, I shared Episode 15 of my Podcast. Wow, 15. I’m now up to 739 episodes. (Side note: I’m way behind on recording episodes because my voice has been, shall we say, less than smooth. But the plan is to get going again shortly.) Anyway…Episode 15 focused on your understanding. And when I say “your,” I mean mine too. In fact, I mean everybody. Your understanding is small. Again…that means mine and everybody else’s, too. But I don’t want that to discourage you from moving forward in life. Unless you’re someone who hates God and hates anyone who loves God. Then, I want you to realize how small you are. And I want the only forward movement in your life to be movement that takes you toward your Creator. But for those who love God, here’s what I shared eight years ago. It still applies. There’s no need to let discouragement rule the day. If you find that happening, you may be leaning on your own understanding. Remember…your understanding is limited to what your senses and intuition can tell you. And those are based on the limitations of this space/time continuum and your personal location. God doesn’t suffer from those limitations. He can see the whole world. In fact, He can see the whole universe. He created it and everything in it. So…learn to lean on His understanding. He’ll direct your paths, and you’ll walk in stronger faith hope and love. In Episode 15 of the podcast (which wasn’t called the The Power of God’s Love Podcast back then) I shared the previous week’s articles about: how to shine as lights in the world seeking your own supplying what is lacking the excellence of the knowledge of Christ the full-court press how we’re in this world but not of it focus focus focus how to be happy where you are right now Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Masterplan, yes. The kind we don’t have to guess.
Yes, God does have a plan. A MasterPlan. But He most definitely does not have a plan for your day. As I’ve said many times…He’s far too brilliant a designer than to create a bunch of humans who can’t do anything apart from Him. So, if you’ve been one of those Christians who says things like, “I’ve just got to remember, God’s in control,” stop that. And if you tend to say, “We gotta remember, it’s all part of God’s plan,” stop that. Stop saying things that make the world hate God. Stop today. Right now…if not sooner. And never say those things again. But not because I tell you to stop. Don’t say those things because they go directly against what Jesus says. And He says at least 3 times in the New Testament, that He is NOT in control of this world. And that should be abundantly clear. Because the evidence He’s not in control of this world is ubiquitous. All the despicable, horrible, terrible events and sins in the world do not originate in the mind of God. Never did. And never will. And to say that everything is “part of God’s plan” is to say they DO originate from Him. So, again, if you have that BAD habit, stop saying that! Or if you know someone else who has that bad habit, make it clear to them it’s a horrible habit. It borders on (or it actually IS) blasphemy. Yes, God has a Masterplan. And yes, He will one day take back control of this world. But, it should be MCT brainpower clear how that day has not arrived. And it should be MCT brainpower clear who IS in control of this world. Sinners who hate God. From satan, all the way down (so to speak) to the lowest of the lowly God haters. Yeah, they ARE in control, somewhat. And they hope to find a way to rule it over everyone else. Forever. But that won’t happen. Because even though the Body of Christ has gotten weaker and weaker, we still win. And that’s only because we chose wisely. We at least had enough sense to do that correctly. So, I hope it’s also abundantly clear where I stand on that whole “God’s in control” nonsense. And I take that stand because of what God says, many times, in His best-selling book. If you believe I’m wrong, I believe you haven’t read it with the mindset to rightly divide the word of Truth. In The Name of Our Lord We will set up our banners And state our petitions… All in the name of our LORD. We will rise up and stand firm And call ourselves Christians… All in the name of our LORD. We will sing and rejoice For our gracious salvation” All in the name of our LORD. And we will go with this good news Into every nation… All in the name of our LORD. In the name of our LORD… In the sweet, saving name of our LORD. Yes, in the name of our LORD… In the wonderful, beautiful… Glorious, marvelous… Holiest name of our LORD! We will learn from His whole Word And rightly divide it… All in the name of our LORD. We will fight against sin Though the world wants to hide it All in the name of our LORD. We will love every neighbor From the kings to the unborn… All in the name of our LORD. And we will rest in the knowledge When we die, we are reborn… All in the name of our LORD. © 2010 Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Legal protections lead in the wrong directions
Everybody’s trying to be nicer than God. Even real estate websites like to show off their “LGBT legal protections.” Which, of course, are bigoted policies. And I oppose any ideology that singles out individuals or groups who hate God and give them their own so-called “legal protections.” Instead, I wholeheartedly support the MJSPBR and their God-given legal protections. What? You’ve never heard of the MJSPBR organization? I’m guessing you have. But you just never heard ’em called that before. Because MJSPBR people don’t identify themselves by their sexual preferences. Gasp! Can such a group actually exist? Yes, Poindexter. And I won’t leave you in the dark. Because this is important…even to you. And, if you haven’t already, I encourage you to seek out the MJSPBR organization. And grab your free lifetime membership while the limited time offer lasts. You won’t find another body of people in the world as long as you live. Because the owner paid up each and every member’s dues. And you can get that same deal. Guaranteed. All you gotta do is ask. What’s that? You’d like to know more about who these MJSPBR people are before you join? OK. No problem. Would you believe they’re just like you. And they’re quite possibly, literally, all around you and your community. Right now. Yeah, they had to discover, for themselves, all the lasting (dare I say everlasting) benefits of membership. And they had to ask to join, too. Every single person, who’s ever joined, identifies with a single individual. An individual who started the organization in hopes of overcoming the world with graceful love. And an individual who was Manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory. I highly recommend you join today. Like I said…limited time offer. When you expire, the offer expires, too. And it will never be available again. Membership has its rewards. But be warned. Most of the world will do its best to make fun of you, mock you, and create policies designed to shut down the MJSPBR body of members. But we have legal protections the whole world will never remove. Trust the Judge, trust the Judge Who will never ever budge From what’s right. He’s the light. He will lead you out of night Into day, He’s the Way. Seek Him out. Join today. Think back and talk some smack
Yesterday I wrote about a nostalgic memory. And I talked about June bugs. If you didn’t catch that post, check it out. But now I want you to think back in your own life. And go as far back in your past as you can. Because I want you to see yourself as small as possible. OK, are you there yet? Way, way back to when everything was left up to “the grownups.” Can you see it? Great. Now”pick up where you left off. And this time, get it right. and pass this on to as many of your friends and family as possible. Because if we can get enough of us to go back, start over, and do it right, we can change the world. Now, as far as I can tell, there’s only one possible flaw in my theory. Keep in mind, I haven’t worked this out on even a singular level. But work with me here. Because I’m not talking about leaving your adult brain here. No. Think back to that time and take your adult brain with you. I know…in fact, I’m willing to bet…most of you have seen enough Marvel movies to understand the validity of my theory. Sure, there will be time travel naysayers. But they’re just cosmic killjoys who wouldn’t know an excited molecule if it was in their own brain. So, you and I are gonna have to carry the weight of this adventure on our own brain power. Because, I don’t know about you, but I’m particularly fed up with virtue signalers and cancel culture creeps. And zapping back to when they didn’t exist sounds mighty inviting. Matter of fact, I think if we just zap…uh-oh. I think I dozed off there for a couple of minutes. And my fingers kept typing. Must’ve been typing out something deep in my subconscious. Oh great. Now, I gotta go back and edit this before I post it. C’mon man. Well, sorry about that everybody. Here’s a few rhyming lines you can read amongst yourselves while I edit. (Oh brother, I gotta get more sleep tonight.) Is there a day you go back to when you think of better times? Or do you think that day is somewhere up ahead? But either way it’s a day when all your cares will melt away, And then your life will be fulfilling dreams instead. Well, let me say, I’m for living with that hope inside your heart. I do believe in looking for a better way. But cares won’t go until you know your Creator loves you so. That’s how the better times you need begin today. ~Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Addition and subtraction make sense with liquefaction
As I reached the end of 5th grade, and was about to leave elementary school to attend junior high, I was told I’d be put into “accelerated classes.” My teacher sent me home with a note to my parents that said I was “gifted” in addition and subtraction, grammar, and learning skills in general. That addition and subtraction part was ironic, though. Because if you go back one year, to my time in the 4th grade, there was a couple of days when “gifted” would not be the right word. Drifted or shifted, maybe. But definitely not gifted. Well, to be a little more clear, the addition and subtraction parts weren’t my downfall. It was long division. For anyone who hasn’t lived enough decades to know, long division is something you do without the use of your smartphone or some other calculator. And I remember my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Dunaway, taking extra time with me. Because she could see there was something I missed. Or overlooked. And she was pretty sure I visually created a mental block. So, she figured maybe I needed to see the problem from a different perspective. And she let another student show me how to work a long division problem. So, I watched the other student go through a long division problem. And after a couple of times, something clicked and I “saw” the answer to my mental block. I had just looked at it with a flawed preconception. But once I let that go, it all made sense. That’s how it is with preconceived notions, ideas, and theories. They’re not necessarily all wrong. But they can slow down or even shut down the facts and the truth. For example, after the theory of evolution was suggested, back in the 1800’s, geologists thought layers of fossils indicated the age of the fossils. In other words, they figured fossils in the lower layers of sedimentary rock must be older than fossils in the upper layers. So, they came up with their fictional version of history they called the “geologic ages.” And their timelines and timeframes got longer and longer. Because even then, plants and animals were complex enough they couldn’t have evolved in just a few hundred or even several thousand years. No, the numbers would have to be closer to 70-400 million years. And because of their preconceived assumptions, they (so-called “scientists” and “geologists”) end up chasing their own tail. (aka circular reasoning…aka tautology) Those geologists from way back then, and even many (if not most) of them nowadays, didn’t and don’t factor in liquefaction. Sounds like something out of Marvel comics movie. Right? But liquefaction is just a hydrodynamic mechanism that sorts stuff during a flood. Hmm…a flood? Now, where have I heard about a flood and fossils before? Oh yeah, in the Bible. The most unscientific book in the history of the world. Unless you consider the mountain of evidence to the contrary. So, addition and subtraction Show the truth of liquefaction When your preconceived refraction Turns to well-designed attraction. Uncomfortable conversation with a quickly fading nation
Yeah, it’s an uncomfortable conversation to have. The one about what’s happening behind closed doors and tall walls. Doors and walls that close behind foolish people going in…and behind damaged people coming out. Some people have spent much of their lives having that uncomfortable conversation. And it’s mostly a one-sided conversation. Because hard hearts lead to closed ears. And closed ears lead to eternal actions. And those eternal actions typically lead to more hard hearts. It’s a vicious cycle that’s been going on, “legally,” here in America for decades. Of course, I’m talking about our own holocaust. Abortion. It’s something that should never have been “legalized.” And it’s something that changes lives forever. In ways most of the guilty parents will never imagine this side of Heaven. And, back in 2010, I wrote a song about the so-called “guards” who stand behind those tall walls. It’s a somber song with a harsh message. So, it’s a musical version of the uncomfortable conversation. If You Stand Behind That Wall There’s a wall here between life and death Where the unborn are denied their first breath. There are guards here making sure that life ends And they don’t care that they’re killing our friends. Well you can’t plead ignorance…You don’t stand blameless When you stand in the middle of it all. As you discard the innocent You shake foundations. If you stand behind that wall, you will fall. There’s a clear line between right and wrong. Listen close, please, to the words of this song. We were all, once, where those babies are now. Mothers kept us…we all made it somehow. Well, the martyred little ones Your choice keeps nameless Never had any single choice at all. Please don’t discard the innocent They’re God’s creation… If you stand behind that wall, you will fall. You will fall from Grace To a hopeless place With eternal, mournful cries. And the sound you’ll hear ringing in your ear Is the sound of your own lies. chorus © 2010 Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Bad is bad when it’s this sad fad
I think Huey Lewis and the News sang it best, back in the 80’s, when they sang “I say cool is a rule, but sometimes, bad is bad.” What? You don’t remember that song? Then, move along. Because you’re probably not old enough to be reading this. So, you surely won’t understand how sometimes bad is bad. And Huey said it was “sometimes” because back then, if something was good, the hip thing to call it was bad. (Kids say the darndest things.) But Huey pointed out that, you know what? Yeah, sometimes bad is still actually bad. Like bad ideas. For example, how about wearing a mask and constricting your breathing even when it’s not “mandated.” Yeah, it WAS a bad. And it still IS a bad idea. And yet, it looks like most people are still doing that. My wife and I saw dozens of people doing that, while we enjoyed a dinner break at a restaurant. Young, healthy people were the main ones wearing them, too. If you’re one of those people, here’s a short note to you… Don’t misunderstand me. If you choose to live in fear of a virus with a survival rate over 99%, that’s your business. And if your fear tells you to wear a cloth mask that doesn’t protect you and, in fact, can make you sick and compromise your respiratory system, that’s your own business. But stop telling everybody, who chooses not to live in fear, to put on a mask. And stop telling those people aren’t living in fear that a mask or a vaccination is “science.” Especially with those sickening, undertone implications that those people don’t know or follow science. Your so-called science is bad. And so is your data. And your attitude. We can’t both be right on this. So, one of us (who is not me) should dig deeper. Because news anchors, celebrities, sports stars, and lots of politicians lie about what’s going on. And scientists and doctors who actually care about your health want you to know the truth. But they’re shut down, daily, by the tolerant beautiful people who don’t want you to hear both sides. So keep on waddlin’ with your pants all fallin’ down. Like a good, little red comrade. And keep believin’ that the vaccination is good. Yeah, but sometimes “good” is bad. Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. There you go again, not putting the if with then.
I’m reminded of a sound bite from a presidential debate between Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter. Carter presented what he thought was a good case against then Governor Reagan’s position on Medicare. And when Carter finished, Reagan started his counterpoint by saying, “There you go again.” And then he pointed out the flaws in Carter’s statements. But what did “there you go again” mean? Well, in that set of circumstances, Reagan wanted the people to understand Carter’s straw man arguments. Reagan told the people he wasn’t against “helping the people.” But he had seen another “piece of legislation” he liked better. Because he believed it would help people more. While I despise Carter’s policies, and I admire Reagan’s communication skills, they were both wrong. Because you don’t “help the people” by taking tons of their money and then trickling some of it back to them. That’s called stealing. And no pleasant-sounding names will change that fact. Medicare, medicaid, and all the other so-called “healthcare” programs and and “welfare” proposals prove another former President wrong. Donald Trump made speeches where he proudly declared, “America will never be a socialist country.” But America has been a socialist country for decades already. And just this week I’ve seen political pundits saying things like, “Elections have consequences.” And, “Be careful what (or who) you wish for.” Because they see America going further down the tubes. But what the vast majority of people don’t understand is that “elections” are doing exactly what is to be expected. Because “elections” have moved so far away from Godly principles they’re doomed before they even start. “Elections” will never solve our problems because the vast majority of people punch their tickets and run through the wide gate to destruction. So, a political system based on “majority rule” is ultimately doomed. And that’s yet another reason why I sang… Be Careful What You Wish For You’ve got a house and your privacy; A brand new car; you’re in the driver’s seat, But you believe there’s a bigger dream you have to follow… And so you work for your daily bread And wish for something that could get you ahead Because losing the race would be such a hard pill to swallow Be careful what you wish for… Look out “˜cause it might come true… You never, ever really know what’s in store So be careful…be careful what you wish for She feeds the kids and sends “˜em off to school She never breaks or even bends a rule But in her mind she’s convinced that something is missing And so she spends what her husband makes And doesn’t think about the toll it takes Her mother tried to tell her once, but she wouldn’t listen Chorus Now that old world can get its hands on you But only if you stop and let it You have the right to change your mind But somebody might just regret it…don’t forget it Chorus to end © 1989 Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Ancient age appears when clocks miscount the years
What if you reached your prime, let’s say around 33, and someone told you that you look old? It wouldn’t exactly make you feel great. Even if you’re totally confident in who you are, and in your appearance, you don’t wanna look old before your time. And I bet mother Earth doesn’t like all this talk about her ancient age either. I mean, c’mon man…show a little sensitivity. Because mother Earth’s so-called “ancient age” is based on bad timing. And all it takes to make Earth seem really old is to just pile on more years. And that’s easy. Just use bad clocks. And measure wrong. I used to be a full-time finish carpenter. And I’m sure you’ve heard the old saying, “Measure twice, cut once.” But, hidden in that saying, is the implication that you’ll use an accurate tape measure. Or some other form of measurement. Because if the device ain’t accurate, the measurement won’t be either. Once, twice, or more. So, if scientists are gonna theorize the age of the Earth, they should use accurate measurements. And not the slow clocking data they’ve used for too long (pun slightly intended). For examples…coral reefs and stalactites and stalagmites. People, who call themselves unbiased scientists, say coral reefs and stalactites and stalagmites take hundreds of thousands of years to form. So, Earth must be old. But, as it turns out, other scientists have discovered that, under favorable growth conditions, they can form in 3400 years or less. But you won’t hear many of those unbiased scientists sharing that new information. Because it all points to a young planet. Don’t they care how happy mother Earth would be to hear the news? No. Not so much. Because a young Earth couldn’t have just exploded into existence. And life couldn’t have evolved in such a short time. They know that. And they also know that young Earth data points to what they consider to be the silly notion of creation. And, of course, creation implies a Creator. Uh-oh! Now we’ve gone off the deep end. “Next thing you’ll be tellin’ us is that God created everything literally in 7 days.” Actually, no. He created everything in a literal 6 days. But you were close. And much closer than your miscounted millions of years. In awe of all creation and how it all could be The fairy tale illusions increase with every year. The wrinkled plans expand”exponentially” Until one day, perhaps, a duck becomes a deer”yeah, right. The end of humanity and the definition of insanity
God? Or environmentalists? Where is your trust? Let’s say God told you something like, “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.”Would you believe Him? Or do you put your faith in those who’ve been incorrectly predicting “the end” of humanity for decades? Um…I’ll take “the end of humanity” for $200, Alex. *buzzer sound* Ooh, sorry. Wrong answer. Because God actually DID say everyday life will continue, normally, for as long as the earth remains. And the earth will remain until God gets rid of it. And He WILL get rid of it one day. Now, of course, I know, when a heathen…aka, an unbeliever…comes across an article like this, he or she will scoff. Because it’s not the hip, trendy thing to believe in God. Especially when you can become like a god practically overnight on YouTube or Instagram. (psst…you can lose that status overnight, too) But it’s not a good idea (translate: it’s stupid) to disagree with God. Everyone, who ever did, lost that debate. And everyone who ever does, will, too. But who cares? Right? Why does it matter whether I’m right for saying the earth is gonna be OK, or you’re right for saying the sky is falling as we speak? Because. Ideas have consequences. Wrong ideas lead to bad science. And bad science leads to bad ideologies. And surely you can see the vicious circle forming here. Sort of like the definition of insanity. But good ideas lead to good science. And good science can find cures for cancer. Or the discovery of information encoded into your DNA. Those kinds of discoveries point to a Designer. Because the incredibly complex design found in one human cell could not have happened accidentally. Sure, accidents happen. But you’re not one of them. So, I hope you’ll learn to see How your own humanity Shows you’re loved beyond what you can comprehend. Murder mayhem and madness beat up on tidings of gladness
Ah, yes. Diversity, equity, and unabashed tolerance. That’s what you get when you mix a whole lotta different kinds of people together in one place. Right? And you just better brace yourself for gobs of group hugs, too. Because peace, love, and joy overflow where masses of people go. (cue the record scratch and bubble pop sound effects) Uh, get real. Because this is about murder, mayhem, and madness. And I’m not talkin’ Alfred Hitchcock or Stephen King murder, mayhem, and madness. I’m talkin’ real stuff. With real people (and I use that term loosely) doing real bad stuff to other people. Yeah, that kind of murder, mayhem, and madness. I read an article, from last week, that talked about it. An adjunct professor from John Jay College of Criminal Justice (I’m sure they know less than they think they do) said homicides and shootings are already ahead of last year’s pace. And the professor also said the problems seem to be mostly in cities. What?! Can that be? With all the politicians, Hollywood celebrities, and sports “stars” sharing messages about putting differences aside, how can that be? I’m baffled. Except… I’m not. Even though the professor, who’s also a former sergeant for the NYPD, said summer months bring out more crime because there are more people out there. Oh, I see. If you let people go outside, the heat will cause them to do some bad things. He even said that since the pandemic is ending people will want to get out and do stuff. And he thinks that’s “just a cocktail for disaster to some.” Wow, I remember some mighty hot summers in the South and Midwest where I grew up. But people didn’t tend to blame crime on the weather back then. I guess they just didn’t know better, yet. But I got news for you. Weather ain’t the problem. When you read stats on a website that say 369 people were shot in the past 72 hours, your first thought shouldn’t be to check out the week’s forecast on your weather app. And when you read about how New York City’s murder rate increased by 350% compared to the same time frame last year, it’s not time to buy more sunscreen. And when you discover there’s a website that archives what they call “gun violence,” don’t schedule an appointment with your air conditioner technician. Weather ain’t the problem. No, you can cite stats and quotes and hypotheses till the cows come home. And you still won’t be a nanometer closer to the cause of all the murder, mayhem, and madness. Most (if not all) adjunct professors (and professors of most colors, creeds, and characters) are clueless when it comes to Why. So, the best (if you can call it that) they can postulate are solutions like more jail time and more analysis…both psycho and data. Or worse, they play the blame game. But they blame intangibles like lawlessness. Or social disadvantages. And even “increased perception of police illegitimacy.” But if you’re gonna blame anything, blame sin. Or more to the point…sinners. People who don’t care that we humans are created in the image and likeness of God. People who couldn’t care less that every single one of us comes from the same race. And the same two original humans. Yeah, when you raise kids to believe they just evolved from animals, you get kids who act like animals. Duh! And animals kill and eat other animals. But they do it merely to survive. Not because they derive some sick pleasure from seeing the other animal die. That’s evil reserved only for the human “animals.” I know I’m on a rant. But, as you know (if you’ve followed me for a while), I’m an optimist. And I don’t like to leave you with negative thoughts. So, I’ll just leave you with a suggestion your Creator inspired the Apostle Paul to write. “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” And… “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. What can cause stress and make life a mess?
Apparently a lot of people go online to find out what can cause stress. And that makes sense. Because a lot of people (if not most) are stressed out. But I seriously don’t think you need to ask Google or some social media crowd what can cause it. Well, not if you’ve got at least a little wisdom. Because wisdom will show you life without God is what can cause stress. And, yeah, that even goes for you Mister or Miss I-Don’t-Believe-in-God. Matter of fact, you’re gonna feel the stress way more than someone who trusts in the One who made us. Don’t believe me? Well, skip your skunk for a while. And wait till the fog clears in your head. Then, look into it. Really check it out. And you’ll either go where the evidence takes you, or keep singin’… What Can I Do? I want to dream, but I can’t even get to sleep. And I want to run, but I’ve got promises to keep. I don’t mind the struggle, but I’m tired of the fight I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night But what can I do? I’m only one man. I’d love to see peace in this life. But I don’t have a plan Tell me what can I do? I’m only one guy. I’d love to see love conquer all and hatred run dry. But what can I do? Tell me what can I possibly do? I want to laugh, but I can’t even seem to smile. And I want to win, but I don’t even make the trial. I don’t mind the darkness, but I do prefer the light. I don’t want to stand still while the day turns into night. Chorus inst…repeat chorus to end © 1988 Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Express your beliefs like the super-rich chiefs
If you were a “climate change” advocate, or some sort of “global warming” proponent, what would be the best way to express your beliefs? Show of hands? OK, Susie. What do you think the answer is? “Um, buy a half a billion dollar yacht?” That’s right, Susie. Of course, that’s only for the super-smart, super-rich people. But you’ve got the right idea. Express your beliefs by doing the opposite. For example, if you believe vehicles that use gasoline and petroleum also cause our planet to overheat, you should buy the largest vehicles you can find. And if you can’t find one large enough, have one custom made. After all, why deny yourself the pleasure of spending all that hard-earned dough. And if you believe we’re using up all our planet’s resources too quickly, then you should definitely buy the largest house…no, I should say, mansion…you can find. And if you can’t find one large enough, have one custom made. After all, why deny yourself the pleasure of spending all that hard-earned dough. Of course, I’m just being sarcastic. Because, like I said, the super-rich are super-smart. They’d never do such things. Because they super-care. They’d never spend their money in a way that harms mother earth. Well, that’s true, unless you count just about every super-rich person out there. For example, Jeff Bezos, chief excruciating officer of Amazon, will apparently soon be taking delivery of one of those half a billion dollar yachts little Susie mentioned. And according to an article I read about it, his yacht will be large enough to have a smaller “rescue yacht” on board. I believe it’ll take more than a little fuel to operate that beast. But I could be wrong. Maybe it’s totally electric. And totally emissions free. And maybe there really are magical fairies, leprechauns, and unicorns. Yeah, Mr. Bezos is just one example of the many super-rich hypocrites. And Jesus, who created Heaven and Earth and all living things, had harsh words for hypocrites. When you look up the word “hypocrites” in the New Testament, you’ll see what I mean. Just so you know where I stand on the topic of wealth… I’m for it. But far too many pursue wealth for its own sake. As they pretend to want to help their fellow man. And yet, how much does it help your fellow man to hear you talking about dwindling resources and the impending doom of climate change, when you buy gigantic houses and yachts? “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.” Disagree? Feel free to express your beliefs in the comments. Hindsight is 20 20 for some but not for plenty
I had my eyes examined (no, not my head) a couple of weeks ago. And this week I got my new glasses. Plus, this is my 2020th post here on TonyFunderburk.com. So, those two things, and a couple of other unnamed things, got me thinking about that expression, “hindsight is 20 20.” From what I’ve been able to figure out, with only a little research…because I don’t wanna spend a lot of time on it…is that the expression probably started somewhere around the mid 1900’s. Hindsight is 20 20 is a metaphor that doesn’t work as much anymore. Because it implies that you can look back in time and see, more clearly, what you woulda coulda shoulda done. And it’s another way of saying “those who don’t learn from the past are destined to repeat it.” The expression is based on something known as the Snellen chart. And if you’ve ever had an eye examination, you’ve seen the chart. Those rows of letters that get smaller and smaller. And the doctor asks you to cover one eye and read the smallest line you can see. (side note: For some reason they have fewer lines than when I was younger, but anyway…) So, when you can see the chart clearly, with both eyes, from a distance of 20 feet, your vision is 20/20. But here’s a little plot twist. Just because your vision might be categorized as 20/20 doesn’t mean it’s perfect vision. It just means you have clear, sharp vision when you look straight ahead. And your ophthalmologist (there’s a word you need glasses for) will still wanna test your peripheral and depth perception. But it’s the looking ahead, compared to looking back, that I think is interesting. Because you can get a prescription to see what’s in front of you more clearly. And that can help you avoid running into a door. Or help you drive safely. But there’s no prescription for looking back in time. And even if there were a prescription, it wouldn’t help. Because you still couldn’t do anything about what happened five minutes ago. Let alone 20 years ago. But you CAN learn from your past mistakes. And you CAN do better as you move forward. But it’s gonna require a prescription most people don’t want. Get wisdom. Yeah, wisdom. Not book smarts. Not street smarts. Pure, unadulterated wisdom. And most people don’t wanna do that because they don’t wanna go where it is. They’d rather hide their heads in books. Or turn their ears to the streets. But the world doesn’t contain wisdom. The world is full of “unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness.” And that list manipulates people into being “whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful.” Have you noticed anybody that fits any of those descriptions? If not, then I think it’s time for your eye exam. And I’d like to recommend the best way to look back so you can see clearly as you move forward. And, of course, my recommendation is to read the bestselling book of all time. The Bible. Or you can keep running into walls, Sliding down slopes, Falling off cliffs, And reaching for ropes, Never looking up For your dreams and hopes. Running into walls, And sliding down slopes. Cling to what is good. Yes, we certainly should.
You and I should cling to what is good. Not because it’s some kind of law. But because there’s much benefit to it. Sometimes eternal benefits. But you can’t do it. And I can’t either. We just can’t do it. Because it doesn’t jive with our human nature to cling to what is good. And that sounds bad. Right? (tongue only slightly in cheek) And it sounds bad because it IS bad. But human nature looks for ways to be king (or queen) of the world. You and I don’t go out of our way to be “kindly affectionate to one another.” And we sure don’t wanna “give preference to one another.” Especially nowadays. Because all that gushy love your neighbor kind of stuff is seen as a sign of weakness by many, if not most, people these days. And weak definitely ain’t cool. So, skip that goody two shoes stuff. But that brings up a good question. Since we can’t do all that patient love and affection stuff, why does God ask or tell us to do it? Yeah. And in fact, he gets downright insistent about it through His apostle, Paul, in his letter to the Romans. “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.” Sure, sounds straightforward enough. But I can’t do it. And neither can you. Not on our own anyway. You’re gonna need help to show brotherly love to people in this world. And you’re gonna need help being fervent in spirit and patient in tribulation. Because your flesh…your self…wants to BE served. And without the “continuing steadfastly in prayer” part, that’s the way it will BE. So, cling to what is good. And here’s the best way to do that. Cling to God. Because only He is good. All the time. And in every way. Only God will never let you down. And only His love will get you through your life. That’s how you do the impossible. Let God do it through you. Remember…you get to choose. You can’t begin the day, it’s impossible. You don’t know what to say, it’s impossible. And so you seem to pray to impossible gods. But let God take a turn, it’s possible To make the image burn, it’s possible You still could overturn Impossible Odds. Time shall be no more. What do they say that for?
I just saw three weak references to time by Christians. And all three of them talked about when time shall be no more. Sadly, those Christians are perpetuating an impossibility. Because there will never be a time when there is no time. See, how it even sounds silly when you put it that way? To say time shall be no more is the same as saying God shall be no more. But this notion of timelessness doesn’t come from the Bible. In fact, all through the Bible, when you find references to time, they show the vastness of it. And that’s what makes the Christian God of the Bible even more amazing. From everlasting to everlasting. That’s a key description of your Creator. And it clearly describes an eternal past through now and on into the eternal future. But don’t take my word for it. If you truly believe time shall be no more (at any time in your future), then I wonder why God inspired John to talk about the passing of time in Heaven. Here’s the passage I mean… “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.” So, according to God, we’ll even still have months in Heaven. And it seems as though there’ll still be twelve of them. Now, I think that’s awesome. And it sure doesn’t sound like no more time. Time will go on forever Because God is eternal and true. Time will go on forever For God, and for me, and for you. Right or Wrong – the idealogical song
Something is either right or wrong. And, it goes without saying (but I’m saying it anyway) some of those right or wrong things are more important than others. And some are of great importance. But the foundation of the statement remains the same. Because right or wrong can mean the difference between joy and torment. For example, I’ll share a snippet of conversation I had with someone who disagreed with me on this idea. And I’ll put in their comments first, followed by my reply. “Being right has nothing to do with it. The idea that you call ‘right’ is the idea that someone else calls ‘wrong.’ The solution that you call ‘perfect’ is the solution that another calls ‘unworkable.’ The position that you feel is unassailable is the very position that others assail. What will solve all of this? Not attack, that’s for sure. And not defense, either. So what is left? Simple human love. The kind of love that says, “It doesn’t matter who is right or wrong. It only matters that you are not hurt. And that we both can benefit. All true benefits are mutual.” Ok, before I add my reply to those comments, yes, love is the answer. But not simple human love. Now, here is my reply to the previous statements… “Being right has nothing to do with it” Is that right? “The idea that you call ‘right’ is the idea that someone else calls ‘wrong’ ” Is that right or wrong? “The solution that you call perfect is the solution that another calls unworkable” Is that absolutely true? Can you actually know anything? Or can you only attempt to correct others for not knowing what you think you know? Does absolute truth exist? Because a statement that says “all true benefits are mutual” is a statement of absolute truth by its inclusion of the word “all”. That leaves no wiggle room, ringing of absoluteness. True love tells the truth. True love rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes, hopes, and endures all things…even those things which we might not prefer to believe are true. I don’t attack you. I respond to your challenges in kind. And I say these things with no malice toward you…no expectation of spontaneous illumination. I say them out of a love…a love you will never understand if you choose to live out your life elevating yourself above your Creator. And it is choice, not predetermination. OK. There are two opposing views of the right or wrong debate. And I’d like to add that Love isn’t merely a feeling. It’s an act of your will. It doesn’t simply fall out of the universe and land in your heart. You choose to either love or not love. And it’s either freely given, or it’s not love. What do you think? Am I right or wrong? Feet of clay walk you away from life today
Even if you’re not a Christian believer, you should read about Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Because it’s the kind of story Hollywood movies attempt to tell. But they almost always fail miserably for the same reason King Nebuchadnezzar failed. They stand on feet of clay. Here’s a sneak preview of the story about ol’ King Nebby’s dream… “And the king said to them, “I have had a dream, and my spirit is anxious to know the dream.” Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic, “O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.” The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, “My decision is firm: if you do not make known the dream to me, and its interpretation, you shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made an ash heap. However, if you tell the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts, rewards, and great honor. Therefore tell me the dream and its interpretation.” Whoa! Talk about pressure. Imagine being asked to interpret a dream. But then being told that you have to tell the dreamer what his dream was and THEN interpret it. Impossible right? Well, yeah. Impossible for mere mortal men (or even women). But not for God. So, there was this one guy, (maybe you’ve heard of him) Daniel. And he was a great example of how to trust God for the answers to most of life’s difficult problems. And he was a doer, not just a hearer or reader. So, Daniel never stood on… Feet of Clay He stood there on the sandy ground, With feet of clay, and looked around And heard an almost silent sound. His feet of clay became unbound. He felt the world begin to spin. It opened up and called him in. He heard a voice and saw a grin Upon a face outlined by sin. The voice said, “You are mine, today. And here is where you’ll always stay. Your selfishness brought you this way. You ran here on your feet of clay. © 2020 Tony Funderburk (lyrics to a potential song) Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Knight in shining armor and the bully disarmer
246 years ago, this month, some guys with a British accent figured they’d bully some Americans around. But things didn’t go quite according to their plan. Because a knight in shining armor foiled their plans. And, of course, I’m being a bit facetious, because there weren’t any actual Americans at that time. Because there wasn’t an actual America at that time. But those British bullies (little did they know) were about to launch (or at least help) a whole new country. Oh yeah…there was no such thing as a knight in shining armor back then either. But there WAS this guy who worked with shiny metal. And he DID help foil the British plans. Maybe you’ve heard this famous quote, “One if by land and two if by sea.” That was part of the poem, “Paul Revere’s Ride,” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. And it was part of a secret message the local patriots used to alert each other which way the British would be coming as they attempted to sneak up on Concord, Massachusetts. And Paul Revere, who was a master silversmith (and apparently made false teeth and surgical tools, too) and pretty good on a horse, was part of the local militia. But why did the local residents form a militia. And why were the British trying to sneak up on the colonists, aka patriots, and take all their guns and ammunition? Because they wanted to squelch the uprisings that had started due to higher taxes and more interference with local affairs. Yeah, those tyrannical Brits raised taxes on the colonies to somewhere around 3%. Are you kidding me? Nobody should have to pay that much. And thank goodness we know better now. Right? But…notice how the British decided to start by seizing guns and ammo. Why? Because disarmed people can’t fight back against tyrants with guns. Thank goodness we don’t have to deal with that sort of thing anymore. Right? Well, unless you count the many ways government is trying to disarm America. And the people (and I use that term loosely) who are working on that do it in the name of “public health.” Yeah, guns’ll make you sick. Bet you didn’t know that. And it’s because guns naturally lead to “gun violence.” Of course, one case of “gun violence” compels all gun owners to follow suit. And what will we ever be able to do when everybody’s shootin’ at everybody else. Oh, the humanity. No, it’s insanity. Because there’s No. Such. Thing. as gun violence. I promise you that you’ll never find a violent gun even if you commit every waking hour of your life to search for it. And I know, for a fact, that the guns I’ve had for decades have never even gotten the slightest bit upset. Much less, violent. But the people (again, a term I use loosely) who want to control you don’t care about Truth. They only care about control. Power. And I mean absolute power. Because they hate God. And they hate anyone who loves God. And they have determined themselves to be the source of absolute power. In spite of that…and because of that…it’s crucial to realize your right to protect yourself comes from God. Not from some stupid 2nd amendment. Human rights to life and liberty were real and true long before the American Constitution existed. In fact, those rights were instilled in men and women, by God, when He created Adam and Eve. Because life, eternally, comes from God. And if a scumbag, or even a government, means to do harm to you or your family, you have every right to defend yourself and them. Doesn’t matter if they come by land, by sea, by air, or by “public health crisis.” So, stand strong. Like Paul Revere and the other patriots. First, arm yourself with God’s Truth. Then go get some more ammo. And defend yourself when it’s necessary Even if it sounds a little strange and scary. Because all it takes for the bad guys to win Is for good guys to give up and then give in. Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Spreading the ashes with dampened eyelashes
The short speeches were over. The room was put back in order. And the leftovers, sound system, and other ceremonial items were carried out, packed into cars, and driven away. So, all that was left of this celebration of my Mom’s life was the spreading the ashes part. My younger brother suggested “the old farm” where our family had lived decades before. And the rest of us agreed that it made more sense than trying to get everyone together by the ocean, as Mom had talked about a couple of times. She loved the warmth of the sandy beaches in Florida, even though she never lived there. But it would have been a strategic challenge, to say the least, for all of us to make it to Florida. So, we all decided to meet at “the old farm” after Mom’s memorial. Spreading the ashes was a weird experience for me. Partly because I’m the quintessential skeptic. So, I always wonder if the ashes of a loved one are truly the ashes of a loved one. And are they the sum total? Or just a token? But I managed my skepticism. And we proceeded with the emotional ceremony. Fortunately, the main attendees, for the ceremony, are/were Christians. So, we know/knew that Mom wasn’t actually there. Because we know/knew Mom believed in Jesus as her savior, and she went to live in Heaven the second her last breath left her body. But, for many (far too many) people, those ashes are holy…or sacred. And the ritual of spreading them is an opportunity to reconnect with “the universe.” I found a “prayer,” for the ashes ceremony, that’s an illustration of this. And the person who came up with the “prayer” told readers to feel free to revise it “as you see fit” and use it as you like. The “prayer” starts out with “You were called to return to the Essential, to the Infinity, far too soon.” Then, the “prayer” continues by talking about the location: “And today, at this appointed time, I declare this place sacred. I now take [holy waters] from this [lake] to purify my mind so it may be clear and quiet; a vessel for wisdom. Wise in knowing it will not ever know.” To give credit where credit is due, at least the writer recognizes we are body, soul, and mind (aka spirit). But “wise in knowing it will never know” is silly. Because it cancels itself out. C’mon man. And then the “prayer” continues with “Oh Infinite and Unknowable of Which We Are, I now command to you ashes from our beloved [name] whose life-force you so swiftly reclaimed to rejoin.” (Note: I’m sure the writer meant “commend” and not “command.”) Yeah, that’s disjointed, discombobulated, and dysfunctional humanism disguised as “spiritual.” You and I are not the “Infinite and Unknowable.” As a matter of fact, not even the one true, living, loving God of all creation is infinite AND unknowable. Because, over the course of thousands of years He wrote a book to make Himself unmistakably knowable to us. And while He’s infinite from eternity past through eternity future, you and I had a beginning. So, we’re not infinite. AND, we’re not unknowable. Because God knew us even before we were born. So, to get back to spreading the ashes of my Mom…it was a ceremony of remembrance. And it was emotional. And it was one last time to feel an earthly connection to her. But we didn’t declare the location to be sacred ground. And we didn’t need to purify ourselves with any “holy waters.” We simply said our last goodbye. And I thank God for the rest He gives To me and everybody who lives In the knowledge of the sacrifice That provides the Way to be born twice. Peace of mind to those left behind
I was a big fan of the popular duo from the seventies, Loggins and Messina. And when my brother and I started actually getting paid to play music, Loggins and Messina songs were a significant part of our repertoire. They released a double album of their live performances. And that collection was called “On Stage” (go figure). And one section of the 4th side was called “Trilogy.” Because it contained 3 songs the band tied together with some cool instrumentation. The third song of the trilogy was “Peace of Mind.” And here’s what made me think of “Peace of Mind” this morning. As of the time of this writing, Elgielene and I are in Kansas to visit siblings, nieces and nephews, and other extended family members. And we’re all gathering together, tomorrow, to remember my Mom who went to live in Heaven back in February. I’ve been thinking how much of a blessing it is to have the peace of mind of knowing where Mom is and knowing I’ll see her again one day. Yes, it’s a blessing. In spite of how old-fashioned that might sound to so many younger people who’ve grown up in Godless households and schools. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people talk about the death of a loved one and say “well, she (or he) is in a better place, now.” But the hint of doubt flashed across their face. And I could tell they weren’t sure about it. Sadly, for too many…probably most…they’re not in a better place. In fact, they’re in the worst possible place. And it’ll be for the maximum amount of time, which is time without end. But I know my Mom isn’t one of them. And I know she’s enjoyed her new home in Heaven for over a couple of months now. And that knowledge provides a peace of mind that surpasses all earthly understanding. Brought to me (and you?) by the Prince of Peace. And He is… The One True Way To Peace Judge me; I need to be judged. Correct me; whenever I’m wrong. Save me from thinking my thoughts. I’ve lived in them way too long. Show me what I need to see. Tell me what I have to hear. Give me a voice of wisdom. Thank You for taking my fear. And I have to trust that my God is just. And I feel my boldness increase. I’m a dissident, and I’m an instrument For the one true Way to peace. Search me for the deeper things. Fill me from Your living well. Free me from the ways of man. Take me off the path to Hell. Listen to my fervent prayer. Bless me so that I can bless. Change me with Your mighty Word. Spare me with Your tenderness. Chorus Make me to always understand I’m only mighty in Your mighty Hand. inst…Chorus to end © 2000 Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Podcasting host doesn’t wanna be a ghost
Hey, you might not know it. But I’m a podcasting host. And the podcast is zooming up on 700 episodes. But, to most of the listening (and non-listening) world, I’m still a ghost. Yeah, I know it’s hard to believe that your ol’ palsy walsy, Tony might not be a household name all around the world. But it’s true. So, this long-suffering podcasting host has a favor to ask. Because I just got an email from Spotify, one of my The Power of God’s Love Podcast syndicators. And if you listen to podcasts (or other content) on Spotify, you can help me out. If you don’t listen to my podcast on Spotify, you can skip this email. And if you don’t listen to Rhyme And Reason at all…what in the world is wrong with you?! Here’s the info they sent me, and I’ll follow it up with how you can help… “We’re excited to unveil some big improvements to Spotify’s podcast charts experience, which will benefit podcasters in a number of ways. Starting today, charts will have their own website, where listeners can directly search, discover, follow, and share. We’re also introducing the Top Episodes chart, which looks beyond a show’s overall listeners and instead focuses on consumption at the episode level. Finally, we’ve optimized the methodology for our existing Top Podcasts chart to more quickly react to what’s trending and number of followers. We also want you to be able to celebrate your success””which is why we’re excited to unveil a revamped podcast-charts experience that’s better in every way: more chances for up-and-coming creators and established creators to make it onto a chart…” OK, what it all boils down to is this. If you listen to the The Power of God’s Love Podcast on Spotify, share the link with all your friends, family, acquaintances, anyone who owes you a political favor, you name it. Help me get the word out. And I’ll make it worth your while. If somebody subscribes to my channel on Spotify because you shared the link, I’ll send you a link to some free music. Truth is eternal. Put that in your journal.
Almost 20 years ago (and it seems like last week) I wrote about the sad state of truth in this world. And what’s even sadder is…my song is even more apropos now. Real Truth is eternal. But in the here and now it obscured with blithering, withering ideologies. And it’s attacked from every angle. Ironically in the name of tolerance and acceptance. But regardless of feelings and ideologies, Truth is eternal. And even though it’ll take a lot of hits from people who hate the truth, it won’t deflate, give in, hide, or lose. Because Truth isn’t man-made. And I believe there’s so much to be optimistic about, even though I sang… Nothin’s Sacred Anymore Take the truth and lock it up, and throw away the key. Winds of change are blowing foul; a dance with destiny. Blur the face of love and sex and say it’s all OK. Tell the child it’s just a choice and melt her soul away. Nothin’s sacred anymore” Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core? Nothin’s sacred anymore” And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door? Nothin’s sacred anymore Cast your vote for social growth and then say yes to law. Keep the peace, divide the wealth; the vision Adolph saw. Hedge the bets and ride the fence; the middle road’s secure Then one day you’re head to head with all you must endure Nothin’s sacred anymore” Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core? Nothin’s sacred anymore” And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door? Nothin’s sacred anymore More space and time”more would be sublime. Stand for something right and never lose sight
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” If you’re a principled person, or if you’re someone who knows the difference between good and evil, you’ve probably heard that quote by Edmund Burke. Or did Eddie actually come up with that one? Hmm, there appears to be some good evidence he didn’t. And, it’s a great way to say you gotta stand for something good and right. But… According to an article I read on some famous good and evil quotes that saying might have actually been by John Stuart Mill. He was an English philosopher. And some time during the 1860’s he wrote “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.” Leave it to the English to put in more words than necessary. Yeah, I like the first version (that Edmund Burke wrote or didn’t write) better. Because it rolls off the tongue more easily. And it gets the point across in fewer words. If good men don’t stand for something right, they can lose everything. And this is 2000% more true for good women. Not really. I just made up that number. Because there are women who read and listen to what I write and read. And I know it’s important to be inclusive. So, I figured 2000% is a who lot of inclusive’. Right? Anyway… Evil is expanding at an exponential rate right now. And I think it’s happening here in the “land of the free” and the “home of the brave” more than just about anywhere. And that’s just because I believe we had the most to lose and the furthest to fall. Or is that farthest? Point is…it’s a long way down. But a better place for good men (and women) to “compass their ends” doesn’t reside in government. No, bureaucracy is like your small intestines when not enough hydrochloric acid is present in your body. It’s a breeding ground for parasites. So, it’s important to stand for what’s actually right. Not merely what you “feel” is right. Stand for something like Truth, for instance. And dare I say it (rhetorical question)…absolute Truth? Yeah. Stand for that. Like in these lyrics by my favorite songwriter… Take A Stand If you take a stand and you stand for the Way, You might never be rich. But no gold here beats the treasure in Heaven, And you’ll know which is which. Angels are gonna rejoice, And we’re gonna get to see how The Lord will judge the ones who wait. So better take a stand right now. If you take a stand and you stand for the Truth, You could lose a good friend. But if you lose the whole wide world And keep your soul, you win in the end. All eyes are gonna look up. All knees are gonna bow, And when that time comes it’s too late. You gotta take a stand right now. If you take a stand and you stand for Life, People might laugh and make fun. And Jesus didn’t say it was gonna be easy, But you’ll be with Him when this life is done. No more livin’ like this; By the sweat of your brow, And if you want God’s paradise, You better take a stand right now. © 2008 Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Influencers and teens and psychedelic scenes
John Lennon, that slightly famous Beatles guy, once said the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. And I actually think he might’ve been taken a little out of context by reporters and fans at the time. Because I’ve checked into what he said, and it appeared to not be a statement made out of arrogance. But the way it was blown out of proportion highlights the connection between influencers and teens. And I think Mr. Lennon progressed (or rather digressed), in his worldview, to the point of most likely believing his own press. And the Beatles’ press. In other words, it appeared he could Imagine a world that didn’t need, and probably shouldn’t have, the influence of the Creator. And that’s when the connection between influencers and teens ruins lives. I can’t judge John Lennon’s heart. So, I don’t 100% know where he’s spending eternity. But judging by his words and actions, my guess would be it’s not Heaven. And one of the things that made me think of him, and write this, is an April Fool’s joke he and Yoko Ono played back in 1970. They issued a statement to the press announcing they’d be getting dual sex change operations. And those kinds of operations are in the news a lot these days. I’m not saying John and Yoko’s statement had a direct correlation to what’s going on. But there IS a downstream effect. And that’s a bit ironic since John got himself a copy of Timothy Leary’s book, “The Psychedelic Experience” and also a copy of “The Tibetan Book Of The Dead.” So, good logic and reason don’t tend to happen when a person “turns on” with drugs and reads, “When in doubt, relax, turn off your mind, float downstream.” Good things don’t tend to happen for teens who follow those examples either. Yeah, I’m just being old-fashioned and narrow-minded. But I certainly won’t sit at my keyboard trying to Imagine away the source of Life and Love. I hope my influence leads to life And ultimately to the Source. And it would be great to know that I Helped someone to change their course. Manly dude’s attitudes and platitudes
OK, this is a manly post. So, women are only allowed as long as they intend to use the information to help the men in their lives. Are we clear? Good. Let’s proceed… As I was searching for some clothes, online, yesterday, an ad popped up (who’d’ve thunk it) with a reference to manly clothes. And I thought, “Hey, that’s definitely me. I’d better check this out.” So, I clicked, saw some clothes that didn’t impress me, and started to click away. But then some links popped up about masculinity. So, since I know how toxic that is, I took the bait and clicked one. And I found an article about what’s considered manly. And the first thing on their list was muscles. They mentioned how, way back in the twentieth century, manly men were the muscular and strong types. Those were the type you’d see in ads and commercials. But nowadays billboards and TV ads lean more toward the “delicate” side (Does someone have some ginger? I think I’m gonna be ill). But that’s advertising. What about the real world. Well, it turns out women are more attracted to men who are at least moderately fit and muscular. And men tend to have more respect for other guys like that. They see them as inspiration and motivation to better themselves. And that totally makes sense. Because no man should aspire to be delicate or porky. Another manly attribute in the list was the ability to play an instrument AND sing. And they made a point of stressing the two together. It’s great to be able to play an instrument for an audience. But there’s a much more highly regarded perception of the guy who can get in the spotlight and play AND sing. That kind of man is seen to be an educated and artistic person. A confident and even romantic person. And a guy who’s more likely to have higher social standing because he’s willing to stand up in front of a crowd. Ok, Ok. I’m liking this article. It makes total sense. Uh-oh…they just swerved in the wrong direction a little. Because they said guys who ride motorcycles are considered manly. And the perception there is how women see them as risk takers. Guys who would probably lay down their lives, if necessary, to save the ones they love. Trouble is…there’s the rather constant threat of laying down the bike. Plus, have you seen those guys who ride Harleys? Most of them don’t exactly fit into that first muscular category. Well, let’s see what else defines masculinity. Oh no. Another detour. Smoking. Apparently it’s another risk related attribute of manliness. But I’m willing to bet more women, these days, find men more attractive (and manly) if they don’t carry a pack of cigarettes around in their t-shirt sleeve. Now, I really like the next two attributes of a real man. Beards and guns. There’s nothing that distinguishes real men from women and boys than a beard. And this can be from a scruff to a full beard, although I recommend you skip the scruff. Go for the real deal. And the article mentioned a quote from Tony Robbins about guns. Apparently he made a point when he asked, “When a man puts a gun to your head, how important is he from 0 to 10?” Of course, that’s not what any gun owner guy should have in mind for his weapons. But the point is…when you’re willing to arm yourself and show that you’re willing to defend yourself, that’s pretty darn manly. Next on the list is one I like because it goes back to the days when I was growing up. Back when men were more in control of their emotions. The article pointed out how people who turn even the smallest issues into earth-shattering scenes are called drama “queens.” Not drama kings. And while it’s not un-masculine to cry, it’s way more masculine to control your feelings if you’re a man. Because it’s another way to set yourself apart from women. And, even though they say they want you to be able to express your feelings, they don’t like it if you cry the way they do. So, bottom line? You don’t have to be emotionless. But it’s good to show those emotions…less. And speaking of emotional outbursts…how about when a woman sees a spider in the shower? Or snakes in the back yard? Or mice and rats basically anywhere? Yeah. And what do real men do? They handle it. You wanna make some easy masculine points? Go kill the spider. Or snake. Or rodents. And get them out of your territory. Show ’em who’s boss. Because no real woman wants to see a man scream like a girl at the sight of sneaky, slimy, venomous creatures. And there were several other attributes of manliness, but I’ll share just two more. Mostly because they support my self-perception. But also because they might help another guy, out there somewhere, move away from the pastel curtains and throw pillows. Be able to fix stuff. From tech, to automotive, to plumbing and electrical, and definitely to computer and mobile device issues. Of course, a lot of those things are getting so complicated you almost need a specialist for each area of life. And updates and upgrades happen so fast, nowadays, even us high IQ types can’t keep up with all of it. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have manly powers of logic and deductive reason. Because, that way, you can determine what needs to be done even if you don’t have the tools or other resources to do it yourself. Oh yeah, there’s nothing like gettin’ it done. And finally, there’s clothes. Dark clothes to be more exact. Dark clothes are recommended as more manly. And I get it. After all, it’s that whole perception thing again. Rich and powerful CEO’s and other movers and shakers tend to wear dark suits. But I’m a little torn on this one. Because I DO wear mostly dark clothes. But over the years, when I was a full time musician, in front of audiences (see the playing and singing section above) I chose to wear bright colors. Shirts, shoes, and even suits that made bold statements. Like the time I wore a pink tux to play a wedding reception. And I guarantee there were no females there who thought of me as anything but manly. But before I make this all about me and my bold, masculine style, I’ll just say this. Guys…be as masculine as you possibly can. And don’t be fooled by so-called societal norms. Be secure in the knowledge that your true norm is to be a man. And it beats being a woman. Hands down, no comparison. No contest. Unless you really ARE a woman. Then, that’s for another article. Be a man. Yes you can… Be a man. Here’s the plan. Your lifespan, Be a man. Ring of fire goes higher and higher
He said he had a dream where he heard Mexican trumpets. And I guess that’s how they became such a recognizable part of his hit song, “Ring of Fire.” In fact, it went to number 1 on March 25, 1963. And it stayed there for seven weeks. Not bad for a guy whose last name was Cash but was born into a family who didn’t have loads of it. Johnny Cash made “Ring of Fire” one of his signature songs. And it was actually written by his wife, June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore. And you probably didn’t know this, but June’s sister, Anita, sang and recorded the song first. But Johnny put his signature style to it, and most people would never guess it was written or sung by anyone else. Plus, Johnny Cash lived a life that synced up with many of the songs he recorded. So, people found it easy to associate him with the words and music. His biography reads like the sadly typical Hollywood drug addiction stereotype. Amphetamines, barbiturates, jail time, rehabilitation, and relapses. No wonder he was so believable when he sang “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I Walk The Line.” I can appreciate Johnny’s dedication to his craft. And I get how so many people might relate to a regular guy singin’ about real life troubles and challenges. But Mr. Cash wouldn’t have had much of a career if he depended on me for album sales. As I’ve said before, I’m not a country music fan. But I remember Johnny Cash songs playin’ in my parents’ house. And my Uncle Drexel, who played guitar and sang on an amateur level, certainly enjoyed those songs. So, I was indirectly connected to the music and the stories. And it seemed only natural to experience a little sadness when I heard Johnny died in September of 2003. But the good news is…Johnny Cash, who was inducted into not only the Country Music Hall of Fame, but also the Rock-n-Roll AND Gospel Music halls of fame, went to Heaven. Because, despite all his fame, and despite all his drug addiction and jail time problems, he was humble enough to admit he needed the salvation offered and provided by Jesus. So, instead of Johnny going down into a burnin’ ring of fire while the flames went higher, he went higher than anywhere in this world. And I hope you’ll walk the line And skip the prison blues That trap your mortal soul And steal your dancin’ shoes. Because this life is short And full of doubt and pain. So, listen to that voice That’s still inside your brain. And give yourself the chance For life and happiness. The offer’s there and free. Don’t hesitate. Say yes. Issues of society remain the same variety
Different people don’t tend to get along so well. Have you noticed that? And history books denote sections of time, most often, using wars as markers. And almost all of those wars were between different peoples. Although it could be argued that America’s own civil war runs contrary to that assertion. But it doesn’t diminish my point. Which is how the basic issues of society haven’t changed much. And the mass murders, quickly adding up the first quarter of 2021, are somber examples of our corporate inabilities to address the problems with wisdom. Instead…politicians, people calling themselves journalists, celebrities of all kinds, and even your garden variety neighbors spend countless hours trying to understand. What kind of animal/monster/person could he have done this? How could someone like this get to this point? Etc. Etc. Etc. And then, naturally, calls for stricter, more stringent laws go out. And large numbers of so-called “caring individuals” jump on the bandwagon. “We gotta do a better job of educating.” Or “It’s too easy to get your hands on weapons of mass destruction.” Or how about the ubiquitous, “There oughta be a law.” If the issues of society could be solved with laws…why haven’t they been? I read an article, from six years ago, that said there are at least 5000 federal laws on the books. And there are somewhere between 10,000 and 300,000 regulations to go with those laws. And those are all just on the federal level. Those numbers don’t include state, county, and local laws. So, if more laws would do the trick…why haven’t they? Because they don’t address the root cause for the even the least harmful issues of society. Much less the mass murders epidemic. And I can hear somebody ask, “OK, Tony…if there’s a so-called root cause for it all, what is it?” Selfishness. And to put a little more polish on it, rebellious selfishness. For example, when a despicable human being goes into a grocery store and shoots people he doesn’t even know, who do you think is his top priority? Yeah…self. And I can say “despicable human being” because that’s the kind of human being who murders. “Good people” don’t murder. And I put quotes around “good people” because no one is good except God. But anyway…when you hate your fellow man, and love only yourself, you can do the worst things. So, how do so many people get to the point of murder? Sadly, it’s because they’re raised on hate. Yeah, hate is taught in public schools, on TV, and in most major Hollywood movies. Kids are taught, from the earliest ages, that we came from animals. That we humans are just another animal. And what do animals do to survive? The strong ones kill and eat the weak ones. So, what’s the answer to all this destructive teaching? What can solve the issues of society, if it’s not new and better laws? In a word…love. In three words…love AND hate. What?! Solve the problem of hate with more hate? Yeah. But not the kind of hate you might be picturing in your head. The kind of hate that adds wisdom to love. God inspired Paul to write “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.” And to abhor means to hate with all your might. But notice, Paul sandwiched the hate between love and good. Pretty cool, right? This will sound somewhat counterintuitive. But if you “love your neighbor,” then you’ll hate him when he’s evil. And you’ll tell him (or her) when he’s evil. And you’ll love him enough to tell him he’s on a path to hell. But if you hate him enough, you’ll look for ways to “understand” his motives. I didn’t come up with this concept. I’m a messenger. The only thing one person needs, in order for us to have love/hate issues, is another person. And when the issues of society include mass murders and judicial confusion, the message is more important than ever. Accept or reject, Invite or lose sight, Draw near or pick fear, Choose or lose, Life. Love. Jesus. Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Older and wiser? Or a truth compromiser?
Older and wiser. They should go together like sourdough bread and grass fed butter. But they don’t always. Especially in town of Ignoraville, on Mount Wealthscape, in the land of Rebelaphant. Sadly, most of the residents of Rebelephant aren’t older and wiser. But they’re richer. And that’s the most frequent cause of a lack of wisdom. And the ratio of wisdom to wealth decreases as the wealth increases. For example, the richest person in rock or pop music. Paul McCartney. I remember listening to and enjoying so many of McCartney’s hits back in the 70’s. And he truly was a hit making machine. No wonder his net worth is over a billion dollars (which I’m sure he accumulated by accident since he believes in eradicating poverty). And I’m one of those who thinks he was, by far, the most talented member of the Beatles. But, as he’s gotten older (79 this year), Paul has gone from singing catchy tunes like “Silly Love Songs,” back in the 70’s, to “Fuh You” from 2018. Of course, he calls the newer song a “schoolboy prank.” And the lyrics are clever innuendo. So, it’s open to interpretation. But that doesn’t negate my point. From innocence to innuendo. As he’s gotten older, his true wisdom (if he’s ever had any) has dwindled away like the fadeouts at the end of many of his hit songs. And McCartney is just one example, in an almost endless parade of examples of rich rogues from Rebelaphant. Almost every one of us is impacted by these scoundrels, in some way, almost every day. For example, the owners of Facebook, Twitter, and other big social media channels. And the owners of Amazon and former owner of Microsoft. Or how about billionaire real estate moguls from Berkshire Hathaway? And a lunkheaded billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team. I could go on and on and on. But I’m sure you get it. Just close your eyes and visualize a big, clunky camel squeezing its hoof through a sewing needle. Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. And so it is for most rich men (and women) and Heaven. But where there’s life, there’s hope. And I hope Mr. McCartney’s understanding and wisdom turn around before it’s too late. I hope he discovers how Jesus is still saying to him, “I wanna hold your hand and give you eternal life.” And I hope he doesn’t end up like Father Makenzie, from the song “Eleanor Rigby.” “Father McKenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear No one comes near Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there’s nobody there What does he care? All the lonely people Where do they all come from? All the lonely people Where do they all belong?” Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Wear your heart on your sleeve and hate what I believe
This comes from back in the days of knights and lords and ladies. Apparently it was customary for a knight to wear the name of a certain lady during a tournament. And it was typically the lady he loved…or would compete to impress. In other words, he was laying it all out in the open. These days, when you wear your heart on your sleeve, you’re probably revealing your innermost thoughts. So, you don’t have to literally wear your heart on your sleeve like knights did. In fact, you have lots of options for revealing your thoughts and laying it all out there. You’re reading an example right now. Yeah, each time I write an article here on TonyFunderburk.com I wear my heart on my sleeve. At least a little. Not to impress the lords and ladies. But to hopefully shed and share a little light of truth, some music, and logic and reason. But to borrow a line from a Kim Carnes song, “That’s where the trouble starts.” Because one man’s truth, logic, and reason is another man’s hate speech. And that happens so often because truth is hate to those who hate the truth. I’m not a fan of labeling humans according to paint colors. In fact, even though it’s probably a losing battle, I’m against the human color codes. I’ve written about it before. Red, yellow, black, and white are not skin colors. They’re paints. Or crayons. But most certainly not skin colors. And I get it. Those colors are so ingrained in our minds now, it’s difficult to think of describing other people without using the RYBW scale. But it’s worth the effort to re-train your brain. Otherwise you’ll end up saying silly stuff like “black lives matter.” And that could become such a thorn in somebody’s side that they’ll end up feeling the need to say “It’s OK to be white.” And claws and fangs will pop out everywhere. Of course “black” lives matter. And of course it’s OK to be “white.” But that’s because all human lives matter. And there are many shades of skin colors. One is not better or worse than the next. But evidently humans just can’t go five minutes without picking a fight. Actually, that’s probably being generous. Humans can’t seem to go five seconds without picking a fight. Or having to deal with somebody else who’s picking one. And so we end up with this kind of world: “unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful…” If you’re paying attention, you see this in living color. All around the world. And especially right here in the good ol’ U. S. of A. There IS a cure. But it requires people of all skin shades to do something most of them seem completely unwilling to do. Love. But not hypocritical love. You see that kind everywhere in people who claim to love, accept, and tolerate everyone. But their love turns to vitriolic hate when someone dares to claim there is only one God. And one absolute Truth. And one Way to Heaven. Those claims will NOT be loved, accepted, or tolerated. But just because people will hate you for standing firm on God’s word doesn’t mean you don’t do it. Remember, Jesus said “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me before it hated you.” So, you’re in the best company even in the worst of times. And, as for me… I plan to wear my heart on my sleeve And share the reasons for what I believe. And I’ll be sharing as long as I live Because God’s love is the best gift to give. Miracles song brought this thought along
47 years ago? Can it truly be that long? But you know what they say. Math don’t lie. And the numbers add up to (or subtract to) 47 years. I’m ramblin’ on about it because 1974 was the year, and today was the day (March 19), the band, Jefferson Airplane, became Jefferson Starship. And it was 1975 when they had a big hit with their “Miracles” song. And I can’t tell you how profoundly that song changed my life. No, I can’t tell you how the “Miracles” song changed my life because… It didn’t. In fact that song was more like a fingernail on a chalkboard to me. And no matter how many times I heard it, I just didn’t like it. So, you might say, “Duh, Tony. Then, why’d you listen to it so many times?” Because it was a favorite song of a roommate of mine, back in my days as a bartender in a disco club in the greater Kansas City area. He was from California. And his nickname was “Moon Doggy.” And I’m not making that up. So, he’d been a fan of Jefferson Starship since their days as Jefferson Airplane. And I guess he just really, really liked their new sound. But that song drones on and on with lyrics repeated over and over. The message is clearly about a sexual relationship (big surprise in pop music, right?), and it repeats the phrase/chorus: “If only you believe like I believe, baby (If only you believe like I believe)We’d get byIf only you believe in miracles, baby (If only you believe in miracles)So would I” Not sure how many times that’s in the song. But I’m not gonna listen to it again and count. And I don’t recommend you do that either. Just take my word for it. It’s a lot. But this song came up in my head (oh brother) because of a thread of conversation I saw online recently. It was based on the question… “Do you believe in miracles?” And if you’re a Christian, I hope you realize what a stupid question that is. Because Christians, above all other people except maybe Jews, should believe they’re real. But the underlying (and overt) debate becomes whether or not miracles are “for today.” Of course, they’re not. But that doesn’t mean they’re not real. Because God is free to do as He sees fit. And He’s not constrained by any schedules we little humans put on the matter. But God has presented a wide range of dispensations, over the centuries, to save His creations. Some of those times included working miracles in the lives of His people. So, you read the Bible, and of course…you believe in them. But you keep reading the Bible and you see how faith doesn’t come by miracles. It comes by hearing. And hearing the Word. And you keep reading and digging deeper, and you see how those miraculous events almost always encouraged unbelief. Weird, right? Yeah, we humans tend to get downright weird about the amazing things God can do AND has done. And too many wanna watch “the show” rather than build a relationship with the One who made us. And here’s what I think is miraculous. The fact that God still desires to have anything at all to do with us. Especially considering how the vast majority of people on the planet hate Him. But He’s a God of love and loving relationships. And He’s willing to endure much hate to enjoy what little love He gets from us. So my answer to the question about believing in miracles is “Yes, I believe in them. But my trust is in the God who provided the one and only miracle I need (or anyone needs). God’s miracle that erases the need for any and all other miracles. The birth, life, death, and resurrection of His Son. Because that equals eternal life for me. And it shows the greatest Love. And Moon Doggie…if you’re listening… If only you believe and trust in God, You’ll do much more than just get by. If only you believe and trust in God, You’ll live forever when you die. Adrenal glands meet a lot of demands
Adrenal glands. Oh yeah, now we’re talking about some pretty exciting stuff. And I bet when you got up this morning the first thought you had, after your coffee kicked in, was “Where can I find me some stimulatin’ adrenal conversation?” Never fear, I’ve got your adrenal glands gossip right here. First, let’s talk about the easy-to-understand stuff. Like the zona glomerulosa, fasciculata, and reticularis. They don’t do so much. Just produce aldosterone, cortisol, and sex steroid hormone. So, no big deal. Then, there’s the adrenal medulla that produces catecholamines. Or maybe you know them by their hormonal names, epinephrine and norepinephrine. But again…no big deal. Same with the adrenal cortex. It’s the section that produces some hormones necessary for fluid and electrolyte (aka: salt) balance. Maybe you recognize their hormonal names: cortisol and aldosterone. And here’s some more Captain Obvious stuff: The zona glomerulosa converts progesterone, through a series of steps, to the mineralocorticoid aldosterone. Then, some other layers of the cortex convert progesterone to 17-hydroxyprogesterone. And then the progesterone is converted to either the 17-hydroxysteroid cortisol or the 17-ketosteroid sex hormones. Apparently every day these boring, little, triangle-shaped adrenal glands (located above your kidneys) secrete 15″“20 mg of cortisol, 25″“30 mg of androgens, and 75″“125 µg of aldosterone. Yeah, I know. Big yawn. Sure, I could blabber on and on about the ho-hum details of what your adrenal glands are doing while you’re enjoying your coffee and donuts. But your mind needs true stimulation. Right? And I’m sure you couldn’t care less about symptoms like… Where’s my caffeine? Why won’t my food (and my belly) go on down? Stop yelling at me chips, cookies, and cakes! I can’t get to sleep. No, wait. I can hardly wake up. Who you callin’ Fatso? Oh woe is me…all the time. Why is there so much hair in the sink the same color as mine? Thyroid schmyroid. Who needs it? Yeah, I know a lot of people believe all that stuff going on inside you just happened by accident. So, who cares that your adrenal medulla can be stimulated along its preganglionic sympathetic fibers? And who cares how that causes release of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine? Plus, it’s just a nice side effect that sympathetic neural outflow is increased by some silly-sounding fight-or-flight response. Right? Yeah, so what, if that can be triggered by fear and/or emotional stress? Or typical stuff like upright posture and pain, cold and hypotension, and hypoglycemia and more. Plus, Who needs to read all those made-up Bible stories about some silly notion of a “creation week” or worldwide flood? Who needs to read some white-haired old guys writings about humans being made from the dust of the earth? Because that certainly wouldn’t help anybody understand how norepinephrine exerts negative feedback at the preganglionic sympathetic receptors. Am I right? No, all those simplistic functions going on in just two tiny glands inside your body, which is made up of about 30 trillion cells, are just happening because they need to happen. Let’s not get all Biblical about it. Let’s just be glad our bodies work the way they do. And how it’s not a case of why or even who. Let’s keep evolving till we don’t need all this stuff Like skin and bones, because our minds will be enough. Yes, Let’s. Power amplifier turns the volume up way higher
Did you see that movie “This Is Spinal Tap” about a fictitious rock band in a fictitious rockumentary? If not, no great loss. I never saw the whole movie either. But I saw some funny clips. And one that stands out is one of the members of the band is asked why the knobs on his power amplifier go to 11 instead of the usual 10. And in a fictitious English accent he answers, “Well, it’s one louder isn’t it.” Yeah, when your goal is to be the loudest band in the world, it makes total sense to have volume knobs that go to 11. Of course, that only works till somebody figures out they can have theirs go to 12. Then, all bets are off. But they all lose. Because my power amplifier goes to infinity (and beyond). And back in 1977 I wrote some ethereal lyrics with an idea for a song. But it never materialized. And that doesn’t matter. Because the act of writing carries a writer along to eventually find the song. And that’s why I kept lots and lots of my non-song lyrics. Like this one… The Power If I sat down, and I took the time To correct the lines and absorb them all, I would sit in place for so long That the hourglass would surely rust and fall. But there is no need for me to worry. I don’t need to see. And I don’t need to feel. I might expect a change here and there, But surely you must see, Or at least you can feel The power is higher And all we have to do is close our eyes. If I stood still, and I counted days And made up ways to collect them all. I would never move “˜Cause there are no ways I can save them all and take the time. But there’s no need for me to worry” “˜Cause the power is higher And all we have to do is close our eyes. © 1977-2017 Tony Funderburk Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Negotiation day isn’t a million years away
I get regular emails from a guy who knows a thing or two about emails. And he often mentions another guy who the FBI describes as the most feared negotiator. So you’d probably want that guy on your team if you got into a hostage crisis. Or prisoner exchange. Or some sort of armed standoff. Yeah, I’m guessing that negotiation day would go more your way if this guy was on your team. But, unfortunately, you can’t get this guy on your team. Because he’s no longer here in the land of the living. But I read the transcripts of an interview another guy did with this negotiator. And one of the questions the interviewer asked was “what are the stages you go through in a tough negotiation?” And here’s part of what the negotiator said… Number one is you have to have a valid mission and purpose in place. You have to absolutely have a clear vision of your long term and continuing and long-term task of responsibility. That”Ÿs step one and that step never leaves you. In every engagement in every juncture you have to have that solidly in place, you have to own it, it has to be so clear to you that you see it clearly and the reason you have to have that is it will drive the decisions you make during the next stages of negotiation. The second stage is as problems arise, or as problems exist in the beginning, they must be dealt with. They must be negotiated. You can”Ÿt allow an elephant to stay in the room with you while you work through hard negotiations; you got to solve problems day in and day out as they arrive. The third step is you have to clear your mind of any opinions, assumptions, and expectations. All of that”Ÿs got to go away that’s the thing we teach called blank slate, we have got to blank our minds throughout the negotiation process. Number four is we have got to pay close attention when the adversaries demonstrate their emotions, their baggage, their expectations. We have got to pay close attention to that and note that, we have to have that written down, we have to use that to deal with that, to create vision that solves that and then next to last, and this is the hardest part…” That all sounds like great advice. And I like to refer to it when I need the info. It’s not like my business or daily to-do’s make for a serious negotiation day. But it’s good to be prepared. But there’ll be one negotiation day that none of his advice will work. Uh-oh…did you just feel a sharp right turn? Yeah, you can become another one of the world’s most feared negotiators, and none of your skills will help you when you stand in front of Life’s CEO and Chairman of the Board. Because opinions, assumptions, and expectations won’t matter. Your clear vision of where you’d like the negotiation to go won’t matter. And not even your amazing problem solving skills will help you. Of course, I’m talking about your judgment day. And if you’re gonna do any problem solving and vision building for your future, do it now. Because the choice you make today (right now would be great if you haven’t already) can affect your eternal future. So, it’s really a big deal. It’s not silly. It IS real. Judgment Day is coming soon. No one here will be immune. Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Blinded by the light of what’s true and right
“Blinded by the light. Revved up like a deuce, you know a runner in the night.” I remember listening to Manfred Mann’s Earth Band sing that song way back in the 1970’s. And I didn’t learn, till later, it was written by Bruce Springsteen (I’m not one of his fans). But it’s one of those songs that partly sticks in your brain because of the catchy phrase… Blinded by the light. And the, in the 80’s, along came another song like that. “She blinded me with science.” I still quote parts of that song anytime Elgielene cleans up and moves things around. “She’s tidied up a bit, and I can’t find anything,” the lyrics added. OK, so let’s get a little scientific. Imagine a single cell in your own body. It’s about 1/100 of a millimeter in diameter. Keep in mind, a typical dust particle is about 1/10 of a millimeter in diameter. And now imagine that one, tiny cell contains 25,000 genes and somewhere around 50,000 proteins. Wow, talk about feelin’ your Cheerios (oops, that reference might be too old for you). Anyway… Now, think about how YOU were once no more than that single, tiny cell. And that single cell eventually turned into 20-30 trillion other cells. And those cells formed all your working parts. Plus, every one of those cells have complex little “engines” working round the clock. I’m just gettin’ started. The complexity gets to me. And I wish it would get to everybody. But unfortunately, too many people bask in the evolutionary sun lamp and totally reject the Son who made the sun…which is way better than a sun lamp. For example, consider this. Researchers studied “the transcripts (copies of RNA produced from the DNA) of just 1% of the human genome. And they discovered… About 93% of the genome is transcribed (not 3%, as expected). Further study with more wide-ranging methods may raise this figure to 100%. Because much energy and coordination is required for transcription this means that probably the whole genome is used by the cell and there is no such thing as “˜junk DNA’. Exons are not gene-specific but are modules that can be joined to many different RNA transcripts. One exon (i.e. one part of one gene) can be used in combination with up to 33 different genes located on 14 different chromosomes. This means that one exon can specify one part shared in common by many different proteins. There is no “˜beads on a string’ linear arrangement of genes, but rather an interleaved structure of overlapping segments, with typically 5, 7, 9 or more transcripts coming from the one “˜gene’. Not just one strand, but both strands (sense and anti-sense) of the DNA are fully transcribed. Transcription proceeds not just one way but both backwards and forwards. Some guy named Joe is puttin’ on a good show
Ever since the Donald left the white house, some guy named Joe has been there. And he’s doin’ a good job. A mighty good job. So, I just wanted to touch base with you and let in on the latest political news. See ya later. (*needle scratch sound) Yeah, you know what’s dripping, don’t you? But I’m only being a little sarcastic. Mostly I mean it. Some guy named Joe, who pops up every now and then and pretends to know what’s going on, is actually doing a good job. Well, I guess I should clarify. Old Joe whatshisname is doing a good job of carrying out the anti-God agenda that leftists thinkers (and that’s an oxymoron) have up their virus-laden sleeves. Trouble is…at least for Joe…is he probably doesn’t even realize most of it. But I’m sure he wouldn’t care even if he DID realize what’s going on. Because people who wanna be kings and queens (and that goes for boys or girls) don’t want the whole issue of right and wrong bogging things down. It’s not a matter of what’s TRULY right or wrong. It’s all in how you FEEL about it. And as long as it makes you feel good to steal from hard-working people and give that money to people who won’t work, illegal immigrants, and anybody else who’ll vote for you, then do it. But the sad irony is how minuscule their little reigns of power will seem to them in the final analysis (aka White Throne Judgment). And I know that sounds like a lot of hooey to people who’d rather believe in aliens and that nothing created everything. But it’s still true. And as far as some guy named Joe, in Washington, is concerned… A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse. And a feeling is as good as logic, of course. And who cares what might happen because he’s immune, To the dire consequences, inside his cocoon. So, three cheers for the guy who says he’ll unify All of us who are ready to nod and comply. I believe he means what he’s saying. How ’bout you? Could he say it all, if it just wasn’t true? Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Divisive decisive and delightfully incisive
Mountain goats. Awesome animals that live high in the mountains most of the time. Mountain Goats…a stupid band from North Carolina who probably wouldn’t know truth if it zapped through their instruments, traveled up their fingers, and stimulated whatever brain cells they have left. But I don’t know them. So, maybe I shouldn’t get started on what I really think. Besides, I’m a white supremacist, racist, bigot, homophobic (and all other “woke” phobics) singer/songwriter. What do I know about truth and music? And I don’t wanna be divisive or anything. But wait. Isn’t it divisive to call someone a racist? I mean, if you start name-calling as you blast out expletives, how many huggy hug hugs are you gonna pile up. And ain’t that some of the rewards of inclusion? Huggy hug hugs. But it’s “all good” when you’re bleepin’ away for a leftist cause. Virtue signaling for a platform where God and truth aren’t welcome, appreciated, or tolerated. Case and point? The Mountain Goats (band) verbally attacked Eric Clapton and Van Morrison on social media (where all the brave soy boys thrive). Yeah, apparently Clapton and Morrison dared to write and perform protest songs. But not against the accepted targets. No, they’re protesting lockdowns. Say it ain’t so, Layla! Yeah, Clapton and Morrison recorded a song that Van wrote called “Stand and Deliver.” And Mr. Morrison released three other protest songs. “No More Lockdown” and “As I Walked Out” and “Born to be Free.” I’ve been a Van fan for a long time. Now, I might have to look at these songs more closely and see if his thinkin’ ain’t stinkin’. And my guess is, it ain’t. Because an article I read said the songs “portray the coronavirus lockdowns as ‘fascist’ and also hit Hollywood celebs for telling us what we’re supposed to feel.” Bam! Left jab and a right cross (subtle double entendre intended) I love it when basically anybody decides to choose right over popular. But it’s particularly satisfying to see popular music icons land on the right side of issues. And I say “land” because so often they got there due to economic concerns or other self-interests. And not from wisdom. But regardless of how they got there, it’s awesome to see well-known celebrities buck the virtue politics trends. And, in the music biz, you don’t get much more well-known than Eric Clapton and Van Morrison. 20 Grammys between them. And tons of other music awards for each of them. I’ve played (and continue to play) several of their songs throughout my years as a singer/performer. And those songs are some of most popular I’ve had in my repertoire. But now, with the so-called “cancel culture”, these two famous singer/songwriters are experiencing effects of social justice “warriors” who preach inclusion but practice hate. And it’s simply because they ask to see the science for lockdowns and mandates. Plus, they dare to stand for freedom and free enterprise. How divisive of them! Oh, da noive. Van Morrison’s lyrics include a jab at celebrities for “telling us what we’re supposed to feel.” And he asks “Is this a sovereign nation or a police state?” He even mentions “our God-given rights.” And Clapton said he’s glad Van is standing up for musicians who are struggling or broke because of the lockdowns. In fact, the proceeds from Morrison’s songs and performances are going to those musicians. But, ironically, both famous guys now have to deal with the idiotic social media “outrage.” And many of the mindless twits, who spew their self-righteous and stagnate commentary, are the kinds of “musicians” Morrison and Clapton are trying to help. I saw where one such dude, on Twitter, wrote “all of Clapton’s racism wouldn’t fit in one screenshot.” Yeah, Eric Clapton is a racist. Because he’s performed with scores of singers and songwriters whose skin is of the more mocha or dark chocolate tones. Yeah, that makes sense. So, once again, it doesn’t matter what’s true. What matters is how you FEEL. And if it FEELS right to you, then it IS right. Right? Wrong. Truth is always gonna be true. And Truth is always gonna seem like hate to those who hate the Truth. So, by default, it’s always gonna be divisive. But that’s eventually a good thing. And knowing that even Eric Clapton and Van Morrison understand that, in this case, inspires me to focus even more of my singer/songwriter skills on standing for Truth. Because when it comes to getting a point across, there’s almost nothing more magically effective than music. Stay true to what’s true. Keep it living in you. Stand up for what stands From the work of God’s hands. Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. No politics or religion makes you a silly pigeon
“Alright. We ain’t talkin’ no politics or religion around here. See? And I better not catch you playin’ the stool pigeon, or you’ll be wearin’ a pine overcoat. See?” Yeah, those gangsters, from the movies of the 30’s and 40’s really knew how to get their points across. And that’s back when men could be manly in movies, and audiences ate it up. But, wow. Look at how much times have changed. Now, so-called “men” demand no politics and religion. Yeah, guys who appear to be of the male persuasion, running companies that produce essentially nothing of lasting value, will censor your media if you disagree. Because they’re ridiculously ill-equipped to present a lucid, thoughtful counterpoint. So, they come up with the idea that if nobody is allowed to talk about politics or religion, conversations will stay civil, nice, and respectful. Don’t know about you, but I haven’t seen an increase in civility, niceness, or respect online. In fact, it appears to be quite the opposite. Even to the point of people who call themselves Christians dropping f-bombs all over social media. I’m not saying they’re not Christians. But I AM saying that sort of behavior belies the claim. And if you wanna continue to enjoy free speech and meaty discussions, even about politics and religion, don’t be pulled into the ways of the world. Hey…I think there’s a reference to that in the Bible. Let’s see. How did that go? If I could only remember. It’s something about not jumping off the cliff or into the fire just because everyone else does. No, that’s not it. Hmm…something like…everything old is new again. No. Oh forget it. But wait… No. Well, never mind. Just know you should not talk about no politics and religion (double negative equals?) Because most everything else is for everyone else. And until next time remember: A healthy lifestyle is the slowest way to die. And the only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth. So eat up and lie down and enjoy life. Mask mandate, let’s be straight, is so full of hate
Hate is push-button easy these days. And the mask mandate, that somebody named Polis living in the governor’s mansion in Colorado keeps extending, is proof of this. First, here’s why a mask mandate is a form of hate. If you love your fellow human beings, are you gonna force them to breathe bad air? No. And if you love your fellow human beings, do you want them to deal with extra fatigue, headaches, and loss of concentration on a daily basis? No. At least I hope your answer is no. Mine is. The only justification you can have for forcing people to wear a mask, when the science is clear that they’re not necessary, is that you don’t care about them or their health. And anyone who would continue such behavior is a control freak with a power/superiority complex. For example, the person, named Polis, who’s living in the Colorado governor’s mansion. And it appears Polis has found a way to extend the mandate by simply pushing a button. Polis found this nifty little feature on the Colorado government website, and said… “I just found this feature. I should’ve done it months ago,”Polis admits. “Everyone knows I’m going to keep extending the mandate, but this way I don’t even have to think about it, it just happens.” Don’t even have to think about it. Yeah, that sums up the willfully ignorant, leftist thought process. And I use the term “thought process” loosely. Those who are in rebellion against God, against truth, and against logic and reason, are deep diving into a bottomless whirlpool of fire. And they’ll eventually discover the endless mandate they imposed on themselves. And they’ll hate it. Guaranteed. Singin’ songs before the magistrate… Songs about the mandate and the hate… It’s important that my songs run straight To the Truth that will emancipate. Freedom is a right, but not without a fight
Freedom is a right. That should be self-evident (as somebody once wrote). But apparently, for a lot of knuckleheads, that information just can’t make it past the knuckles in those heads. So, they toss freedoms out just like they toss their fast-food trash out their car windows. And that means freedom is a right you gotta fight for. Uh-oh…did I just end a sentence with a preposition. Well, that’s OK. Because I believe in the preposition that all men (and even some women, too) are created equal. In value. So, that gives me the freedom to end a sentence with for. Bam! I did it again. Anyway… I’ve written on the subject of freedom over 80 times here on TonyFunderburk.com. And one of those times I talked about how you gotta keep fighting for freedom since there are so many willing to just give it up. Just like they give up being real men and real women. Here’s some of what I said, about the struggle, just four years ago… (…too many people believe only the government can take care of everybody. Too many people are willing to give up freedoms in order to be given something they didn’t earn. And in order for the government to be able to give anything to certain people, it must first take from other people. Don’t know if you know it, but government doesn’t make money. It can only spend what it takes from its citizens. For infrastructure and the defense of its people that’s perfectly logical and reasonable. But to simply take money from some and give it to others is”stealing. And stealing from hard workers is NEVER justifiable. At the heart of a successful society is FREEDOM. And all nations crumble when they remove freedom. Or limit it to the so-called “elite.” America will be no exception to that rule. This country can only avoid that crumbling fate when the exceptional, liberty-loving citizens refuse to be victims of tyranny. Open up, America. Freedom loves this land. Give yourself a fighting chance And a helping hand. You should be the beacon To the world in chains. Shine out from the mountain tops And across the plains. They can’t lockdown liberty, If you fight for it. Open up America. Time to recommit. Stay tuned, Get my Rhyme & Reason Podcast delivered (free) right to your device. Opinions count when they’re tantamount
Opinions count. Not all of them, of course. But the ones that are tantamount to truth…those count. And, sadly, there are fewer and fewer of those kinds. Because there’s an assault on truth the likes of which America has never seen before. And people who are in rebellion against God attempt to blur facts and figures as often as they stir the synthetic cream into their coffee. But Truth will not be blurred or squelched forever. Because opinions count, for good, when they line up with Truth. And I’m talking about the Truth that has always been. And always will be. The only Truth that will set you free. The Truth that blots out false knowledge and provides eternal life. Everything else is just idle babblings and contradictions. And those are just small-minded opinions. And… Everybody’s Got One Jesse says he wants equality; says we’ve got goals to reach. Jimmy’s war is with iniquity; says he’s got souls to teach. Norma claims that it’s her right to make her own decision. Nancy wildly disagrees; they’re on a one-way collision. Every time you know you’re right Your opinion’s like a stick of dynamite And everybody’s got one! Danny says he wants respect; says he’s got a job to do. But David jabs and pokes his fun; just the same as me and you. Pat declares we all should pay to clean up our environment. And Joan believes it’s federal; so leave it to the government. Every time you know you’re right Your opinion’s like a stick of dynamite And everybody’s got one…everybody’s got one. Everybody’s got one Sometimes it’s right, but sometimes we put it in the wrong place. Everybody’s got one Sometimes we should hold back, And those times we end up with egg on our face. It’s our right, but we’re not always right…not always right, But everybody’s got one. Scott insists that we evolved; that Darwin proved it years ago. But Tony’s faith is with his God; the Holy Spirit tells him so. And Sue defends the life she leads; calls herself a working girl. But Kathy says she sold her soul, and that’s the problem with the world. Word of the day and words at play
I’m a word nerd. And I’m certain I was born that way. So, you need to just love and understand me. And accept me for the identification I choose for myself. OK, now that I’ve gotten that heated rant off my chest…I only brought it up because of an online dictionary. I just got off the Merriam-Webster website where I found the word of the day. And I wasn’t even looking for it. I was actually there to compare a definition of a word I had just looked up on my computer’s dictionary app. But when I tapped into Merriam-Webster’s site, right there at the top, it said: Word of the Day and Words At Play No, I’m not kidding. They rhymed their links. And that’s not all. Just a little further down the page, they had a link that said, “Word nerds! Save words plus keep track of all your lookups.” But why am I making such a big deal out of this? And who cares what a dictionary website says anyway? Right? Well, it’s like your computer and devices know almost as much about you as you know yourself these days. And they serve up stuff you thought you only thought about. And because your mind was already on the subject, you click the links. It’s digitally freaky is what it is. Of course, I’m kidding (mostly) about the Merriam-Webster website. Because they’re a dictionary. So, naturally they’d be all about words. Even the word of the day. And words at play. And word nerds. But there’s a whole lot of that behind-the-scenes “listening” going on. If you think not, then either you don’t have a smartphone or computer connected to the internet, or you just haven’t noticed it yet. And the “listening” part got me thinking about the difference between human listening and God listening. And that difference boils down to one word. Grace. That word sums up the glory of God and the shortcomings and failures of man. Because God hears what we humans say, every day, and He still offers the Grace of eternal life to anyone with the humility to ask for it. You and I have done nothing, and never do anything, to deserve it. But God doesn’t listen to you with an agenda to trip you up or sell you something. He hears with a pure heart. And He wants us to have that, too. So, the only commandment He makes, during this dispensation of time is to love. Wow, who’d have thunk that my dictionary lookup, of an entirely different word, would lead to this short message about Grace and Love? No other doctrine or fable, no genealogy Compares to creation, with love, cosmology. So, I turn to the Lord of all understanding With the goal to do this one thing He’s commanding. Love. Freedom to assemble – not to tremble
I remember studying America’s founding documents when I was in school way back in the twentieth century. And I remember something called the “Bill of Rights.” It must’ve been a big deal. Because teachers and politicians always talked about the freedoms it “gave” all Americans. And one of those was the freedom to assemble. Something about people freely getting together…even if it was to “petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Yeah, America’s founding fathers wrote up something called a constitution. And they had some arguments about how much power it might give to the federal government. So, some of those guys opposed the constitution until others added that “Bill of Rights.” That’s apparently what they called the first several amendments to that constitution. And the opposing guys must’ve been OK with the “Bill of Rights” because it became a permanent part of the document. I think the reason this all might have been the way it worked out is because they were so profound in their use of the American language. For example, here’s one of the first lines in those amendments… “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Hey, I told you it was high-brow. Well, I’m told it was pretty great living in America while that “Bill of Rights” was in place. And I even have vague memories of it myself…being a boomer type dude. But now, even churches aren’t allowed to gather together and worship and sing without the fear of the pastor getting tossed into jail. Oh well. Time marches on. And rules change. So, who am I to grumble and reminisce? And what good would it do? Yeah, I think I’ll just use one of my last ounces of freedom to assemble these words together and fade gently into that viral, dark night… Freedom I’m gunning for the gold medal”aiming for the sun dance. Don’t wanna be a drifter all my life, I gotta take a new chance. I’ve driven down the pipeline. I’ve seen so many street signs. I’m headed back where I began to try to make it mine; all mine. And if I’ve even learned one thing, It’s that the music never stops. And if you dream inside a bubble, You’ll be surprised when the bubble pops. Oh, when the bubble pops! Freedom; don’t want to lose my freedom. I want to make my choice; make my voice be heard. Freedom; I’m glad I have my freedom. If all the world could see, It would have to be the word…Freedom! I’m shooting for the north star. And I’m tickling the silver strings. I’m glad I have the chance to chase ideas And turn them into real things. I’ve been down lots of broken roads, Forgot about my Guiding Light. But now I’m going back where I belong. And everything is alright. And if I’ve even learned one thing, It’s that the music never dies. And if you never reach your rainbow, At least you’ll see the bluer skies. Oh yeah, the bluer skies.
