The Present Teacher Podcast

Teaching was never supposed to cost you your health, your time, or your identity. The Present Teacher Podcast is for educators who are done glorifying burnout, overwork, and self-sacrifice—and are ready to build a sustainable teaching career instead.Hosted by Helena Hains, this podcast challenges the unspoken rules of the education system and names the truths teachers are often too afraid to say out loud:burnout isn’t a personal failure, classroom chaos isn’t always a management issue, and working harder is rarely the solution. Each week, we explore the truths teachers are rarely encouraged to say out loud, including:• Why burnout isn’t a time-management problem• How interviews and school culture predict long-term exhaustion• Why classroom setup and management affect your nervous system• How to leave on time without guilt• And how to build a teaching career that doesn’t cost you yourselfThis podcast covers four core pillars:Teacher Interviews | Classroom Setup | Classroom

#192: You Are NOT The Same Teacher As Last Year

Last year does not define the teacher you are becoming. Maybe you were non-renewed.Maybe you received a difficult observation.Maybe you were placed on an improvement plan.Maybe you left a district that wasn't the right fit. If you've been carrying the weight of last school year into this one, this episode is for you. In today's conversation, I'm sharing one of the hardest lessons I learned after experiencing seven classroom evacuations in a single day and believing it meant I was a terrible teacher. Looking back, I realize those moments didn't define me—they developed me. We'll talk about how to stop identifying with your past experiences, recognize the strengths they've created, and walk into this school year as the teacher you are today—not the teacher you were. Because you are not your last year. In this episode, we'll cover: Why last year's struggles don't define your identity as a teacher The mindset shift that changed how I viewed difficult classroom experiences How your hardest teaching moments became your greatest strengths A simple reflection exercise to help you release last school year How to step confidently into a fresh start this school year If this episode encouraged you, be sure to subscribe and share it with another teacher who needs the reminder that they are not their past. In today's episode, I'm sharing the story of my very first classroom and how I spent an entire summer focused on making it cute—only to find myself scrambling the week before school started. Then we'll fast forward several years later when I started in a brand-new district, spent a week on my honeymoon in Costa Rica, only worked in my classroom for about a week that summer, and somehow felt more prepared than ever. You'll learn:✨ The biggest mistake teachers make during back-to-school season✨ Why classroom setup feels so overwhelming✨ How to stop wasting time on the wrong things✨ What to focus on before you put a single thing on the wall✨ Why preparation starts with a plan—not more hoursIf you've ever felt overwhelmed, behind, or unsure where to start, this episode is for you. #182: Why 'Just Get Your Foot In The Door' Is Terrible Advice for New Teachers

Everyone says the same thing to new teachers: “Just get your foot in the door.” But what if that advice is the exact reason so many teachers burn out in their first few years? We’re talking about: The fear-based thinking behind “apply everywhere” The hidden cost of misaligned districts Why so many teachers leave (and it’s not because of skill) The identity shift from desperate → discerning How to approach your job search with alignment instead of panic Because your first teaching job doesn’t just “get you in the door.” It shapes your entire career. #176: Why You Are Being Judged For Setting Boundaries As a Teacher

If you’ve ever: • Declined summer school • Stopped staying late • Refused to work weekends • Asked to meet during contract hours instead of after And been told you’re “not a team player”… This episode is for you. I share the first time I was publicly pressured to work summer school — including the moment admin interrupted my lesson to show me how much money I’d make — and why I still said no. We’re diving into: • Why boundaries trigger coworkers • The hidden rules of martyr teacher culture • Why judgment feels personal • What it actually means when someone resists your boundary • How boundaries create long-term sustainability You’re not being judged because you’re wrong. You’re being judged because you’re different. And different often feels threatening. Let’s unpack it. You Were Trained to Feel Guilty for Leaving on Time If you’ve ever walked to your car at contract time and felt that tightness in your chest… Like someone is watching. Like someone is judging. Like you should stay longer. This episode is for you. I share the first time a coworker accused me of not being a “team player” because I left on time — and why that moment changed everything for me. We’re diving into: • Where teacher guilt really comes from • How school culture reinforces martyrdom • Why leaving at contract time feels rebellious • The psychology of belonging at work • How to shift from guilt to neutrality You don’t feel guilty because you’re wrong. #174: The Biggest Lie Teachers Are Taught About Hard Work

Teachers are told from the very beginning: “If you really care, you’ll sacrifice.” Stay late. Take work home. Be a team player. Do more. Give more. Sacrifice more. In this episode, I’m exposing the biggest lie teachers are taught about hard work — and how it leads directly to burnout, resentment, and exhaustion. I share: • The year I worked day and night and still struggled with results • Real comments from coworkers and online culture • Why martyr teacher culture persists • The psychological profile of the high-achieving teacher • The cost of tying your worth to long hours • How to redefine success on your own terms You’ll walk away with: • A powerful reflection exercise • A new definition of hard work • Permission to protect your energy • A practical action step you can implement this week Because working yourself into the ground is not proof that you care. #173: Burnout Isn’t a Time-Management Problem (It’s a Nervous System Problem)

Burnout Isn’t a Time-Management Problem (It’s a Nervous System Problem) You don’t need another planner. You don’t need more discipline. You don’t need to “try harder.” In this episode, we’re talking about something most teacher productivity advice completely ignores: Your nervous system. I share a time when I had all the right systems in place to make teaching easier — and I still self-sabotaged. I filled my time with unnecessary tasks. Stayed late when I didn’t need to. Made simple planning take hours. Not because I lacked time management. But because calm didn’t feel safe. In this episode, we cover: • Why chronic stress keeps teachers in survival mode • What happens when your body gets used to chaos • Signs of a dysregulated nervous system • Why rest can feel uncomfortable • Practical ways to create predictability in your classroom • How systems regulate your nervous system If you’ve ever felt: “I’m doing everything right and I’m still exhausted.” This conversation will help you understand why. Burnout isn’t weakness. It’s your body asking for safety. And we can build that. You know the one. She leaves at contract time. Her classroom runs smoothly. She doesn’t look stressed. She’s planned ahead. She doesn’t bring work home. And you can’t help but wonder… How? In today’s episode, I’m breaking down what “That Teacher Next Door” actually does differently — and why it’s not about working harder. I share: • The first time I met “that teacher” • The jealousy vs. inspiration choice we all face • The moment I realized I had become her • Why systems — not luck — change everything • How to stop tying your worth to productivity • How to experiment until you find what works for YOU You’ll walk away with: • Clear action steps • Reflection questions • A new way to think about sustainable teaching • Permission to let it be easier You can either judge her. #164: The Secret to Seamless Center Transitions (Without Saying a Word)

What if I told you I have my students switch centers or stations everyday without me saying anything? Freeing me up to work one-on-one with students or in small groups at the back of my classroom for an average of an hour a day. What could you do with that extra hour? Could you help individual students make the leaps in growth that you've been craving?   Today, I am talking about how my students transition from one center to another without me. All with a little help from music and a timer. Managing a classroom doesn't have to be hard during centers. Especially when students are responsible for their behaviors without you.   We'll be talking about how the use of classroom jobs, how I transition my kids using music, and how my students run centers without me, lead to an enjoyable experience for everyone. So much so that I can teach at the teacher table guilt-free, while sipping my hot cup of chai.    Download the Ultimate Classroom Management Guide Here: https://thepresentteacher.mykajabi.com/classroom-management-guide  Check Out My Classroom Procedure Slides for Inspo: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Nature-Theme-Classroom-Procedures-Slides-11985169  Get Access to the Ultimate Classroom Management Bundle: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Ultimate-Classroom-Management-Bundle-12219499?st=94900c5f462cfd33e73369c219124e7a  Get Support inside The Present Teacher Circle Community: https://thepresentteacher.com/present-teacher-circle/  ___________________________ ❤️Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/thepresentteacher/ 🔥TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@thepresentteacher 🚀Website | https://thepresentteacher.com/ 💜YouTube | https://youtube.com/@ThePresentTeacher?si=meqMmiDHJN-0Jmlr ___________________________ // ABOUT I’m Helena, a coach for new and first-year teachers sharing knowledge on how to have a thriving career and personal life. #163: How to Get Students to Run Centers Without You

One of the biggest reasons most teachers don't implement centers or stations in their classrooms is because they think it will take a lot of work and it will be a classroom management disaster. But that couldn't be farther from the truth. The truth is, there's a way to get your students to run centers without you saying a word. And that's what we are diving into today.   Today we will be covering how I get my students to run centers without me using classroom procedures, how long I practice centers before releasing control to my students, how to add in rotations so transitions are seamless, and how to keep students accountable for their work during centers without micromanaging.    The truth is, centers are a great way to meet the needs of your students while reinforcing what you are already learning in class. #162: How to Set Up Centers So They Practically Run Themselves

Setting up centers for the first time can be hard. Especially when you're not sure where to even start. Today, we'll be diving into my top strategies on how to set up centers so they practically run themselves.   Centers are a great way to meet the needs of individual students while simultaneously reviewing or cementing in concepts you are covering in class. In this week's content, we'll be covering how to plan centers so they run seamlessly. We'll also be talking about how to prep them in a short amount of time without the hustle.    One of the most common misconceptions about centers is that in order to have great running centers, you have to be very hands-on. But the truth is, I don't do a lot when it comes to centers. My students do a majority of the work. #138: How I Landed My First Teaching Position: My Interview Story

When I applied for my first teaching position, I was TERRIFIED districts wouldn't take me seriously because I was only 21 years old. I had just graduated with my masters, and I had wanted to teach since I was 5 years old.    Fast forward to Spring of 2018, I flew from Oregon to New Mexico for two different job interviews. Both of which regard me to teach a demo lesson. I turned my biggest weakness as a teacher into my biggest strength.    I did TWO interviews on the same day and BOTH of them offered me the teaching position DURING the interview. Here's a breakdown of all the steps and teacher interview strategies I took to get there.  Download the Ultimate Teacher Interview Guide: https://www.thepresentteacher.com/teacher-interview-guide   Ultimate Teacher Interview Bundle: https://www.thepresentteacher.com/teacher-interview-bundle    Land Your Dream Job: https://www.thepresentteacher.com/land-your-dream-job ___________________________❤️Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/thepresentteacher/🔥TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@thepresentteacher🚀Website | https://thepresentteacher.com/💜YouTube | https://youtube.com/@ThePresentTeacher?si=meqMmiDHJN-0Jmlr___________________________// RESOURCES💌 Join our email list for weekly motivation | https://www.thepresentteacher.com/teacher-interview-guide 🌼 Join our Community off of Facebook | https://www.thepresentteacher.com/offers/QUzcjYLT ___________________________//  ABOUTI’m Helena, a coach for new and first-year teachers sharing knowledge on how to have a thriving career and personal life. The Present Teacher Podcast is a resourcefor teacher interviews, classroom setup, classroom management, and time management.
