Today on the show Gibbs talks with Team Lancaster Thunder about some leadership principles that have been helpful over the years. Over the weekend we saw leaders in the international soccer community oppose FIFA and their monetization plan. Similar to the opposition to the Champions Super League a few years ago. Leaders standing up for what is right and good even if it may be unpopular is part of the job description.  You are a leader. At a minimum you are responsible for leadership of yourself. Gibbs talks about Psalm 23 and some leadership lessons he has learned over the years from the occupation of shepherding and how it applies to sports and life. Shepherds have two main objectives in order to keep sheep healthy and productive. 1) Create a safe environment for the sheep to thrive 2) Take the sheep to healthy grazing and clean water. That is the core of good shepherding and the simplest form of the mission. Where is the green grass and clean water for your leadership responsibilities? What does it look like to create an environment where people feel safe physically, mentally, and spiritually so they can thrive? In order to create these environments the shepherd needs to know the sheep well and the shepherd needs to be accountable for the sheep and the journey to where he is leading them. When you see the "C" on a jersey, the captain patch on a players arm, the green dot on the helmet, all these are signals that an individual is responsible for the green grass, the fresh water, and the safe environment for thriving. It was a little bit of a picture of the whole July 4 weekend which saw the country enduring record heat culminating in tremendous storms which put a damper on the highly anticipated fireworks celebrating 250 years of the USA being a country. This sums up the Men's soccer team in the test against Belgium as well. Two games were decided from the penalty spot after 120 minutes of competition and the tension was thick as World Cup dreams were on the line. Gibbs was drawn to thoughts of eternity as he watched the shootout between Germany and Paraguay unfold. He was also taken back to the 1994 World Cup sadness of Roberto Baggio and a memorable miss from the spot in a World Cup final that Baggio still seems to carry with him to this day. Every person on earth has a future appointment with the triune God. Just as a penalty kick is full of tension and confrontation; for those under the wrath of God, that meeting will be fearsome and pressure packed. Watching Game 3 of the NBA Finals or any game for that matter puts time into a clear perspective. We have all had the experience of playing a game you want to win and you see the end of the game quickly approaching. The clock is running down, the outs are quickly piling up, there are only a few plays left. We have all felt that pressure before. Gibbs talks today about the weight of time. In order for a person to reach the lofty heights of professional sports it requires a singular dedication and focus to their craft to get a shot at that success. Often once success is achieved it is easy for people to drift from the habits that laid the foundation for success. As followers of Jesus we cannot drift from the good news of Jesus. Jesus came preaching a message of repentance from sin. We cannot share a different message than one Jesus shared and call it good news.
