    The RCHT Radio show broadcast for the final time on the 31st March 2026 and in our final show we heard from our freedom to speak up guardians Jo Burton and David Kinnair in the studio to, firstly introduce David as he started the role earlier this month, and talk about the speaking up options available to our staff.Dom Whitting our lead for chaplaincy and voluntary services joins me in the studio to talk about the lead chaplain role, the work of our volunteers, and how festivals like easter impact the work of the team.And on the 21st of April, our chief executive Steve Williamson will be leaving Royal Cornwall Hospitals to take over as Chief Executive at Morcombe Bay NHS Trust. We’ll be hearing from Steve as he reflects on the achievements of RCHT over the past four years and the outstanding staff working here.     RCHT's New Robot

    Last week, Royal Cornwall Hospital celebrated the arrival of its new robotic surgical system. We speak to Professor James Clark who tells us us exactly what this system does, how it can make surgery less invasive, and how this £2 million investment will benefit the people of Cornwall.We also hear from Matthew Taylor from Taylor’s Tyres in Redruth who tells us why his company donated money to the robotic system. And we’ll also hear from our Chief Strategy Officer, Ella Stracey about how the investment meets all our objectives as an organisation.

    This week it's nutrition and hydration week. Katrina Trevains and Lorna Rooney discuss why nutrition and hydration are such an important part of patient care, and how poor intake can have a real impact on recovery and wellbeing. They explain how hospital teams identify patients at risk of malnutrition or swallowing difficulties and support them to eat and drink safely.

    The Accessibility Advisory Group

    Pete and I went to West Cornwall Hospital with Carolyn from the communications team to meet the accessibility advisory group, who played a key role in making the new outpatients department more accessible for people with disabilities. Also - our clinical director for surgery and robotics project lead, James Clark, met with Pete in theatres here at Royal Cornwall Hospital to talk about the new robotics system we’re installing to enhance the surgical precision offered to patients in Cornwall.

    Our clinical director for surgery, James Clark, recently hosted a conference here at Royal Cornwall Hospital about moving services from hospital to community. We’ll hear from James and colleagues about the difference this move is going to make to how our patients are cared for.

    Pedal 4 Patients!

    We have Fundraising manager Karen Murrish and Martin Searl in the studio with us to talk about why he’s raising money for our hospitals by taking part in pedal for patients for the second time. Cancer research patient Jacqui Eastwood will be sharing her story about the care and treatment she’s received at Royal Cornwall Hospital as part of two cancer research trials.

    RCHT Charity fundraising efforts

    We have Maggie and Julie in the studio from the Newquay Thursday Club who have raised an incredible amount of money for our Heart of Headland therapy boxes. We’ll be chatting about how it all started, the fundraising efforts behind it, and the real difference it’s making for patients here at Royal Cornwall Hospital Faith Toogood also joins us on the show to talk about the improvements being made to the Children’s Cancer Unit following incredible fundraising efforts by her team and celebrity chef Paul Ainsworth

    Taking a Stand & Taking Clinics Into the Community

    Tuesday 25 November marked the first day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, Jasmine Godwin joins us in the studio to tell us more about it and how the NHS in Cornwall is taking part in the campaign.Charlie visited Paradise Park to learn more about the outpatient clinic taking place in the Jungle Barn for children and their parents. Charlie talks with attendees, one of the doctors involved in delivering the clinics, and Roz Davies who explains the advantages of running clinics closer to home in a slightly more relaxed setting.

    What is the new Young Persons' Patient Council?

    This week is International fraud awareness week and to mark the occasion our Chief finance officer Ian Dean talks to our Senior local Counter Fraud Specialist Byron Kevern about the definition of fraud, how it affects healthcare organisations such as RCHT and ways in which we can help to prevent it as patients and staff.Last week, RCHT hosted its first Young Peoples Patient Group – we’ll be finding out what went on at this meeting and what our young people are hoping to change.

    Steve and David reflect on remembrance, inclusion, and progress at RCHT

    RCHT recognised Remembrance Day with a service in the chapel at Royal Cornwall Hospital and online. John Clague, Chair of the Armed Forces Network, shares what remembrance means to him as a veteran, and how the network supports colleagues and families connected to the armed forces.Flu cases are rising, and Chief Pharmacist Iain Davidson explains why it’s more important than ever for staff to get vaccinated. He highlights how early flu activity and the H3N2 strain are creating extra pressure this winter, and how vaccination protects both colleagues and patients.And finally, Chair David Allen and Chief Executive Steve Williamson join us to reflect on Remembrance, inclusion, and progress - from supporting our Armed Forces and celebrating Black History Month to improving patient care and staff experience across our hospitals.

    We're making improvements

    Leslie Rust, Senior Maintenance Manager, took us around the hospital site at RCHT to show the ongoing maintenance work and discuss the planned improvements aimed at keeping everyone safe and the hospital looking nice!Last month RCHT hosted a kidney cancer patient day sponsored by Action Kidney Cancer. It was only the third event of its kind in the UK. We speak with uro-oncology clinical nurse specialists, Debbie Victor and Natalie Davies, about what this day means to our patients.

    Life after the RAF at RCHT

    (1:00) With Remembrance Day just a few weeks away, I had the chance to chat with Paul Newton - a veteran who now works here at RCHT who has an important take on remembrance day. Paul talks about his time in the RAF and the support available for staff members at RCHT who’ve also served in the forces. (14:38) Last week, St Michael’s Mount lit up green for International Adolescent Health Week and RCHT is getting ready to launch a brand new Young Person’s Patient Council too. If you’re a somebody who wants to have a say and make a difference, stick around for more information.(18:21) The launch of our new electronic patient record “eCare” may bring some uncertainty to staff here at the Hospital.     Freedom to Speak Up Week

    (0:24) I attended the National Community Health and Wellbeing Workers Conference at the Eden Project recently, where people from across the country came together to celebrate the programme’s successes. The strategic lead for the programme, Donna Rowe, spoke with a few people to learn more about their hopes and aspirations for its future. (5:24) It’s Freedom to Speak Up Week, and we’ll be hearing from our Chief Executive, Steve Williamson, on the importance of speaking up, listening to one another, and building a workplace where everyone feels safe to share their voice.

    What is Hypersight and how does it improve the quality of cancer care at RCHT?

    (0:40) Last week we spoke about October being Black History Month, and Stoptober, a national campaign encouraging people to quit smoking, but among many other things, October is also Cyber Security Awareness Month,  We have Martin Price back on the show to remind us on how to keep safe online! (14:08) Thanks to £400,000 raised by the Sunrise Appeal, our brand new linear accelerators at RCHT are now equipped with Hypersight software, bringing even greater improvements to cancer treatment. We find out what Hypersight is, how it works, and the real difference it's making for both staff and patients.

    The Pink Ladies and Celebrating Black History Month

    The Quit for Life team (aka The Pink Ladies) join us in the studio to tell us all about Stoptober - the national campaign encouraging people to quit smoking, as well as the amazing work they do supporting people on their journey to becoming smoke-free.October is also black history month and this month’s theme is standing firm with power and pride. Our chief executive Steve Williamson met with the chair of our Ethnic Minorities network, Sandra Mitchelmore and they talk about why it’s important to recognise black history, the value of our staff networks, and how we’re celebrating at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.

    Martin Clunes Unveils New Outpatients Department

    (0:40) Our voluntary services manager, Verity Barker, will be joining us live in the studio to talk about her experiences as she bids farewell after 11 years in the role.  (18:30) We’ll be finding out what the priorities of our trust board are here at Royal Cornwall Hospital as Chair, David Allen joins us in the studio.  (36:56) Martin Clunes was at our brand new outpatient department’s unveiling at west cornwall hospital recently – so we’ll be hearing what Doc Martin thinks about the new facility!

    What Is World Patient Safety Day?

    Today is World Patient Safety Day and to mark the occasion we’ll be joined by Naomi Burden, our patient safety specialist, who will tell us how we’re supporting this year’s focus of child safety.  We’ll also be hearing from our director of nursing, Berni George and the work she does to support patient safety across our hosptials.

    How do we support homeless patients when they leave hospital?

    This week, Collette Henry and Alan Lamberton from the Homeless Hospital Discharge Team join Charlie to talk about the incredible work they do in supporting the homeless patients we see coming through our hospitals.And Carolyn Garman tours our estate with head of estates, Richard Parris as they discuss how the estates team manage the maintenance of our hospitals.

    What were the hospital's CQC inspection results?

    (1:18) Marie Therese House, Cornwall’s specialist inpatient neuro-rehabilitation unit, has celebrated the opening of its newly transformed garden with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by patients, colleagues, and Friends of St Michael’s Hospital. Our chief executive Steve Williamson attended to celebrate such a great achievement.(3:32)  In April, the Care Quality Commission, also known as the CQC, inspected urgent and emergency care, as well as medical services, at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The report keeps the site rated Requires Improvement overall, though care remains rated Good. Chief Executive Steve Williamson and Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals Berni George report on the findings and what this means for the hospital.(9:24) Last week, Will from the communications team visited The Cove to meet young people who’ve been affected by a cancer diagnosis and the amazing team that support them. We find out how their cancer diagnosis at a young age has impacted their lives and the difference that facilities like The Cove at RCHT and the amazing charities that help fund them make in supporting both their physical and mental health on that journey.

    Where is the new Women and Children's Hospital being built?

    (0:12) We’ve now seen 1000 patients come through our new medical rapid assessment and treatment unit and we’ll be hearing from some of our colleagues on the unit what it means to them and their patients. (3:49) We have a new plan for our Women and Children’s hospital, it’s going ahead but in a different location. Programme director, Roberta Fuller, will be telling us where it’s going and why we’re moving it.

    The Rainbow of Spirituality

    (0:47) We're joined by regular guest Em Dixon to talk about the rainbow of spirituality. Spirituality has many traditions, paths, and perspectives but they all have something in common - ways people try to make sense of life and connect with something bigger.(12:08) Also, in August of 1942 Truro was struck by a bombing raid that hit the old Royal Infirmary, claiming ten lives and injuring many. Charlie went along to Victoria Gardens with Armed Forces Network Chair John lague to reflect and commemorate the impact that the bombing had on the City of Truro. (18:04) This year marks 80 years since Victory over Japan which signalled the end of the second World War - also known as VJ-80 day. This Friday on August 15th will be a moment to reflect on the sacrifice made and the lasting impact of the war. I spoke with John about why this anniversary still matters today and how it’s being commemorated.

    What's that new red and blue box outside ED?

    (0:51) Improvement lead Rick Strang, and our Chief Executive Steve Williamson spent time walking through our urgent and emergency care areas to take a look at how months of work by teams from across the hospital has significantly improved our ambulance handover time and allowed our teams to focus on the right patients, in the right place, at the right time.(21:01) Colleagues on Eden ward have made some improvements to their ward that have helped patients spend less time in hospital and improved staff morale. Ward Sister Lisa Jeffrey will be talking us through those changes.(23:18) And a new blue and red box has appeared outside the emergency department, we catch up with our Head of Emergency Preparedness Resilience and Response, Matt Overton, to find out what it is.

    Significant reductions in ambulance waiting times

    (0:23) This summer, Breastfest is coming to Newquay which is a lively one day event dedicated to raising funds for cancer research at RCHT. The festival was inspired by Jemma Sleeman, a breast cancer patient currently participating in a clinical trial at RCHT who will be joining us to tell us all about it!  (7:46) Improvement lead, Rick Strang, takes us on a tour of the emergency department and tells us about some of the changes made to urgent and emergency care that are helping to significantly reduce ambulance waiting times and improve patient experience.

    Saving over £1 million through Robotic Process Automation

    Investment in Robotic Process Automation has saved over a £1 million across Royal Cornwall hospitals. We find out what Robotic Process Automation is and how it’s been able to save so much money across departments at RCHT.Our Sterile services department disinfects and sterilises 3.3 million pieces of equipment every year and after almost 40 years of operation, their facility at the back of the Royal Cornwall Hospital site being refurbished. We’ll be hearing all about the project and what the day to day work of sterile services team looks like.      Naomi and Simon from our IT team tell us about how over 300 WoWs or Workstations on Wheels are making a difference across our wards.

    Brand New Implant Changing Back Pain Treatment

    (0:32) We’ll be hearing about a new therapy that uses an implant placed in the muscles in the spin that’ll help reduce chronic lower back pain. (8:45) The chair of Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust will be joining us in the studio to talk about some of the topics discussed at our latest board meeting and what it was like for him to spend the evening with our emergency department team. (27:21) Cath Lab 1 has officially reopened at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. The newly refurbished facility was unveiled last week, marking the completion of a major upgrade.

    Matthew Clarke, Filipino Cultural Appreciation Month and Pride Month

    (0:35) Today, we're joined by Matthew Clarke, who will be sharing his personal journey with cancer and how he's been documenting his experience. He’s partnered with Cancer Support UK to raise awareness through different platforms, including a recent film he created and a podcast. We’ll be talking to him about the responses he's received, his motivation behind these projects, and what he has planned moving forward.(24:27) On 5 June, we launched Filipino Cultural Appreciation Month, celebrating Filipino heritage across RCHT and the NHS.  This week, nurse and pastor Tina Dano reflects on faith, diversity, and her NHS journey.     25 Years service, National Blood Week, and UV Decontamination

    (0:45) This week is National Blood Week – we’ll be hearing from Nesa from the blood transfusion service about a “know your blood type” event running in the new wellbeing hub today.(4:19) We recently celebrated 25 years of service with number of our colleagues from Royal Cornwall Hospital – we’ll be hearing from some of them about their roles when they started their careers and what’s changed over the past 25 years.(10:28) And our domestic services team are trialling a new machine that uses ultraviolet light to decontaminate rooms. We hear from Morwenna about how the new system works and the green potential of the new kit.

    Volunteer to Career and Our New Staff Wellbeing Hub

    For volunteer's week this year the theme is ‘Volunteer to Career.’ We’ve spoken with a number of volunteers across our hospital, some who previously worked here and now volunteer, and others who started as volunteers and went on to build careers in healthcare. Angela, Kirsten, Daniel and Tabi are four of our volunteers who are about to share their stories and what volunteering here at the hospital means to them.On Monday, 2 June, we opened our new staff wellbeing hub at the front of Trelawny wing. Director of Nursing Berni George was there to cut the ribon. We also hear from Lee Wheston, manager of Anytime Fitness in Truro, about how they're supporting our staff to improve their health and wellbeing.And to mark the opening of the new Wellbeing Hub in the Trelawney Wing, Charlie caught up with a few RCHT team members who recently had their check-ups to find out what motivated them to take part and how the experience has benefited them.

    Decaf Drinks and Digital Patient Ordering system

    Patient Flow, Cancer Support and Celebrating Midwifery

    (1:15) Health and care providers across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are launching a focused two-week effort to improve patient flow. Our therapy teams are leading the way—making the most of their skills and empowering colleagues to keep patients active during their stay.     Get set for Easter & 30 years as a voice cabling specialist
