Joshua Hunter reviews MaXXXine, writer-director Ti West's blood-soaked conclusion to his X trilogy, starring Mia Goth as Maxine Minx, the sole survivor of X's massacre, now chasing stardom in a sleazy 1985 Hollywood. As Maxine finally gets her big break in the adult film industry, a mysterious killer known as the Night Stalker starts picking off aspiring starlets across the city — and Maxine's dark past threatens to catch up with her.   Joshua breaks down whether this 1980s-set finale (backed by a stacked cast including Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki, and Halsey) sticks the landing after X and Pearl, and gives his honest verdict on whether Goth's trilogy-closing performance earns all the hype. 🍍 The Reel Pineapple is your one-stop shop for honest movie reviews, trailer breakdowns, and unfiltered film talk — no hype, no gatekeeping, just reel takes from someone who actually loves this stuff. 📺 Subscribe on YouTube: youtube.com/thereelpineapple 🦋 Follow on BlueSky: reelpineapple.bsky.social 🎥 Follow on TikTok & Instagram: @jhunterreelpineapple 🎬 Follow on Letterboxd: BlackShazam 🎮 Catch me live on Twitch: twitch.tv/thereelpineapple ⭐ Love the show? Joshua Hunter reviews The Substance, Coralie Fargeat's Cannes sensation starring Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading Hollywood star fired from her fitness show on her 50th birthday, who turns to a black-market drug promising a younger, more beautiful version of herself — Sue, played by Margaret Qualley. The catch: they share one consciousness and must alternate control every seven days, no exceptions; so c'mon how could this possibly go badly? Joshua breaks down whether Fargeat's ruthless satire on toxic beauty standards and aging in Hollywood earns its Golden Globe-winning acclaim, digs into Moore's potential career-best performance, and gives his verdict on whether the film's escalating body horror pays off — or goes too far past the point of no return. Joshua Hunter reviews Mimics, director Kristoffer Polaha's horror-comedy about Sam Reinhold, a down-on-his-luck impressionist who makes a pact with Fergus — a wicked, strings-attached puppet promising him a shot at the big time. Joshua breaks down whether this creepy-but-charming genre mashup of comedy, romance, & light horror earns its Friday the 13th release date, digs into Polaha's dual role as director and lead, and gives his honest take on whether Fergus is able to conjure up some scares, or gets lost in the shuffle. This is it — the first episode in the annual Reel Spooky Series! Joshua Hunter kicks things off with Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, the Oscar-winning director's long-awaited adaptation of Mary Shelley's Gothic classic, starring Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his tragic creature. Joshua breaks down whether del Toro's signature dark, ornate style brings something genuinely new to a story that's been adapted hundreds of times, digs into Elordi's transformation into the Creature, and why it maybe the performance of his career, and gives his honest verdict on whether this one earns its place among del Toro's best work — or gets buried under its own gothic aspirations. Grab your candy, dim the lights, grab your Pumpkin Spice Drink(I might judge you in silence) and settle in — the ghouls are out & the annual Reel Spooky Season has officially risen from the dead. 🕯️🦇 One monster down, plenty more nightmares to go before Halloween. Joshua Hunter reviews Batman: Caped Crusader Season 1, the film noir-inspired reimagining of the Dark Knight from Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves. Set in a 1940s-style Gotham, the series follows a young Bruce Wayne (voiced by Hamish Linklater) in the early days of his crusade against a corrupt city, facing reimagined versions of classic villains including The Penguin, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Two-Face. Joshua breaks down whether this spiritual successor to Batman: The Animated Series recaptures that same magic, digs into the show's darker, more mature tone and stacked voice cast, and gives his honest verdict on whether this is the best animated Batman since Timm's original run — or just riding on nostalgia. Joshua Hunter reviews Dìdi, Sean Wang's semi-autobiographical directorial debut about Chris "Didi" Wang, a 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy growing up in Fremont, California during the summer of 2008 — caught between his family's traditions at home and the skate parks, friend group drama, and first crushes of the world outside. Starring Izaac Wang and Joan Chen, the film premiered at Sundance to a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and an Audience Award win. Joshua breaks down whether the film's specific, deeply personal look at identity and immigrant family life resonates universally, digs into the standout performances from Wang and Chen, & gives his verdict on whether this indie darling is deserving of all of its praise. Joshua Hunter reviews Problemista, Julio Torres' surrealist comedy and feature directorial debut, in which he stars as Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to bring his strange, imaginative ideas to life in the Big Apple. With his work visa running out, a job assisting an erratic art-world outcast (Tilda Swinton) becomes his only shot at staying in the country. Joshua breaks down whether Torres' off-kilter comedic voice and dreamlike take on the U.S. hits as intended, digs into Swinton's chaotic performance(which is maybe a career highlight), and gives his honest verdict on this A24 indie darling that flew under a lot of people's radar despite an insanely stacked cast including RZA, Greta Lee, and Isabella Rossellini as narrator. Joshua Hunter takes on Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Again?, the Netflix threequel that reunites the original couples 16 years later for a wedding — with Taraji P. Henson joining the cast and bringing a secret of her own. Joshua breaks down whether this franchise still has anything new to say almost two decades in, or if the drama's gotten a little too familiar, or if this is just another piece of garbage to throw on the trash pile of other Tyler Perry offerings. Joshua Hunter reviews Maddie's Secret, John Early's acclaimed directorial debut, starring himself as a dishwasher-turned-viral food influencer whose picture-perfect public life hides a private struggle. Joshua breaks down whether Early's bold, satirical swings behind and in front of the camera earn the festival buzz this one's been generating, and gives his honest verdict on whether this indie darling lives up to the hype. Joshua Hunter reviews Busboys, the self-financed comedy from David Spade and Theo Von, who co-wrote, produced, and star as two down-on-their-luck friends convinced that becoming waiters will solve all their problems. Joined by a chaotic supporting cast including Tim Dillon, Bobby Lee, and Chris Elliott, the film leans hard into raunchy, low-brow comedy — & Joshua breaks down whether that gamble actually pays off. Joshua Hunter reviews The Runner, Kevin Macdonald's Amazon Prime psychological thriller starring Gal Gadot as a high-powered London attorney forced into a citywide sprint after a mysterious caller (Damian Lewis) kidnaps her son and demands she follow a series of increasingly ruthless commands. Critics have been brutal, calling it everything from "boneheaded" to an "unintentional comedy" — so Joshua puts it to the test. Joshua Hunter takes a trip back to the year 1996 for a review of James and the Giant Peach, Henry Selick's part-live-action, part-stop-motion adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved novel, produced by Tim Burton. The film follows orphaned James Henry Trotter as he escapes his cruel aunts and sets off on a fantastical journey to New York City inside a giant, magically animated peach, alongside a cast of oversized insect companions voiced by Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon, and Simon Callow. Joshua breaks down why the film's stop-motion visuals and offbeat storytelling still hold up nearly three decades later, digs into Randy Newman's score(how did I not know this was his score?), and gives his honest verdict on whether this one deserves its status as a certified-fresh family classic — or if it's aged like a rotten peach. Joshua Hunter reviews Late Bloomers, Lisa Steen's comedy-drama about Louise, an aimless 28-year-old Brooklyn musician whose reckless stumble lands her in physical therapy alongside Antonina, a cantankerous elderly Polish woman who speaks no English. No sugarcoating — Joshua gives it to you straight: is Karen Gillan's performance strong enough to carry a script that leans hard on familiar tropes, or does this one collapse under its own sentimentality? Is this the worst thing Ashton Kutcher has ever starred in? Shockingly, the answer might be yes. Joshua Hunter revisits Killers, the 2010 action-comedy where Kutcher and Katherine Heigl play newlyweds whose marriage gets upended when it turns out he's a retired assassin with a target on his back. Joshua doesn't hold back — breaking down how flat and checked-out Kutcher's performance feels throughout, from the action beats (including a horrible fight against Rob Riggle) to the comedic timing, and why his chemistry with Heigl is shockingly absent in every way it needs to be to make this film work. Joshua gives his honest verdict: is this a fun, trashy watch worth revisiting, or a movie that should stay buried in the past where it belongs? Joshua Hunter reviews Queen of the Ring, Ash Avildsen's biopic about Mildred Burke, the pioneering wrestler who broke into a sport banned for women across most of America and became the first million-dollar female athlete in history. Emily Bett Rickards leads the ensemble as Burke, with Josh Lucas playing her husband, promoter, & abuser Billy Wolfe, with fan favorite Walton Goggins rounding out the cast as promoter Jack Pfefer. Joshua breaks down whether the film's true story and physical performances earn its "inspiring underdog biopic" label, digs into Rickards' lead performance, & gives his honest verdict on whether this one rises above the standard biopic playbook or gets pinned for the three count by the format. Joshua breaks down whether the film's gonzo, genre-blending chaos earns the comparisons to Ready or Not, digs into Beetz's go-for-broke performance, and unpacks the stacked supporting cast including Heather Graham, Patricia Arquette, and Tom Felton. He gives his honest verdict on whether the movie's midnight-movie energy holds up once the initial grindhouse thrills wear off, or if the films multiple plot points drag it down. Apparently Superman is "woke" god did I mention I hate people? The Man of Steel is back, in his first solo outing since my best friend Zack Snyder's 2013's Man of Steel; with David Corenswet this time playing the Man of Steel, Nicholas Hoult playing Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan playing Lois Lane, and Krypto the dog all showing up for this latest iteration of Superman.   Can #JimmyOlsenRizz save this movie, or is this the movie that Snyderverse stans are hoping it is?   Listen and find out!   The Reel Pineapple is your one-stop shop for the latest movie reviews, trailer breakdowns, and more! I will say one thing for this movie, really makes honeymoons seem like they suck. In the feature written and directed by G.G. Hawkins, we follow Teresa & Drew on their honeymoon, where they encounter Paz; and to say that things get a tad complicated is really underselling it. Awards season is ramping up, so expect a lot more content over the next couple months, with that said I'm kicking the season off with a very controversial film from A24. Did you know that there's a town in Oregon that turns into Halloween Town every October? Yeah, me neither. I checked out this documentary about the town of  St. Helen's Oregon, where the town brings in nearly 60,000 people each year for their Halloween Town celebration. Is the town haunted? Is it cursed? Is there a Karen who absolutely hates this celebration and wants it to stop?  Check out my review of The Spirit of Halloween Town!  Richard Linklater directed one of my favorite films of 2024 in the Glen Powell banger "Hitman". Can Linklater keep that streak going in 2025? Perhaps..... Ethan Hawke stars as the legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart, who is getting feeling sorry for himself, as he faces a future without Richard Rodgers; at the opening night of Rodgers latest offering in "Oklahoma."  Is this deserving of all of the critical praise it's receiving?
