    What is the Bible?

Full ServiceScripture:2 Kings 22:3-20; 2 Timothy 3:10-4:8Note: This week we will have a remembrance of baptism instead of celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Communion will be on July 20th this month.Sermon NotesThis week we start the Summer Sermon Series, ‘How to Read the Bible’ based on the Bible Project series by the same name. Our Bible is a library of writings that were written, collected, and edited over a thousand years. The Hebrew Scriptures (a.k.a Old Testament) bears witness to the interaction between the ancient nations of Israel and Judah, and their God. The Christian scriptures (a.k.a New Testament) bears witness to the community of those who believed that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah promised in the Hebrew scriptures and the savior for all people.I chose the two scriptures for this week to inform us about the internal understanding of the scriptures. The first is an account of the court of King Josiah of Judah who ‘discovers’ the Law (Torah) in the Jerusalem Temple. This is likely in reference to the first written version of the Torah that we would recognize as a part of the Hebrew scriptures. The second is a reference to the ‘scriptures’ and their use within the Christian scriptures. The author is most likely referring to the Hebrew scriptures here, but also references the gospel reference which is being developed. If you would like to explore this topic more (before or after the sermon), please see the following notes:Intro to the Bible 1- “What is the Bible?”* Main Page: https://bibleproject.com/explore/video/what-is-bible/* YouTube Link: * Study Guide: https://d1bsmz3sdihplr.cloudfront.net/media/Study%20Notes/HowToReadTheBible.pdfDiscussion Questions (Adults):* Why did God choose to reveal God’s self through the history, struggles, and meditations of one particular people situated in one particular corner of the earth?* How do the diverse genres of poetry, letters, law texts, and wisdom writings complement the narrative texts and thus contribute to our overall understanding of the overarching story? Why the diversity of genres?* What is the value in God revealing God’s self through texts spread out over 1000 years and written by different authors?* What are the advantages or pitfalls to different Christian traditions including different lists of writings into the Bible?* Does this story continue in Christian believers today? If so, how? If not, what is fundamentally different between the story of the Bible and the story of the Church as lived out today?Discussion Questions (Youth):* Why did God choose to reveal God’s self through the history, struggles, and meditations of one particular people?* How do the various types of writings in the Bible contribute to an understanding of the overall story of the Bible?* What is the value of God revealing God’s self over 1000 years and through multiple different authors?* Does this story continue in Christian believers today? If so, how? If not, what is fundamentally different between the story of the Bible and the story of the Church as lived out today?Discussion Questions (Elementary Youth):* Why do you think God chose to show us who God is through the stories and writings of one family of people?* How many kinds of writing or story telling can you think of? Why did God use different kinds of writings in the Bible?* Why do you think that God used many different people to write over a long time?* Does God’s story continue today?Extra Study/Credit* Bible Project Podcast: https://bibleproject.com/podcast/series/how-to-read-the-bible-series/* Episode 1: The Bible as Literary Art* Episode 2: What’s In Your BibleNotes from AJ:* The Bible project is a definitively protestant and Christian organization, and as such, has a specific perspective that they see this from. Their mission is to “help people experience the Bible as a unified story that leads to Jesus.” This is also our perspective. However, that being said, a few things to be aware of:* Old Testament/New Testament: There has been some pushback in academic circles over using the phrase ‘Old Testament’. Specifically hearing from both our Jewish siblings and those in the Church that the title implies that these writings are outdated, and have been replaced by a newer and better Testament. Even Jesus said that he did not come to replace the Law, but to fill it in more (Matthew 5:17). “Hebrew Scriptures” and “Christian Scriptures” may be more appropriate. We also should acknowledge that the ordering of the books in our Hebrew Scriptures differs in several notable places from its historical order in the Jewish Tanakh (as well as continued order for our Jewish siblings).* Old Testament ‘Just Ends’: In the video there is a statement that the Hebrew Scriptures are an “expertly crafted literary work that just end”s. This makes sense from their perspective, but is a bit problematic from an interfaith perspective. Is there an unfulfilled hope for a future Messiah (anointed one) and son of David (future King)? Yes, but our Jewish siblings would not say that their Scriptures ‘just end’ anymore than we would. Arguably, the Christian scriptures also ‘just end’ with the early church expecting the imminent return of Christ. This is a public episode. Household of God

Special Music “Jesus, Our Recreator” by Paul Demer, performed by AJ Ochart Sermon NotesHouseholds in the ancient world were highly structured organizations with very clear rules and roles. This was the case for individual households as well as larger organizations of households in clans or tribes.Being a part of a particular house or clan was a big deal. It gave identity, belonging, and a certain amount of authority. One’s role within the household or clan also had great significance in what one could do (or not do), how they were to act, who they could talk with, and what inheritance would be granted. There were distinct differences between children and adults, enslaved persons and free persons, daughters and sons, and even firstborn sons and any others.Children from birth to weaning, at age 3 or 4, were under the authority of their mother or nursemaid (depending on the family’s class). Gender was unimportant at this age (the Greek word for ‘child’ (teknon) is neuter). After that, especially in well-to-do households, the children would be given over to the authority of a Tutor or Disciplinarian. This would be a teacher who would instruct the child in the basics of reading and math, and perhaps in more advanced subjects of writing, philosophy, rhetoric, etc. Aristotle served as such a person for Alexander the Great. Finally, around age 12 or 13, when the child became an adult (adolescence would not exist for another 1800 years), they would be passed on to their parent. Sons, especially the firstborn, became an apprentice to their father, and expected to learn the family business, which they would one day inherit. Other sons might be apprenticed out to another trade. Daughters would learn how to run a household of their own one day.As we continue to read the letter from Paul to the Galatian Christians, we find that he uses this commonly understood metaphor to explain the role of the law and of faith, and to help us understand our place in it.QuestionsHow do you understand the role of the law and that of faith? What has it meant to be a part of the household that you grew up in?What does it mean to be a part of the household of God? Struggles of Faith

Special Music “Abide with Me” performed by Kevin and Sandee Cribbs Sermon NotesLast week we heard from the book of Acts about the Council of Jerusalem, which gathered leaders of The Way in order to discern what to do about Torah observance (specifically circumcision) and the growing number of Gentile believers. According to Acts, Simon (a.k.a Peter, a.a.k.a. Cephas), James (brother of Jesus), Paul (a.k.a. Saul), Barnabas (a.k.a Joseph), and some other apostles and elders gathered to listen to what the Holy Spirit has been doing among the gentiles. The council sent an open letter to the Gentile believers saying,“it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose on you no further burden than these essentials: that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols and from blood and from what is strangled* and from fornication” (Acts 15:28-29)*this is the one that I forgot in my sermon.I noted in my sermon that this account and ‘essentials’ from Acts differs from the account from Paul’s letters. In Romans, and other places, he suggests that eating meat sacrificed to idols is no big deal, provided that your faith is strong enough, and you are not causing a sibling (whose faith may not be as strong) to stumble. In addition, the translation the Greek word pornia (usually translated ‘fornication’ or ‘sexual immorality’) is notoriously tricky. I imagine that if you asked different people in our congregation what it meant, you would get very different answers. From Paul’s letters it seems that he was far more concerned with exploitative sexual practices (using ‘inferior’ slaves, children, and temple prostitutes as ‘vessels’) than the things that modern Christian ‘purity culture’ would have us believe. Paul’s own account of this council, found in-between our readings today, says that the only ‘essential’ was to care for the poor. This week we begin to make our way through one of Paul’s letters, The Letter to the Galatians, where we will remain through Pentecost. Galatia (located in the highlands of Anatolia, modern day central Turkey) had been invaded by Gaelic Celts in the 3rd Century (which gave it it’s Greek name, meaning ‘land of the Gauls’) and was made a Roman Provence in 25 BCE. According to Acts, soon after the Council of Jerusalem, Paul and Silas established churches in there.Paul is now writing a letter to these churches because it seems that some from the ‘circumcision faction,’ who continue to insist that Gentile believers follow Torah, have come to preach a ‘new gospel’ to them. The Galatians have (foolishly) believed them, and Paul is writing to encourage them to believe in the gospel of the grace of Christ which he originally brought to them.In this week’s text, he relates his own journey of faith: from zealous persecutor of the church to apostle of Christ. He also talks about his calling out of Peter/Simon/Cephas when Peter buckled to the pressure of that same ‘circumcision faction.’ Paul continues to proclaim a righteousness that is outside of and beyond our human efforts, grace not works. As we continue in this letter, we will explore the radical gospel that Paul proclaims, one that tears down the dividing walls of good works, ethnicity, and even gender.QuestionsHow have you grown in your own faith, what obstacles have you overcome, what mistakes have you made? What do you do when you see yourself or others ‘falling back’ into old patterns? How can this story inform our current differences in theology and practice?
