Play-off Semis in the Balance
The play-offs are here and in this week's show Alex and Liam review both play off semi-final first legs. It was honours even as CD Castellon and Almeria drew 1-1, whilst Malaga won 0-1 in Las Palmas to take an advantage back to La Rosaleda. There is also good news from the 1RFEF play off semi-finals. Last week it looked like two B sides would be joining us next year, now there is just one B side in the four sides who have made the final. Part 2 of this week's show will be out on Thursday when the boys review the second legs. ===== Why wait until Thursday? MD42: Champions, play-off delight, despair & relegation woes: Part 2
In the final Jornada of the season we found out our champions, Racing Santander, as well as the four teams that would make the play offs (UD Almeria, Malaga CF, UD Las Palmas and CD Castellon), as well as the two who would miss out (Burgos CF and SD Eibar). We also had a relegation "play out" between Leganes and Mirandes that say Los Jabatos relegated to 1RFEF. In part one we cover the top end of the table, and part 2 covers the relegation game and the 1RFEF promotion playoffs. ===== Why wait until Thursday? All four of the play off places are still up for grabs with 6 teams chasing four places on the final day of the season. We cover Depor's promotion and the relegation of battle in part 1. MD40: Back Where they Belong Part 2
Racing Santander are back where they belong in Primera division, their victory, coupled with Almeria dropping points against Las Palmas confirms their automatic promotion. Depor also have one foot in Primera, needing just 3 points from the last 2 games to secure their place. The race for the playoffs is hotting up with dropped points for Castellon and Eibar, Burgos the big beneficiaries, whilst Malaga and Las Palmas both won to strengthen their play-off position. Down the bottom Cultural won to delay the inevitable relegation another week and Real Zaragoza lost again to drop to bottom of the table and are as good as down. It was late heartbreak again for Mirandes and the survival target edged a little higher as Cadiz picked up a point. We will cover the bottom end of the table in the part 2 of the show and the promotion chase in part 1. Why wait until Thursday for part 2? MD39: On the brink Part 2
This week in Segunda we have seen massive bans at Andorra including for owner Pique, the disgraceful vandalism of the homes of some Real Zaragoza players, the announcement of the departure of Sporting coach Borja Jimenez which has set the managerial merrygoround wheels in motion. Up the top, Racing have one foot in Primera and it is neck and neck between Depor and Almeria for the second automatic promotion place. It is a further 3 from 6 as it has become tighter than ever in the play-off race. Down the bottom, nobody picked up any points again and we could see our first relegations confirmed next week. MD38: By the Skin of their Teeth Part 2
This week saw a few clubs scraping through by the skin of their teeth. Top two chasers Racing and more so Depor won, but only just, Las Palmas stormed back into top two contention and there were points dropped in the top six race as Castellon lost, Burgos could only draw and Malaga beat Eibar in Ipurua. Down the bottom there was a relegation six pointer which ended in disappointment for both teams, and Granada dealt another blow to Real Zaragoza's survival hopes. In part one we cover the top end of the table, whilst in Thursday's part two we discuss the play-off chase and the relegation battle. Why wait until Thursday? MD37: Not Going Down Without a Fight Part 2
This week’s Jornada made international news as Andrada of Real Zaragoza suffered a total head loss and assaulted Jorge Pulido of Huesca at the end of a bad tempered derbi which Huesca won. At least we can say that Real Zaragoza aren't going down without a fight. The relegation picture changed drastically with victories for Mirandes and Real Valladolid. Up the top leaders Racing dropped points, there were two all top six matches, Malaga fell out of the playoffs and Eibar have climbed in. On any other week the headline would have been not one, not two, but THREE hat tricks this Jornada including a perfect hat trick, left foot right foot header from Eibar’s Jon Bautista. We will cover events in Huesca and the bottom end of the table in the first half of the show and the promotion chase in part 2. Why wait until Thursday for part 2? Nobody wants to stay up, Everyone wants to go up Part 2
LaLiga Hypermotion, the league where nobody wants to stay up and everyone wants to go up. This week we were treated to two all top six clashes, we have a team on the charge training to catch them, Andorra and Sporting not far behind either, Albacete won at home 4-1 with less than 30% possession, there were late goals to deny the teams down the bottom and those above the drop zone just don’t seem to want to get away. In part 1 we focus on the two big all top six clashes as well as the rest of the top six. MD32: Advantage Almeria: Part 2
For the second week running leaders Racing Santander lost, this time to relegation threatened Real Zaragoza. Almeria capitalised, brushing past Real Sociedad B but nobody else in the top six won. Burgos a major winner as they won their Derby against Real Valladolid and jumped in as a result. It went from bad to worse for Cultural Leonesa and Huesca whilst Pacheta’s Granada are making noises about the playoffs, they’ll have to get past Eibar and Ceuta first. In part 1 we will discuss the leader’s defeat, hope for Real Zaragoza, Almeria moving into the box seat and Burgos’ Derbi win. In Thursday’s part 2 we cover Eibar’s playoff charge, the teams up the top dropping points again, Andorra thrashing Cultural Leonesa and Granada thinking of the play offs. ----- Why wait until Thursday for part 2? MD29: Goals, Granada and Garitano Part 2
This week we had a 7-goal thriller, two 6 goal thrillers, a 4-0, the bottom side won, a coach was sacked and we have his replacement to talk about already, plus there was an unsavoury accusation of a racist remark made on the pitch. We will unpack all that on this week’s show! In part 1 we will discuss Garitano’s sacking, Sergio’s appointment, racing extending their lead, perhaps only temporarily, and of course the racism incident in Zubieta. In Thursday’s part 2 we will be focussing on Depor faltering under Hidalgo, Malaga giving away a two-goal lead against Real Valladolid, a dominant performance from Las Palmas and the Derbi de Burgos. Why wait until Thursday for part 2? Listen early and ad free for as little as 3 Euros a month on Patreon or sign up for our extra content tier to hear the second 45 of the show, FREE TRIAL FOR 7 DAYS and then from as little as 3 Euros per month (billed in your local currency). MD28: Blown Away Part 2
This week 2nd placed CD Castellon hosted a depleted leader in Racing Santander and found themselves blown away, 3-0 down at half time as Racing extended their lead at the top. Las Palmas were back to winning ways themselves blowing away Cultural Leonesa in Ruben de Barrera’s second dugout debut at the club. Ruben Selles got the sack at Real Zaragoza, there was an Andalusian derbi, drama in the Basque country and much much more. There were also tragic scenes as a medical emergency ended in the death of a Sporting fan at el Molinon. In part 1 we will be discussing the top of the table clash, the departure of Ruben Selles and why Cristiano Ronaldo might be listening to the show from here on in. In Thursday’s part 2 we will be focussing on the appointment of Ruben de la Barrera starting with disaster against Las Palmas, as well as both Ceuta and Depor winning. MD27: Time for a Change Part 2
This week, down the bottom Mirandes gave themselves a glimmer of hope as they climbed off bottom spot with a win over Huesca and Real Zaragoza finished yet another game with 10 as they lost to relegation rivals Andorra. Cuco Ziganda also got his marching orders at Cultural Leonesa where patience has run out and they felt it was time for a change. Fran Escriba got off to a good start at Real Valladolid with a point away to Sporting. At the top everyone in the top six won, apart from the leaders and their opponents Las Palmas who played out a dramatic draw where CD Castellon equalised with ten men in stoppage time. We will talk about the top six on part two of this week’s show. Why wait until Thursday for part 2? MD26: New Leaders Part 2
Racing Santander have spent 16 of the 26 match days this season So far as leader, but this week following their defeat to Eibar and Castellon’s victory of Depor, we have a new leader at the top of the division as Pablo Hernandez has taken Castellon from the relegation zone to top of that table in 21 games. Down the bottom there was a good win for Huesca and a point a piece for Mirandes, cultural and real Zaragoza which does little to help any of them. There was plenty of refereeing controversy once again this week and we also saw the departure of Luis Tevenet at Real Valladolid following their 5-1 defeat to Granada. In part 1 we focus on the action up the top, Racing Santander's defeat to Eibar and CD Castellon's win over Depor. In Thursday's part 2 we will be focussing on matters down the bottom of the table, the sacking of Luis Tevenet at Real Valladolid following their 5-1 defeat to Granada, the 0-0 draw between Cultural Leonesa & Real Zaragoza and the upturn in form of Huesca who beat Ceuta by 2-0. Golazos and Circling Wolves Part 2
This week, at the time of recording, Racing Santander, leaders at the beginning of the match day, have yet to play, but the wolves are circling. All of the top six have picked up points this weekend, with all but UD Las Palmas winning and as it stands we have new leaders, CD Castellon following their 4-0 demolition of Real Valladolid, where the wolves are also circling for those in charge of the club and Luis Tevenet. We will also bring you news of a historic first in Spanish professional football that took place this weekend in the game between Real Zaragoza and Eibar as well as discussing as many of the numerous golazos that we have seen in the 9 games played so far this weekend plus not one, not two but THREE Comunicados from teams against the refereeing this weekend. In Thursday’s part 2 we will be focussing on Depor’s controversial win over Albacete, Las Palmas losing more ground on the top 2 as they draw a blank vs Burgos, an Andaluce derbi as Cadiz take on Almeria and Liam and I rate our best Golazo from the match day as the worldies were flying in everywhere. One Step Forwards, Two Steps Back Part 2
This week saw Racing Santander revert to type, after beating Depor the week before they lost to a team in the relegation battle to give hope to the rest. Castellon, Depor, Almeria, Cordoba and Burgos closed the gap, so with Malaga still yet to play at the time of recording it was only Las Palmas in the top 8 who didn’t take full advantage, although they did edge slightly closer with a draw. Down the bottom it was a good week for Albacete, Eibar and Granada, all three of whom are on mini runs of their own and chat about the bottom half of the table will make up the content of part 2 of this week’s show. Breaking the deadlock Part 2
We were blessed this week with two all top six clashes, the demolition of Las Palmas in El Sardinero broke the deadlock at the top whilst simultaneously creating another deadlock between second and third as CD Castellon kept moving on up. Depor tasted victory for the first time since November in the other all top six clash. In part 2 we cover the Funes revolution at Malaga which continues as they broke into the top 6 following victory in Cordoba. They sit level on points with Burgos who beat Huesca in the rain to put Jon Bolo under pressure in El Alcoraz which is the second talking point of part 2 of the show. Snow, a Sacking and a Winless Top 6: Part 2
Nobody up the top seems to want to go up, not one of the teams in the top six at the start of the Jornada won this weekend. We also saw some serious snow and a plea from Pique in Andorra, yet another sacking in the division - the 12th of the season so far, Malaga continue their march up the table, Leganes win and score 3 for the second week in a row, captain, talisman and one of the longest serving players in Segunda division announces he is leaving his club much to the fan’s disgust and two teams return to their rightful homes. Late Festive Gifts Part 2
This week was another bad one for teams at the top, unless you play in yellow, that is, with three of the top four dropping points and the leaders Racing Santander having their lead at the top cut from 4 to 3 points. The queue to join the party is closer than ever with just 3 points now separating 3rd position and 9th position in the division. There were late festive gifts, with 6 of the games being decided in the last 15 minutes including 3 games being decided after the 88th minute. Meanwhile it was a fantastic week for Segunda sides in the Copa with 5 through to the next round and Granada still to play in the new year. We are making the commitment to giving the gift of talking about all 11 games across our two main shows this week. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
