What Does Music Mean To A Generation That's Never Bought An Album?

Most students today have never bought an album in their life. Instead, they press play and music appears out of thin air. It just exists. And that one simple shift in how music is experienced has created a gap in understanding that every music teacher needs to know about. In today's episode, I explore why music teachers are uniquely placed to have one of the most important conversations happening in schools right now, and it starts with one simple question you can ask your class today. In this episode I talk about:The "record store" moment that explains everything about how this gap happened. The YouTube video that gets taken down and why the child had no idea why.The school concert, the upload, and the letters that can follow. The one simple question that opens the whole conversation with any class. Why music teachers and not just lawyers or tech experts, are exactly the right people to have this conversation. And finally, what happens when students truly understand that music is made by real people who deserve to be valued for their work, and how that changes everything about how they listen, create, and engage with music. The Spark for Music Teachers is ten minutes of mindset and energy designed especially for anyone teaching music in schools. The Belief that's Costing Most Music Teachers their Weekends (and how the best ones let it go)

Most music teachers I know all do this one thing, and most people assume it means the opposite of what it does.I've spent over twenty years working alongside music teachers. I've watched the ones who burn out and the ones who don't. I've seen who thrives and who spends every Sunday night dreading Monday morning. For a long time I thought I understood why. Then I looked at the data from our own teacher community, and honestly? It surprised me.The teachers who had finally found their rhythm? Who weren't exhausted by the planning, who weren't drowning in preparation, who were actually present in their classrooms instead of just surviving them? They weren't the ones who had figured out how to do everything themselves. They were the ones who had finally stopped trying to.In this episode I'm sharing what I discovered, and the belief that so many experienced teachers are quietly carrying that is costing them their weekends, their energy, and their joy. This is for you if you've been teaching long enough to know better, but somehow still feel like you should be doing more. This is for you if the word 'shortcut' makes you feel a little guilty. What the best teachers in our community know might just change everything about how you spend your time from here.Click play now to find out what they know.________________________________________Teaching music isn't about luck — it's about making deliberate decisions about where your time, energy and expertise actually go.This podcast will give you the mindset shifts and real-world insights that the most experienced, sustainable music teachers use to protect their wellbeing and show up fully for their students.Listen now to discover the one belief that might be costing you more than you realise — and how to let it go.________________________________________If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a five-star rating and review on iTunes, subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, and share it with a colleague who needs to hear this one.Additional Resources:Get a FREE sample of the Fun Music Company K-6 curriculum mentioned in this podcast here: funmusicco.com/primary-school-music-curriculum-resources-sample/Get the full K-6 Fun Music programs here: https://funmusicco.comGet my weekly emails and free resources here: https://funmusicco.com/music-teaching-resources-archive/Tweet Me! @funmusiccoJoin me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/funmusiccoEnjoy — and let me know your thoughts! The Spark for Music Teachers is ten minutes of mindset and energy designed especially for anyone teaching music. The Tools You Already Have (But Don't Know About Yet)

A little while ago, I took a short online course in something I thought I already knew pretty well. What I didn't know was that what I discovered in that course would completely change the way I work — and make me realise how much time I'd been quietly wasting without even knowing it.And then something happened at a recent event we held for our curriculum members that hit me with exactly the same feeling! It made me ask myself a question I want to ask you today:What do you already have… that you don't yet know about? In this episode I share a few stories — some funny, some a little humbling — and a gentle challenge that might just free up more of your most precious resource…TIMEThis one's a quick listen. But I have a feeling it'll stay with you._______________________________________________________🎧 Listen now — and then come and tell me what you discovered that was hiding in plain sight. And if you know a music teacher who's struggling right now — please feel free to pass this on to them. What Does a Good K–6 Music Curriculum Actually Look Like? 3 Things Most Get Wrong

Opening a government lesson resource is the most brutal confidence hit you didn't ask for, and I'm not even talking about the 160 pages.I'm talking about the version of yourself that starts to believe the lie: the teacher who thinks she's not good enough, the teacher who apologises for not being a music specialist, that part of you who thinks if you just work harder and read more documents, you'll finally feel prepared.I've watched teachers get handed music on top of everything else. I've witnessed the "just make it work" culture get normalised. I've opened resources expecting answers, only to discover they were designed for a version of me that doesn't exist. Here's what I know after thirty years in and around music education: teaching music is not just about delivering content. It's about becoming someone who can stand in front of kids and lead them to learning something incredible. And for teachers especially — already stretched thin, already doubting themselves — this journey shouldn't require you to sacrifice your mental health, your evenings, or your belief that you're capable. This isn't about one document. It's about what happens when the tools you're given expect you to teach in a way that just doesn’t work in a classroom. It's about the teacher who stays up late trying to decode jargon. The one who feels guilty for not understanding. The one who blames themselves when it's the document that failed them.If you've ever opened something that was supposed to help you and you felt your stomach drop, if you're teaching music without being a musician, or if you're just tired of resources that make you feel small — this one's for you! Listen to this episode now on The Spark for Music Teachers._________________________________________If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a five-star rating and review on iTunes, subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, and invite your friends and colleagues to join us. Additional Resources: Get my FREE grade specific K-6 music lesson sample pack here: https://funmusicco.com/primary-school-music-curriculum-resources-sample/Get the full K-6 Fun Music programs here: https://funmusicco.comTweet Me! @funmusiccoJoin me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/funmusiccoEnjoy & Let me know your thoughts! The spark for music teachers is ten minutes of mindset and energy designed especially for anyone teaching music. How to Reclaim the Joy in Music Teaching (even when nobody seems to care)

"Feeling so defeated. The kids have been completely wild and out of control lately. The Pop Culture Problem Sabotaging Music Classes—And How to Fix It

Have you ever wondered why students can't seem to tell the difference between a beat, rhythm or track anymore? We've all been there—asking students to "clap along with the beat" and watching them look completely lost. It's frustrating, it's discouraging, and it can make you question your own teaching abilities. But what if the problem isn't your teaching at all? Here's what's really happening: Pop culture is hijacking the word "beat," and even government education departments are promoting programs such as "Beat Lab" in schools. When the people creating educational policy don't understand basic musical terminology correctly, how can we expect our students to?In this episode, I'm breaking down how one simple language shift can transform your entire classroom dynamic. You'll discover the exact words that turn student resistance into enthusiasm, how to make corrections feel like insider secrets instead of criticism, and why students naturally show more respect when you speak to them like professional musicians.Whether you're a new teacher struggling with terminology confusion or a veteran looking to refine your approach, I want to help you save time, energy, and a whole lot of frustration. When you get this right, you're not just teaching music—you're giving your students a skill they'll use for life. Ready? Great! The Hidden Music Teaching Challenge Most Teachers Face—And How to Transform It in One Class

What if I told you that the real reason your music classes feel like chaos isn't because you need better lesson plans—but because you're missing the ONE critical step that happens before any real learning can take place? You might have the most beautifully crafted activities and expensive instruments, but if students aren't prepared for what you're about to teach them, no amount of fancy resources will fix that classroom resistance. That's exactly why I'm so excited for you to hear today's episode—because I'm exposing the barrier that could be sabotaging your classes and revealing the simple shift that makes students who used to groan "Do we have to?"now show up asking "What amazing thing are we doing today?"In this episode, I'm sharing the exact moment I went from making this critical error (and nearly losing my love for teaching music) to discovering the principle that transforms any classroom. We're unpacking why your current approach might be creating resistance instead of enthusiasm, and the secret behind lessons that don't just deliver content but actually transform kids into lifelong musicians. This isn't another "tips and tricks" episode—this is me sharing the most vulnerable moment of my teaching career and the breakthrough discovery that my musician husband helped me see about the walls I was unknowingly building. And if you're tired of fighting for your students' attention and feeling “push back” or resistance every single lesson, I invite you to test this ONE simple shift before your next music class. The change is so dramatic that within minutes, you'll see kids who were previously tuned out suddenly leaning in and asking for more!..When your principal walks by and stops to ask "What are you doing differently?",  you'll know exactly what transformed your classroom. Email me at [email protected] with your "This completely transformed my classroom!" story because I live for these moments! Your breakthrough is just 10 minutes away as you listen to this— don't let another day go by struggling when the solution is right here. ________________________________________Teaching Music isn’t about luck —it’s about taking specific, deliberate actions and steps and practicing these with daily commitment. This podcast will give you the steps and approaches that the most successful teachers, coaches and top performers use.Listen now to learn how to transform your teaching and achieve the goals you’ve always dreamed of. _________________________________________If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a five-star rating and review on iTunes, subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, and invite your friends and colleagues to join us. Additional Resources: Get the full K-6 Fun Music programs here: https://funmusicco.comGet my weekly emails and free resources here: https://funmusicco.com/music-teaching-resources-archive/Tweet Me! @funmusiccoJoin me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/funmusiccoEnjoy & Let me know your thoughts! The spark for music teachers is ten minutes of mindset and energy designed especially for anyone teaching music. The Sneaky Assumptions We Don’t Even Notice

Have you ever heard this quote supposedly said about the invention of the telephone?“This thing is unnecessary, it’s intrusive, and frankly, we have better ways of communication!”Sounds ridiculous now, right? But at the time, it reflected a real hesitation—people assumed something new meant something bad. That it would replace connection, not enhance it. And yet, here we are: the telephone didn’t stop creativity or skill—it freed people to focus better on communications. When Alexander Graham Bell made the first voice call, he didn’t see a threat. Instead, he saw potential saying:“I feel I have at last struck the solution of a great problem... The day is coming when wires will be laid to houses just like water or gas—and friends converse with each other without leaving home.”He wasn’t wrong.Today, we treat the telephone as a basic utility. It became a tool so seamlessly integrated into our lives that we forget how disruptive it once seemed. And that’s exactly the kind of sneaky assumption we’re talking about in this episode … especially assumptions called: “presuppositions”.When it comes to music teaching—whether you’re an experienced educator or completely new to the field—there are plenty of assumptions, presuppositions and inherited skepticism, especially around tools, or so-called “scripted curriculum.” But what if those assumptions are holding you back? What if using time-saving tools and structured support actually opens up MORE space for creativity and better classroom communications and rapport, not less?In this episode of The Spark, we’re unpacking those sneaky presuppositions that get in our way—especially when we don’t even realise they’re there until we look more carefully.🎧 Click play, and let’s take one more step together towards getting you the confident, creative, and impactful music lessons you deserve! _________________________________________If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a five-star rating and review on iTunes, subscribe wherever you listen to your podcasts, and invite your friends and colleagues to join us. Why intentional listening matters (and is making a difference) for today's post-covid generation.

Guess what?! One of your most valuable teaching activities that is making a difference for today's post-covid generation … is INTENTIONAL LISTENING.Intentional listening enables children to sit, focus, and truly absorb what's being shared! Think about it- Right now, we're seeing a generation of children who have been through something no other generation in recent history has experienced. These post-COVID kids have spent years behind screens, with masks, and in isolation. And now that we're back in classrooms, many teachers are telling me the same thing: "These kids just don't know how to listen anymore!"Now, you might be thinking, “Of course we do listening activities in music class!" …But what I'm talking about here goes beyond the usual "listen and identify" exercises (though those are always a great starting point) . So if you’re ready to step up your teaching level in this area, this episode is for you! And—just a heads-up—about halfway through, I share my own personal story about its true power that reached me beyond the classroom, and let me tell you, it’s such a powerful testament to the importance of connections made by teaching this curriculum component in music class. Additional Resources: Get my FREE music teaching listening resource mentioned here: https://funmusicco.com/listeningGet the full K-6 Fun Music programs here: https://funmusicco.comGet my weekly emails and free resources here: https://funmusicco.com/music-teaching-resources-archive/Tweet Me! @funmusiccoJoin me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/funmusiccoEnjoy & Let me know your thoughts! The spark for music teachers is ten minutes of mindset and energy designed especially for anyone teaching music. Feeling unsupported? Here’s how to let go of destructive criticisms.

Most music teachers struggle to feel fully supported by their school administration and fellow colleagues, students and parents because of everyday things that are said including feedback, judgements and criticisms. This leaves them feeling like music isn’t given enough priority amongst other teachers and in the school curriculum. In this episode, I break down exactly how to let go of destructive judgments and criticisms. If you feel like you’re constantly under the spotlight with criticism, and this stops you from making positive daily progress in your teaching, this episode is what you need. Key highlights include: The secret to becoming criticism-proof, and letting criticism and judgement fall right off your back~ Most music teachers are experts at fitting a LOT into their schedules, but struggle and eventually burn-out when unforeseen challenges come up such as compounding criticism from other teachers.   Why learning about beliefs is everything! – because often it's not just the thing that happens, or what someone says that is the most destructive.  How to instantly dissolve negative, disempowering beliefs and embed new positive ones inside of you! The problem is that we’re not always aware of our beliefs and the meaning they can create. Yet, these are the two main things that can hold us back and keep us from being an AWESOME music teacher. That’s why in this episode of the Spark for Music Teachers podcast we’re talking about how your beliefs will determine everything you do, feel and have and how to implement a simple but powerful “self-talk” tool to give you the EDGE in your music teaching this year! ________________________________________Teaching Music isn’t about luck —it’s about taking specific, deliberate actions and steps and practicing these with daily commitment. This podcast will give you the steps and approaches that the most successful teachers, coaches and top performers use.Listen now to learn how to transform your music teaching and achieve all the goals you’ve always dreamed of. Why waiting for a “free lunch” is a waste of time

We’ve all heard the saying: “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” But how often do we take that advice to heart?  Today’s episode is a little different—and really special—because I’m taking you on an “inside out” journey of the Fun Music Curriculum by exploring this story. The everyday self-talk every music teacher should be using!

We all know we need to take care of ourselves to be the best teacher, colleague, spouse, parent, and person we can be. This includes taking care of both physical and mental well-being.  What I wasn’t aware of until recently was how impactful it is to take everyday language and intentionally use it to empower and impact ourselves (and others) for the better.  Often, particularly as teachers, we’re so busy! We don’t take the time out to stop and ask ourselves a simple question and actually care about the response we give back… but we really should! We’re teachers. We’re leaders. We have to get up in front of our classes everyday and lead them to greatness. We can’t do that if we don’t take this little bit of time to feel great ourselves.  Author Patricia Ireland once said  “I don't think you lead by pessimism and cynicism. I think you lead by optimism and enthusiasm and energy.” That is what we’re about here at the Fun Music Company. I want to make it my mission to really help teachers, and help them have the three keys of optimism, enthusiasm.. and energy they need to have a fantastic time teaching. And it’s that notion of these three keys that sparked the need for our newest K-6 Curriculum v2.0 update to include 280 done-for-you lessons. You’ll find all the details to it here: https://funmusicco.com/fun-music-company-music-curriculum/ If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a five-star rating and review on iTunes, subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts, and invite your friends and colleagues to join us.  Get the full K-6 Fun Music programs here: https://funmusicco.com Get my weekly emails and free resources here: https://funmusicco.com/resource-archive/ Tweet Me! @funmusicco Join me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/funmusicco Enjoy & Let me know your thoughts!

Cracking the “Code” on how to produce exponential results in music

We’ve all heard the saying, “use it or lose it,” especially when it comes to learning and teaching.  And you know what they say?!?… If you want to succeed with teaching music, you need more variety, more skills, more time, more ideas, more lessons, more personality, more qualifications, more training, more instruments, more services, more youtube videos, more information, more money, more meetings, more admin, more prep, more concerts …. more, more, more!  But what if I told you that these widely held beliefs might be misguided? What if, in fact, the key to growth, success, learning, results and personal fulfilment in music teaching doesn't just lie in piling more of everything on everyday?  Today I’m going to share a new perspective from the ‘talent code’ mentality that unexpectedly infiltrated my life over the past 20+ years in music teaching and publishing. What I’ve noticed is that there is  a compounding nature to learning music, associated with exposure and consistency. … and it starts when you slow things down into a learning zone called deep practice.  Today, I’m going to introduce you to the mindset and science that happens when you allow ONE small yet simple, carefully crafted musical skill to build upon another with no gaps or interruptions in between, and how it produces exponential results quickly and with less effort.  Are you ready to challenge the notion that more of everything is always better?  If you are, then let's dive into this exploration of WHY and then HOW this phenomenon of exponential learning works. Sometimes, small yet consistent and simple, focused steps are the keys to reaching your music teaching goals. Stick around, because by the end of this episode, you might just find yourself questioning your own approach to teaching and life! What music teachers can learn from comedians in cars!

A few days ago, I stumbled into a show called comedians in cars getting coffee. It didn’t take long while watching it to realize that even though comedians look effortless on stage, they actually have to work really hard behind the scenes to come up with new material that people will laugh at! What I didn’t know was that there is a specific process comedians use to get the best jokes and materials to their audiences via testing. While music teaching isn’t quite like a comedian's performance where every component needs to be original and funny, in music teaching we can “stand on the shoulders of giants'  while incorporating the comedians process. And that's also what sparked our newest free resource called “Music Teachers Secrets” which includes the top nine active ideas for music teachers for you to use in ANY classroom. 53: What do you really need to upgrade your music curriculum? The gifts and challenges

There’s no doubt about it.. These are changing times! And music curricula are changing. Here’s the thing: creating an upgraded music curriculum can be incredibly confusing and frustrating So it’s no wonder you might  feel overwhelmed and overworked just thinking about curriculum and how to implement it into the classroom! So today I thought I’d share with you some insights which were gained from our work here at the Fun Music Company as we analyse and look at all the different curriculum documents that come across our desks. We look at them all from our home country of Australia of course, plus the international ones as well. In this podcast I want to share with you three GIFTS that any curriculum document will give you, as well as three challenges that can be associated with them. This is because I really am a firm believer that everything in life has two sides. Its yin & yang, day & night and there is always two sides of a coin!  Psychologist Carl Jung is quoted as saying "Wisdom accepts that all things have two sides" Let's awaken our confidence about working with a new curricula by looking at both sides to take that overwhelm away,  so we’ll be ready to implement and upgrade to the next level. How to figure out how to get music students from where they are NOW to where they need to BE!

A long time ago, it occurred to me that music teaching is like going on a big treasure hunt. Always looking for that next tip, that next idea, that next nugget of gold, that next piece of the puzzle…but really all that time I was asking myself a question : “What formula or steps do you take to get students from where you find them now to where they need to be?” Everyone has one of these formulas, although they don’t always realise what it is. I now call them “frameworks”. It’s worth thinking about, so that you can share what you do with your students and colleagues and share it with intention so they’ll better understand. Life is full of questions and the most successful teachers are always solving the answers to the questions they ask! NOW is the time to get started! Enjoy & Let me know your thoughts! 51: The Power of embracing your NEW!

Have you ever been in that season of “something needs to change here”? It’s that feeling of balancing where you are now with climbing that “great teacher” mountain. It’s balancing that reality of what’s really going on right now with what you truly want. It’s about all the things you have to do to get there, the overwhelm and taking those first steps towards making that dream come true. That’s exactly what happened to me, and truthfully that feeling could have kept me in a music teacher “slump” forever. Instead I had to  learn some of  the most important lessons that I still implement into our programs, even today over a decade later … The power of doing and personally evolving teaching practices into the NEW. Creating a Daily Empowerment Plan for 2022: What it means and how to use it.

So you’re looking ahead at your calendar and the date keeps getting closer. The first term of teaching for 2022 you’ve been preparing for is coming at you full steam ahead, and just thinking of it makes you feel uncertain and anxious. What will happen when that first school bell finally rings? What changes will be about to take place for the 2022 teaching year? How will you focus amidst the pressure and nerves? Since it’s a new year with new goals, visions and plans I thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to what I’ve learned about the gift of certainty. With this sorted, you can have certainty in the classroom (or in hybrid, remote or in person teaching ) and therefore get certainty in your live. So the question is how do we create certainty in ourselves? … How do you create that feeling like you can make it all happen despite what’s happening around you… because when you create that “I can do this NO Matter what”  feeling, the truth is you can do the job to the best of your ability,.. and you’ll thrive because of it. How to Tap into the one teaching “Superpower” we ALL have.

If you watch any successful music teacher in action and ask them how they got that way, it boils down to these three things: 1) They act, sound and feel confident about the content they deliver. 2) They believe in themselves and in the skills they’ve developed. 3) They know what they want from any lesson or situation and know why they want it. I suppose if I said it another way, it’s like they tap into a natural “superpower” and they appear to have this magical charm or charisma with their students’. The thing to know here is that it's not just something unique to them, in fact it’s something we all have inside ourselves- certainty. All we have to do is learn how to tap into it! When you say “Yes” to learning about this, you're choosing to be the captain of your own ship and not trust luck, fate or someone else's opinion. Making choices and doing these 3 empowering daily habits give you the edge in your day-to-day teaching and life. Enjoy & Let me know your thoughts! My Favorite Strategies for Music Funding “Cuts”

Before we started the Fun Music Co, I taught in schools with little or no budget, and schools which went through “budget cuts”. Then when we started our own music school, there was no funding!! We just had to find a way to bootstrap ourselves to success. These days, we still get no outside funding and it’s such a positive because we know our programs work and that’s why teachers use them. Yet we still lean on our tried and tested strategies from over all these years, and have incorporated new ones to run with more ease. Here’s what I’ve learned about funding cuts after all these years and as I unpack our six best strategies from our toolbox! Enjoy & Let me know your thoughts! Leveraging the power of humour to get attention in the classroom.

Today’s podcast is about attention. How do you get it, and how do you keep it? There are many tools that we can access and use as teachers to gain our students attention, and this episode is about sharing one of them, which is totally learnable - and that is the power of humour. Today I’ve also got a story for you about how a wonderful band director I knew engaged their band, however this episode isn’t just for band directors. This session is useful for anyone teaching ... just about anything! The lessons learned are useful in any situation. Here at the Fun Music Company we’re committed to helping music teachers make their lessons more fun and engaging, so over the next few months we will be publishing lots of music jokes and other tools for making music lessons fun. We are even starting a new email list very soon with a “joke of the day” for music teachers. It isn't available just yet, but will be very soon. In the meantime, you can start with this: 10 Music Theory Jokes for every occasion.

    Progress vs Perfection

Progress and perfection do not mean the same things. One is much more important than the other. In this episode Janice explains why making progress on your skills in music are more important than the perfection of having completed that course or obtaining mastery in a specific area. Are you a #Fun Music Teacher?

We’ve all heard of the phrase”Time flies when you’re having fun!” but what does it really mean to be a Fun Music Teacher? Over the years, my husband Kevin and I have been able to shift our music teaching mindsets in a positive way! And it’s transformed so many aspects of our teaching and publishing life. I feel like we’ve learned that being a fun music teacher is much more than just being a superficial “happy” person all the time. This podcast isn’t created to lessen the importance of working hard and the disciplines required of any music or teaching practice. But I do hope it helps you look at what it means to be a music teacher through a different lens and invites more happiness and understanding in your life and career for the role fun plays in it. Why being late is a powerful lesson.

Have you ever been late for your classes? How do you react when other staff members are disappointed because of your lateness? Does being late teach you important lessons? ...Or is it the last thing you want to think about. As music teachers being late from time to time is inevitable - there’s not much time between lessons, teaching from a cart can be time consuming, classroom drama’s happen and returning teachers be can blissfully unaware about being late coming back to the class while the next teacher is getting angrier by the second because you’re running late! Whatever the reason- there’s a sinking feeling about when you’re late ...Or worse still you hear it from one of the students. So what do you do?

    Why motivation doesn't work

Here's a motivational idea: What if you were to give out sweets to every child who came to your class. Would that work? You probably know already that giving out sweets is what is called an extrinsic motivator - it's when you're trying to motivate another person from the outside. The other type of motivation is intrinsic motivation - the motivation that comes from within someone. That is what the subject of this episode is all about. How you can take advantage of the extrinsic and intrinsic motivators in your teaching, and an idea for a wonderful intrinsic motivator we have as music teachers, that other teachers just don't have. Find your focus, then double down.

Call me crazy, but I believe that music teaching programs should be kept simple- and there’s no better way than following an uncomplicated view. I originally learned this strategy from another podcaster Gary V and I’ve been putting it into practice with music teaching ever since. Click here to get the resources mentioned in the podcast.
