Sylvester "Sly" Williams lived one of them.Sly played one season of high school football at Jefferson City High School in Missouri. He started one game. Zero college programs recruited him. After graduation, he found himself working in a factory, assembling radiator parts for large combines, wondering if his football dreams were over before they really began. But Sly made one decision that changed everything: he walked on at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. Just belief, work ethic, and the refusal to accept what others thought was possible. From that walk-on tryout, Sly built himself into one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the country. He transferred to the University of North Carolina, earned First-Team All-American and First-Team All-ACC honors, and was selected 28th overall in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos.Four years later, Sly walked off the field as a Super Bowl 50 Champion, part of the legendary 2015 Denver Broncos defense that ranked number one in the entire NFL that season. In this episode of The Standard Podcast™, Sly shares:What it was like working on the factory floor before his breakthroughThe decision to walk on when nobody wanted him and what he believed about himself that no one else believedThe journey from community college to All-American to first-round pickWhat winning Super Bowl 50 meant after where his story beganNavigating 8 NFL seasons across 6 different organizationsBuilding identity beyond performance and what the overlooked athlete needs to hearWhether you're an athlete who's been told "no," a parent watching your child face rejection, or a coach who might be overlooking someone, Sly's story is proof that belief and discipline beat doubt and circumstance every single time. This isn't just about football — it's about what happens when you refuse to accept what others think about your potential. This isn't motivation. 1,051 Catches and a Legacy That Goes Beyond Numbers | Ep. 27 ft. Nik Lewis

1,051 Catches and a Legacy That Goes Beyond Numbers: Nik Lewis on 15 Seasons of ExcellenceWhen Nik Lewis broke Geroy Simon's CFL receptions record on August 24, 2017, it was the culmination of a 15-year career that redefined what it means to be an elite receiver in professional football.Nik's journey began at Southern Arkansas University, where he was an NCAA Division II All-American. From there, he signed with the Calgary Stampeders in 2004 and was immediately named CFL Rookie of the Year. What followed was a record-setting career: 1,051 career receptions, two Grey Cup championships (2008, 2014), five West Division All-Star selections, and induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2021.But Nik's career wasn't all smooth sailing. He dealt with significant adversity: a fractured fibula in 2013 that ended his nine-year streak of 1,000-yard seasons, a reduced role in 2014 that ended his 166-game reception streak, and the challenge of maintaining elite performance for 15 seasons. In this episode of The Standard Podcast™, Nik shares:What it really takes to sustain elite performance for 15 seasonsHow he overcame injuries, setbacks, and reduced rolesThe character and discipline required to break records while maintaining integrityWhat he's teaching young receivers as a coach that goes beyond techniqueThe truth about building legendary careers versus flash-in-the-pan successToday, Nik serves as a coach with the Calgary Stampeders, where his legendary career began, passing on the principles that made him the CFL's all-time receptions leader to the next generation. This isn't just about football — it's about what sustained excellence really looks like. This isn't motivation. From Super Bowl Champion to Building Winning Cultures | Ep. 26 ft. Emmanuel Smith

From Practice Squad to Super Bowl Champion: Emmanuel Smith on Building Winning CulturesMost undrafted free agents never make it past their first training camp. Emmanuel Smith went undrafted, bounced between practice squads, and won a Super Bowl ring.At Vanderbilt University, Emmanuel played linebacker in the SEC before signing with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2018. What followed was the classic undrafted journey: roster cuts, practice squad moves, injuries, and the constant uncertainty of trying to earn a spot.Emmanuel was waived by Atlanta, signed to Tampa Bay's practice squad, released again, and finally found a home with the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad. On February 2, 2020, Emmanuel earned the ultimate validation when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV — making him a champion despite never being a starter.Today, Emmanuel builds winning cultures in business by applying the lessons he learned on NFL sidelines. His approach focuses on people and process: clarity of roles, standards everyone owns, short feedback loops, and celebrating small wins. The result is what he calls "trust over fear" — where effort compounds and performance becomes repeatable. In this episode of The Standard Podcast™, Emmanuel shares:What the undrafted journey taught him about resilience and buy-inHow he won a Super Bowl without being the starWhy trust beats fear in building championship culturesHow to translate sports lessons to business teamsThe role of faith and inclusive leadership in his missionThis isn't just about football — it's about what happens when someone applies championship lessons to building teams where everyone can contribute at their best. This isn't motivation. Jared Pinkney was different — he went undrafted and turned it into opportunity. At Vanderbilt University, Jared was a second-team All-SEC tight end projected as a first-round NFL Draft pick by ESPN analysts Todd McShay and Mel Kiper. When draft day came and went without his name being called, Jared signed with the Atlanta Falcons and embarked on a journey that would take him to five NFL teams.Through practice squads, roster cuts, and constant uncertainty, Jared fought for every opportunity — eventually making his NFL debut as a starter for the Detroit Lions in 2022. His NFL career included stints with the Falcons, Titans, Lions, Rams, and Bears before transitioning to his current role as an Independent Financial Professional.Today, Jared applies the same discipline, focus, and teamwork that defined his football career to helping individuals, families, and entrepreneurs build financial security. From Fifth-Round Pick to Super Bowl Champion: Malik Jackson on 10 Years in the NFL

The average NFL career lasts 3.3 years. Malik Jackson played for 10 seasons.Malik was selected in the fifth round (137th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. Fifth-round picks aren't supposed to last a decade in the NFL. They're not supposed to win Super Bowls. They're not supposed to make the Pro Bowl. But Malik Jackson did all three. In Super Bowl 50, Malik scored the game's first touchdown when he recovered a fumble in the end zone forced by Von Miller — giving the Broncos an early 10-0 lead over the Carolina Panthers. Denver won 24-10, and Malik became a Super Bowl champion in his fourth NFL season. After leaving Denver, Malik signed an $85.5 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he moved from defensive end to defensive tackle and became part of "Sacksonville" — one of the most dominant defensive lines in NFL history. In 2017, Malik made the Pro Bowl after recording 8 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 40 total tackles.Over 10 seasons, Malik played for 4 different organizations — Denver Broncos (2012-2015), Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-2018), Philadelphia Eagles (2019-2020), and Cleveland Browns (2021). He navigated position changes, team transitions, injuries, and role adjustments while maintaining his professionalism and performance. What separated Malik's 10-year career from the average 3.3 years? Jay Jackson: From Ninth-Round Pick to 20 Years in Professional Baseball

Jay Jackson was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the ninth round of the 2008 MLB Draft. He never played a game for the Cubs.Instead, Jay spent nearly two decades grinding through professional baseball — six MLB teams (San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, San Francisco Giants, Atlanta Braves, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins), four years playing in Japan (Hiroshima Toyo Carp, Chiba Lotte Marines), countless minor league stops, roster cuts, releases, and the constant uncertainty of being a journeyman. His path wasn't straight. He started as a starting pitcher, transitioned to the bullpen to extend his career, and bounced between the majors and Triple-A for years. But Jay never quit. In 2023, he posted a 2.12 ERA with Toronto. In 2024, he struggled with Minnesota and was designated for assignment. In 2025, he retired from playing and became the pitching coach for the West Virginia Black Bears.Join Jay Jackson and The Standard Podcast™ for a raw, honest conversation about what it really takes to survive in professional baseball when you're not a first-round pick, how to build identity beyond the jersey, and why character and discipline matter more than talent when the path gets hard. This is the journey nobody talks about — and the truth every athlete needs to hear.Episode Topics:Being a ninth-round pick and the chip on your shoulderPlaying for six MLB teams and four years in JapanThe mental game of being a journeymanTransitioning from starter to reliever to surviveRoster cuts, releases, and keeping belief aliveLife after 20 years in professional baseballCoaching the next generationBuilding identity beyond performanceThis isn't motivation.
