With No Parents to Guide Her She Learned We're Stronger Than We Think with Madison Orlando | Episode 73

Wild Horse Partnerships Built Without Force with Mustang Trainer Michael Sanchez | Episode 72

Most people think training horses requires dominance. Michael Sanchez learned it's more about patience. Michael Sanchez works at a barn in Leeds, Alabama that has gentled hundreds of wild Mustangs. He didn't grow up dreaming of working with horses—he was the maintenance guy, the one picking stalls and fixing fences. But one day he was asked to hold a horse, and that was the start of many more horses to come. Now Michael spends his days teaching wild horses to trust humans, and he's learned that the key to building partnership isn't control—it's knowing the difference between being firm and being aggressive. As a 2026 Horses For Mental Health Ambassador for Samson's Strength Sustainable Veterans Project, Michael has seen firsthand how horses heal when you give them respect instead of force, and how that same approach can transform your own life. In this episode, you'll discover:• What it means to be firm without being aggressive (and why that distinction changes everything)• Why the first time a wild horse picks up its foot is about trust, not obedience• How to know when you're not the right person for a particular horse• Why Mustangs take longer to train than domestic horses—and why rushing the process breaks the partnership• What Michael learned about patience after gentling 300 wild horses• How horses helped him heal after losing his mom (and why his boss told him to just go sit with them)• Why building partnership with horses teaches you how to show up differently in your own lifeThis episode is for anyone who's adopted a Mustang and feels stuck, anyone who wants to train horses without force, and anyone who's learning that the best relationships are built on respect, not control.Support Michael's Horses for Mental Health work: Learn more about Michael's advocacy for equine therapy and Mustangs: https://horsesformentalhealth.org/campaigns/michael-sanchez/Get your free guide: Download the 5-Minute Emotional Reset: https://thetouchofamustang.org/get-your-free-reset/Ready for personalized support? Grace didn't grow up in a horse family—she had zero experience when she convinced her parents to let her adopt her first Mustang as a teenager. Since then, she's competed in multiple Mustang Makeovers, won Colt Starting Championships, gentled wild Kaimanawa horses at Liberty in New Zealand with Kelly Wilson, and now prepares 25-35 Mustangs per year for export to Germany's Mustang Makeover. How to Keep Your Mustang When You're Ready to Give Up with Wild Horse Partnership Program Founders Jana Leniger & Brittany Ference | Episode 68

What if the reason your Mustang isn't progressing has nothing to do with the horse?Brittany and Jana continued to see the same problem, individuals who adopted a Mustang, but didn't know where to turn when it became difficult. Sending the horse off to the trainer was often ineffective because, while the horse progressed, the owner stayed the same. Jana Leniger, owner of Chasing a Dream Equine and virtual riding coach, works with Mustang adopters who want to do the training themselves instead of sending their horse away. Brittany Ference, Executive Director of Great Escape Mustangs, runs a nonprofit that supports Mustangs off-range through sanctuary and adopter education. Together, they created the Wild Horse Partnership Program—a three-month coaching intensive that keeps Mustangs in their adopted homes by empowering owners with the skills, confidence, and accountability they need to build a lasting partnership with their horse. In this episode, you'll discover:• Why the "send to trainer for 90 days" model fails Mustang adopters (and what works instead)• How 90 minutes a week with your horse creates more long-term success than 90 days with a professional• Why people with no horse experience sometimes progress faster than experienced riders with Mustangs• The real reason adopters feel like giving up (hint: it's not the horse)• Why choosing a Mustang based on color instead of character sets you up for failure• How accountability and customized support keep horses in their homesThis episode is for anyone who's adopted a Mustang and feels stuck, overwhelmed, or ready to give up—and anyone considering adoption who wants to know what it really takes to succeed.Get your free guide:Download the 5-Minute Emotional Reset: https://thetouchofamustang.org/get-your-free-reset/Ready for personalized support?Book a free 30-minute consultation (only 5 spots available per month): https://calendly.com/thetouchofamustang/free-30-minute-coaching-sessionDeepen your practice:Get the Emotional Mastery Journal - your 6-month guide to emotional awareness and regulation: https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Mastery-Journal-Shalyce Cluff/dp/B0DQXV59SWJoin the herd:Support the podcast and get exclusive content, guided meditations, monthly Q&As, and more: https://ko-fi.com/thetouchofamustangLove the podcast?Leave a review so others can find the show!Connect with The Touch of a Mustang:Website: https://thetouchofamustang.org/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetouchofamustang/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheTouchofaMustangConnect with Jana & Brittany:Wild Horse Partnership Program: https://www.greatescapemustangs.org/wild-horse-partnership-programDiscovery Call: https://calendly.com/greatescapemustangs/whpp-discovery-callInstagram:Brittany: https://www.instagram.com/great_escape_mustangs/Jana: https://www.instagram.com/chasingadreamequine/Facebook: Brittany: https://www.facebook.com/greatescapemustangs Jana:: https://www.facebook.com/ChasingADreamEquineWebsites: Brittany: https://www.greatescapemustangs.org/Jana: https://janaoutwest.com/

Katja's images exudes the peaceful nature of the horse when she enters their world instead of pulling the horses into hers. We also explore why these images can affect us so deeply. How something as simple as looking at a horse can shift your state, bring awareness to what you’re carrying, and help you move through struggles. This is a conversation about more than photography. It’s about presence, perception, and why horses— even through an image—have the ability to bring us back to a more peaceful state of mind. Why Horses Change Us with Human-Animal Interaction Researcher Dr. Leanne Nieforth | Episode 58

What if the "magic" you feel with horses isn't magic at all—but measurable, repeatable science?Dr. Leanne Nieforth, Assistant Professor at the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University, has spent her career studying how humans and animals interact, with a focus on equine-assisted interventions and service dogs for trauma survivors. With a PhD in Human-Animal Interaction, a Master's in Communication, and a Bachelor's in Animal Science, Leanne brings a unique interdisciplinary approach to understanding why horses affect us the way they do. Her research spans military veterans, first responders, at-risk youth, and trauma survivors—and the findings are validating what horse people have known all along: horses change us in profound, measurable ways.In this episode, you'll discover:• Why cortisol awakening responses in veterans with PTSD change when they have a service dog (and what that means for horses)• The five communication processes that promote resilience in trauma survivors working with horses• Why walking up and touching a horse without asking mirrors how we violate boundaries in human relationships• How horses teach us to recognize when we're bringing ungrounded energy into a space• Why people with no horse experience sometimes progress faster than experienced horse people in equine-assisted interventions• What three new attachment scales reveal about the human-horse bondThis episode is for anyone who's ever wondered if horses really help, anyone working in equine-assisted services, and anyone who wants the science to back up what they already feel in their bones.Get your free guide:Download the 5-Minute Emotional Reset: https://thetouchofamustang.org/get-your-free-reset/Ready for personalized support?Book a free 30-minute consultation (only 5 spots available per month): https://calendly.com/thetouchofamustang/free-30-minute-coaching-sessionDeepen your practice:Get the Emotional Mastery Journal - your 6-month guide to emotional awareness and regulation: https://www.amazon.com/Emotional-Mastery-Journal-Shalyce-Cluff/dp/B0DQXV59SWJoin the herd:Support the podcast and get exclusive content, guided meditations, monthly Q&As, and more: https://ko-fi.com/thetouchofamustangLove the podcast?Leave a review so others can find the show!Connect with The Touch of a Mustang:Website: https://thetouchofamustang.org/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetouchofamustang/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheTouchofaMustangConnect with Dr. Leanne Nieforth:HAPI Lab Website: https://vet.purdue.edu/discovery/nieforth/Personal Website: www.leannenieforth.com
