The Truth Hurts w/ Jeff Weiss, Rosecrans Vic and Free

The Truth Hurts is the antithesis to hip-hop podcasts dedicated to shameless clout-chasing and nihilistic exploitation. Instead of contrived drama and sinister gossip, the show seeks to chronicle the stories and lives of America's most compelling artists. It features journalists who've been embedded for years in the West Coast scene, but covers topics and personalities impacting popular culture at large. Each week, hosts Jeff Weiss, Rosecrans Vic & Free sit down at Pro Club in LA with musicians to break down their art, life and career from an honest, unflinching, music-first perspective.

    DaBoii (SOB X RBE)

DaBoii, one of the greatest Bay Area rappers of the last decade, joins Jeff Weiss and Mz.Free on this special episode of The Truth Hurts filmed at EMPIRE studios in San Francisco. He talks about the origins of SOB X RBE, his legendary hip-hop group formed in Vallejo, which carried the spirit of the Bay into a new generation while drawing from outside influences like the scenes in LA and Chicago. He also breaks down his solo career, how he and Slimmy B came to an understanding for SOB X RBE’s recent reunion shows, and what he has planned for his own and his group’s future discography. DaBoii is one of music’s most levelheaded, principled artists, resisting the industry and society’s constant pull toward selling out for clout. He explains why he’s different: changing the game like Steph Curry, or Raphael from Ninja Turtles, or the NWA movie. And of course, he also tells stories like smoking with Snoop Dogg and being in the studio with Kendrick Lamar while making “Paramedic!” for the Black Panther soundtrack.DaBoii also discusses his favorite 2Pac songs. This week on the Truth Hurts podcast, Jeff Weiss & Mz.Free travel to the Bay for an interview with local rap supergroup 1Umbrella. In lineage to The Click and The Pack, 1Umbrella is an organic combination of five of the Bay’s most original rappers—ALLBLACK, 22nd Jim, Lil Bean, Lil Yee and Zaybang—into a group that exemplifies the unique creative spirit and independent hustle of their homebase. Their genuine friendship and individual rap skills translate into an authentic sound forged from the region’s hyphy history, but unified in a goal to change the Bay’s narrative.1Umbrella breaks down how the Bay has changed since they grew up, how hyphy was dangerous, why almost everyone who’s anyone got their sauce from the Bay, and how the tech industry took over but gang culture never did. They also talk about their love for LA artists like Drakeo the Ruler and Desto Dubb, get into conspiracy theories about aliens and underwater civilizations, and explain why there is never any need for any gimmicks.

His eccentric personality, Mexican heritage, and affiliation with the religion Santeria make him a compelling character with a unique perspective that cuts through in his songs. He got started listening to Meek Mill and Lil Wayne and searching for Tyler, the Creator Type Beats, but Skrilla doesn't sound like any of those artists and no one else could possibly sound like him. ABOUT THIS SHOW
