What Is God Up To? Part 2Acts 16:16-40Teacher: Tommy BaileyDate: September 6, 2026In Acts 16:16-40, the gospel has reached the European continent for the first time, and it takes root in a Roman colony called Philippi. When the name of Jesus sets a slave girl free from an evil spirit, her owners lose their income, a mob forms, and Paul and Silas are beaten and thrown into prison. At midnight they are praying and singing hymns when an earthquake shakes the foundations and opens every door. The earthquake made it clear that there is a higher authority than Rome.Luke draws our attention to three unlikely conversions in Philippi: a businesswoman, an enslaved girl, and a Roman jailer. A woman, a slave, and a gentile. Lydia was an honest seeker whose heart the Lord opened at a riverside prayer service. The slave girl was bound twice over and met by a power greater than the one that held her. The jailer wasn't seeking anything at all that day, and before the night was over he was asking what he must do to be saved. The earthquake in Philippi did not come to break Paul and Silas out of jail. It came to set a jailer free in Christ. What Is God Up To? Forbidden to speak the word in two regions, they arrive in the port city of Troas with no clear direction, but with a mission that has not changed. There Paul sees a vision of a man of Macedonia pleading for help, and the team concludes together that God is calling them to preach the gospel there. Setting sail from Troas, they carry the good news of Jesus to the continent of Europe for the first time.What unfolds along the way is a story of God's provision through people. The God of Great ReversalsRuth 4Teacher: Pastor Tommy BaileyDate: July 26, 2026Is history going somewhere, or is it just moving along like a boat without a rudder? Most of us never say the question out loud, but it surfaces when life turns out differently than we hoped. It surfaces when suffering becomes personal. The book of Ruth arrives in the days when the judges ruled, a time of corruption and injustice when there was no king in the land and everyone did what was right in their own eyes. It also arrives at a time of great loss for a family far from home in Moab. The entire book of Ruth responds to that question with a costly redemption at the city gate and a baby born in Bethlehem.Join Pastor Tommy as we finish our four-week series in Ruth and consider the God of great reversals. Boaz binds himself to a family that had lost nearly everything, at a cost the law never required him to pay. Providence in a Field of BarleyRuth 2Teacher: Pastor Matt PiersonDate: July 12, 2026In Ruth chapter 1, we follow the story of Naomi, a woman who has moved with her husband and sons to the land of Moab to escape a famine in Bethlehem. At the end of chapter 1, Naomi, having lost her husband and both sons, returns to Bethlehem along with her daughter-in-law Ruth. In the second chapter of Ruth, the women are back in Bethlehem, just as the barley harvest begins. Despite the obstacles of being a widow, desperately poor, and a foreigner, Ruth rolls up her sleeves and sets out to work in the barley fields.Join Pastor Matt as we study through the second chapter of Ruth and observe how God is working behind the scenes, guiding Ruth to the barley fields of Boaz, a wealthy and worthy man who also happens to be a kinsman of Naomi, of the clan of Elimilech, Naomi’s husband. Returning HomeRuth 1Teacher: Pastor Tommy BaileyDate: July 5, 2026The book of Ruth is a quiet story tucked between the tumultuous period of the Judges and the rise of Israel’s kings. In the first chapter of Ruth, a famine drives a small family from Bethlehem, the house of bread, into Moab, a pagan land far from the presence and promises of God. There, in a country that was never home, Naomi loses her husband and both of her sons, and is left with her grief, two widowed daughters-in-law, and a longing to return home.Join Pastor Tommy as we open Ruth 1 and follow Naomi and Ruth on the road back to Bethlehem. In her season of loss, Naomi hears that God has visited his people, and she sets her face toward home. Neither the suffering inflicted by the world nor our prideful sin can separate us from His sovereign rule. In every instance of life, God is at work even though it may seem to be “behind the scenes.” The work of God in all circumstances happens by His providential interventions, through the spiritual realm of angelic work, and by inviting us to join via our own obedient actions. God is close to the righteous so that they are afforded peace, answered prayer, and involvement into His mission. Tragically, for the prideful and the lost, God’s nearness will result in their judgment. When Religion Gets in the WayActs 11:1-18Teacher: Pastor Tom YarbroughDate: June 14, 2026As we continue the narrative of the conversion of Cornelius the Gentile and his household, the final scene takes place back in Jerusalem, where not everyone in the church is pleased with Peter’s mission to Caesarea. We are introduced to a group of strict Jewish believers, known as the ”circumcision party”, who take exception with Peter’s fellowship with Gentiles, whom they consider unclean. This group identifies themselves primarily through their own adherence to Jewish custom rather than their new life in Christ. Peter’s response is to give a reasonable and orderly defense that not only shares the new spiritual vision he has been given but also leaves no room for doubt that this movement is the work of the Holy Spirit as confirmed by the words of Jesus himself. How can this passage encourage us today when we too may be tempted to cling to any identity other than a gospel identity? A Light So LovelyActs 10Teacher: Pastor Matt PiersonDate: June 7, 2026Throughout the book of Acts, we witness the wildfire-like growth of the Church; beginning in Jerusalem and spreading first through Judea, and reaching even into Samaria, a people long at odds with Israel. The Gospel is proclaimed, and the Samaritans believe and receive the Holy Spirit. In Acts chapter 10, Luke will recount an even more remarkable moment. The Holy Spirit brings together Cornelius, a Roman centurion who is a God-fearer, and Simon Peter, who is still a rule-follower despite his faith in Christ. Acts 9:31-43Teacher: Pastor Tommy Bailey Date: May 31, 2026In Acts 9:31–43, Luke pauses to take the pulse of the early church, and he reveals a flourishing community: at peace, being built up, walking in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, and multiplying. Then he takes us to two bedsides. In Lydda, Peter heals a paralyzed man in the name of Jesus. In Joppa, a beloved disciple named Tabitha has died, and Peter kneels, prays, and calls her back to life. The Mission of the SpiritActs 8:1-25Teacher: Pastor Tommy BaileyDate: May 10, 2026Before Jesus ascended, He promised His disciples that the Holy Spirit would empower them to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. In Acts 8:1-25, we arrive at a turning point in that mission. After the martyrdom of Stephen, fierce persecution in Jerusalem scatters the church, and what should have ended the mission instead ignites it. The gospel breaks into Samaria, a region long held in spiritual darkness and separated from the rest of Israel by nearly a thousand years of ethnic and religious bigotry from both Jews and Samaritans. There Philip preaches Christ, demons flee, the broken are healed, and the city is filled with joy.Join Pastor Tommy as we walk through this turn in the story by considering four figures: Saul the persecutor, Philip the refugee evangelist, the Samaritans longing for hope, and Simon Magus, the magician who craved power.
