The Illusion of Control: The Wisdom of the Fool

Episode Description What if your need to understand everything is the very thing keeping you from truly living? In this episode, Dean explores the illusion of control through the archetypes of the Shadow Magician and the Fool. Together, they reveal how fear disguises itself as knowledge, why certainty can become a prison, and how the courage to enter the unknown opens the doorway to a richer, more authentic life. From manifestation and spirituality to inner child healing, devotion, and the wisdom hidden within uncertainty, this conversation is an invitation to step beyond the walls you've built to feel safe and rediscover what it means to truly meet life.   Core Themes The illusion of control The Shadow Magician archetype The wisdom of the Fool Fear disguised as knowledge Presence over prediction Manifestation and attachment to outcomes Moving beyond entitlement and victimhood Trusting intuition instead of outsourcing wisdom Meeting the inner child with compassion Learning as a spiritual practice Living beyond certainty Entering life rather than observing it Devotion over perfection Faith and surrender The alchemical path of becoming Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:00 Wisdom, fear and the need for control 03:20 The Shadow Magician 05:00 Manifestation, entitlement and attachment 08:00 Outsourcing your own wisdom 10:20 Why life refuses to be controlled 12:15 The Fool's journey into the unknown 15:00 Knowledge versus lived experience 17:30 Learning as initiation 20:00 Meeting the unconscious 21:30 Listening to the wounded inner child 24:15 Every voice deserves to be heard 26:00 Creating safety from within 28:00 Leaving the tower and entering life   Links: RAW: Men's Primal Embodiment Retreat Book a Discovery Call About Dean: Dean Bentley is a speaker, mentor and host of The Wyrd Way podcast. Following The Thread: From Garage Circles to Main Stages

Description: A few weeks ago I found myself standing on the main stage at the Mind Body Spirit Festival in Melbourne. If you had told me six years ago that I would be doing that, I probably would have laughed. More than likely, I would have found a reason why it wasn't possible. At the time, I was running a small men's circle from a garage while studying engineering at university. I didn't have a plan. I didn't know where it was leading. I wasn't trying to become a speaker. Truthfully, I wasn't trying to become much of anything. I was simply following something. Looking back now, that has been the common thread through much of my life. Not a strategy. Not a five-year plan. Not certainty. A thread. A feeling that there was something here worth moving towards, even when I couldn't explain why. This episode began because so many people in Melbourne asked me the same question: "How did you get here?" And the more I sat with that question, the more I realised there wasn't a simple answer. There were men's circles. There were mentors. There were retreats. There were failed attempts, uncomfortable conversations, shaky Instagram lives, moments of deep self-doubt, and more times than I can count where I questioned whether I had anything worth sharing at all. There were also moments where life seemed to open a door and ask me to take a step. Not ten steps. Just one. This conversation is a reflection on that journey. Not because I believe I have it figured out, but because I know there are people listening who are standing at the edge of something themselves. Something calling them forward. Something asking to be lived. My experience has been that we rarely get the whole map. We are given a thread, a direction, a next step. And if we are willing to trust it, life has a way of revealing what comes after. This episode is about following that thread.   Time Stamps: 00:00 Welcome to The Wyrd Way 01:00 Returning to the podcast after a break 01:37 Speaking at Mind Body Spirit Festival Melbourne 02:00 The RAW Men's Retreat and creating transformational spaces 03:27 Why people kept asking: "How did you get here?" 04:03 From fearing the stage to loving it 05:00 Growth through following aliveness and discomfort 06:54 Reflecting on six years of mentoring and transformation 07:24 The first men's circle in a university garage 09:00 Beginning before knowing what you're doing 09:40 Engineering, anxiety, depression, and the search for healing 10:18 Breathwork, meditation, plant medicine, and self-discovery 12:22 Becoming a coach and facing imposter syndrome 13:24 Starting imperfectly and learning in public 15:17 The terrifying first Instagram Live 16:04 Learning to love the parts of yourself that feel afraid 16:55 Becoming versus performing 17:33 Ego, collapse, and coming back into alignment 19:14 Authenticity and owning what you're feeling 20:20 Looking for the next step instead of the whole path 21:25 Stewarding a vision without controlling it 22:01 Treating your creations as living entities 23:01 Business, relationships, and being in conversation with life 24:42 The danger of trying to think your way through everything 25:30 Being in conversation with the universe 26:11 Following intuition, mentors, and unexpected opportunities 27:27 Vision quests, relationships, and life's turning points 28:20 Following the thread of your own becoming 29:02 Leadership as going first 30:15 Six years later: arriving on the main stage 31:04 The role fear has played in every stage of growth 31:41 Greatness, service, and sharing your gifts 32:24 Mentorship, RAW Retreat, and next opportunities 34:01 Closing reflections   Links: RAW: Men's Primal Embodiment Retreat Book a Discovery Call About Dean: Dean Bentley is a speaker, mentor and host of The Wyrd Way podcast. Unlocking The Depth of Your Soul: The Transformative Powers of Presence, Expression & Surrender

Welcome Back Wyrd Wayer's Ok, so y'all getting a bit more this week because I've been a bit bored by AI's write up of these episodes (don't worry I'll still include it so you know what this week was all about), and wanted to create a bit more intimacy and realness.  This week was fresh. As always I started with a bit of a ramble before really finding the thread of where we were at this week.  This episode landed a lot of clarity for myself on some of the core themes of my own work and highlights the areas that I continue to return to, expression, alchemy, and embodiment. It's all about that feeling yo, and expressing it into this world.  My ole adage of "how can I be more in this world?" rings true on this episode and if you want to know how to deepen into your world, life and connection to yourself, this is a good episode for you.  So enjoy, share and let me know what lands for you   Summary (AI): In this deeply personal transmission, Dean Bentley explores the healing power of slowing down in a world addicted to force, hustle, and constant self-improvement. Fresh from hosting his Edge workshop and navigating his own exhaustion, Dean speaks candidly about guilt, rest, nervous system overwhelm, emotional contraction, and the unconscious conditioning that tells us we must always be “on” to be worthy of love. This episode is an invitation to soften. To breathe. To stop trying to force your healing and instead create safety within yourself so the body, heart, and soul can finally open. Dean dives into: The shame many people feel around rest and doing nothing Why healing cannot be rushed Nervous system contraction and emotional safety The difference between force and attunement The savior dynamic in relationships Expression as alchemy Learning to embody authenticity The beauty of surrender and self-acceptance Why your greatest task may simply be allowing yourself to be fully seen This is a transmission about coming home to yourself. About releasing the pressure to become someone else. About realizing that perhaps the deepest healing isn’t becoming more — but finally allowing yourself to be. Raw, honest, spacious, and deeply human. Welcome back to The Wyrd Way. Initiation In The Modern World: Why modern initiation cannot look like the ancient world

In this episode of The Wyrd Way, Dean Bentley explores what initiation truly means in the modern world — and why so many ancient rites cannot simply be copied into contemporary culture. This conversation dives into the evolution from boyhood to embodied adulthood, the separation from the mother archetype, the collapse of egoic identity, and the necessity of relationship with something greater than the self. Dean reflects on the differences between tribal initiation and modern psychological development, exploring how community, nature, suffering, sovereignty, and soul all play a role in the initiatory path. Drawing on the work of Bill Plotkin and Carl Jung, this episode speaks to parents, facilitators, mentors, and seekers alike — especially those navigating the tension between wanting to guide others and learning to surrender control. This is a conversation about becoming. Not through force, but through embodied relationship with life itself. Key Themes Modern vs tribal initiation Masculine maturation Ego death and reconstruction Nature as initiator Sovereignty and soul The danger of forcing growth Embodiment vs spiritual bypassing Relationship with community and the living world Parenting, control, and letting go Initiation as a lifelong journey Timestamps 00:00 — Opening Invocation: Finding your Wyrd Way 01:12 — What initiation meant in ancient cultures 02:26 — Why tribal initiation differs from the modern world 04:25 — Why modern initiation is not a quick fix 06:16 — Growth through force vs natural blooming 07:02 — Becoming a man before your time 08:23 — Why relationship with nature matters 09:15 — Moving beyond egocentric living 10:43 — The importance of relationship and community 12:27 — Defeat, humility, and true initiation 14:15 — Preparing someone for initiation 16:22 — Why initiation must be chosen 18:25 — Darkness as a doorway to transformation 19:07 — Parenting, control, and surrender 22:14 — Destiny, fate, and unavoidable initiation 24:00 — Rebuilding modern tribal culture 25:50 — The Edge Workshop invitation   The Edge Workshop   About Dean: Dean Bentley is a speaker, mentor and host of The Wyrd Way podcast. Concerns Of The Healing World: Discernment, Dogma, and the Illusion of Truth

Welcome Back Wyrd Wayer's Welcome back Wyrd Wayer’s, This week I dive into what has been percolating in the background as I prepare for the upcoming Edge workshop, and the RAW retreat in August—concerns I am currently witnessing within the healing space. Stemming from my own experience walking this path, and what I witness both online and in person, this episode speaks into the subtle distortions that can arise in spaces meant for growth, healing, and transformation. We explore the tension between truth and dogma… presence and performance… guidance and dependency… And ultimately, what it means to walk a path that is truly your own. This is not a rejection of the healing world—but an invitation into deeper discernment, sovereignty, and embodied truth. If you’ve ever felt something was “off” but couldn’t name it… this one is for you.   What We Uncover in This Episode – The danger of rigid “truths” and how dogma disconnects you from your own knowing – Why discernment is essential in a space filled with teachers, methods, and ideologies – The evolution of the spiritual path: from structure → collapse → embodied presence – How the drama triangle (victim, rescuer, saviour) operates in healing spaces – The difference between performance and presence in emotional expression – Addiction to intensity vs the power of softness, safety, and regulation – How healing work can reinforce identity instead of dissolving it – Moving from consumption into creation and lived embodiment – The unseen impact of what you consume (music, media, environment) on your psyche – Reclaiming personal authority and walking your own path with integrity   Timestamps 00:00 – Opening Invocation: The Wyrd Way 01:00 – Introduction + Edge Workshop & RAW Retreat 03:40 – Why I’m Questioning the Healing Space 05:00 – When “Truth” Becomes Dogma 07:45 – Reality Tunnels & The Fluid Nature of Truth 10:00 – The Guru Trap & Lack of Humility 12:50 – The Drama Triangle (Victim, Rescuer, Saviour) 14:45 – Stages of the Spiritual Path (Structure → Collapse → Presence) 17:20 – The Danger of “This Is The Way” Thinking 20:10 – Reclaiming Discernment & Personal Authority 22:10 – Consumption vs Creation 23:20 – Performance vs Presence in Healing Work 26:00 – Addiction to Intensity & Emotional Expression 28:00 – The Power of Softness, Slowness & Safety 30:30 – When Healing Reinforces the Ego 32:00 – Becoming “Better” vs Becoming True 33:50 – Grounding vs Spiritual Escapism 35:00 – The Impact of What You Consume (Music, Media, Environment) 37:00 – Clearing Your System & Returning to Authentic Truth 38:00 – Closing Reflections + Invitations   The Edge Workshop   About Dean: Dean Bentley is a speaker, mentor and host of The Wyrd Way podcast.
