    Contextualizing What is Yoga?

Patañjali's Yogasūtra presents yoga philosophy for modern life. Chase Bossart, Director of the Yoga Well Institute and long-time student of Mr. Deśikachar, explains the definition of Yoga from the Yogasūtra, which differs from the Bhagavad Gītā and Haṭhayogapradīpika in its philosophical presentation. Using the characteristic sūtra, YS I.2 word-by-word, weaving in other relevant sūtras, and illustrating a range of capacities, Chase presents a translation with context and nuance for practical application. The Yogasūtra is a blueprint for living a meaningful and satisfying life, including instructions for coming out of suffering and finding and following your life purpose(s).  Join Chase's weekly Yogasūtra class at https://www.yogawell.com/yoga-philosophy/ The Yoga Well Institute's Yoga Philosophy courses study the sacred texts of yoga traditionally. We read each line, word by word, translating from Sanskrit, reviewing the contexts, discussing the practical applications, answering questions, and sharing experiences. Led by an experienced teacher and enriched by the questions and observations of students in various stages of their personal path, these courses reveal Yoga as a path to be practiced on the mat and in daily life. Comments on Yoga Therapy and IAYT Certification Tracts

On January 27th, 2026, Yoga Well's Executive Director Chase Bossart met with the Yoga Well community via Zoom to discuss IAYT's proposed 300-hour Foundations of Yoga Therapy certification track for licensed health care workers. Arguing against IAYT's plan, Chase proposed a series of principles for IAYT to use in future decision-making processes, including: 1. Holding the experiential aspect of Yoga to be equally important to Yoga's informational aspect, and structure requirements accordingly;  2. Honoring Yoga's original Indian anatomies & physiologies as legitimate medical systems separate and apart from the Allopathic models dominant in the West, and not relegating Yoga to be subsumed within those.  Since Viniyoga teachings, as passed down through Mr. Desikachar and T. Krishnamacharya, have so many healing principles important in the therapeutic application of yoga, we consider IAYT an important proponent of Yoga Therapy, and care deeply how they manage their role. The Enduring Legacy of Krishnamacharya's Āsana Teachings with Aimee Echo

Śrī Krishnamacharya's teachings on āsana were disseminated through various students who became teachers themselves. These shared foundations manifest in remarkably similar ways within their respective practices. Moreover, common stereotypes of Viniyoga and Aṣṭāṅgayoga completely miss how these principles are introduced and then developed into extremely sophisticated practices over time.
