Ps Peter Eng explained that holiness is God’s command and character—believers are chosen to be holy, not merely happy. Repentance means a decisive change of direction from self-pleasing to God-pleasing living, while confession is continual realignment when we stray. Holiness begins with repentance, continues through repeated repentance and daily confession. God desires not our pursuit of happiness but of holiness; joy follows holiness. Christians likewise grieve honestly—never bypassing lament—as Jesus wept (John 11:35), yet we grieve with hope of resurrection and reunion (1 Thess 4:13–18), choosing integrity amid sorrow.
