It's time for QCinema 2024, and this time the festival is opening with an omnibus film: Director's Factory Philippines, a collection of four films that are codirected by a Filipino and Asian director. The four films making up this omnibus are: Cold Cut - dir. Don Eblahan (Philippines) and Tan Siyou (Singapore) Silig - dir. Arvin Belarmino (Philippines) and Lomorpich Rithy (aka YoKi, Cambodia) Nightbirds - dir. Maria Estela Paiso (Philippines) and Ashok Vish (India) Walay Balay - dir. Eve Baswel (Philippines) and Gogularaajan Rajendran (Malaysia) In this special episode of Third World Cinema Club, the members of the 2nd edition of the QCinema Critics Lab will be talking about the four short films making up this omnibus. This year's Critics Lab participants are Acer Batislaong, Brontë Lacsamana, Joaquin Singson, Ligaya Villablanca, Maverick Alviar, and Mac John Bautista. From the official QCinema Press Release: Acer Batislaong is a Caloocan-based writer who covers government contracting daily and independent Filipino cinema by night. He’s a contributor for IONCINEMA.com and has written features for Nylon Manila, covering youth culture and entertainment. In his downtime, you might find Acer listening to a voice memo from Lav Diaz urging him to keep chasing his filmmaking dreams. Brontë Lacsamana is a multimedia reporter who covers arts, culture, and entertainment for the Philippine business newspaper BusinessWorld. She writes about visual arts, performing arts, music, literature, and cultural heritage, and reviews films in her free time. She has written online content and viewed audiovisual materials for archiving purposes. Joaquin Singson is a writer and cultural worker from Quezon City. In 2018, he was shortlisted for the Purita Kalaw-Ledesma Prize for Art Criticism and has been published in Heights Ateneo and NANG Magazine. His research and writing is focused on music and art criticism, Cold War and Third World histories, and anti-imperial movements in the Global South. Ligaya Villablanca is a dreamer from Visayas. They have programmed short films for micro-cinemas across Visayan islands, Australia, and the US. It has a hobby of bringing up conversations about regional cinema and how its existence plays a role in the national and worldwide stage. Mac John Bautista is a Mechanical Engineering student at DLSU-Manila. He actively seeks out and frequently attends film events in and out of Metro Manila. He is currently a contributing writer for the Society of Filipino Film Reviewers and the managing director of Kinoise. Maverick "Mavs" Alviar is pursuing his BA in Art Studies with a Minor in Theater and Performance Praxes at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He has interned previously at the UP Vargas Museum, Likhaan Fair, and currently at the Bulwagan ng Dangal University Heritage Museum and Yuchengco Museum.

Poor Things has 11 nominations for tonight's 96th Academy Awards! Ica, Karen and Cess are back for this year's Women's Month edition. And girl, they've got a lot to say about Emma Stone's jaw-dropping *wink wink* controversial performance and what could be an Oscar's sweep for her second tandem with Yorgos Lanthimos. Caution Warning: Spoilers are present in this episode. As of writing, Poor Things has won Best Make-Up and Best Costume. The 96th Academy Awards can be streamed live here. Poor Things is a 2023 film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, known mostly for his shock-value, absurdist films that go for the unconventional narratives. This film is written by Tony McNamara, adapted from the 1992 novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray. It stars Emma Stone (who also co-produces), Margaret Qualley, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott and Jerrod Carmichael. It does feature a kakaibang Emma Stone, in her most daring role yet! Same with Mark Ruffalo who deviates from the good guy to Duncan's, errrrr, well you gotta see it on Disney+ as well. We talk about how the film impacts us as women and the conversations it gathers about our own agencies in sex, careers, and the choices we take in how we live in a less patriarchal society. It's MEAN GIRLS day! Yes, on Wednesdays we wear pink and we launch a new episode about the *iconique* adaptation of the musical version of the OG film that premiered 20 years ago! Join Cess, Karen, and Ica as they talk about what's new, who to look out for, and what stands out in this latest adaptation. TBH we send love and kudos to Tina Fey herself for releasing a fresh new take on her classic work. Mean Girls, 2024 is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. Story by Tina Fey, Nell Benjamin, Rosalind Wiseman. Starring Renee Rapp, Angourie Rice, Auli'l Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika Vandanapu, Christopher Briney, Tina Fey, and even a cameo appearance by Ashley Park (from the musical) and of course, Lindsay Lohan herself. So there's definitely a lot of laughs, a lot of chikkas involved in the outtakes of this episode, and a lot of references on music and some of Prime and Jen's previous films. After a very busy April for us all here at Third World Cinema Club, it's time we release the third of our WOMEN'S MONTH SPECIAL and without bias we present a film from friends of the pod, Dwein Baltazar but in this time, as seen through the eyes of our female guests Karen and Ica and Cess. As her pick for women's month, Cess has discussed the film with the gang before but in this episode she talks about how the women see what Aileen wants them to see as a fellow woman. Spoilers are definitely present in this episode. A few things to think about that are also present in this podcast: The name/word "Ai leen" has a different meaning in Japanese, as Ica says. Is the film how the female gaze should be made? Sino ba ang hindi na LSS sa Ikaw Pa Rin ni Ted Ito? These three definitely were in full LSS mode. Cess, Ica, and Karen are back for Part Two of our Women's Month Special featuring Karen Mae's pick: the ever-changing, ever-so-relevant, ever-so-important HARLEY QUINN in her appearances in film and in the media. The character first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series in September of 1992 (episode titled "Joker's Favor") as Mr. J's mischievous sidekick. Despite her actual name as Dr. Harleen Quinzell, she's mostly known in both the animated series and comics as Harley Quinn, donning a clown costume in red, black and white, and is usually sexualized or depicted as the Joker's love-struck assistant. Flashforward to 2016's Suicide Squad and we find her catapulted into fame, but with that fame comes realizations of how Harley Quinn can evolve into something more relatable than just being a one-dimensional character who can wear decently accessible clothes and still kick ass. Listen to the three talk about Harley Quinn *the character* in the awful Suicide Squad (2016),to how she fully evolves into the right persona in Birds of Prey (2020) and how she sustains her #MeToo-approved story-arch in The Suicide Squad (2021). For this year's Women's Month special, our very own Princess Kinoc has invited two of Philippine pop-culture's female writers: Karen Mae de Vera and Marica Hontiveros-Cheng to talk about three films or topics on Women in Film every week of March. For the first of this series, Ica selects Mad Max: Fury Road as the first film they tackle on feminism and more. Most of the perspectives online about the film were either written by men or seen through the eyes of men. Skylab by Chuck Escasa is about two troubled boys, a satellite falling to the earth, and dark forces threatening the world.  Ampangabagat Nin Talakba Ha Likol tells the story of Maya who is forced to go home to Zambales and confront a house that terrorizes her as frogs rain outside. i get so sad sometimes is about a gay teenager eagerly waiting for a mature man to finally reveal his face after developing an anonymous sexual relationship with him online. MIGHTY ROBO V tells what happens when a documentary crew covering the Philippine Giant Monster Defense Institute's Mighty Robo V program learns that the wrong people were hired for the job. Henry is about a teenager longing for another life when he visits a mansion's construction site to seek compensation for his older brother's work injury. City of Flowers is set in 2013, when the City of Zamboanga is celebrating the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, just before the Zamboanga siege.  It tells the story of a pregnant couple trying to survive a drought wreaking havoc on their flower farm and raising enough money for the childbirth.

It's an adaptation that was said to be unfilmable - but is it true? John, Tristan, and Unreel.ph's Armando dela Cruz tackles Denis Villeneuve's take on Frank Herbert's 1965 classic Dune in this special collaboration. Notes: Spoilers are present for the movie and for some elements of the book as well. Proceed with caution. This is part 1 of a special collaboration with Unreel.ph and the Pervision podcast. A couple months ago, Trese debuted on Netflix. The adaptation of Kajo Baldisimo and Budjette Tan's seminal horror comic was warmly received by local audiences, but was not without its share of critics. Mikhail Red's latest film, Arisaka, is debuting later this month at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
