101: The Thyroid Fix: Why “Normal” Labs Aren’t Enough With Dr. Amie Hornaman
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Amie Hornaman – also known as “The Thyroid Fixer” – a hormone optimization specialist and founder of the Advanced Thyroid and Hormone Clinic. Dr. Amie shares her personal journey of being misdiagnosed by six doctors while experiencing weight gain, fatigue, and hair loss, and how that experience led her to become a leader in functional thyroid care. Together, they explore why so many thyroid patients continue to struggle despite “normal” lab results, and the importance of going beyond TSH to truly optimize thyroid health. From T4/T3 therapy to nutrient deficiencies and hormone imbalances, this episode provides a comprehensive look at what it really takes to feel well again. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why most thyroid patients don’t feel better on T4-only medications. Dr. Amie shares that only a small percentage of people truly thrive on T4 alone, and explains why adding T3 or using alternative therapies can be a game changer for energy, weight, and hair health. How “thyropause” impacts women over 40. Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause can trigger or worsen thyroid dysfunction, creating a cascade of symptoms that are often dismissed as “just aging.” The foundational nutrients your thyroid needs to function. Dr. Amie discusses how key nutrient deficiencies (vitamin D, magnesium, B vitamins, and L-tyrosine) can prevent proper thyroid hormone production and conversion. Why you must address the whole body to heal the thyroid. Dr. Amie explains why focusing on thyroid labs alone isn’t enough – and how hormones, gut health, stress, and metabolism must all be supported together for lasting results. The truth about iodine (and how to use it safely). Iodine can be beneficial when used correctly, but high doses or improper use can backfire. One simple dietary shift that can reduce autoimmune attacks. A gluten-free diet may help lower thyroid antibodies and inflammation by reducing immune system confusion and reactivity in people with Hashimoto’s. 100: The Missing Link to Energy, Thyroid Health, and Cellular Healing With Caroline Alan
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews mineral expert and BEAM Minerals co-founder Caroline Alan to explore the critical role minerals play in energy, thyroid health, and overall wellness. Caroline shares her personal journey through adrenal fatigue, gut issues, and burnout, and how replenishing plant-based minerals helped her recover when other approaches fell short. Together, they discuss why mineral deficiency is so widespread today, how it impacts cellular energy production, and why restoring balance – not just supplementing individual nutrients – is key to healing. They also dive into the role of humic and fulvic minerals in detoxification, hydration, and nutrient absorption. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why mineral deficiency is more common than you think – and why food alone may not be enough. You might be eating a healthy diet and still be missing key minerals. The World Health Organization calls this “hidden hunger.” Discover how to spot the gaps and better support your body. The surprising symptoms of mineral depletion (it’s not just fatigue!). Brain fog, hair loss, gut issues, poor sleep, and even menstrual cramps may all point to low mineral levels. Start connecting the dots behind symptoms that don’t always seem nutrition-related. How minerals power your energy at the cellular level. Caroline explains how minerals fuel mitochondria – the energy generators inside your cells – and why low mineral levels can leave your body unable to produce enough energy to function properly. Why balance matters more than individual supplements. Taking one mineral in isolation isn’t always the solution. Minerals work together, and too much of one can create imbalance. Caroline discusses how to approach supplementation in a balanced way. How plant-based (humic and fulvic) minerals support detoxification and absorption. These unique compounds not only deliver minerals in a highly bioavailable form, but may also help remove toxins like heavy metals and glyphosate from the body. What to expect when replenishing your minerals. Some people may notice improved energy and fewer cravings within days, while deeper issues like hair loss or chronic symptoms may take a few weeks as the body gradually restores balance. 99: Perimenopause & Gut Health: Why Symptoms Spike & What Helps With Cynthia Thurlow
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews nurse practitioner, author, and menopause expert Cynthia Thurlow about what happens to the gut during perimenopause and menopause – and why so many women suddenly experience bloating, constipation, food sensitivities, brain fog, anxiety, and weight-loss resistance in midlife. Cynthia breaks down the hormone-gut-stress connection, explaining how shifts in progesterone and estrogen can influence digestion, immune regulation, and the gut-brain axis. Together, they explore why chronic stress, and unresolved trauma can amplify symptoms, and why the most effective strategies often start with the basics: sleep, hydration, protein, movement, and nervous system support. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why progesterone loss can hit your sleep, mood, and gut motility first. Cynthia explains how early perimenopause often begins with declining progesterone – which can reduce GABA (a calming neurotransmitter) and contribute to anxiety, sleep disruptions, and slower digestive movement. How estrogen shifts can drive bloating, brain fog, joint pain, and immune changes. Estradiol can fluctuate dramatically in perimenopause, and because estrogen is an immune-modulating hormone, shifting levels may influence inflammation, autoimmunity risk, and even leaky gut. The stress → gut → brain loop that keeps women stuck in symptoms. Chronic stress can impair digestion at the most basic level (your body won’t “rest and digest”), disrupt the vagus nerve, and increase inflammatory signals that impact the brain – which can worsen anxiety, depression, and brain fog. Why estrogen “recycling” can make perimenopause symptoms feel amplified. We discuss the estrobiome (gut-driven estrogen processing), beta-glucuronidase, and why constipation, poor detox pathways, and gut dysbiosis can lead to estrogen recirculation – contributing to weight-loss resistance, bloating, and mood changes. The overlooked connection between trauma, stress, and menopause timing. Cynthia shares research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and how chronic stress may influence immune health, metabolic function, and the pace of ovarian aging. The foundational strategies that support gut and hormone health. Before complex protocols, simple interventions – breathwork before meals, sleep prioritization, hydration, walking after eating, and gradually increasing protein and fiber – can significantly improve symptoms. Tune in to learn how to support your gut (and your whole-body health) through the perimenopause-to-menopause transition. 98: Why Your Digestion Sucks Even When You’re Eating Clean – With Hannah Aylward
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews gut health expert Hannah Aylward about why so many people struggle with bloating and other gut issues – even when they’re eating clean. Hannah shares her personal journey with chronic digestive issues and explains how factors like low stomach acid, poor bile flow, gut dysbiosis, and nervous system dysregulation can all contribute to ongoing symptoms. Together, they explore the deeper root causes of digestive dysfunction and why a personalized, root-cause approach is essential for overall healing. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why eating “clean” isn’t always enough to fix digestive issues. Hannah explains how you can follow all the right diets and still have symptoms like bloating, reflux, and constipation, if your digestive system isn’t properly breaking down and absorbing food. The hidden root causes of chronic bloating (it’s not just food!). Low stomach acid, poor bile flow, gut dysbiosis, and infections can all create the perfect environment for bloating – even with a healthy diet. How stress and your nervous system directly impact digestion. Chronic stress shifts your body out of “rest and digest” mode, reducing stomach acid, enzyme production, and gut motility, and making digestion an afterthought. What’s really behind food sensitivities and how to reverse them. Most sensitivities aren’t about the food itself, but about gut imbalances like bacterial overgrowth, histamine issues, or poor digestion. The surprising connection between gut health, hormones, and histamine. Liver function, bile flow, and the gut microbiome all play a role in hormone balance and histamine breakdown – impacting everything from bloating to painful periods. Why most gut healing protocols fail (and what works). Generic protocols often miss the mark. True healing requires personalized testing and a root-cause approach tailored to your unique gut. 97: Food Addiction, Cravings, and the Key to Sustainable Weight Loss – With Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Susan Peirce Thompson, a neuroscientist and bestselling author, about the connection between food addiction and weight issues. They explore why some people struggle to moderate certain foods, how processed foods impact the brain, and what it really takes to achieve sustainable weight loss. Dr. Thompson shares her personal journey from addiction to recovery, along with the science behind dopamine, cravings, and appetite regulation. She also explains how her Bright Line Eating approach compares to GLP-1 medications, and why addressing food addiction may be the missing piece for those with thyroid and autoimmunity who are struggling to maintain a healthy weight. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why food addiction is real and can be harder to break than drugs. Dr. Thompson explains how addiction can transfer from substances to food (and many other things such as work and shopping). She also shares why highly processed foods hijack the same brain pathways, making it incredibly difficult to stop once you start. The role of dopamine in cravings, “food noise,” and loss of control. Highly processed foods, especially sugar and flour, create powerful dopamine spikes that rewire the brain, driving persistent cravings and making normal eating feel unsatisfying. How to tell if it’s food addiction, not just lack of discipline. From constant thoughts about food to feeling powerless once you start eating, Dr. Thompson outlines the key signs that your brain chemistry, not willpower, may be driving your behavior. Why “moderation” doesn’t work for everyone and what to do instead. For some people, having clear, non-negotiable boundaries (“bright lines”) around certain foods can actually create more freedom, reduce cravings, and simplify decisions. How the “Bright Line Eating” method compares to GLP-1 medications. Both approaches target hunger, cravings, and appetite regulation, but the “Bright Line Eating” approach works naturally by improving satiety hormones, reducing dopamine overstimulation, and building sustainable habits. Three identity shifts needed to maintain weight loss long-term. Lasting results aren’t just about food – they require becoming devoted to your plan, building emotional resilience, and allowing yourself to fully move on from the struggle with food and weight. 96: Why “Healthy” Diets Are Making Women Sick (And the Nutrient They’re Missing) – With Dr. Autumn Smith
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Autumn Smith, co-founder of Paleovalley and holistic nutrition expert, about the powerful role of nutrient-dense foods – especially protein and animal products – in supporting thyroid health, mood, and overall well-being. Autumn shares her personal journey from IBS and anxiety to vibrant health, and explains why many “healthy” diets may still leave people undernourished. Together, they explore the importance of amino acids, iron, and glycine, the differences between conventional and grass-fed meat, and how food quality impacts inflammation and energy levels. This episode offers a refreshing, balanced perspective on nutrition and empowers listeners to find what truly works for their bodies. What you’ll learn in this episode: How a “healthy” diet can still leave you undernourished: Autumn shares how her salad-heavy, low-protein diet contributed to IBS, anxiety, and instability, highlighting how common it is for women to miss key nutrients like protein and amino acids, even when eating “clean.” The connection between protein, mood, and mental health: Without adequate protein, your body can’t produce key neurotransmitters, which can contribute to anxiety, brain fog, and fatigue, even when your diet looks balanced on the surface. Why iron deficiency may be the missing link in persistent thyroid symptoms: Low ferritin levels can impact hair growth, energy, and how well your body responds to thyroid medication, yet this is often overlooked in conventional care. Why glycine deserves more attention in modern diets: This often overlooked amino acid plays a key role in sleep quality, inflammation, detoxification, and healthy aging, and many people may not be getting enough from muscle-meat-heavy diets alone. What actually sets grass-fed meat apart from conventional options: Farming practices directly impact nutrient density, omega-3 levels, and inflammatory potential, making food quality an important factor in how your body responds to what you eat. Why food quality matters just as much as food type. Labels like “organic,” “free-range,” and “grass-fed” can be misleading, and understanding what they actually mean can make a big difference in your health outcomes. Tune in to learn more about how nutrient-dense foods can transform your energy, mood, and thyroid health. 95: Hormone Replacement Therapy Myths and Truths With Dr. Anna Garrett
In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews pharmacist and menopause expert Dr. Anna Garrett to unpack the biggest myths – and most misunderstood truths – about menopausal hormone therapy. Together, they explore what hormone therapy looks like today, why many women were unnecessarily frightened after the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study, and how modern options (like transdermal estradiol and micronized progesterone) are changing the conversation. They also discuss why progesterone can be a game-changer for sleep and mood in early perimenopause, why estrogen becomes more important later on, how testosterone supports strength and vitality, and why testing and metabolism pathways (including gut and histamine factors) can influence results. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why the “hormones cause cancer” narrative won’t die despite a flawed WHI study. Dr. Garrett explains how the Women’s Health Initiative used older products (like conjugated equine estrogens and synthetic progestins), and why today’s bioidentical options have a very different risk/benefit profile. She also shares the resource that helped her advocate for herself – even with a strong family history of breast cancer. Progesterone supplementation can be a smart starting point, even for mid-30s hormone chaos. If you’ve suddenly developed insomnia, anxiety, mood swings, or “crime scene periods,” it may be a sign you’re ovulating less frequently (and losing that calming progesterone effect). Dr. Garrett talks about why progesterone alone can be a smart starting point for many women. When progesterone stops working for sleep, this may point to a drop in estrogen. Dr. Garrett shares how low estrogen can become a bigger driver of sleep disruption in late perimenopause/menopause, and why combining estrogen and progesterone can be the “lights back on” moment for some women. Testosterone isn’t a “male hormone” – and dismissing it can cost women strength and vitality. Dr. Garrett shares why testosterone matters for muscle maintenance, bone health, drive, and overall wellbeing… plus why pellets can be risky if you haven’t dialed in your dose. The DUTCH test and hormone pathways: why metabolism matters as much as dosing. Even bioidentical hormones can create unwanted effects. Dr. Garrett walks through tools and nutrients used to support healthier estrogen/testosterone metabolism – and why these tests are best interpreted with a trained practitioner. How to decide if hormone therapy is right for you (without needing a medical degree). They talk candidly about “shared decision-making,” quality of life, clotting risk considerations, transdermal estradiol vs oral estrogen, micronized progesterone, and experimenting with HRT to see if it’s right for you. 94: Beyond TSH: Root-Cause Labs for Hashimoto’s – The Mitochondria Connection With Dr. Sam Shay
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews functional medicine expert Dr. Sam Shay about the critical lab tests that go beyond TSH for people with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism. Dr. Sam shares a pivotal patient story that highlights why “normal” thyroid labs can still leave people suffering – and how a broader, root-cause approach can uncover what’s really driving symptoms. Together, they discuss thyroid panels, gut permeability and gluten triggers, stress hormones and adrenal patterns, estrogen dominance, nutrient deficiencies, genetics, and the often-overlooked role of mitochondria in fatigue, brain fog, and thyroid-like symptoms. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why a “normal” TSH can be misleading – and what a full thyroid panel reveals. Dr. Sam explains how people can have significant thyroid symptoms and autoimmunity even when their TSH is in a “normal” range. He outlines the additional labs that provide a more complete picture of thyroid function, hormone conversion, and immune activity so care is not based on a single number. How gut permeability and gluten can trigger thyroid antibodies (and why it’s a “two-for-one” problem). Intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) can allow food particles or microbial byproducts into the bloodstream, prompting antibodies that may cross-react with thyroid tissue. Gluten is a key factor because it can both increase gut permeability and contribute to immune cross-reactivity. Why chronic stress can suppress thyroid function: Dr. Sam breaks down how HPA axis dysfunction shifts the body into a survival state, which can reduce thyroid activity and slow long-term healing. He also explains how ongoing stress can worsen gut health, creating interconnected challenges. The role of mitochondria in thyroid-related symptoms. Dr. Sam describes mitochondria as the place where thyroid hormones are activated to produce energy. When mitochondrial function is impaired, individuals may experience symptoms of hypothyroidism even when standard thyroid labs appear normal. Key symptoms that may point to mitochondrial dysfunction. The discussion highlights patterns such as persistent fatigue, low exercise tolerance, muscle weakness, brain fog, blood sugar instability, and migraines. Dr. Sam also explains how environmental factors like mold and toxins can significantly impact mitochondrial function. How personalized testing can help identify root causes more effectively. Instead of relying on generalized approaches, Dr. Sam explains how targeted lab testing and genetic insights can guide more precise interventions. This approach helps identify the most impactful changes and can reduce the trial-and-error process often experienced in thyroid care. 93: Trauma, Autoimmunity, and the Emerging Science of Psychedelic Therapy – With Dr. Will Van Derveer
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative psychiatrist Dr. Will Van Derveer about the often-misunderstood field psychedelic-assisted therapy, and how it may be an effective tool for trauma healing and even deeper root cause work. Emphasizing the importance of safety, screening, and in-person clinical support, Dr. Van Derveer discusses the myths and misconceptions about these therapies, how they are very different from recreational drug use, and why they may offer new hope for people dealing with treatment-resistant PTSD depression, and more. Together, they explore how trauma can shape immune function, inflammation, and even autoimmune conditions. They also discuss EMDR, somatic work, spiritual disconnection, mental health stigma, and the nuanced differences between MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine in therapeutic settings. While this field is rapidly evolving, he emphasizes that these therapies are not a DIY solution and can be unpredictable or even destabilizing without proper clinical guidance. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why psychedelic-assisted therapy is not the same as recreational drug use. Dr. Van Derveer explains that these therapies are used in highly specific clinical settings, with careful screening, preparation, dosing, and follow-up. He also shares why trying to replicate these experiences on your own can be risky, unpredictable, and potentially dangerous, highlighting the critical role of trained practitioners in creating a therapeutic (not recreational) environment. How unresolved trauma may become an overlooked root cause in chronic illness. Trauma can affect inflammation, immune function, the HPA-axis, and even autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. This is especially relevant for people with thyroid issues, who may have focused only on the physical side of healing while missing an important emotional piece. Why talk therapy alone may not always be enough. Some people can clearly identify their patterns, understand their trauma intellectually, and still feel stuck. Dr. Van Derveer shares why layered or preverbal trauma may require different approaches, including EMDR, somatic therapies, or psychedelic-assisted therapy, to help people access healing beyond words. The key differences between MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine in therapeutic settings. Each therapy has a distinct mechanism, duration, and use case. Dr. Van Derveer breaks down how MDMA is being studied for PTSD, psilocybin for depression, and ketamine for rapid symptom relief, and why clinical MDMA and psilocybin therapy may offer longer-lasting benefits. Why safety, preparation, and the right practitioner are everything. Dr. Van Derveer explains how improper dosing, lack of preparation, or the wrong environment can overwhelm the nervous system – while skilled guidance can support meaningful and lasting healing. How trauma healing may improve thyroid antibodies and autoimmune flares. While psychedelic-assisted therapy is not a magic bullet, Dr. Van Derveer has observed improvements not only in mental health symptoms, but also in markers like thyroid antibodies and autoimmune flare frequency, reinforcing the deep connection between emotional and immune health. Tune in to learn more about trauma, safety, and the evolving role of psychedelic-assisted therapy in root-cause healing. 92: Bipolar or Thyroid? The Misdiagnosis Costing Women Their Health With Sara Russell
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with Sara Russell, PhD, FNTP, a functional nutritional therapy practitioner specializing in women’s mental health and perinatal lab interpretation. Together, they explore the often-missed connections between bipolar symptoms, thyroid dysfunction and autoimmunity, gluten-related disorders (including serum-negative celiac), medication side effects, and postpartum mental health risks. They also discuss why many patients aren’t properly monitored when prescribed medications like lithium, how blood sugar instability can amplify anxiety and immune activation, and what key labs can help uncover root causes – especially during preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum, when “normal” reference ranges can shift dramatically. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why bipolar symptoms can sometimes point to an underlying thyroid issue. Sara explains how hypo- and hyperthyroidism can mimic depression, mania, anxiety, and even psychosis – and why skipping a full thyroid panel (including antibodies) can lead to years of misdiagnosis or mistreatment. The overlooked triad: thyroid autoimmunity, gluten-related disorders, and psychiatric symptoms. We discuss how celiac disease (including serum-negative celiac) can fly under the radar, how gluten exposure has been linked to neuropsychiatric symptoms in some cases, and why “negative antibodies” don’t always mean “not celiac.” How the “gluten-free junk food” trap can backfire – especially for mood and antibodies. Dr. Wentz shares her own experience of feeling better off gluten… yet more anxious when her blood sugar swings got worse. We’ll unpack why blood sugar balance can be a game-changer for calm, stable energy, and better immune resilience. Why lithium requires closer monitoring than many patients receive. Why lithium requires thyroid and kidney monitoring (and why it often doesn’t happen), the “prescribing cascade,” and how one missed lab can snowball into multiple medications and side effects. The postpartum “gray zone”: bipolar vs postpartum thyroiditis vs autoimmune shifts. Sara shares why postpartum psychosis risk skyrockets in people with bipolar disorder, and why postpartum thyroid changes can muddy the clinical picture – making screening and lab literacy critical in pregnancy and postpartum. Preconception + pregnancy labs aren’t “one-size-fits-all.” Sara explains how pregnancy changes kidney filtration, thyroid physiology, and reference ranges for many markers, and why interpreting labs by trimester (and postpartum) can prevent unnecessary panic and missed issues. Tune in to learn how to advocate for the right labs, the right monitoring, and the right root-cause approach, especially when mental health symptoms may actually be driven by thyroid, immune, or metabolic imbalances. 91: Can We Reverse Food Sensitivities? - Hot Take
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz explores a surprising perspective on food sensitivities – and why eliminating foods may not actually solve the root problem. While elimination diets can provide short-term relief for symptoms like bloating, migraines, IBS, and fatigue, Dr. Wentz explains that reacting to multiple foods is often a sign of deeper issues such as gut infections, digestive enzyme deficiencies, microbial imbalances, and intestinal permeability. She shares insights from her own healing journey and outlines the hidden root causes that can drive food sensitivities. Dr. Wentz also walks through common categories of food reactions – including histamine intolerance, sulfur sensitivity, oxalate issues, and FODMAP reactions – and explains how addressing the underlying gut imbalances can often restore tolerance to many foods. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why food sensitivities are often a symptom – not the root cause – of chronic illness. While elimination diets can temporarily reduce symptoms, reacting to dozens of foods is usually a sign of deeper issues like intestinal permeability, gut infections, or immune dysregulation rather than the foods themselves. How gut infections like Blastocystis hominis can drive food reactions and IBS symptoms. This common protozoal infection may be present in up to 73 percent of people with IBS (according to various studies) and can trigger sensitivities to foods like sugar, wheat, dairy, and fruit until the infection is properly treated. The hidden digestive deficiencies that can make healthy foods feel intolerable. Issues like low pancreatic enzymes, bile acid deficiencies, or poor fat digestion can lead to symptoms after eating fatty foods and may indicate the need for digestive support rather than eliminating those foods entirely. Why reactions to sulfur foods, histamine foods, or FODMAPs often signal metabolic or gut imbalances. Sensitivities to foods like garlic, onions, fermented foods, or cruciferous vegetables may indicate nutrient deficiencies or microbial overgrowth rather than true intolerance. How oxalate and salicylate sensitivities can develop – and what actually resolves them. These reactions are frequently linked to issues like mold exposure, Candida overgrowth, or nutrient deficiencies, rather than the foods themselves. The supplements and gut-support strategies that can help restore food tolerance. Supporting digestive enzymes, microbial balance, intestinal lining repair, and nutrient status can help many people gradually reintroduce foods they once reacted to. Tune in to learn how addressing the root causes of gut dysfunction may help you expand your diet and restore your health. 90: Getting to the Root Cause of IBS With Dr. Izabella Wentz
In this solo episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz explains why IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) is often a “wastebasket diagnosis” – a label based on symptoms, not causes. Drawing from her personal healing journey and years of clinical experience, she breaks down why most IBS cases have identifiable, treatable root causes, and how a functional medicine approach can lead to lasting resolution. Dr. Wentz also introduces her new book, IBS: Finding and Treating the Root Cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, a comprehensive guide to uncovering what’s really driving digestive symptoms and addressing them at the source. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, not a root cause: IBS is diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria based on symptoms alone, without identifying what is driving them. Research suggests that up to 98% of people labeled with IBS have a treatable underlying cause. When you investigate the why behind symptoms, healing becomes possible. The conditions that are commonly mislabeled as IBS: SIBO, bile acid malabsorption, pancreatic insufficiency, celiac disease, carbohydrate intolerances, infections, and even inflammatory bowel disease can all present as IBS. Each requires a different treatment approach, which is why proper identification matters. Why the low FODMAP diet is not a long-term solution: Although it may temporarily reduce bloating and discomfort, the low FODMAP diet does not address the underlying cause. Long-term restriction may even reduce microbial diversity and worsen gut health if deeper imbalances are not corrected. How medications can contribute to digestive symptoms: Proton pump inhibitors, pain relievers, and certain drospirenone-containing birth control pills can alter stomach acid, gut motility, and microbial balance. Medication side effects are often an overlooked contributor to IBS symptoms. The nutrient deficiencies and infections that drive symptoms: Low magnesium, glutamine, zinc, vitamin D, thiamine, and carnitine can impair digestive function. Pathogens such as Blastocystis hominis and Giardia are also frequently found in people with IBS and may resolve symptoms when properly treated. Why IBS can precede autoimmune disease: Gut dysfunction can appear 5 to 15 years before a diagnosis such as Hashimoto’s. Addressing IBS early may help calm immune imbalance and reduce the risk of progression. Tune in to learn how to uncover the true cause of your IBS symptoms and take control of your healing journey. 89: Hemochromatosis & Iron Overload: The Silent Epidemic Eluding Doctors With Dr. Christy Sutton
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Christy Sutton about iron overload (hemochromatosis) – an underdiagnosed condition that can contribute to fatigue, pain, mood changes, elevated liver enzymes, blood sugar dysregulation, gut issues, hormone imbalances, and even thyroid dysfunction. Dr. Sutton explains why many people don’t get properly evaluated, how to interpret key iron markers like transferrin/iron saturation alongside ferritin, and the “carrier myth” that can prevent people from getting monitored and treated. She also shares practical strategies that may support healthier iron levels, from therapeutic phlebotomy to diet and targeted nutrients. Iron overload is incredibly problematic, but so is iron deficiency (low ferritin), which is very common in people with Hashimoto’s. While this episode focuses on excess iron, it’s important to understand that both extremes can contribute to fatigue, hair loss, brain fog, mood changes, and poor thyroid hormone conversion. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why “high ferritin” shouldn’t automatically be brushed off as “just inflammation.” Ferritin can rise with inflammation, but when it is paired with high iron saturation, it may signal true iron overload. Dr. Sutton explains how reviewing a full iron panel, especially transferrin and iron saturation, helps distinguish between inflammation-driven ferritin and excess iron so patients know whether to calm inflammation, remove iron, or both. The symptom “grab bag” that can point to iron overload. Dr. Sutton walks through how excess iron can affect the liver (fatigue, elevated enzymes), pancreas (insulin resistance/diabetes), brain (brain fog, mood changes), joints (pain), hormones (fertility issues), and gut (IBD/IBS and infections that thrive on iron). The simple labs that can catch this early (and why many people still don’t get them). A basic iron panel that includes TIBC or UIBC, serum iron, and iron saturation, along with ferritin and a CBC, is often enough to identify a problem. These tests are inexpensive and accessible, yet frequently overlooked. Dr. Sutton explains why iron saturation above 45 percent with elevated ferritin is an important warning sign. Why women may “fly under the radar” until perimenopause/menopause. Menstruation and pregnancy naturally lower iron stores, which can mask iron overload. Once bleeding stops, iron levels can quietly rise, especially in women with genetic risk. Ongoing monitoring is important (for both women and men). The “carrier myth” can delay diagnosis. Being told someone is “just a carrier” of a hemochromatosis gene does not mean they are protected. Even one gene can increase risk, and iron overload can develop without classic genetics. Dr. Sutton explains how this misunderstanding can delay diagnosis and treatment. How to support iron overload beyond blood donation. Therapeutic phlebotomy is only one of many strategies for lowering excess iron. Dr. Sutton discusses dietary adjustments, nutrients that reduce iron absorption such as quercetin and berberine, and iron chelators such as curcumin and alpha-lipoic acid that may help remove iron from tissues and reduce oxidative stress. 88: The Future of Longevity: How Science is Redefining Human Healthspan with Dr. Darshan Shah
In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Darshan Shah – physician, former surgeon, and Founder/CEO of Next Health – about the future of longevity and how science is redefining human health span. Dr. Shah shares how he reversed his own metabolic and autoimmune issues, why “health span” matters more than simply living longer, and how to prioritize lifestyle foundations before exploring advanced longevity interventions like peptides, regenerative therapies, and plasma exchange. What you’ll learn in this episode: Longevity is really about health span (not just life span). Dr. Shah explains why the next decade is likely to bring major improvements in how long we can stay vibrant – with stable blood sugar, good sleep, strength, and mental clarity – rather than simply “adding years.” The four lifestyle pillars that move the needle most. Instead of chasing every trend, Dr. Shah focuses on nutrition/metabolic health, movement/exercise, sleep/recovery, and stress/emotional regulation. When these are dialed in, everything else works better – including supplements, hormones, and advanced therapies. Why metabolic health is the foundation for almost everything. Blood sugar dysregulation isn’t just about diabetes – it impacts cardiovascular health, brain health, infection risk, inflammation, and even cancer risk. Dr. Shah shares how to measure metabolic health (fasting insulin, A1C, CGMs), and why your mirror can’t tell you the whole story. Sleep tracking can reveal issues years before they become diagnoses. Many people think they sleep “fine,” but their data shows minimal deep sleep and frequent wakeups. Dr. Shah shares simple high-impact strategies (like consistent bedtime, phone out of the bedroom, and sauna), and Dr. Wentz shares how she’s used tracking to discover what promotes deep sleep. Peptides, stem cells, and regenerative medicine are exciting, but timing matters. Dr. Shah discusses peptides like GLP-1s (which may support immune regulation beyond weight loss), immune-supportive peptides, and collagen-support tools, plus stem cells, exosomes, and what may be coming next in regenerative science. A true “longevity clinic” should help you get healthy first – not just sell biohacks. Dr. Shah breaks down Next Health’s four-part approach: lifestyle optimization, functional medicine root-cause work, prevention/early detection, and then longevity interventions. It’s about becoming the boss of your biology – guided by data. Tune in to learn more about boosting your health span, tracking key biomarkers, and choosing longevity tools wisely. 87: Weaponized Empathy: Why “Nice” Girls Get Sick in Trauma Bond Relationships | Dr. Nadine Macaluso
In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews trauma therapist Dr. Nadine Macaluso (“Dr. Nae”), the real-life inspiration behind Naomi Belfort's character in the movie The Wolf of Wall Street. Her personal story led her to dedicate her work to helping people break free from trauma bonds and reclaim their health and identity. Together, they explore how relational trauma can impact the stress response and inflammation, why empathetic “healer” personalities may be more vulnerable to predatory partners, and what it takes to leave safely and rebuild after a toxic, controlling relationship. What you’ll learn in this episode: What a trauma bond actually is (and what it isn’t). A trauma bond isn’t “bonding over shared trauma” – it’s a toxic, emotionally attached relationship where one partner seeks power and control and the other loses autonomy. Dr. Nae explains how these bonds can exist between romantic partners, friends, bosses, and even within families. Why “empaths and healers” are often targeted – and why it’s not your fault. Many women in trauma bonds score high in agreeableness and conscientiousness: empathy, loyalty, strong morals, and the willingness to work things through. In an unhealthy dynamic, those strengths get weaponized – and the victim often gets blamed (including by herself). The “Romeo mask” vs. “Dirty John” behavior pattern. Dr. Nae breaks down intermittent reinforcement: the cycle where a partner is cruel and controlling much of the time, then returns to being charming and loving just enough to reignite hope. That “hope hook” keeps people stuck far longer than they ever expected. Red flags that aren’t romantic, but controlling. Jealousy framed as “love,” constant tracking/texting, broken promises, boundary-pushing, and “all my exes are crazy” stories can be early warning signs. If it feels too good to be true, Dr. Nae shares why it often is. How to leave safely (without tipping your hand). Leaving can be the most dangerous time. Dr. Nae explains why planning matters, emphasizing the need for securing documents, money, credit, legal support, and trauma-informed care behind the scenes while acting normal – then making a safe exit. What healing looks like after you leave. Getting out is a relief, but it can also bring grief, C-PTSD symptoms, anxiety, depression, and physical inflammation from prolonged stress. Dr. Nae shares why real recovery includes turning the mirror back toward yourself, with nervous system regulation, attachment healing, and identity rebuilding. Tune in to learn more about trauma bonds, relational safety, and the healing path back to yourself. 86: The Inflammation Equation: Data-Driven Healing With Dr. Tom O’Bryan
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews functional medicine pioneer Dr. Tom O’Bryan to explore why chronic inflammation is the root mechanism behind most autoimmune and degenerative diseases, including Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Together, they unpack how immune activation is driven by factors like gluten sensitivity, environmental toxins, mold exposure, gut permeability, and endotoxins – often long before symptoms appear. Dr. O’Bryan explains why suppressing inflammation without addressing these triggers can stall healing, and how modern testing can uncover the hidden drivers that conventional labs miss. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why inflammation isn’t the root cause – it’s the root mechanism. Dr. Tom explains why chronic inflammation is the common denominator behind 14 of the 15 leading causes of death, and why the real question isn’t how to suppress inflammation, but what your immune system is trying to protect you from. The surprising reason gluten affects nearly 87% of people with Hashimoto’s. Even without digestive symptoms, gluten can drive autoimmune thyroid inflammation. One exposure can elevate antibodies for months, which is why “cheat days” can quietly undo progress. How toxins silently erode immune tolerance, starting before birth. We discuss how glyphosate, phthalates, mold, and other environmental toxins can impair fertility, brain development, and immune balance, even in people living seemingly “clean” lifestyles. Why outdated lab tests miss the real drivers of autoimmunity. Dr. Tom shares how newer silicone chip–based testing has dramatically improved accuracy – revealing food sensitivities, endotoxins, brain inflammation, and toxic burden that conventional tests often miss. Why healing works best when you remove obstacles one at a time. Instead of overwhelm, Dr. Tom recommends a simple approach: identify your biggest immune triggers, then address them gradually – one hour per week – to create sustainable, long-term healing. Tune in to learn how removing immune triggers – not suppressing symptoms – can transform long-term health. 85: Small Habits, Big Healing: 8 Daily Rituals for Thyroid Thrivers with Ginny Mahar
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews functional medicine health coach and Hypothyroid Chef founder Ginny Mahar about creating sustainable daily rituals for thyroid health. Drawing from her personal Hashimoto’s journey and professional culinary background, Ginny shares how food, lifestyle, and mindset work together to support healing – without overwhelming patients or requiring perfection.' Together, they explore the thyroid trifecta of care, the Eight Daily Rituals of Thyroid-Healthy Living, and how nutrition, gut health, sleep, stress management, and movement all influence thyroid hormone function. Ginny also debunks common myths around goitrogenic foods and explains how thyroid-friendly eating can be personalized, nourishing, and enjoyable. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why medication alone rarely resolves thyroid symptoms. Ginny explains the “thyroid trifecta” – medical care, nutrition, and lifestyle – and why relying on TSH and levothyroxine alone often leaves patients stuck with fatigue, brain fog, and inflammation. The eight daily rituals that support sustainable thyroid healing. From sleep and stress management to movement, detox support, and nourishment, Ginny walks through her “Eight R’s” framework and explains how small daily habits compound into real, lasting change. How to approach thyroid-friendly eating without overwhelm. Ginny shares how anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense eating can be made easy, why personalization matters more than perfection, and how elimination and reintroduction diets can be used as tools (not life sentences). Why gut health plays such a central role in thyroid function. Because thyroid conditions increase the risk of gut issues, impaired nutrient absorption, and medication malabsorption, daily gut support is a cornerstone of healing. The truth about goitrogenic foods and common thyroid myths. Ginny breaks down why cruciferous vegetables are often misunderstood, when they might be problematic, and how cooking, quantity, and iodine status change the conversation entirely. How food can be both medicine and joy. Healing doesn’t require bland meals or culinary misery. Ginny shares how flavor, pleasure, and connection in the kitchen actually support consistency and long-term success. Tune in to learn how small, daily choices can lead to lasting thyroid healing. 84: Carnivore Approach: Less Plants More Healing for Hashimoto’s? With Caitlin Weeks
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews nutrition consultant and educator Caitlin Weeks about how a carnivore-style diet helped put her Hashimoto’s into remission after years of fatigue, digestive issues, and so-called “normal” thyroid labs. Together, they explore why some people with autoimmune thyroid disease feel worse on plant-heavy diets, how anti-nutrients and gut irritation can drive symptoms, and why personalized nutrition – not one-size-fits-all advice – is essential for healing. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why a carnivore-type diet can act as a powerful reset for Hashimoto’s: Caitlin shares how removing plant foods (and eating meat) helped calm gut irritation, bloating, and constipation and coincided with her thyroid antibodies dropping from the 600s into single digits. How “normal” thyroid labs can mean undiagnosed autoimmune disease: Caitlin explains why she was dismissed for years due to a normal TSH, and how testing thyroid antibodies was the key to finally identifying and addressing Hashimoto’s. The link between vegetables, anti-nutrients, and gut inflammation: This conversation explores how compounds in veggies, such as oxalates and lectins, may aggravate gut inflammation, bloating, and pain in sensitive individuals, particularly those with autoimmune conditions. Why diet alone is not enough for healing: From shifting away from punishing exercise to addressing stress, toxic environments, and self-expectation, Caitlin explains the non-diet lifestyle changes that supported true recovery. Who may benefit most from trying the carnivore diet, and who should proceed cautiously: Digestive issues, IBS, bloating, histamine intolerance, and stubborn thyroid antibodies may all be clues that the carnivore diet could help – but preparation, personalization, and context matter. Tune in to learn whether less plants and more nutrient-dense foods could be the missing piece in your Hashimoto’s healing journey. 83: The Gut-Autoimmune Connection: Breaking the Cycle of Leaky Gut & Chronic Illness | Dr. Vincent Pedre
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews functional medicine physician Dr. Vincent Pedre about the hidden root causes of IBS, gut inflammation, and chronic digestive symptoms that often precede autoimmune disease. Together, they explore how stress physiology, nervous system dysregulation, environmental toxins, mold exposure, microplastics, and mitochondrial dysfunction can damage the gut – even in people who are already gluten-free and eating “clean.” Dr. Pedre also debunks common myths about coffee and gut health, sharing how high-quality, clean coffee can be enjoyed without triggering reflux or inflammation. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why IBS is often the first warning sign of deeper immune dysfunction. Dr. Pedre explains how years of gut inflammation can dysregulate the immune system, increase intestinal permeability, and eventually contribute to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s – long before labs reveal antibodies. How stress and nervous system dysregulation quietly sabotage digestion – even when you feel “fine.” Chronic stress suppresses vagal tone, lowers stomach acid and enzyme production, and slows gut motility. Your body always tells the truth. The hidden gut disruptors most people never test for. Mold exposure, parasites, yeast overgrowth, microplastics, and environmental toxins can damage the gut lining and microbiome, even without classic digestive symptoms. Why elimination diets don’t always lead to true healing. Removing foods can reduce symptoms, but true healing often requires repairing the gut barrier, addressing toxin load, supporting mitochondria, and calming the nervous system. The truth about coffee, gut health, and thyroid symptoms. Coffee itself isn’t the enemy – poor-quality beans, mold contamination, pesticides, over-roasting, and plastic exposure are. Dr. Pedre shares information on coffee that is cleaner and gentler on the gut. How targeted therapies can dramatically speed gut healing. Dr. Pedre shares how phospholipids, peptides, sauna therapy, and mitochondrial testing are helping patients tolerate foods again – often in months instead of years. Tune in to learn how to heal your gut at the root – and reclaim your health. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! Ep82: Finally Hopeful: A Whole-Body Plan to Fix the Root Causes of Your Depression | Dr. James Greenblatt
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative psychiatrist Dr. James Greenblatt about a whole-body, root-cause approach to depression. They discuss why many people don’t fully improve on medications alone, the lab work most clinicians skip (vitamin D, B12, ferritin, full thyroid panel), and how digestion, amino acids, omega-3s, hormones, and environmental factors (gluten/celiac, mycotoxins, infections) shape mood. They also clarify nutritional lithium (lithium orotate) versus prescription lithium, how to approach thyroid-aware monitoring, and why very low total cholesterol is a red flag in stubborn depression and suicidality. Listeners will walk away with practical labs, supplement considerations, and a step-wise framework that can complement therapy and medication. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why depression isn’t a “Prozac deficiency.” Modern research has moved beyond a single-neurotransmitter theory, and depression can stem from many biological drivers: nutrient gaps, hormone shifts, gut issues, toxins, infections, and genetics. Addressing these foundations often makes therapy and medications work better, and sometimes reduces the need for them. The lab work most people never get (but should). They walk through vitamin D, B12, iron/ferritin, and a full thyroid panel as accessible first steps, then expand to amino acids, fatty acids, copper/zinc balance, celiac screening, and targeted functional tests. Optimal, not just “normal,” ranges matter, especially for B12 and vitamin D. Digestion is destiny for neurotransmitters. You can eat protein all day, but low stomach acid and weak digestive enzymes mean you won’t liberate the amino acids needed to make serotonin, dopamine, and more. Correcting HCl and enzyme deficits can lift mood by restoring raw materials, particularly in those with reflux, thyroid issues, or trauma histories that push the nervous system out of “rest-and-digest.” The quiet saboteurs: gluten, mycotoxins, infections, and very low cholesterol. Celiac disease/gluten intolerance can drive global malabsorption – along with anxiety, depression, and even eating-disorder patterns. Mold/mycotoxins and post-infectious syndromes (PANS/PANDAS, Lyme, post-viral) can inflame the brain. And very low total cholesterol (often genetic) correlates with depression and higher suicide risk. Nutritional lithium, clarified. Lithium orotate (low-dose “nutritional lithium”) is different from high-dose lithium carbonate. At low milligram doses, it has been utilized for mood stability and even dementia risk reduction in emerging research. For thyroid health, it is important to monitor labs, personalize dosing, and distinguish carefully from prescription lithium, as dose and monitoring make the difference. Medications: a both/and approach. Antidepressants can be appropriate and lifesaving for some; others can successfully taper when foundations are optimized. The aim is personalization: start with biology (labs, nutrients, digestion), layer therapy and meds as needed, and keep revisiting root causes as you heal. 81: Is It Your Thyroid or Are You Going Crazy? – With Dr. Izabella Wentz
In this solo episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz explores the often-overlooked connection between thyroid dysfunction and mental health. Drawing from both clinical experience and her own personal journey with Hashimoto’s, Dr. Wentz explains how symptoms like anxiety, depression, panic attacks, OCD, and mood instability can be rooted in thyroid autoimmunity – even when standard thyroid labs appear “normal.” Listeners will learn why relying solely on TSH testing can miss critical clues, how thyroid antibodies can directly affect brain function, and why nutrient deficiencies, poor T4-to-T3 conversion, and blood sugar instability can all contribute to emotional distress. This episode offers a compassionate, root-cause-focused perspective for anyone who has felt dismissed or misdiagnosed on their healing journey. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why mental health symptoms are often misdiagnosed when thyroid labs look “normal.” Many doctors rely solely on TSH testing, which can remain in range for years even while autoimmune thyroid antibodies are actively attacking the thyroid and affecting brain chemistry, mood, and cognition. How Hashimoto’s antibodies can directly impact the brain. Elevated thyroid antibodies have been linked to anxiety, depression, OCD, panic attacks, and even more severe conditions like Hashimoto’s encephalopathy, where immune activity interferes with neurological function. The thyroid–mood rollercoaster many patients experience. Early-stage Hashimoto’s can cause alternating hyperthyroid and hypothyroid symptoms, leading to cycles of anxiety followed by depression, fatigue, and emotional instability that can feel confusing and frightening. Why T3 is critical for mental health – not just T4. Even when taking thyroid medication, poor conversion of T4 to active T3 can leave the brain under-fueled, contributing to persistent depression, brain fog, and lack of motivation. The overlooked nutrient deficiencies that can mimic or worsen mental health conditions. Low ferritin (iron storage), vitamin D deficiency, methylation issues (like MTHFR), selenium deficiency, and blood sugar instability can all profoundly affect mood and should be evaluated alongside thyroid health. Tune in to learn how supporting your thyroid can transform not only your physical health, but your emotional well-being, too. 80: Escaping Thyroid Purgatory: Adaptive Physiology & Thyroid Regeneration – With Dr. Eric Balcavage
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Eric Balcavage, co-author of The Thyroid Debacle and host of the Thyroid Answers Podcast, about seeing thyroid disorders through the lens of adaptive physiology. Dr. Balcavage explains how the cell danger response, mitochondrial stress, and chronic inflammation, can drive a deliberate downshift in thyroid function – even when TSH and T4 levels appear “normal.” Together, they explore the limitations of both conventional endocrinology and “greenwashed” functional medicine, dig into hot topics like T3 therapy, ferritin, vitamin D, and TSH ranges, and discuss why mindset, relationships, and emotional stress can be just as important as lab work in restoring true thyroid homeostasis. Listeners will walk away with a richer understanding of why they still feel unwell despite treatment, and a more hopeful roadmap for moving out of survival mode and into healing. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why your thyroid may not be “broken” – it may be adapting. Dr. Balcavage explains how the cell danger response and mitochondrial stress can trigger a protective downshift in thyroid hormone conversion, where the body is trying to protect itself from danger, such as an infection, toxins, or emotional trauma. This shift reframes thyroid disease from “self-attack” to an intelligent (but uncomfortable) survival strategy. Why you may be stuck in “thyroid purgatory.” Dr. Balcavage and Dr. Wentz discuss the pitfalls of conventional endocrinology (TSH-only, medication-for-life) and “green allopathy” (using different hormones or supplements solely to normalize labs). When we’re searching for the “perfect” T3, reverse T3, or TSH level, we often miss the real driver: cell stress and inflammation. Why more T3 isn’t always better, and when it may backfire. Dr. Balcavage breaks down the main reasons T4-to-T3 conversion goes down (inflammation, stress, excess T4, and genetics), and why simply adding more T3 can increase oxidative stress, suppress natural hormone production, and even blunt immune surveillance in some people. Instead, he encourages us to ask why T3 is low and address the underlying triggers first. The hidden role of mindset, relationships, and finances in thyroid recovery. Dr. Balcavage and Dr. Wentz explore how emotional turmoil like chronic fear, resentment, relationship stress, and money worries wind up the limbic system, keep the body in fight-or-flight, and shut down gut, reproductive, and thyroid physiology. Dr. Balcavage shares real-life stories of clients whose symptoms improved dramatically when they shifted how they viewed their circumstances – even before changing labs or supplements. How Dr. Balcavage’s “fitness factors” create a roadmap back to homeostasis. Dr. Balcavage evaluates 18 “fitness factors” – including sleep, breathing, emotional fitness, relationship health, habitual routines, and metabolic fitness – to identify the biggest stressors keeping the body in a stressed state. Addressing these systematically allows thyroid physiology to normalize, sometimes even allowing for dose reductions or gland recovery. Why TSH “optimal ranges,” ferritin goals, and vitamin D obsession can be misleading. Dr. Balcavage and Dr. Wentz discuss whether a TSH above 2 is always bad, if low ferritin always means iron deficiency, why 25-OH vitamin D isn’t the whole story, and whether Hashimoto’s can exist without antibodies. 79: How Vision Therapy Can Fix Brain Fog, Dizziness, Dyslexia & Even ADHD | Dr. Bryce Appelbaum
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews neuro-optometrist Dr. Bryce Appelbaum about one of the most overlooked drivers of chronic health issues: our vision. Not just how clearly we see, but how our brain interprets visual input. Dr. Appelbaum explains that vision problems often masquerade as ADHD, anxiety, dizziness, and reading struggles, and that retraining the brain through targeted vision therapy can dramatically reduce symptoms. They explore the effect of screen time on the visual system, the shocking number of children misdiagnosed with learning disorders, and how even adults can regain focus, clarity, and spatial orientation. You’ll also learn simple exercises to improve your visual health today, without glasses or surgery. What you’ll learn in this episode: Vision is about brain function, not just eyesight: Vision is a complex brain-driven process involving focus, depth perception, spatial awareness, emotional regulation, and how our eyes coordinate and track. You can have “perfect” 20/20 eyesight yet still experience major visual processing issues that affect learning, attention, movement, and confidence. Functional vision problems can mimic ADHD, anxiety, dyslexia, or clumsiness: Difficulty reading, letter reversals, poor handwriting, focusing challenges, motion sensitivity, or behavioral issues may actually reflect an eye–brain coordination problem. Many children – and adults – are misdiagnosed because standard eye exams only measure clarity, not function. Vision therapy can rewire the brain and resolve symptoms at any age: Vision therapy is like physical therapy for the brain through the eyes. Using targeted, evidence-based exercises, it can strengthen eye coordination, focus, tracking, depth perception, and neural pathways. This helps treat issues related to concussions, dizziness, vertigo, visual intolerance, anxiety in busy environments, driving fears, and more. Screens are reshaping our visual system – and not in a good way: The average adult now spends 7+ hours a day on screens, while many children spend 6+ hours. This strains the visual system, narrows peripheral awareness, reduces blinking, disrupts circadian rhythms, and alters how our brains process information. Dr. Appelbaum shares simple habits – including the 20-20-20 rule and blinking breaks – to prevent visual stress. Simple daily exercises can improve focus, flexibility, and visual comfort: Activities like “eye push-ups,” peripheral awareness training, and eye stretches help strengthen the eye–brain connection and reduce headaches, eye strain, and reading fatigue. These exercises are accessible at any age and can delay or reduce the need for reading glasses. Floaters, headaches, and visual overwhelm may be vision-related – and treatable: Symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, light sensitivity, panic while driving, difficulty with stairs, or overwhelm in grocery stores and crowded environments often have a visual processing root cause. Dr. Appelbaum explains how addressing these issues through functional vision care can restore clarity, comfort, and confidence. 78: Transdermal Supplements: A Breakthrough for Chronic Illness and Gut Issues With Alexandra Karpova
In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews researcher and Clarisen (formerly Science Mama’s HQ) co-founder Alexandra Karpova, whose personal health challenges – and her children’s struggles with mast cell activation, thyroid symptoms, chronic fatigue, and sensory issues – led her to discover the critical role of functional nutrient deficiencies in chronic illness. Alexandra shares her research on how impaired metabolic pathways, detoxification issues, childhood nutrient depletion, environmental triggers, and poor nutrient activation can create symptoms of thyroid dysfunction even when lab tests look normal. Together, they explore the surprising connections between riboflavin, sulfation pathways, histamine intolerance, autism spectrum symptoms, mitochondrial health, and thyroid metabolism. Alexandra also discusses the emerging science behind transdermal nutrient delivery, which may offer new solutions for children and adults who can’t tolerate or absorb oral supplements. What you’ll learn in this episode: Many thyroid symptoms come from deeper metabolic issues, not just the thyroid itself. Alexandra explains how impaired detoxification (like sulfation or glucuronidation), mitochondrial dysfunction, or functional nutrient deficiencies can mimic hypothyroidism – even when lab tests appear normal. These hidden blocks may lead to fatigue, temperature swings, mood changes, and sensory symptoms in both adults and children. Functional nutrient deficiencies often don’t appear on standard blood tests. Alexandra shares how nutrients such as B2, B6, iodine, selenium, and molybdenum may be present in the bloodstream but not utilized well by cells due to poor gut function, low stomach acid, inflammation, or impaired liver pathways. This helps explain why symptoms persist despite “normal labs.” Children with autism, sensory issues, or mast cell activation may have underlying metabolic disruptions. Alexandra’s story highlights how addressing nutrient imbalances, gut health, and thyroid hormone activation can support dramatic improvements in sleep, sensory processing, allergic reactions, and social and cognitive development. Topical (transdermal) nutrients may be game-changing for kids and adults with poor gut absorption. Alexandra describes how transdermal B2, iodine, and selenium bypass gut inflammation and low stomach acid, leading to faster improvements in energy, mood, and metabolic stability – especially for children who struggle with oral supplements. Histamine intolerance, anxiety, eczema, and food reactions often have biochemical root causes. B2-dependent enzymes (like DAO), infections (like H. pylori), mold, poor detox pathways, and nutrient deficiencies can drive histamine overload. Supporting these pathways can dramatically reduce symptoms like anxiety, sensory overload, and skin symptoms. There is hope – and simple, targeted strategies can improve complex chronic symptoms. Alexandra outlines small, consistent changes parents can make to reduce overwhelm, support metabolism, and gradually rebuild health in themselves and their children. Tune in to learn more about how nutrition, biochemistry, and metabolic support can transform thyroid health for both children and adults. 77: Beautiful Hair & Skin from Within: A Hormone-Focused Approach With Dr. Trevor Cates
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Trevor Cates – author, naturopathic doctor, and founder of The Spa Dr. skincare and supplement line – about the intimate links between hormones, skin, and hair. Together, they explore how perimenopause, thyroid dysfunction, and toxic skincare products affect women’s health inside and out. Listeners will gain insight into the role of bioidentical hormones, clean skincare, nutrient-rich foods, and targeted supplements in promoting healthy aging. Dr. Cates also shares her clinical experience with hair loss, the importance of addressing root causes, and how natural approaches can bring harmony back to the body. What you’ll learn in this episode: Perimenopause reveals hidden imbalances. Symptoms like insomnia, night sweats, palpitations, and anxiety can feel overwhelming, but they are signs of underlying root causes – like gut dysbiosis or nutritional deficiencies – that often resurface during this time of transition. Hormones and skin are deeply connected. Fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and cortisol can cause acne, premature aging, and sagging skin. Instead of masking symptoms, Dr. Cates emphasizes root-cause healing through nutrition, stress reduction, and hormone balance. Skincare toxins can disrupt hormones. Many conventional products contain endocrine disruptors that are absorbed through the skin and contribute to estrogen dominance, thyroid dysfunction, and other imbalances. Choosing clean, pH-balanced, and microbiome-friendly products is key. Hair loss isn’t just about the thyroid. While hypothyroidism is a common cause, other root triggers include low ferritin, high DHT, stress, medications, and infections. Addressing these drivers while supporting hair externally can promote regrowth and resilience. Inside-out and outside-in approaches create lasting beauty. Anti-inflammatory foods, antioxidants, collagen, and gut health practices work synergistically with topical skincare and haircare products to maintain healthy, glowing skin and strong hair. Supplements and botanicals can ease perimenopause. Formulas with Vitex (chaste tree), black cohosh, dong quai, and saw palmetto can help with brain fog, mood changes, and hair loss related to shifting hormones. 76: The Gut-Thyroid Loop: How SIBO Sabotages Thyroid Healing With Dr. Rajsree Nambudripad
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Rajsree Nambudripad, founder of OC Integrative Medicine in Orange County, CA, who specializes in treating gut disorders through an integrative lens. Dr. Rajsree shares her personal journey with SIBO and how it inspired her to develop a comprehensive four-phase protocol addressing motility, digestion, inflammation, and microbial balance. Together, she and Dr. Wentz explore how SIBO impacts hypothyroidism, why many reflux cases stem from low stomach acid, and how to restore gut health without endless food restrictions or antibiotic cycles. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why so many thyroid patients have SIBO. Up to 50% of people with hypothyroidism test positive for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Slower gut motility, low stomach acid, and reduced bile and enzyme output make it easier for bacteria to overgrow in the small intestine – and this is why so many thyroid patients struggle with bloating, reflux, and food reactions. How SIBO mimics other gut issues. Bloating, food sensitivities, histamine intolerance, and acid reflux often stem from SIBO, but the underlying issue isn’t “too much acid” or “bad foods” – it’s misplaced bacteria in the small intestine damaging enzymes and inhibiting absorption. Dr. Rajsree’s four-step SIBO protocol. Discover the clear, phased protocol that supports motility, reduces gas and irritation, calms inflammation, and gently clears the overgrowth without overwhelming your system. Why conventional SIBO treatments fall short. Antibiotics and low-FODMAP diets may help temporarily, but without fixing motility and healing the gut lining, symptoms almost always return. A comprehensive approach reduces relapse and supports long-term gut health. The thyroid-SIBO connection. Low T3 slows the migrating motor complex, the gut’s natural “cleaning wave.” Fine-tuning thyroid medication or even adding a small amount of T3 support can improve motility and make SIBO recovery easier and more effective. Why reflux is often caused by too little stomach acid, not too much: Many people with Hashimoto’s actually have low stomach acid levels. Acid-suppressing medications can worsen nutrient deficiencies and create the perfect conditions for SIBO. Supporting digestion with betaine HCl and enzymes often reduces bloating and reflux far more effectively than PPIs. 75: From Hashimoto’s 411 to Autoimmune 411: A Patient Advocate’s Journey With Founder Alice McDonnell
In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Alice McDonnell, founder of the Hashimoto’s 411 community, the largest autoimmune thyroid support group, and the first to focus on the autoimmune roots of Hashimoto’s. She is also the creator of the Autoimmune 411 community and Academy. Drawing on two decades of advocacy, Alice shares why the healing sequence matters, how to cut through today’s noisy wellness feeds, and the foundations that help any protocol work better – without the setbacks. We explore iodine, LDN, and peptides, diet frameworks without dogma, and practical stories that save patients from learning the hard way. This is a grounded reset for anyone overwhelmed by conflicting advice about autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why sequence is everything. Alice explains how jumping straight into detox (or any “advanced” protocol) without opening drainage pathways and stabilizing the nervous system can backfire – sometimes for months – while a stepwise approach creates steady progress and fewer flares. How to navigate the info-storm. Reels and algorithms don’t equate to your unique healing plan. Not all wellness hacks may be appropriate for you. Remember to use a simple lens, considering context, bio-individuality, and timing, to stop doomscrolling through internet noise, and get to your own root cause. The foundational four to make protocols “stick.” Nervous system regulation, limbic retraining, lymphatic flow, and fascia support are the base layers that help diets, supplements, and detox actually work (and get you feeling better). Iodine, LDN, and peptides pros, cons, and prerequisites. From selenium status and iodine timing, to why LDN helps some and not others, to BPC-157 observations – learn the nuances that turn “it depends” into a personal plan. Diet without dogma. The Autoimmune Paleo (AIP) Diet can be game-changing, but it isn’t the only path. Alice discusses Mediterranean, Whole30-style, low-histamine, and GAPS-inspired approaches, plus when to pause eliminations and evaluate deeper triggers like stress, infections, or mold. Real-world cautionary tales. We share stories on DIY colon cleanses, poorly timed chelation, and even “healthy” spirulina gone wrong, and how to protect yourself with education, labs, and sequence – so you don’t have to learn the hard way! 74: Sluggish Bile, Sluggish Thyroid: The Gallbladder-Fatty Liver Connection With Olivia Haas
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews gallbladder and fatty liver nutritionist Olivia Haas about the connection between bile flow, liver health, and thyroid function. They cover early red flags (like pale, “sticky” stools and nausea after fats), when low-fat makes sense (and when it doesn’t), and practical ways to stimulate bile gently with bitters, minerals, and targeted supplements. They also discuss various testing methods and a step-by-step approach to optimal digestive health for those with and without gallbladders. What you’ll learn in this episode: Fat intolerance is a bile story – start with flow. Nausea after fatty meals, reflux, and pale, sticky, or floating stools point to sluggish bile. Instead of staying low-fat forever, Olivia explains how to gently improve bile composition and flow so you can digest fats again. Bitters are a simple first step. Radicchio, dandelion (tea or greens), lemon water, and diluted apple cider vinegar can quickly nudge bile flow and ease fat sensitivity, especially when used before meals. Olivia shares when to start bitters, how often, and how to scale up safely. The thyroid–gallbladder loop runs both ways. Low thyroid can thicken bile (cholesterol supersaturation) and weaken gallbladder contraction (low CCK), while poor bile flow can impair T4-to-T3 conversion and raise toxin burden – fueling a vicious cycle. Fatty liver is common, and reversible when you catch it early. Don’t wait for elevated liver enzymes. Patterns like high triglycerides, low HDL, insulin resistance, fatigue, 3 a.m. wake-ups, clay-colored stools, and PMS can flag trouble earlier and justify an ultrasound/FibroScan. Post-cholecystectomy? You still need a plan. Without the gallbladder’s “regulator,” bile can drip constantly and irritate the gut – or be too weak to digest fats. Olivia’s priorities: individualized digestive support (enzymes/bile salts/ACV), mineral repletion, fiber, and steady liver support. Myth-busting time. “Low-fat forever saves your gallbladder” (it doesn’t), “you can eat anything after surgery” (please don’t), and “it’s just genetics” (choices and exposures turn genes on) all miss the bigger picture of bile flow, metabolism, and toxins. 73: Preconception Revolution: A Science-Backed Path to Fertility & Generational Health | Dr. Ann Shippy
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Ann Shippy, an integrative physician and former engineer who has become a leader in functional medicine and environmental health. Dr. Shippy discusses how toxins, genetics, and nutrient status can shape fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and even the long-term health of future generations. Listeners will discover practical, science-based strategies to reduce toxic exposures, restore the body’s natural detoxification systems, and prepare for healthy conception and pregnancy – even later in life. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why preconception health matters for every family. The six to twelve months before conception are a key window to influence fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and a child’s lifelong health. Dr. Ann Shippy explains how both parents’ nutrition, toxin exposure, and stress can shape DNA expression, and how small changes can support healthy conception. The overlooked role of toxins in chronic illness. Mold, heavy metals, plastics, and household chemicals can quietly affect hormones and immune balance. Dr. Shippy shares common environmental exposures she sees in her patients and how testing, detoxification, and lifestyle shifts can help restore balance. How genetics and epigenetics shape our resilience. Your DNA isn’t your destiny. Dr. Shippy explains how nutrients such as methylated B vitamins, folate, and choline can support methylation, helping “turn on” genes that promote health and silence those linked to disease. The critical link between gut health and detoxification. A healthy gut microbiome helps clear toxins, balance hormones, and support fertility. Dr. Shippy outlines ways to strengthen gut and liver detox pathways naturally with binders, glutathione, and key nutrients. How to create a toxin-free home and pregnancy plan. From air and water filtration to safer personal care and cleaning products, Dr. Shippy offers realistic ways to minimize toxic load and protect both parents and developing babies. 72: Reversing Crohn’s & Colitis Naturally: Why Everything You’ve Been Told Is Wrong - With Josh Dech
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Josh Dech, a holistic nutritionist and digestive health expert who is challenging the conventional medicine narrative around Crohn’s disease and colitis. Gut symptoms are common for those with Hashimoto’s and thyroid disease, and they often have similar root causes, including inflammation, food sensitivities, microbiome imbalances, and toxins. Josh reveals why the mainstream approach often fails patients, and how natural strategies and “root cause” thinking can lead to remission and, in some cases, even recovery. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why the conventional view of Crohn’s and colitis may be flawed. Standard approaches often focus on suppressing symptoms with medications or recommending surgery when things progress, but they rarely ask why inflammation is happening in the first place. Josh explains how this limited model leaves many people dependent on treatments that don’t provide long-term solutions. The hidden drivers of gut inflammation. Crohn’s and colitis rarely happen “out of nowhere.” Josh explains how food sensitivities, microbiome imbalances, toxins, and immune dysregulation often interact to create chronic inflammation, and how identifying your personal triggers can open the door to remission. The role of nutrition in calming the gut. Instead of fearing food, Josh shows how the right diet can calm the immune system and repair the gut lining. When nutrition is used strategically – removing irritants and rebuilding with nutrient-dense foods – the body often heals more effectively than it does on medication alone. Real stories of reversal and recovery. Hundreds of Josh’s clients have defied expectations – moving from flare-ups and medication dependence to full, symptom-free lives. Their results show that Crohn’s and colitis aren’t life sentences, but conditions that can improve dramatically when you heal from the inside out. 71: Palpitations, High Cholesterol & the #1 Killer: How to Reclaim Your Heart Health With Dr. Jack Wolfson
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with integrative cardiologist Dr. Jack Wolfson about how heart health goes far beyond lab numbers. They discuss why thyroid issues and nutrient deficiencies can trigger palpitations, why cholesterol isn’t the villain it’s made out to be, and how lifestyle factors like sleep, sunlight, nutrition, and reducing toxins, can naturally support cardiovascular wellness. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why palpitations may be a message from your body: Heart flutters often reflect deeper imbalances like thyroid dysfunction, iron or magnesium deficiency, or toxin exposure. Dr. Wolfson explains how addressing the root cause can calm the heart and restore balance naturally. Why cholesterol is not the villain we’ve been told. Cholesterol is essential for hormone production, cell membranes, and vitamin D synthesis. Elevated cholesterol is often a sign of other imbalances such as thyroid dysfunction, liver congestion, or nutrient deficiencies, not a statin deficiency. When “conventional” treatments miss the mark: Statins and blood pressure drugs may improve numbers but overlook root causes such as adrenal stress, nutrient depletion, and toxin overload. Dr. Wolfson shares how true healing begins with rebalancing the body. The heart-healing power of lifestyle medicine: Sunlight, sleep, nutrient-rich food, movement, and emotional healing are powerful heart supports. Even daily sun exposure can boost vitamin D, nitric oxide, and melatonin for better blood pressure and sleep. The overlooked connection between your mouth, gut, and heart: Periodontal disease, leaky gut, and microbiome imbalance can fuel inflammation that affects both thyroid and heart function. Discover how holistic dental care and gut healing can protect your cardiovascular system. Supplements and natural supports that work. Nutrients like beet root, L-arginine, grape seed extract, CoQ10, carnitine, and omega-3s can improve circulation, support mitochondria, and optimize heart and thyroid function. 70: My Thyroid “Aha” Moment: Low Stomach Acid | Dr. Izabella Wentz
In this solo episode, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares the turning point that shifted her Hashimoto’s recovery: discovering that “acid reflux” can stem from low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) rather than excess stomach acid, as many believe. She explains how hypochlorhydria drives fatigue, brain fog, pain, nutrient deficiencies, SIBO/H. pylori risk, and why supporting digestion can restore energy and clarity fast. She outlines a practical betaine HCl + pepsin titration, who should avoid it, and simple daily upgrades (like mindful meals, lemon water or diluted ACV, bitters, and thiamine). Real-world response rates and safety notes are included. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why “acid reflux” can actually mean low stomach acid. In hypothyroidism, stomach acid often runs low, which impairs protein breakdown, fuels overgrowths, increases ammonia (hello brain fog), and leaves you tired after meals. Understanding this flips the usual reflux narrative and opens a path to real relief. How low acid drives fatigue, pain, and mood changes. Poor protein digestion means fewer amino acids for neurotransmitters and repair; when you add in nutrient gaps (B12, iron/ferritin) and inflammatory byproducts, you’ve got a perfect storm for low energy, aches, and low mood. A step-by-step guide to finding your ideal betaine HCl + pepsin dose at meals. Dr. Wentz shares how to determine how many capsules would be most suitable for you, and how to use it safely for best results. When to pause or avoid HCl. It’s not for everyone: if you have active or past peptic ulcers, confirmed H. pylori, current acid overproduction, ingredient sensitivities, or chronic NSAID/steroid use, if you use ongoing PPIs (or you’re weaning), or if you are pregnant/breastfeeding, talk to your clinician first. Simple daily upgrades to raise digestive fire. Eating in a calm state, chewing well, trying diluted lemon water or apple cider vinegar with meals, considering digestive bitters, and assessing thiamine can be surprising helpers for stomach acid and thyroid fatigue. Real-world outcomes and what to expect. In Dr. Wentz’s experience, ~60% of people feel better on HCl, ~33% don’t tolerate it, and ~7% feel no change. Wins often include more energy, less pain/bloating, better mood, smoother bowels, and easier weight balance when digestion finally “clicks.” Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! 69: The Anti-Elimination Approach to Gut Healing with Steven Wright
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews gut health expert Steven Wright, founder of Healthy Gut. Steven shares his 15-year healing journey and explains why restrictive elimination diets often fail to resolve the root causes of digestive distress. Together, they explore how low stomach acid, SIBO, histamine overload, and stress contribute to food sensitivities – and how to build a more resilient gut that allows for food freedom. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why endless food elimination often backfires. While cutting out certain foods can help in the short term, staying overly restrictive can harm the microbiome, create nutrient deficiencies, and worsen food reactions over time. Healing requires more than just “the perfect diet.” The overlooked role of stomach acid in gut health. Low stomach acid is common in people with Hashimoto’s and can drive SIBO, reflux, nutrient deficiencies, and ongoing inflammation. Steven explains how simple HCl support can restore digestion, energy, and overall resilience. How histamine intolerance fuels food sensitivities. Symptoms like headaches, rashes, diarrhea, anxiety, or migraines can stem from histamine overload. Steven and Dr. Wentz discuss how mast cells, DAO enzymes, and butyrate help calm inflammation and support histamine tolerance. Why probiotics and prebiotics aren’t enough on their own. A healthy gut requires proper digestion, enzymes, and microbial balance. Butyrate and brush border enzymes may be the missing link in rebuilding tolerance to plants and fibers. Stress, the nervous system, and digestion. Even a perfect diet and supplements won’t work if you’re stuck in “fight-or-flight” mode. Discover practical ways to support your parasympathetic nervous system and adrenals, so your body can be in a state of healing. 68: Remission of SIBO, Crohns, IBS and IBD in Just Weeks with Debbie Steinbock
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews certified holistic nutrition counselor Debbie Steinbock about the elemental diet – a powerful but often overlooked tool for healing thyroid-related gut imbalances and SIBO, IBS, and IBD. Debbie shares her personal healing journey from Crohn’s disease, her clinical experience guiding clients with complex autoimmune conditions, and why the elemental diet can succeed where other protocols fall short. Together, they explore how elemental diets feed the body while starving bacterial overgrowth, the pros and cons of different formulas, and how to avoid common mistakes that cause setbacks. Debbie also introduces her Elemental Diet Success Plan, a step-by-step roadmap to help people use this therapy with clarity and confidence. What you’ll learn in this episode: The connection between gut and thyroid health. Many people with hypothyroidism may also have SIBO (up to 50%), and motility issues tied to thyroid disease can fuel bacterial overgrowth. The elemental diet offers a way to reset both digestion and immune reactivity. The elemental diet explained. Debbie breaks down what’s actually in an elemental shake, why it’s considered “pre-digested,” and how it feeds the body while giving the gut time to rest and heal. Why SIBO and IBS are so stubborn. Many protocols fail because they either don’t fully eradicate bacterial overgrowth or they overwhelm a sensitive gut. Debbie explains why the elemental diet can be more effective, with research showing that the majority of people who try it find success in a matter of weeks. Partial vs. full elemental diets. Not everyone needs to do a 100% liquid diet. Debbie describes how partial approaches – paired with “soft, warm, and mushy” foods – can calm flare-ups and support long-term remission for conditions like IBD. Practical tips and side effects to expect. From energy swings and hunger to oral discomfort, Debbie shares what to watch for, how to prepare, and the strategies she teaches in her Elemental Diet Success Plan to minimize setbacks. Why personalization matters. Not all formulas are created equal, and not all patients need the same approach. Debbie shares how to choose between amino-based and semi-elemental shakes, and when each might be best. 67: Overcoming Thyroid Hair Loss and When to Reintroduce Gluten With Dietitian Nataliia Sanzo
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with registered dietitian Nataliia Sanzo about practical ways to calm the immune system through the gut, address common hair loss drivers in Hashimoto’s, and reintroduce foods safely after an elimination diet. They discuss the stool test markers that matter most (including intestinal permeability and H. pylori), the often-overlooked roles of blood sugar and bile flow, and how targeted nutrients can support healing. What you’ll learn: Gut health is central to autoimmunity. About 70% of the immune system lives in the gut. When the intestinal lining is irritated or “leaky,” the immune system stays on high alert, which can worsen thyroid symptoms. Nataliia shares which stool test markers matter most, such as short-chain fatty acids and signs of infections (like H. pylori), and how addressing them can help you shape your health plan. A good stool test saves guesswork. Beyond identifying infections, tests can show whether you’re making enough digestive enzymes or butyrate, and whether bile flow needs support. With that information, you can start with a focused protocol (diet and a few well-chosen supplements), see early improvements, and then transition to food-first maintenance. Food freedom is possible after elimination diets: With gut repair and nutrient repletion, Nataliia shares her step-by-step method for reintroducing foods safely and avoiding unnecessary long-term restriction. Hair loss has common, fixable drivers. Low free-T3, low ferritin (Nataliia aims for ferritin ≥70 ng/mL), zinc/selenium/B-vitamin gaps, high stress hormones, and gut infections are frequent contributors. Supporting T4-to-T3 conversion (through gut and liver care, and in some cases with T3-containing medication), replenishing iron stores, and calming inflammation can make a real difference. Blood sugar and bile flow quietly shape symptoms. Frequent spikes in blood sugar can increase inflammation and reduce T3 activation. Simple steps, such as a protein-forward plate and a 10-minute walk after meals, often help quickly. On the digestion side, healthy bile flow supports fat digestion and absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K, and helps clear hormone byproducts. Why H. pylori deserves attention: Nataliia shares why this common infection often lingers unnoticed, driving histamine symptoms, food sensitivities, and even hair loss, and the treatment options that can make a profound difference. 66: The Gut-Thyroid Connection: Uncovering the Root Causes of Intestinal Permeability | Dr. Izabella Wentz
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz explores the science behind intestinal permeability (leaky gut), a critical factor in both Hashimoto’s and irritable bowel syndrome. Drawing from her own story and over a decade of clinical research, she shares how healing the gut can lower thyroid antibodies, improve symptoms, and even bring autoimmune conditions into remission. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why intestinal permeability is central to autoimmunity. Dr. Alessio Fasano’s “three-legged stool” theory shows that while we can’t change our genes and don’t always know our exact triggers, we can heal intestinal permeability – often reducing inflammation and lowering thyroid antibodies. Dr. Wentz shares steps that can strengthen your gut lining and calm immune reactivity. Leaky gut often shows up before an autoimmune diagnosis. IBS symptoms frequently appear 5 to 15 years before Hashimoto’s or other autoimmune conditions. Digestive pain, reflux, or bloating may be early warning signs, but intestinal permeability can also exist without gut symptoms. Discover how to recognize these early patterns and begin restoring balance before autoimmunity progresses. Food sensitivities play a big role. Gluten and dairy are the most common culprits, but soy, eggs, nuts, grains, and nightshades can also trigger leaky gut. Dr. Wentz shares her tips on short-term elimination plans, tracking symptom responses, and safely reintroducing foods. Nutrient deficiencies can prevent gut healing. Zinc and glutamine are two of the most critical nutrients for repairing the gut lining, yet they’re often depleted in people with autoimmune disease, chronic stress, or poor digestion. Discover how to assess your nutrient status and use targeted supplementation or food-based support to rebuild your gut barrier. Gut infections and imbalances are hidden drivers. SIBO, Candida, mold colonization, and parasites like Blastocystis hominis all contribute to intestinal permeability. Discover how functional tests such as breath tests, organic acid testing, GI-MAP, or mycotoxin panels can uncover these hidden infections, and how to work with your practitioner to treat them effectively. Healing your gut transforms overall health. Restoring gut integrity can lead to remission of Hashimoto’s and IBS, and even improve conditions like migraines, asthma, and allergies. Discover how strategies like mindful eating, stress reduction, and using key nutrients can help your intestinal lining thrive. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! Dr. Wentz’s new book, IBS: Finding and Treating the Root Cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, will be out on March 17, 2026. Many people with Hashimoto’s have irritable bowel syndrome, which can be both a root cause and symptom of autoimmunity. This comprehensive guide reveals how irritable bowel syndrome is often a catch-all diagnosis that overlooks treatable root causes. It offers a step-by-step approach to help readers understand what’s really driving gut symptoms, and how to create a personalized plan to restore gut health and overall wellness. 65: The Perimenopause Revolution With Dr. Mariza Snyder
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Mariza Snyder, bestselling author and women’s health advocate, about one of the most misunderstood life transitions: perimenopause. Her new book, The Perimenopause Revolution, is a love letter to women navigating perimenopause. Together, they explore why this stage often feels like a second puberty, how declining hormones affect the entire body, and the steps women can take to feel like themselves again. What you’ll learn in this episode: Perimenopause is a neuroendocrine shift – a “second puberty.” Dr. Mariza explains how declining communication between the ovaries and brain leads to erratic hormones, destabilizing moods, and physical changes. Just like puberty and postpartum, this season reshapes our physiology and even rewires our brains. Symptoms often begin earlier than expected. While the average age of menopause is around 52, many women feel perimenopause as early as their mid-to-late thirties, especially those with Hashimoto’s, PCOS, endometriosis, or high stress loads. Recognizing the signs early can help shorten the learning curve. Progesterone declines first, and it impacts the brain. Early perimenopause is marked by low progesterone, leading to poor stress tolerance, sleep issues, mood swings, and PMS-like symptoms. Estrogen follows later with its own ripple effects, from hot flashes to joint pain and cognitive changes. Why hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be a game-changer. Despite fear-mongering, FDA-approved bioidentical hormones can be safe, affordable, and life-changing. Dr. Mariza shares her mother’s story, her own journey, and tips for advocating with doctors to get the support you need. Lifestyle shifts are non-negotiable. 64: Is Your Indoor Air Making You Sick? How to Fix it Fast With Mike Feldstein
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Wentz interviews Mike Feldstein, founder of Jaspr, about the hidden health effects of indoor air and practical solutions you can use today. Mike explains how modern building practices trap pollutants, why classrooms are a high-impact target for filtration, and the real difference between small retail purifiers and commercial air scrubbers. Tune in to learn about the best choices for indoor air filtering, and how this and other simple steps can relieve conditions like asthma and allergies, help you get a more restful sleep, and support recovery for anyone with autoimmune disease and chronic sensitivities. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air: Unlike outdoor environments where wind, sunlight, and rain naturally cleanse toxins, our homes trap mold, VOCs, and bacteria inside. As a result, indoor air can be 5 to 10 times dirtier than the air outside, driving brain fog, fatigue, allergies, and asthma. Targeted changes like daily ventilation, high-efficiency air scrubbers, and simple monitors can transform your environment into one that supports healing instead of undermining it. How “sick building syndrome” affects your health: The energy-efficient buildings that started to be built in the 1970s seal in mold, chemicals, and poor ventilation. This hidden trade-off explains why so many people feel unwell in their own homes and workplaces. Why size and scale matter in air purification: Small, store-bought purifiers often work like golf carts – fine for light use, but not built for real health demands. Air scrubbers operate more like SUVs, moving far more air through larger filters and reducing pollutants on a much bigger scale. Choosing the right “vehicle” for your space can mean the difference between slightly cleaner air and truly life-changing results. Everyday toxins may be hiding in your home: Furniture, flooring, cleaning products, fragrances, and even diaper pails can release chemicals that linger in the air. These daily exposures add up, and clearing them can relieve symptoms you may not have connected to your environment. Air scrubbers vs. basic purifiers: Store-bought purifiers may only improve air quality by 10 to 20%, while air scrubbers like Jaspr can reduce pollutants by up to 99%. That level of clean air can be life-changing for those with asthma, autoimmunity, or chronic sleep issues. Clean air as a missing pillar of functional medicine: Just as water filtration and clean diets are now common practice, air quality deserves the same attention. Without it, even the best supplements and protocols may fall short of lasting results. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! 63: The Iodine Paradox: What Every Thyroid Patient Needs to Know – With Dr. Alan Christianson
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz speaks with naturopathic endocrinologist and bestselling author Dr. Alan Christianson about the controversial role of iodine in thyroid health. While iodine is essential in small amounts, excess intake has been shown to trigger Hashimoto’s, worsen autoimmunity, and disrupt thyroid function. Dr. Christianson shares how a carefully structured low iodine protocol has helped many of his patients reduce antibodies, normalize TSH, and in some cases, taper off thyroid medications. He also explores hidden dietary and lifestyle sources of iodine, why genetics play a role in tolerance, and how supporting nutrients like selenium and vitamin D can protect thyroid health. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why iodine is a double-edged sword for the thyroid. While essential in small amounts, iodine has one of the narrowest therapeutic ranges of any nutrient. Too much can trigger Hashimoto’s, worsen autoimmunity, and cause the thyroid to “shut down,” leading to hypothyroidism. The genetic factor in iodine tolerance. Dr. Christianson explains how some people are adapted to coastal diets rich in iodine, while others with “inland genetics” are much more sensitive. These differences can explain why some people tolerate seaweed and kelp – while others see skyrocketing antibodies. Hidden sources of iodine in your diet and home. Beyond seaweed snacks and iodized salt, high iodine exposure can come from dairy, processed bread, prenatal vitamins, and even personal care products like conditioner and lotion. Identifying these sources is a key step toward healing. How a low-iodine reset can help the thyroid recover. Short-term iodine reduction (below ~100 mcg/day) can give the thyroid space to heal. Dr. Christianson shares research and patient stories showing that many people who stick with the reset see dramatic improvements, from normalizing thyroid labs to lowering antibodies, often within just a few months. When to discuss med changes with your doctor. In some cases, a supervised low-iodine protocol may allow for gradual reductions in thyroid medication. Dr. Christianson notes that studies show many patients can safely lower – and some even stop – their meds, but emphasizes this process must be done cautiously, with close monitoring. The co-nutrients that widen your “safety window.” Selenium, zinc, vitamin D, and iron aren’t optional extras; they’re critical for how your thyroid handles iodine. These nutrients support the enzymes that regulate iodine metabolism and help protect the thyroid from oxidative stress. When they’re low, excess iodine does more damage; when they’re optimized, your thyroid can tolerate a wider range without flaring. autoimmunity. 62: Lung Detox Secrets for Healing Chronic Illness and Boosting Vitality With Christa Orecchio
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews longtime friend and collaborator Christa Orecchio, a clinical and holistic nutritionist with nearly two decades of experience in gut, adrenal, and lung health. They discuss a cutting-edge integrative approach to healing asthma, mold illness, long-COVID lung damage, and respiratory inflammation, with surprising connections to emotional trauma and nervous system regulation. Christa shares how salicylates, environmental toxins, and even repressed grief can lead to persistent lung dysfunction, and how her new lung rejuvenation program combines herbal therapy, postbiotics, trauma healing, and targeted breathwork to reverse symptoms and restore cellular vitality. Tune in to learn more about: Why lung issues go beyond inflammation or allergies: Trauma, mold exposure, antibiotics, smoking or vaping, unresolved grief, and even early childhood infections can create deep dysfunction in the lungs. Addressing them is essential for lasting healing. How environmental toxins silently damage lungs: Everyday exposures such as flame retardants, formaldehyde, pesticides, glyphosate, wildfire smoke, and nanoplastics can scar lung tissue over time. Detox support and air purification become essential, even for those living “clean.” The surprising role of foods and oils in asthma: High-salicylate foods and products including dried fruits, apples, strawberries, plums, tomatoes, cucumbers, coffee, wine, and peppermint oil can trigger respiratory flares. Short elimination trials combined with salt therapy often bring quick relief. The emotional-spiritual link to breathing: Unprocessed grief and trauma can lodge in the lungs, showing up as asthma, chronic cough, or shallow breathing. Healing through grief work, somatic therapies, or homeopathy can restore vitality and ease of breath. Herbs and nutrients that rebuild the lungs: Lungwort, golden seal, lotus root, boswellia, DNA and RNA tissue factors, postbiotics, and mitochondrial supports such as CoQ10, PQQ, and L-carnitine help restore tissue integrity, reduce inflammation, and strengthen resilience. Why nervous system healing is non-negotiable: Breathwork, EFT, and somatic trauma therapies shift the body out of fight-or-flight and into parasympathetic rest-and-heal mode. This nervous system reset unlocks true recovery for both lungs and thyroid. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! 61: Biology of Trauma: How Trauma Fuels Autoimmunity & Hashimoto’s – With Dr. Aimie Apigian
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Aimie Apigian, physician and author of The Biology of Trauma. Together, they explore how unresolved trauma – often overlooked in thyroid care – can predispose the body to autoimmunity, create nervous system imbalances, and keep people stuck in chronic fatigue or thyroid symptoms despite “doing everything right.” Dr. Apigian shares her journey from biochemistry and foster parenting to becoming a leading trauma expert, as well as her own experience with autoimmunity. She explains how trauma physiology differs from stress, why unresolved attachment wounds fuel thyroid issues, and what tools can help rewire the nervous system for safety and healing. What you’ll learn in this episode: Trauma isn’t always what you think. Many people dismiss their experiences because they didn’t have “big T” trauma. Dr. Aimie explains how even subtle or forgotten childhood events can rewire the nervous system, making the body feel unsafe and setting the stage for autoimmunity. Autoimmunity can be a trauma response. The body’s immune system reflects what the nervous system has learned: “it’s not safe to be me.” This creates a biology of trauma that keeps us in fight, flight, or freeze, driving thyroid imbalances and chronic fatigue. Why stress management isn’t enough. Breathwork, meditation, or cold plunges may help stress, but if the body is in trauma physiology, those tools can backfire. Healing requires working within your body’s capacity and building a “window of tolerance” for safety. How attachment wounds can affect thyroid health. From not being held enough as a baby to learning to suppress needs in childhood, these early experiences train us to abandon ourselves. Dr. Aimie shares how these patterns directly connect to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. Signs you might have stored trauma. Feeling constantly unsafe, being stuck in cycles of overwhelm, having unexplained fatigue, or always waiting for the “next shoe to drop” are all red flags that your body may be carrying unresolved trauma. Tools that create a biology of safety. Somatic practices, EMDR, neurofeedback, and Dr. Aimie’s five somatic self-practices can shift the nervous system out of trauma and into safety – often in under five minutes – without needing to rely on substances or old coping strategies. 60: Reversing Hashimoto’s? The Unconventional Tools You Haven’t Tried Yet – With Lexi Yoo
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz sits down with integrative nurse practitioner Lexi Yoo, founder of Yoo Direct Health, to explore unconventional, but highly effective, therapies for Hashimoto’s and other autoimmune conditions. From low-dose naltrexone and hormone optimization to cutting-edge peptides, ozone therapy, and semaglutide (Ozempic), Lexi shares how she personalizes care to help patients finally see progress when standard treatments fall short. They also dive into how to measure true healing using labs and symptom trackers, and why these innovative therapies should be accessible to everyday patients – not just biohackers. Whether you’ve hit a plateau or are just starting your healing journey, this episode offers fresh, practical tools to help you move the needle on recovery. Tune in to learn more: Low-dose naltrexone (LDN) is a powerful, underused tool for modulating the immune system in Hashimoto’s. Lexi shares how she tailors dosing based on individual tolerance and symptoms, starting as low as 0.25 mg in sensitive cases. It can help improve mood, reduce inflammation and pain, regulate appetite, and support sleep – all of which are commonly disrupted in thyroid and autoimmune disorders. Peptides like BPC-157, KPV, and Larazotide offer next-level support for gut healing and immune balance. These naturally-occurring compounds repair gut lining, reduce inflammatory triggers, and can be used strategically in gut protocols alongside supplements like glutamine and zinc carnosine. Lexi shares how using these together can accelerate healing in patients with Hashimoto’s, IBS, SIBO, and even post-surgical recovery. Wellbutrin and semaglutide (Ozempic) aren’t just for depression or weight loss – they’re strategic tools for Hashimoto’s healing. Lexi explains how combining these medications with LDN can quiet food noise, stabilize dopamine and insulin signaling, and reduce inflammation that worsens autoimmune flares. These therapies can also support emotional resilience, especially in women juggling hormones, motherhood, careers, and chronic fatigue. Testosterone replacement can be a game-changer for women with Hashimoto’s – and no, it won’t make you look like a bodybuilder. Lexi explains how testosterone supports the thymus gland, improves libido and energy, and can even reduce thyroid antibodies. She discusses various delivery methods including pellets, creams, and new oral options, emphasizing that personalized dosing and monitoring are key. Ozone therapy is an emerging powerhouse for lowering thyroid antibodies and enhancing mitochondrial health. By delivering oxygen in a unique oxidative form, IV ozone helps improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and support immune function – especially in patients with chronic infections, high TPO levels, or autoimmunity-related fatigue. Lexi also shares how she pairs ozone with UV light, rectal insufflation, and topical applications for targeted healing. Semaglutide (Ozempic) can be a safe and strategic option for Hashimoto’s when used properly. Lexi clarifies the misunderstood connection between GLP-1 agonists and thyroid health, and how this medication – when supported by labs, nutrition, and exercise – can reduce systemic inflammation and support metabolic healing. She’s also seen benefits for PCOS, food addiction, joint pain, and even fertility in Hashimoto’s patients. 59: Getting to the Root Cause of Eczema With Dr. Sheila Kilbane
In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews integrative pediatrician Dr. Sheila Kilbane, who guided Izabella to get her son 100% eczema free, about the often-overlooked root causes of childhood eczema. Dr. Kilbane shares how a combination of gut-focused strategies and targeted topical therapies can transform the lives of children suffering from chronic eczema without extreme elimination diets. Listeners will gain insights into the link between eczema, histamine, food allergies, and the skin microbiome, as well as the importance of supporting detox, digestion, and the immune system as a whole. We’ll discuss: How Dr. Kilbane helped Izabella’s son become 100% eczema free. Izabella’s son developed eczema around age 1. She consulted with numerous experts to no avail, until working with Dr. Kilbane. Within weeks, her son’s eczema improved by 80% and after completing recommended tests/treatment, the eczema vanished within days. Why eczema needs a “both/and” approach. Eczema healing often requires both external skin support and internal gut healing. Combining gentle topical treatments (including a compounded antimicrobial cream with diluted steroids) with targeted nutrition and gut support can reduce symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Relying solely on diet or creams can lead to frustration, while this integrative strategy supports faster, more lasting healing. Histamine overload may be at the root. Beyond itchy skin, excess histamine can cause sleep issues, irritability, poor appetite, and mood swings, especially in kids with eczema. Environmental allergies, gut dysbiosis, and Staph on the skin can all increase histamine levels. Short-term antihistamines, quercetin, or vitamin C can offer fast relief while deeper root causes are addressed. Why elimination diets alone aren’t the answer. While food sensitivities can play a role in eczema, extreme elimination diets, especially for picky eaters, often backfire, leading to nutrient deficiencies/stress. In many cases, kids actually tolerate more foods once the skin barrier and gut are healed. Rather than removing more foods, Dr. Kilbane’s protocol focuses on restoring gut integrity and calming inflammation. How the Aron Protocol can stop flare-ups in their tracks. This compounded topical can reduce Staph bacteria and inflammation on the skin, calming eczema flares without the rebound many parents fear. Used alongside gut healing, it allows for longer-term remission and more resilient skin. Gentle changes can make a big difference. Simple tools, like filtered bath water, dye-free detergents, probiotics, enzymes, and nutrient-rich fats, can reduce inflammation and restore the skin barrier. Even changing how and when kids bathe can make a difference. Her protocols emphasize layering small changes rather than overwhelming families with a massive overhaul. Food allergies may fade when the skin heals. A damaged skin barrier can actually trigger food sensitivities, especially when children scratch food particles into open eczema patches. Once the skin is healed and histamine levels drop, kids often become more tolerant to foods that previously caused issues. In some cases, even anaphylactic food allergies can be re-evaluated safely under medical supervision. Tune in to learn more about treating eczema from the inside out! 58: Thriving After Thyroid Cancer With Carly Brown
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Carly Brown, a wellness entrepreneur and thyroid cancer thriver who took her diagnosis as an invitation to dig deeper into root cause healing. Carly shares how she used daily juicing, emotional therapy, detoxification, and dental intervention to drastically reduce her tumor before choosing thyroidectomy on her own terms. Carly’s story is a testament to resilience, integrative medicine, and the importance of advocating for yourself every step of the way. She also dives into the tools she continues to use to stay cancer-free, including molecular hydrogen water, CrossFit, and combined T3/T4 hormone replacement. Tune in to learn more about: ✅How Carly reframed her diagnosis and chose healing over fear. Instead of identifying with the illness, Carly made a conscious decision to say “I am healing” rather than “I have cancer.” This subtle but powerful shift helped her stay focused on recovery and resilience. She used affirmations and mindset work as the foundation for her healing journey, reminding herself daily that her body was capable of vibrant health. ✅The juicing protocol Carly used to support detox and cellular regeneration. Her daily anti-inflammatory routine consisting of 64 oz. of raw, organic, cold-pressed vegetable juice made with ginger, turmeric, garlic, beets, green apple, and more helped her regain energy, shrink her tumor, and launch her own juice business, Alchemy. ✅A root canal infection was the hidden root cause of her cancer. A cone beam scan revealed a decade-old jaw infection from past dental trauma and root canals – silently suppressing her immune system and likely fueling cancer growth. Multiple oral surgeries cleared the infection, bringing back her energy and triggering rapid tumor shrinkage. ✅The emotional healing that was just as critical as the physical. Carly worked with therapists and healing practitioners to process suppressed grief, trauma, and inherited emotional wounds, especially surrounding her father’s sudden death and her own perfectionism. She emphasizes that unresolved emotional pain can manifest physically, and that healing often requires looking inward. Tools like guided therapy, ancestral healing, and even plant medicine helped her release stored emotions that had been weighing on her health. ✅Why she eventually chose thyroidectomy, and how she did it on her own terms. Although she initially declined surgery, Carly returned to the idea 18 months later after dramatically improving her health through nutrition, detox, and emotional healing. She entered surgery stronger, calmer, and more informed – an empowered patient instead of a fearful one. Her case is a beautiful example of how holistic and conventional approaches can work together, especially when we take the time to listen to our bodies and build the right support team. ✅Thriving post-thyroidectomy: Carly’s protocol for hormone balance and vibrant energy. Carly now takes both T3 and T4 thyroid hormones and works closely with a functional provider to maintain optimal levels. She also follows a gluten-free, high-protein diet, drinks molecular hydrogen water, strength trains several times a week, and continues regular detox practices like juicing and clinic retreats. These habits have helped her not just manage life after thyroid removal, but truly thrive with more energy, muscle tone, and purpose than ever before. 57: How I Accidentally Found a Method That Helps 80% of Hashimoto’s Patients in 2 Weeks | Dr. Izabella Wentz
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares the surprising discovery that became the foundation of her bestselling book Hashimoto’s Protocol: a simple liver reset that helps 80% of Hashimoto’s patients feel better within two weeks. She explains why toxins are such a hidden driver of thyroid symptoms, how the liver plays a central role in converting thyroid hormones, and why conventional detoxes often backfire. Listeners will gain actionable strategies to reduce toxic exposures, support natural detox pathways, and use gentle nutrients and foods to restore energy, focus, and balance. What you’ll learn in this episode: ✅Why toxins are such a hidden driver of Hashimoto’s symptoms. From environmental exposures like pollution, jet fuel, mold, and fluoride, to hidden household sources such as cleaning products and plastics, our bodies are constantly dealing with toxins. For those with Hashimoto’s, this toxic load can overwhelm detox pathways, leading to fatigue, brain fog, pain, skin issues, and stubborn weight gain. ✅The “aha moment” that changed my approach. When my most sensitive clients weren’t responding to diets or supplements, I tried targeted liver support. Within two weeks, their brain fog lifted, energy returned, and pain diminished. This confirmed that liver congestion and toxin buildup play a central role in keeping many Hashimoto’s patients sick. ✅The four key elements of my liver reset process. Healing begins by reducing toxic exposures (makeup, candles, plastics, cleaning chemicals), removing common trigger foods (gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, alcohol), incorporating healing foods (cruciferous veggies, beets, blueberries, sprouts, lemon water), and supporting natural detox pathways like sweating, hydration, and bowel movements. ✅Why supporting the liver is better than “forceful detox.” Harsh cleanses, chelation, or high-dose supplements can overwhelm the body and worsen symptoms. Gentle liver support using nutrients like NAC, magnesium, and milk thistle – paired with sweating, hydration, and fiber – works with the body’s natural systems for safe, effective toxin clearance. ✅How this protocol improves thyroid function. The liver is essential for converting T4 to active T3, clearing out estrogen metabolites, and reducing the backlog of toxins that sabotage energy and mood. By supporting the liver, we improve hormone balance, reduce antibodies, and create an environment where Hashimoto’s remission is possible. ✅Real-world results from thousands of clients (and myself). From reduced joint pain and brain fog to improved labs and weight loss, this simple process has created life-changing outcomes. I personally experienced clearer skin, more energy, and even emotional release after going through the liver reset. Tune in to learn how a gentle liver reset can help you reclaim your energy and move closer to remission. 56: The Thyroid, MTHFR, Gallstone, and Fatty Liver Connection With Lisa Winbourn
What do MTHFR, thyroid disease, gallbladder removal, and fatty liver all have in common? In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews nutritionist and methylation expert Lisa Windbourn, who specializes in helping women with MTHFR gene variations, liver dysfunction, and no gallbladder, feel better using methylation-focused nutrition. They explore the impact of sluggish methylation on thyroid health, detoxification, and bile flow, and how to support your body naturally even if you have complex symptoms. Lisa breaks down the role of folate (vitamin B9), how to safely choose B vitamins, and food-based strategies to help you feel energized, clear, and on the path to optimal wellness. Tune in to learn more about: What the MTHFR gene variation really means, and why it’s not a mutation: Lisa explains how this common genetic difference affects folate activation and detoxification. You’ll learn why this variation doesn’t guarantee symptoms and how stress, toxins, and lifestyle choices determine whether symptoms appear. How MTHFR relates to thyroid, liver, and gallbladder issues: This single enzyme plays a key role in hormone clearance, bile flow, and nutrient absorption. Sluggish methylation can increase the risk for Hashimoto’s, fatty liver, and digestive challenges, even in people following a clean diet. Why folic acid may be making things worse: Folic acid, the synthetic version of vitamin B9 found in many processed foods and supplements, can interfere with detox and methylation in people with MTHFR. Lisa shares how to spot it on labels and how to choose more effective forms like folate, methylfolate, or folinic acid. How to personalize your supplement approach: Not everyone does well with high-dose methylfolate. Lisa explains how your mood tendencies, such as anxiety or low energy, can guide your choices. You’ll also learn about gentler options like riboflavin, glycine, and TMG. How to support detox naturally, even without a gallbladder: Lisa offers practical tools, including salt flushes, breathwork, food-based nutrients, and bile support. These simple habits can help reduce inflammation, improve energy, and restore digestive function without intense protocols. Why balance is better than perfection: From enjoying dessert to skipping extreme wellness trends, Lisa and Izabella talk about real-life healing. They remind us that joy, flexibility, and self-awareness are just as important as supplements and lab tests. 55: The Overlooked Link Between the Liver, Gallbladder, and Thyroid Symptoms With Divya Gupta
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews holistic nutritionist Divya Gupta about a rarely discussed but deeply important topic in thyroid health: the liver and gallbladder connection. Divya shares her own story of gallbladder removal and Hashimoto’s diagnosis, and how it transformed her career and healing philosophy. Together, they explore how impaired bile flow, liver overload, and fat malabsorption can all disrupt thyroid function, and what you can do to support your body, especially if your gallbladder has been removed. Tune in to learn how practical tools like bitters, beets, ox bile, TUDCA, functional lab testing, and strategic food swaps can be game-changers when it comes to supporting your gallbladder, thyroid, and overall wellness. What you’ll learn in this episode: Why gallbladder issues can be a hidden trigger for thyroid symptoms: Even subtle signs like shoulder pain, sticky stools, or poor fat digestion may indicate early gallbladder dysfunction, and it’s more common than you think in those with Hashimoto’s. How bile production supports your thyroid at every level: Bile isn’t just for digesting fats, it helps clear toxins, absorb fat-soluble vitamins, and even plays a role in T4 to T3 conversion and gut health. Impaired bile flow can sabotage thyroid function silently. What happens after gallbladder removal and how to thrive without one: Divya shares her firsthand experience and offers practical strategies to support digestion and hormone health, even after surgery – including the use of ox bile, bitters, TUDCA, and targeted nutrients. The thyroid-liver connection that often gets missed: The liver helps activate thyroid hormone and regulate cholesterol. Yet many people with "normal labs" still benefit from liver support, especially when fatigue, brain fog, or inflammation linger. Why high cholesterol isn’t always the enemy, but can be a clue: Rather than jumping to statins, Divya explores what elevated cholesterol can reveal about thyroid dysfunction, sluggish bile flow, estrogen metabolism, and more. Everyday strategies to support your gallbladder and feel better: From lemon water and dandelion tea to gentle liver detox, bitters, and beet recipes, this episode is packed with tools to boost bile flow, improve nutrient absorption, and support thyroid healing from the ground up. 54: Thriving Through the Perimenopause Hormone Rollercoaster with Dr. Jen Pfleghaar
In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Jenny Pfleghaar, double board-certified physician and author of the upcoming book, The Perimenopause Reset, about how to thrive through the hormone rollercoaster of perimenopause. (She has Hashimoto’s too!) Perimenopause symptoms can feel overwhelming and confusing, and we’re finally lifting the curtain. We share practical insights and cutting-edge solutions, including how progesterone, cycle syncing, and peptides can help you rebalance hormones, support detox pathways, and navigate this life stage with more ease and joy. Tune in to learn: Why perimenopause feels unpredictable and what’s actually happening hormonally. It’s not just a slow decline in estrogen. Dr. Jen explains that during perimenopause, estrogen can spike and crash wildly, while progesterone steadily drops. This hormonal mismatch is why symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, and irregular cycles can appear seemingly out of nowhere and why the traditional “wait and see” approach doesn’t work. The overlooked role of cortisol, and why stress hits harder now. As progesterone levels drop, its natural calming effect on the nervous system fades. Dr. Jen highlights how women in perimenopause become more sensitive to stress, and how cortisol spikes can drive insomnia, anxiety, and fatigue. She emphasizes daily tools like HRV monitoring, breathwork, and parasympathetic support to calm the system and rebalance hormones. Blood sugar swings aren’t just about food; they’re a hormone issue. Perimenopause shifts metabolic function, increasing insulin resistance even in healthy women. Dr. Jen connects the dots between blood sugar instability and symptoms like belly weight, brain fog, and energy crashes, and shares why protein-forward meals and strength training are non-negotiable for midlife women. Sleep isn’t just rest, it’s hormonal therapy. Poor sleep amplifies cortisol, disrupts blood sugar, and worsens estrogen/progesterone balance. Dr. Jen underscores how addressing the cause of poor sleep, like stress, late-night eating, or alcohol, can unlock profound hormonal improvements without starting with medications. Progesterone might be the missing piece for mood, sleep, and calm. As levels drop in perimenopause, many women experience anxiety, restlessness, and disrupted sleep. Dr. Jen explains why bioidentical progesterone, particularly in oral form, can be a safe, effective way to restore balance and help women feel like themselves again. 53: Magnesium Myths: The Best (and Worst) Types for Hashimoto’s | Dr. Izabella Wentz
Magnesium can be a game-changer for people with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, but only if you’re using the right form for your body. In this episode of Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz shares her experience with magnesium deficiency, how to spot it even when labs are normal, and why forms like magnesium glycinate can make symptoms worse in some people. She explains how magnesium connects to thyroid health, and why magnesium citrate and Epsom salt baths are often the best choices for those with autoimmune thyroid conditions. Tune in to learn: Why more supplements aren’t always better: A client of Dr. Wentz was taking 12 different supplements but continued to struggle with anxiety, insomnia, and migraines. Once her magnesium deficiency was addressed with the right form of magnesium, nearly all of her symptoms resolved (and she stopped the other 12 supplements). This shows how one targeted intervention can be more effective than a whole shelf of supplements. How to spot magnesium deficiency even when your labs look normal: Muscle cramps, constipation, sensitivity to noise, and menstrual pain are just a few of the common signs that often go unnoticed. Since conventional testing may not catch low magnesium levels, Dr. Wentz shares a more symptom-based approach. The connection between magnesium and thyroid function: People with Hashimoto’s are more likely to be low in magnesium. This nutrient has been linked to higher thyroid antibodies and an increased risk of hypothyroidism. It also supports mood, energy, digestion, and overall immune health. Why magnesium citrate can be a helpful tool for thyroid-related symptoms: This form is often best for those dealing with constipation, anxiety, and cramps. Dr. Wentz also shares clinical findings showing that magnesium citrate may help normalize thyroid appearance on ultrasound. Why magnesium glycinate isn’t the right fit for everyone: Even though it’s popular, this form can trigger anxiety, joint pain, or panic in some individuals, Dr. Wentz explains who may need to avoid it and what to try instead. How Epsom salt can improve magnesium levels without taking a supplement: This topical option bypasses digestion and can quickly relieve joint pain, headaches, and stress. Dr. Wentz shares how to use it. Be sure to subscribe to the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast so you don’t miss an episode! 52: Hormones Uncensored – With America's Holistic Gynecologist Dr. Shawn Tassone
In this episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations podcast, Dr. Izabella Wentz interviews Dr. Shawn Tassone, America's Holistic Gynecologist and author of The Hormone Balance Bible. Together, they explore how archetypes like The Mother, The Nun, and The Underdog can help women understand hormonal imbalances in a more personal and empowering way. They also dive into testosterone therapy for women, the myths surrounding hormone replacement, the limitations of conventional birth control, and Dr. Tassone’s SHINES protocol, a holistic roadmap to hormone balance. Tune in to learn: Dr. Tassone created hormonal archetypes to make hormone healing easier to relate to. Instead of just reading lab results, women can see their patterns reflected in archetypes like the Mother, the Underdog, and the Nun, and learn how their imbalances can affect their emotions. The three most common hormone issues Dr. Tassone sees are low testosterone, estrogen deficiency, and subclinical hypothyroidism. These imbalances often show up as fatigue, low libido, mood swings, or weight gain. Many women are told their labs look fine, but a closer look reveals the real story. Testosterone is not just a “male hormone.” In fact, it’s the most abundant hormone in a woman’s body. Dr. Tassone explains that women can still have symptoms like brain fog and lack of motivation when their levels are at the low end of “normal.” Just nudging them to the right level can bring a huge shift in energy and drive. Many women still worry that hormone therapy causes cancer, but that fear is based on outdated data. Dr. Tassone breaks down how the original study that sparked this concern used synthetic hormones, and newer research shows that bioidentical estrogen may actually improve longevity and reduce disease risk. Birth control pills are often used to mask hormonal symptoms rather than resolve them. Dr. Tassone sees young women with low libido, mood changes, or fatigue caused by the very medication meant to help. He encourages a deeper look at root causes, especially when birth control is being used for anything other than contraception. Dr. Tassone’s SHINES protocol goes beyond medication. By including elements like spirituality, nutrient support, movement, and even energetic therapies, it gives women multiple paths to feel better.
