    55 on a field of 20-30 somethings isn't a handicap, it's a flex

2 weekends ago I competed in the Apex Athlete competition — think NFL combine for regular people — as the only 55-year-old on a field of Olympians, ex-NFL athletes, and collegiate athletes. I placed 47th out of 49 women. And it was one of the best days I've had. This episode is about what I learned by simply showing up — and why putting yourself out there IS being your best.Where to find me or work with me:Website: IronStrongFitness.net Instagram: @IronStrongFit Small group strength training in Jersey City: https://www.ironstrongfitness.net/scheduleEpisodes drop once a week.

Even at 55, I Still Have to Push Myself to Show Up

I get FOMO at events I've missed. I even get annoyed seeing the posts after I've missed the event but it is because I know how in person events do make real connections. In this episode, I'm coming off my 3rd BellFest and talking about why in person will always beat social media DM's every single time— no matter how good your DMs are. This episode is a short reminder of how AI and screen time will never replace in person sparkle.Say yes.Where to find me or work with me:Website: IronStrongFitness.net Instagram: @IronStrongFit Small group strength training in Jersey City: https://www.ironstrongfitness.net/scheduleEpisodes drop once a week.

Why I Stopped Training for Strength (And Started Training for Athleticism)

Two men made assumptions about my all-women's class — and they were dead wrong. In this episode I share what happened, why it lit a fire in me, and what it has to do with why I train for athleticism now instead of just strength. The Best Business Advice I Ever Got — And Why Most Personal Trainers Never Hear It

When I started her career at Equinox, I was instructed to sell the way big gyms sell — fear-based assessments, bulk packages, session discounts. I hated it and never looked back. In this episode Ibreaks down why copying corporate sales structure can quietly work against you as a self-employed person, and I share the two business practices an experienced personal trainer shared that offers me predictable income and makes me feel valued in my own work.Where to find me or work with me:Website: IronStrongFitness.net Instagram: @IronStrongFit Small group strength training in Jersey City: https://www.ironstrongfitness.net/scheduleEpisodes drop once a week.

Zoom Has a Ceiling — On My Business and My Relationships

I just got back from five days in Lisbon helping my friend Teresa open her kettlebell gym. “Bone on Bone,” Arthritis, and the Moment You Start Feeling Broken

At some point in midlife, many of us are given a diagnosis that changes how we move — not because of pain, but because of how the words land.“Bone on bone.”“You have arthritis.”“Degenerative.”In this episode, I share my take on how medical diagnoses are meant to inform — but how they often end up making people feel broken. We talk about:What “bone on bone” actually means on imagingWhy arthritis does not reliably explain painHow common disc bulges and degeneration are with ageWhy imaging findings and pain don’t always matchHow fear and loss of trust — not damage — often change how we moveWhy doctors still recommend movement and exercise, even with arthritisHow to rebuild confidence in your body without ignoring medical realityThis is not about dismissing medicine. It’s about understanding context — and learning how to move forward without letting a diagnosis become a verdict.Research & references mentioned:Brinjikji et al., 2015 — American Journal of Neuroradiology: Systematic review showing disc bulges, degeneration, and herniations increase with age and are present in both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals; imaging findings alone do not reliably explain pain.Bedson & Croft, 2008 — Arthritis Research & Therapy: Radiographic osteoarthritis findings do not consistently correlate with pain severity.Hunter & Bierma-Zeinstra, 2019 — The Lancet: Osteoarthritis pain is multifactorial and poorly explained by imaging alone.Intro to Plyometrics for Women 50+: Sign up hereWhere to find me or work with me:Website: IronStrongFitness.netInstagram: @IronStrongFitSmall group strength training in Jersey City: View scheduleNew episodes drop once a week.

Menopause Influencers Are Missing the Point About Jumping

Jumping for bone density matters. But it’s not the whole story. After watching my 86-year-old dad trip and fall, I started thinking differently about what actually prevents falls as we age. It’s not standing still and balancing on one leg — it’s how fast you can react when something unexpected shows up.In this episode, I talk about:Why “jump for bone density” advice is incompleteWhat plyometrics really train (and why stomping misses the point)Reaction time, fast muscle fibers, and staying quick on your feet as we ageWhy most falls happen while moving — not balancingThis is a conversation about training to stay nimble, responsive, and upright in real life.Intro to Plyometrics for Women 50+ Early-bird registration opens this week! Does Ignoring What Happened This Weekend Actually Protect Your Peace?

This episode is a timely reflection on the murder of Alex Pretti, the VA ICU nurse, and why events that happen “far away” still affect us deeply.I talk about:Why the news feels heavy, anxiety-producing, and hard to look atHow silence and avoidance can increase feelings of powerlessnessThree simple ways I take action when I’m not a volunteer or organizer type of personWhy “echo chambers” can be a place of empowerment, not weaknessThis is about feeling, naming what matters to you, and taking one small action — even when everything feels overwhelming.Organization I mentioned in the episode: 5calls.orgWhere to find me or work with me:Intro to Plyometrics for Women 50+ waitlist:  https://ironstrongfitness.net/9-week-online-intro-to-plyoWebsite: IronStrongFitness.netInstagram: @IronStrongFit My small group strength training schedule in Jersey City: https://www.ironstrongfitness.net/scheduleEpisodes drop once a week.

Representation & Perimenopause: Why Seeing Yourself Matters

In this episode, I dive into the importance of representation, especially when it comes to perimenopause and healthcare. After speaking as a panelist at Senator Angela McKnight’s Power in the Pause: Thriving Through Menopause event, I left with a powerful reminder—who we see in positions of influence and expertise matters.I also discuss the deep-rooted mistrust many African Americans have toward the medical system due to historical exploitation, and how this affects healthcare decisions today. Beyond medicine, I connect this to fitness, where representation is just as crucial. It’s why I always make a point to mention my age—because in an industry dominated by younger fitness influencers, I want women over 50 to see what’s possible for them.Where to find me or work with me:Instagram: @IronStrongFit Website: IronStrongFitness.netMy small group strength training schedule in Jersey City: https://www.ironstrongfitness.net/scheduleEpisodes drop once a week

Why are there so few women leading in fitness? After 13 years in the industry, I’ve noticed that major conferences, certifications, and mentorship opportunities are dominated by men.
