Eine der letzten großen Missernten der europäischen Geschichte wurde durch die sogenannte Kartoffelfäule ausgelöst. Diese Pilzkrankheit vernichtete 1845, befördert von den ungewöhnlichen, feuchtkalten Witterungsbedingungen auf dem europäischen Kontinent, bedeutende Teile der Kartoffelernte. Neben Belgien und den Niederlanden war besonders Irland von der „Kartoffelkrankheit“, wie sie im damaligen Volksmund genannt wurde, betroffen.  Etwa eine Million Iren starben, etwa doppelt so viele verließen die Insel und wanderten aus. Aber auch in der Provinz Rheinhessen, heute Mainz und Umgebung, gab es eine Teuerungskrise. In diesem Podcast besprechen wir mit Nicolas Schreckenbach, welche Formen diese Teuerungskrise vor Ort annahm und wie die Obrigkeiten reagierten. Auf dem Weg dorthin klären wir auch die Arbeitsweisen der modernen Klimageschichte und tippen auch die Frage an, ob diese Krise auch das Vertrauen in die legitime Herrschaft so erschütterte, dass die Teuerungen zu den revolutionären Unruhen rund um das Jahr 1848 beitrugen.Literaturtipps:Abel, Wilhelm: Agrarkrisen und Agrarkonjunktur. Im Alter von 84 Jahren trat die Umweltaktivistin Jean Hill entschlossen gegen die Plastikflut in der kleinen Stadt Concord in Massachusetts an. In einem Bürgerentscheid (dem ersten hierzu in den USA) wurden Einwegplastikflaschen unter einem Liter in der ganzen Kommune verboten. Im dritten Podcast einer dreiteiligen plastikhistorischen Reihe schauen wir uns die komplexe Welt des Lobbyismus rund um das Thema Plastik an: Wie können Bürgerinitiativen und Umweltschutzorganisationen gegen die Interessen der Plastikindustrie ankämpfen – und wie versuchen diese wiederum, politische Entscheidungen zu beeinflussen?
