It's the Socceroos vs Mo Salah, France look untouchable and we have a $30m player in our camp | World Cup chat with Niav Owens, SBS host of the FIFA World Cup

It's about time we talked about the World Cup. The Socceroos have (arguably) defied expectations and made it through the group stage. Now we play Egypt in the first knockout round on Saturday morning. Is it winnable?  Niav Owens thinks so, and she knows her football. The host of SBS' World Cup coverage joins us to chat our chances of progressing to the round of 16 and meeting Messi and Argentina (unless Cabo Verde pull off the biggest ever World Cup shock), why this squad is so exciting, and what the A-League does with a $30mil player when Barcelona come calling.  Plus, Harry Kewell captured our hearts in 2006 and now he's doing it again 20 years later, how we can shut down Egyptian superstar Mo Salah, Norwegian crowd rowing vibes and World Cup knockout-round tactics. And of course France are looking unfairly good, England haven't quite got into gear, and why everyone suddenly thinks they’re a football expert. The only place to watch the FIFA World Cup is on SBS and SBS on Demand. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The “Doping Olympics” actually happened, and athletes took the money?

The Enhanced Games were meant to shake up sport, letting athletes use performance enhancers to break records and make big money. Enough time has passed for us to properly digest the morally grey area that encompasses the event, and compose our thoughts. We have many of them. We talk about this and much more: Athletes openly using performance-enhancing substances Prize money that dwarfs Olympic payouts, how can it be? And the awkward twist…clean athletes were still winning  Is this the future of sport? Or does it completely miss the point of why we love it? Plus, the Olympics might be heading into full reality TV mode: Ninja Warrior as an Olympic sport? Please no. Leave the Olympics alone!   Harvey Norman love sport. The insane logistics behind the NFL's first ever Aussie game | What can we expect from American football at The 'G?

The NFL's first ever game in Australia is a couple of months away; the San Fran 49ers take on the LA Rams at the MCG in September. Are we prepared for an American sports takeover?  With Steph Rogers from the 49ers, we learn what it takes to move an entire American football team across the Pacific ocean, why the sport is gaining momentum in Australia, and whether the players think it's really a good idea. Not many athletes have to travel 15 hours to games.  Plus, we chat ice hockey, AFL/NFL comparisons and whether it's going to be the biggest spectacle we'll see at the MCG this year.    Harvey Norman love sport. Luke Bateman left Rugby League, beat addiction and made half a million Booktok friends.

Former NRL player Luke Bateman joins Two Good Sports for one of those conversations that starts with rugby league and ends somewhere very different.  From growing up in western Queensland and chasing the footy dream, Luke opens up about life inside professional rugby league, the culture that comes with it, and the very real impact of gambling harm that's embedded in Australian sport.  Luke talks about his battles with addiction, therapy and embracing his inner child (Little Luke), before we turn the page and get to the second act: books, BookTok fame and writing his first novel. Plus a few reality TV stories, some fantasy hot takes, and a chat about the one book you'd take on a desert island.    Harvey Norman love sport. Kim K at Monaco and $40 Mil at the MCG

This week we find ourselves right in the middle of the matchup between sport and pop culture. From Kim Kardashian’s grid-side appearance in Monaco to the ongoing debate around celebrities, influencers and who “deserves” to be at major sporting events, it's all creating a lot of debate around who should get to be pitch, track, or court side.  There’s also a look at the economics of fandom (and why not everyone’s thrilled about courtside seats going to famous plus-ones), plus a very rogue but excellent Timothée Chalamet origin story. And then, a moment that cuts through all of it - a Big Freeze story that reminds you what sport can look like at its best, featuring a jaw-dropping act of generosity that has to be heard to be believed.   Harvey Norman love sport. Matildas legend Lydia Williams previews the Socceroos’ World Cup: we're in a group of "death-ish"? Plus the worst sledge a player can ever get

The consensus in America is that the Socceroos are an easy draw. We could get offended, or we could just see it as USA doing USA things. What is offensive though is the worst sledge a footballer can ever receive - and Matildas icon SBS FIFA World Cup Commentator Lydia Williams has received it. She shares it with us to general shock in the studio. We also preview the Socceroos’ World Cup campaign and our chances of progressing from the group of “death-ish.” We talk through Australia’s chances of going all the way (imagine), the tactical impact of extreme heat and mandated drinks breaks, the players to watch, and why a defensive game plan could actually work in the Socceroos’ favour.  Also in this episode: Norway took one of the all-time team photos - what should ours have looked like? Gold medal winner Harry Garside on cutting through the BS in professional boxing, and how to find meaning among the masculinity

He won a bronze medal in Tokyo in 2020, and a gold two years before at the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast. He's a fiercely competitive boxer, but there's a lot more to Harry Garside than what you see in the ring. He's known for challenging stereotypes around masculinity and was a finalist on I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here. He challenges stereotypes in our chat today in more ways than one. We had him on a year ago but a lot has changed since then. We find out what he's been up to, what's next, and how he approaches boxing's “trashy” culture and fake tough-guy act. We chat insanely long triathlons, identity, and what happens when your whole life has been built on winning. There’s camping detours, existential spirals, and deep explorations into masculinity (particularly among young men in Australia), purpose and why life might not actually be that serious, as one of Australia’s most fascinating athletes tries to figure out what comes next as he approaches 30.    Harvey Norman love sport. What does it really take to be a sports journo? And...I wrote a book!

Georgie Tunny is a published author - cue the celebrations! We talk launch week chaos, the emotional rollercoaster of releasing a debut novel, and the very weird reality of building a career in sports media that served as inspiration for the story. 'Over To You' is a work of fiction, let us be clear on that. From her first newsroom disasters to national TV, Georgie opens up about ambition, burnout, female friendship (thanks Gelmi) and the stories behind the book everyone’s talking about. It's a behind the scenes looks at Aussie sports newsrooms. Is there any other workplace where the c-word is so normalised? Remembering the great Neale Daniher | His close friend Tim Watson talks his life, legacy, and what we can do to help the cause

He built and commandeered an army. An army who donned blue beanies and plunged into the ice and took action, knowing the leader would one day lose his life to the enemy. This is a bit of a different episode for us. Following the passing of Neale Daniher after a 13-year fight with motor neurone disease, we take a moment to reflect on a life that changed far more than footy. We hear Neale's own words from 2019, a message for his grandson about courage, responsibility, and facing life when it isn’t fair.  Then Tim Watson, former teammate and close friend of Neale's, who joins us to share what he was really like: the competitor, the conductor, the mate… and the force of nature who built a movement that united a nation. The Daniher family mobilised an army to take the fight to MND. And now, as Neale told us, we play on.  A conversation about legacy, resilience, and what we can do to make the biggest difference.   Harvey Norman love sport. Unpacking the insane State of Origin Game 1 moments, French Open diamonds and Making Essendon Great Again

We put State of Origin Game I on trial, breaking down the Kalyn Ponga send‑off, Nathan Cleary’s match‑turning moments, and whether New South Wales truly deserved the win. At Roland‑Garros, Aryna Sabalenka was wearing diamonds while calling for increased prize money - it sparked a conversation about double standards and the economics of tennis, but why can't women just support women? Novak or Janik never got asked those questions. In Formula One, we explain why tension, rivalries and team politics are central to the sport’s appeal. And in the AFL, we examine Essendon’s coaching crossroads, the resurgence of the James Hird debate, and what it says about identity, nostalgia and unfinished business in football.   Harvey Norman love sport. The Women's Maroons on hungover fan meets, smutty BookTok and how to get State of Origin where it belongs

Ahead of Game III of the 2026 Women’s State of Origin, Georgie is joined by Jess Elliston, Lauren Brown and Jada Ferguson for a very Queensland conversation about heartbreak, pride, and why this game still matters even when the series is quote/unquote 'gone'. The girls talk about what camp feels like after a tough loss, the unspoken no‑dickheads policy, and why you’d still run through a wall for the jersey. Plus, there’s chat about debuting for Queensland, copping nonsense online (why are the trolls always called Kevin?), and why starting a season with an Origin series makes absolutely no sense. There are Broncos premiership flashbacks, security being outrun, meeting fans behind a pair of sunnies at 7am, and a late‑episode pivot into smutty BookTok that nobody was prepared for. Glaring State of Origin omissions, a 46 year-old goalkeeper and which NRL star should the Bears entice to Perth?

State of Origin is almost here, and the biggest talking point is Georgie's husband* being left out the Queensland squad. We break down the Origin selections, what the notable player absences means for the Blues and Maroons, and how Billy Slater might be thinking about form, fitness and the long game.  Sam Kerr got the perfect farewell at Chelsea with a goal, as she looks ahead to the next stage of her career, there were flowers for Matildas legend Melissa Barbieri - an A-League champion at 46 years old, and Ross Lyon surprised everyone when he revealed a Labubu obsession. And we are sending so much love to Jai Arrow, his family and teammates, as he revealed a devastating MND diagnosis. It highlights the power of sport and the importance of the Big Freeze - we're talking with Bec Daniher next week to hear all about the event and the incredible work the organisation does. *Reece Walsh   Harvey Norman love sport. $500,000 worth of AFL guernsey, and who'd be a coach?

Scott Pendlebury’s milestone weekend is coming up; his record-breaking game approaches and it's ignited a debate on the proceeds from the sale of match‑worn guernseys, some expected to fetch eye‑watering prices. We chime in with our thoughts on player branding, and where the league draws the line on personal profit.  It was also a brutal week for coaches. Michael Voss’ exit at Carlton, Ivan Cleary’s surprise decision to step away from Penrith, and ongoing pressure across both codes shows how unforgiving the job can be. Add serious injury concerns, fan backlash and endless speculation, and it was a hectic week if you're in charge of a footy team.    Harvey Norman love sport. Rescuing the World Cup fan experience and a Met Gala debate

The FIFA World Cup is a month away and already we're having things taken from us: at the time of recording, the Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation had announced there would be no more live matches shown at Fed Square in Melbourne, scene of some iconic moments (see Mathew Leckie's goal celebrations in 2022).  But then, on Thursday afternoon we had breaking news - Premier Jacinta Allan intervened to overturn the decision and bring the games back to Federation Square. We debate why it matters so much to Aussie fans.  Also this week it was our Super Bowl - the Met Gala. It was an event bankrolled by billionaires with questionable ethics; should we be having such lavish displays of wealth with the world in its current state? We discuss it, but also there's no getting away from the incredible fits - who was giving ‘hot parrot’? Why did we see what looked like a Dotti dress from 2014? Never fear, we make an attempt to link it all back to sport (where was Lewis Hamilton?).    Harvey Norman love sport. He's also coach of the GWS Giants, a former premiership player with Port Adelaide, and an all-round excellent sport.  Adam Kingsley gives us a look behind the curtain at the Giants, the truth behind that famous half-time spray, and his motivations for coaching after a successful career as a player.  We get the logic behind the infamous stand-up desk he fashions for himself on flights, the story from his playing days where he was told he “cost Port a premiership”, and why his old teammates still won’t let him forget it. A week of bad sports: the AFL Appeals Board, an Aussie Olympian and Scott Pendlebury's arts and crafts project

Abbey has too many bad sports this week, so we're supplementing Good Sport, Bad Sport with a new segment: Ab-solutely Not. One of them is the reaction to Lance Collard’s ban in the AFL; the handling of the case by the appeals board was completely at odds with the ‘zero tolerance’ messaging the AFL says it lives by. Then it's Scott Pendlebury's special golden guernsey - whose idea was that? And also this week, Aussie Olympian Ryan Gregson was on the For The Kudos podcast and made some pretty outrageous comments. We’d never heard the term ‘getting chicked’ before, but are we having misogynistic comments like that? Ab-solutely not. For someone whose own partner is an outstanding athlete and marathon runner herself, it was a very disappointing comment. Plus in the NRL, the new PNG team the Chiefs are going big on the recruitment. One of those is West Tigers’ Jarome Luai – he’ll join the new team after the 2027 season on a $1.2 million a season deal. And it’s tax free. But Jarome says he’s not going there for the money and it’s going to make a difference to a lot of people. Who’s going to follow him next? And why aren’t the new Perth Bears making such big moves? Never fear, there is a good sport: shout out Millie Elliot – playing Game 1 of State of Origin yesterday, just 6 months after having a baby. Incredible.   Harvey Norman love sport. Last week there was a story that went far beyond sport. What happened to the Iranian women’s football team during the Asian Cup was about safety, and impossible choices. These athletes came to Australia to compete and were instead forced to navigate war, surveillance and global attention, simply for playing football. We wanted to talk about what that means, why some players have now been granted asylum, and how unfair it is that women chosen for their talent were put in such danger.   Harvey Norman love sport. Tom Hanks at the footy? That just sums up the craziest week in sport

Abbey finally hits the Formula One as a punter and confirms it’s the best day out - until heartbreak strikes when hometown hero Oscar Piastri crashes out before the race even begins. Add in a Matildas Asian Cup draw that makes the path to the final even harder, Tom Hanks casually rocking up to a Giants game, and endless AFL-NRL headline wars as Round Zero spars with the Vegas round, and you get one of the biggest weeks in sport.   Harvey Norman love sport. Matildas Pressure, Lewis Hamilton’s Aura & Vale Dennis Cometti

It’s been a big week in sport. Footy is back across both codes, the F1 season kicked off in Melbourne, the Matildas narrowly missed out on topping the group in the Asian Cup and the calendar is absolutely heaving. The AFL/NRL headline war fired up as Andrew Dillon floats Aussie Rules at the Olympics (respectfully unhinged), Abbey recounts meeting Lewis Hamilton and his unmatched aura, and we pay tribute to the late, great Dennis Cometti — a once‑in‑a‑generation voice who shaped how Australians remember sport.    Harvey Norman love sport.
