On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand: MATTHEW 7:24-29
Sean’s newest book has just been released: Understanding Christianity: Biblical Answers to Life’s Most Important Questions You can purchase it here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HC7WTLQZ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title Dr. Sean Cole concludes the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 7:42-29 You’re either a genuine Christian who proves your salvation not only by a profession of faith, but because your heart has been changed by grace alone. Or you merely “say” you’re a Christian, but there has been no internal change by the Holy Spirit. It’s a profession of faith without possession of faith. There is no middle ground. In this conclusion, you’re either a wise builder or a foolish builder. Since Jesus ends the sermon with these sharp contrasts between the two builders and their houses, this sermon explores this passage in FIVE areas of contrast. What does it look like to build wisely upon the rock, and then look at the opposite of what it looks like to build foolishly upon the sand. Who Exaclty Were the...NEPHILIM?
In this episode, Dr. Sean Cole presents the two historical views of the identity of the Nephilim and argues for the Reformed interpretation of Genesis 6:1-4. Genesis Chapter Six has sparked some of the most contested and controversial interpretations concerning the identity of the Nephilim. Were these “mighty men” in fact giants? Were they the offspring of fallen angels who procreated with human women? How do we understand this very difficult passage of Scripture? There are two predominant views on this, and history has split right down the middle on which side to take. The first is the historic Reformed view, held by Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Matthew Henry, Bavinck, Berkhof, and R. C. Sproul. The first view holds that the sons of God are those in the lineage of Seth, the godly line that intermarried with the ungodly line of Cain. Intermarriage between the Israelites and pagans was strictly prohibited by God throughout the Old Testament. So this view holds that Seth’s line—the godly line—did the unthinkable, and instead of marrying within the godly line of Seth, they went outside it and found the daughters of Cain attractive and took them as their wives. The second view was held by the early church fathers, who were influenced by the Book of Enoch and Second Temple Judaism. In addition, many within Dispensationalism hold this view. The Book of Enoch (particularly 1 Enoch 6–16) interprets the “sons of God” as angels (the Watchers) who married women and fathered giant offspring (200 BC-100 AD). According to this understanding of Genesis 6, the sons of God are fallen angels who come to earth, have sexual relationships with human women, and produce an ungodly, demonic offspring called the Nephilim. Judge Not! Matthew 7:1-6
You hear non-Christians using this phrase all the time: "Don’t be judgmental. Don’t judge. You have no right to judge what I’m doing." You’ve probably met someone who has told you that the reason they don’t come to church or that they are not a Christian is because they think Christians are judgmental. We are hypocritical. We are intolerant and unaccepting of other views. This puts us in a tough spot because nobody wants to come off as judgmental, intolerant, or hypocritical. We who are Bible-believing Christians who want to remain faithful to Jesus and yet love our neighbors, HOW do we share the gospel and live the Christian life without coming across as jerks or intolerant or hateful bigots who are judgmental? Jesus’ words here in Matthew 7:1-6 have been misunderstood and misapplied, so we need to understand exactly what He’s commanding us to do. Dr. Sean Cole preaches four truths from this passage. The Greatest Cure for ANXIETY: Matthew 6:24-35
Since God, instead of money, is your master, you should never be anxious. It’s, in fact, disobedient to you, Master, to be anxious about what He will provide for all your needs. Jesus gets right at the heart of anxiety, which is a natural response when we struggle with finances, or we struggle to make ends meet. In fact, the word “anxious” appears SIX times in this passage. Here is the main point or big idea of this text: The greatest cure for anxiety is to seek God's reign and righteousness above all else. The Heart of Biblical FASTING: Matthew 6:16-18
First, fasting is often neglected as a regular practice for spiritual growth. Second, fasting is not mandated as a regular practice for spiritual growth. Since fasting is not practiced very often by evangelical Christians, and there may be some confusion or questions about this topic, Dr. Sean Cole answers FOUR questions to help us grow in our understanding of fasting. Question One: What is a fast? Question Two: What are the types of fasts? Question Three: What are the wrong ways to fast? Question Four: What are the proper purposes for Biblical fasting? Are Your Prayers Thoroughly God-Centered of Self-Centered? Matthew 6:9-10
In this sermon, Dr. Sean Cole preaches the first three petitions in the Lord's Prayer. Here’s the main focus of the first three requests: Our prayers must be thoroughly God-centered instead of self-centered. Request Number One: We passionately ask that Your name be hallowed! Request Number Two: We passionately ask that Your kingdom come! Request Number Three: We passionately ask that Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven! Prayer: The Life Blood of All True Believers: Matthew 6:7-13
Dr. Sean Cole preaches an overview of the Lord's Prayer. He addresses the following topics: The prayer's brevity, God's sovereignty, and it's strategy. The Lord's Prayer serves as a template for not only WHAT to pray for but also HOW to pray. The address to our Father in heaven shows us that we can approach God with boldness, reverence, and togetherness. Do you need to be taught to pray? Is your prayer life weak, dry, and lifeless? Do you need some major encouragement in both how to pray and what to pray for? Can you truly say that prayer is your lifeblood? The chief exercise of your faith? The primary way you live out your Christianity? Scottish Preacher Robert Murray M'Cheyne said this, “What a man is on his knees before God, that he is, and nothing more.” Sean has released a new book on prayer called 30 Days of Praying the Scriptures, and you can purchase it here: https://bit.ly/49XaYQN Sean's book, Compassionate Calvinism: Defending the Doctrines of Grace Without Being a Jerk, has been released. Man's Praise or God's Glory? Matthew 6:1-6
In Matthew 6:1-6, Jesus teaches us to beware of seeking man’s praise instead of God’s glory. Verse 1 is Jesus’s main point in this section of the Sermon on the Mount, and he will give three areas of personal worship or devotion: giving to the needy, prayer, and fasting. The idea of practicing righteousness is a good thing. This is not legalism or working FOR our salvation, but being a devoted follower of Christ who seeks to glorify Him through how we live. What kind of righteousness should we practice? A righteousness that is greater than the Pharisees, which means that it is not external show or doing things to impress others, but the secret things of the heart, where only God sees, and you can’t fake it. We should give to the needy. We should pray. We should fast. These are practices that we, as believers, should incorporate into our lives as we grow in maturity. The problem is when we do these things to “be seen” by others. Sean's new book, Compassionate Calvinism: Defending the Doctrines of Grace Without Being a Jerk, has been released. STUMP THE PASTOR!!!
Dr. Sean Cole answers questions spontaneously from the class, without notes or preparation, during "Stump the Pastor" night. The questions asked ranged from the scapegoat legend from the Talmud to the identity of Melchizedek. Pastor Sean answered the question about whether John 8's account of the women caught in adultery should be included in the Bible. This led to a discussion on textual variants and the ending of Mark's gospel. Another question was asked about the Book of Enoch. Be Imitators of God: MATTHEW 5:48
Dr. Sean Cole preached a special Mother's Day sermon on parenting, based on Matthew 5:48. This section of the Sermon on the Mount started at 5:17 and now ends at 5:48 as a summary of the six antitheses. Jesus has addressed six laws or issues that the religious leaders were twisting: (1) murder, (2) adultery, (3) divorce, (4) oaths and vows, (5) retaliation and revenge, and (6) loving our enemies. These laws were all addressed in the Old Testament, but Jesus takes us deeper into God’s requirements by getting to the heart of the issue. Where is our heart? What dominates our thoughts? Do we merely try to conform to some outward list of rules and regulations, or do we truly see God’s law as not only the perfect standard of our outward conduct, but also the inward condition of our hearts? Here is the main point or central idea I want us to explore today: Parents should imitate their heavenly Father, not perfectly, but intentionally. The Vindicator of All Wrongs: MATTHEW 5:38-42
The main idea of Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5:38-42 is that we should trust the Lord to vindicate us for our wrongs. This passage has been one of the most misunderstood portions of the Sermon on the Mount, resulting in some strange interpretations and practices. Does this mean we are to be doormats who give up all rights? Does this mean we should never use or endorse violence in any situation? Does this mean that we should be pacifists and not serve in the military or law enforcement? Listen and find out as Dr. Sean Cole explains this passage in detail. Live Truthfully! MATTHEW 5:33-37
Here is the main point of Jesus’ teaching in this passage: Live so truthfully that your word is never questioned. In this sermon, Dr. Sean Cole answers three questions of this text: First, how did the Old Testament explain vows and oaths? (vs 33) Second, how were the religious leaders abusing the taking of oaths and vows? (vs. 34-36) Third, what is the main point of Jesus’ teaching on oaths? (vs. 37) By nature, we are all guilty liars who exaggerate, break our promises, use careless words, and at times are not trustworthy or reliable. We desperately need a Savior who is the Ultimate Truth Teller and the ultimate Promise Maker to rescue us from our sin by dying on the cross, forgiving us, and granting us eternal life in heaven. Only Jesus gives you the power to live so truthfully that your word is never questioned. ROMANS 14:1-15:13: Disputable Matters, Christian Freedom, and the Conscience
In Romans 14:1-15:13, Paul addresses the issue of disputable matters or issues of Christian freedom that are not specifically addressed in Scripture. Dr. Sean Cole teaches how we should relate to one another as believers in Christian unity when we disagree on non-negotiable dogmas or doctrines, but on preferences or personal convictions. A church can experience two extremes: One: Legalism—elevating non-essentials or preferences to the level of dogma and making them a test of orthodoxy and conditions of fellowship. Two: License—abandoning the clear teachings of Scripture for an “anything goes” attitude in church A healthy church needs to have a: Clear stance on issues of dogma Clear explanation of matters of doctrine, with some flexibility to disagree Non-judgmental, non-legalistic atmosphere when it comes to secondary issues and preferences Sean's new book, Compassionate Calvinism: Defending the Doctrines of Grace Without Being a Jerk, has been released. ROMANS 13:8-14: Holy Living
In Romans 13:8-14, Paul teaches believers to cast off works of darkness and put on the Lord Jesus Christ. He urges us to live holy lives as we anticipate the Second Coming of Christ. Instead of just saying “no” to sin, we need to see Christ in all of His glory and find that He is more captivating, beautiful, glorious, and worthwhile than the sin before us. A Sinful Desire or a Single Devotion? MATTHEW 5:27-30
Dr. Sean Cole continues through the Sermon on the Mount. Pastor Sean distilled this passage down into one crucial question: Will your heart choose sinful desires or a single devotion? The single devotion has a double meaning. First and foremost, it means that you have a single devotion to Christ alone as your Lord. Will You Choosee Rage or Reconciliation? MATTHEW 5:21-26
The main point of this passage comes in a question I want to ask you today: Will your heart choose rage or reconciliation? In this sermon, Dr. Sean Cole explores THREE truths that emerge from this text. First, what is murder according to God’s Law? Second, God’s Law involved not only actions, but attitudes of the heart and mouth. Third, God’s moral law always has a positive element. In reality, we were responsible for the murder of Jesus. Even though our literal hands did not nail him to the cross, our sins put Him there. Our guilt, shame, and anger of the heart deserve the death penalty, and Jesus took our place. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus—the innocent, spotless Lamb of God- was murdered in our place on the cross and took the punishment we deserved. ROMANS 12:9-21: Marks of A Christian
In Romans 12:9-21, Paul gives us a great list of very practical ways we live out our faith. This is sanctification in action. And it starts with love. Never lose sight of what God has done for you in the gospel. Let that grace and your identity in Christ serve as the foundation and motivation for you to live a life of JOYFUL Obedience to Jesus out of gratitude for what He’s done. We saw the need to live a lifestyle of worship with transformed minds. We saw the need to use our spiritual gifts in service to others and to build up the church. Dr. Sean Cole continues this study of Romans and teaches this list of marks of a true Christian. SALT and LIGHT: MATTHEW 5:13-16
Matthew 5:13-16 concludes the Beatitudes before Jesus transitions into the Sermon on the Mount, which is how we live out our identity as believers in the Kingdom. Jesus begins with our identity in the Beatitudes before He tells us how to obey or live out our faith as His followers. This section is a bridge between our identity—those blessed by Christ—and what we do—becoming useful to Christ. The final Beatitude was about persecution and how the world will treat us. The word’s influence and impact on us, citizens of the Kingdom. Jesus transitions to describe the exact opposite: How we as believers and citizens of the Kingdom influence and impact the world and respond to those who persecute us. Jesus uses two examples from the everyday life of those ancient Israelites to show them not only WHO they are, but also what they should do. Are you living your purpose? Or to ask it another way: Are you useful for Christ? Here is the big idea or central theme from this passage: Those blessed by Christ become useful for Christ. When Dying is Gain: MATTHEW 5:10-12
Dr. Sean Cole preaches the final Beatitude, and it is shocking. It is so countercultural. So counter-intuitive. So backwards and upside down. This final Beatitude really tells us what the result will be when we actively live out the other Beatitudes as a constant way of life. In this sermon, he asks THREE questions of this passage of Scripture. First of all, is persecution truly a reality in our world today? Second, what is the root cause of this persecution? And thirdly, why is it a joy to be persecuted? ROMANS 12:1-2: Living Sacrifice
Romans 1-11 teaches what God has done for us in the gospel and focuses totally on our identity in Christ. Paul spent a lot of time on justification by faith and what God the Father has done to save us. He focuses on our election and God’s grace and how, from first to last, God has rescued us as guilty sinners by sending Jesus to die in our place. The mercies of God in chapters 1-11 of Romans are the totality of what God has done for us in His sovereign grace in making us a new creation in Christ. In essence, what Paul is saying is that in light of all that God has done for us in making us this new creation in Christ, in light of this wonderful identity we have in Christ, and in light of the rich mercies of God as our foundation and our motivation, we are in turn, called to present our bodies as living sacrifices in lives of worship back to God. ROMANS 11
If Romans Chapter 9 focused on God’s sovereignty in salvation, Chapter 10 focused on human responsibility—the Jews were stubborn and refused to call on the name of Jesus to be saved. Here’s the question Chapter 11 answers: Is this a permanent situation for ethnic Jews? Will they refuse the gospel forever? Do You Want a Deeper Fellowship With Christ? Matthew 5:8
Dr. Sean Cole continues through the Beatitudes. Here is the main point or big idea of this Beatitude: A heart purified BY Christ leads to deeper fellowship WITH Christ. ROMANS 10: Call Upon the Name of the Lord
Dr. Sean Cole continues the study of Romans. In Chapter 10, we find out that human responsibility is behind why the Jews are not saved—it was their own fault due to their stubborn disobedience. There are two simultaneous truths taught in the Bible that are NOT IN CONFLICT or contradictory: God is absolutely sovereign in His decree of predestination Humans are responsible and accountable This may not make sense when you ask, “Why are some people not saved?” Two correct biblical answers: God did not sovereignly choose them to be saved They rejected the gospel and did not respond in faith Paul teaches these truths in Romans 10. Why are the accursed and cut off? Why are the Gentiles coming to faith in Christ in large numbers, but ethnic Jews are refusing to believe in Jesus? You may not like the answer Paul gives, but we have to deal with it. Two basic answers: Just because you are ethnically Jewish does not automatically guarantee that you will be saved—that was the presumption of the Jews. They thought they were automatically going to heaven based on their lineage or ethnicity. God chooses some people to be saved, while passing over others who will not be saved—this is how God has always done things. Dr. Sean Cole explains the difficulty of Romans 9 and also addresses the difficult doctrine of reprobation. He also answers the following four objections: Unconditional election makes God appear unfair or unloving. God is not obligated to save anyone; therefore, His choice to save some does not imply unfairness. If unconditional election is valid, then God must be blamed for sinners ending up in hell instead of sinners freely rejecting Christ and facing the consequences of their choices. God predestines only a small group to heaven while condemning the rest of humanity to hell. If God has already determined who is elect, why should we pray for and evangelize the lost? Because of what God has done for us in showing us mercy in our spiritual bankruptcy and lifting us out of the pit of our sin, we, in turn, have a new heart and a new attitude toward others. We show mercy because we have been shown mercy. We are merciful because God was merciful to us in Christ and the gospel. Pastor Sean identifies THREE specific issues related to this passage. It speaks more of the choosing of sinners to be saved. God predestined His people in eternity past, meaning that His preordained plan will certainly and infallibly come to pass according to His sovereign will. Those God foreknew and predestined, He also CALLED. When that foreknown, chosen, predestined sinner hears the gospel call given outwardly through the preaching of the gospel, God also does an internal, effectual call that PRODUCES by grace the faith and repentance needed to come to Christ. Those whom God sovereignly and effectually calls will exercise saving faith and thus be justified. When did God’s foreknowing occur? In eternity past. When did God’s predestining occur? In eternity past. When did God’s calling occur? At a point in time when you were born again When did God’s justifying you occur? When you had faith in Jesus. When will you be glorified? In the future! It hasn’t happened yet. From eternity past to eternity future, God has sovereignly ordained and planned out to the most minute detail your salvation. This goes against everything in our American culture and in human nature to be meek. The third Beatitude can be summed up in this statement: Those who act as if they are nothing will, in the end, possess everything. The world doesn’t understand meekness. We as Christians don’t understand meekness. Why would those who act like they are nothing actually in the end possess everything? In this sermon, Dr. Sean Cole asks two particular questions. First of all, what exactly is meekness? And secondly, what does it truly mean to inherit the earth? Intense Mourning...Incredible Joy? Matthew 5:4
Sean's new book, Compassionate Calvinism: Defending the Doctrines of Grace Without Being a Jerk, has been released. You can purchase it here: https://www.amazon.com/Compassionate-Calvinism-Defending-Doctrines-Without-ebook/dp/B0FZDNLGK4/ref=sr_1_1 https://shop.g3min.org/products/compassionate-calvinism-defending-the-doctrines-of-grace-without-being-a-jerk Why is it a blessing to mourn? How will we be comforted? What does it truly mean to mourn? Here’s a way to think about this Beatitude: Intense mourning results in incredible joy! Dr. Sean Cole addresses FOUR issues of this Beatitude and delves deeply into the timely issue of weeping and mourning. First, what the mourning Jesus blesses is NOT. Second, what actually causes us to weep? Third, what does it truly mean to mourn? Fourth, when will we be comforted? To receive the beauty of salvation, we must first grieve, mourn, and weep over our own personal sin and all its ravaging effects so that we can genuinely experience the liberating forgiveness of Christ. ROMANS 8:29-30 Predestination
Sean's new book, Compassionate Calvinism: Defending the Doctrines of Grace Without Being a Jerk, has been released. You can purchase it here: https://www.amazon.com/Compassionate-Calvinism-Defending-Doctrines-Without-ebook/dp/B0FZDNLGK4/ref=sr_1_1 https://shop.g3min.org/products/compassionate-calvinism-defending-the-doctrines-of-grace-without-being-a-jerk Romans 8:29-30 teaches us the Golden Chain of Redemption. In this study, Dr. Sean Cole addresses God's foreknowing and predestination. God foreknowing His people in eternity past means that He set His electing love on them in a covenant relationship. It speaks more of the choosing of sinners to be saved. God predestined His people in eternity past, meaning that His preordained plan will certainly and infallibly come to pass according to His sovereign will. He also discusses the doctrine of unconditional election in the following verses: John 6, Acts 13:48, Ephesians 1, and 2 Thessalonians 2. He also encourages us to be compassionate in our interactions with those who differ from us on our views of election and predestination. The Blessing of Your Utter Nothingness? MATTHEW 5:1-3

He explains how to interpret the Beatitudes. He interacts with the first Beatitude by asking three questions: First of all, what does it mean to be “blessed”? Second, what does it mean to be “poor in spirit”? And third, what does possessing the kingdom of God truly mean? ROMANS 8:26-28
Sean's new book, Compassionate Calvinism: Defending the Doctrines of Grace Without Being a Jerk, has been released. You can purchase it here: https://www.amazon.com/Compassionate-Calvinism-Defending-Doctrines-Without-ebook/dp/B0FZDNLGK4/ref=sr_1_1 https://shop.g3min.org/products/compassionate-calvinism-defending-the-doctrines-of-grace-without-being-a-jerk Dr. Sean Cole teaches two truths from this passage in Romans: The Spirit helps us when we struggle with prayer (vs. 26-27), and God is absolutely sovereign over all things. (vs. 28) He also discusses THREE fences or truths that QUALIFY God’s decree, so we hold to what the Bible says and avoid faulty thinking. Fence One: God is NOT the author or direct cause of sin. Fence Two: God’s absolute decree does not violate man’s free will, as he is still responsible and acts according to his nature. Fence Three: God uses secondary causes to accomplish His decree.
