Unravel Your Brand

Most churches have a brand. Few of them know it. Unravel Your Brand is a podcast for church communicators, pastors, and ministry leaders who want to build a communications strategy that actually reflects who their church is and who they're trying to reach. Host James Blount spent years in secular marketing before trading it for church ministry, and he's been helping churches untangle their communications ever since. Each episode covers the real challenges church communicators face: building a brand that's authentic instead of aspirational, writing announcements that don't sound desperate, telling stories that move people, and building a strategy when you have no budget, no team, and no time. New episodes every week.

    Showing Up Honest

Church creatives feel the pressure to make everything look polished, put-together, and confident. But the communications that actually connect with people tend to look a little different. In this episode, we talk about what it costs to lead with honesty in your creative work, why vulnerability isn't a weakness in your role, and how showing up real builds more trust than showing up perfect.

  2. 7

    The Power of Authentic Storytelling

A mission statement tells people what you believe. A story shows them what it looks like when God actually moves. This week, we're talking about why vulnerable, authentic storytelling is the most effective tool you have and how to gather, shape, and share the stories that are already happening in your community.

  3. 6

    Drop The Megaphone

The pressure to be louder, flashier, more clever is real. But in the church, where the message actually matters, that instinct consistently backfires. This week we're talking about the shift from volume to clarity and why one honest conversation does more than any campaign ever could.

Your Church Already Has a Brand

Before someone visits your church, they're already forming a picture of who you are. That picture gets built from your parking lot, your Instagram, your website, and every conversation a member has about where they attend. This episode is about making that picture intentional, and what it actually takes to build a brand your community can recognize and trust.

The Score Your Church Is Missing

In high school, James played French horn in symphonic band. Poorly, he'll admit. But watching the conductor hold every instrument in his head at once — that's still the clearest picture he has of what a communications director is actually doing. This episode is about the score: what it is, why your church needs one, and what happens when everyone's playing without one.

Building A Brand Worth Belonging To

Most church communicators hear "brand identity" and go straight to logos and color palettes. This episode covers what gets left out of that conversation. James walks through everything that actually shapes how people perceive your church: your imagery, your social presence, your history, your tone of voice, and the way your staff treats a first-time visitor in the lobby on a Sunday morning. Every point of contact is doing something. The question is whether you're being intentional about what it's doing. Along the way the episode covers the clearest working definition James has for what a brand actually is, why the word "branding" makes some church leaders uncomfortable and what to do with that, how visual and non-visual identity have to reinforce each other or the whole thing sends mixed signals, and why the gap between what your communications promise and what your congregation delivers is exactly where trust dies. There's also a direct word for small church communicators. The most powerful brand elements in a church are almost entirely relational, and small churches have a structural advantage in relational depth that no design budget can manufacture. The question isn't whether you have the resources. It's whether you're being intentional about the ones you already have. The goal James keeps returning to is belonging. When a church builds a brand that actually reflects who it is, people don't just show up. They invest.

  7. 2

In The Beginning Was The Word

This episode looks at what the most communicated message in human history teaches church communicators about clarity, intentionality, and why the words your church chooses carry more weight than you think.

    What is a Church Brand?

Every church has a brand, whether they built one intentionally or not. In this episode, James breaks down what a church brand actually is, why most churches are managing theirs by accident, and what it looks like to start doing it on purpose.
