Karen Swallow Prior, Board-Certified Karen
Maybe you've heard her before, but have you ever heard her like this?? Join the fun as our favorite Karen kicks up those fancy shoes and puts the cool back in "Karen." She may be one of this country's most notoriously well-read, but did you know Dr. Karen Swallow Prior also gave that envelope to that guy? We'll hear about her days in organized crime, plus the devolution of one of her dog's nicknames, her feelings on the mockumentary Best In Show, and how she's in her Neil Diamond era. Brace yourself as she and Holly discuss both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings...when the villagers come for Karen and Holly with torches, it'll be because of this episode. Maybe their kind friend Chris Davis will save them...or maybe not because he's so embarrassed by how much they talk about him here.Karen is the author of many books including one of Holly's five-star reads from 2026, You Have a Calling, recommended for anyone discerning God's path for their life. Sarah Walton and Kristen Wetherell Can Offer You Plain Chicken and Sadness
If that jokes makes zero sense...no worries, because we will tap back to it at least 4 times during the course of this fun episode with Sarah Walton and Kristen Wetherell, co-authors of the new book, Jesus Will Meet You There. Kristen and Sarah will entertain Holly with their unconquerable Chicago accent, tell her all about their worst non-metaphorical messes, and teach us all how to updone the downtown. They'll compare notes on being concert grannies, getting eyebrow tats, and how all the writing pals seem to be married to husbands who bear striking resemblances to NFL quarterbacks. (The QB Holly is looking for during this episode is AARON RODGERS--sorry to shout it at you but at least she didn't do it during the show.) These 3 will evoke Bette Midler and at some point be sure to ask you if you've washed your hands. As the silliness winds down, they'll dive into the heart behind Kristen and Sarah's newest book, Jesus Will Meet You There. You can find the preorder bonus materials here, find Kristen online here and on Instagram here, and find Sarah on her Substack, as well as on Instagram here.Music for Unseriously was composed and produced by Adam Wright, founder of The Corner Room, a ministry that sets the Bible to music as a tool for memorization and meditation. But you better be right on time at 4:00 or you'll miss the secret DJ. Emma M. Lion will make an appearance, as well as Kate Albus. Both will be praised for their writing...one will catch some shade for their teatime verisimilitude.Be sure to catch the @hollymacklebooks Instagram for the video of Holly showing Felicity and Sarah the mug she surprised them with for just this occasion, and while you're there be sure to follow along with the Two Sisters and a Cup of Tea Instagram. PG/Get Serious: Kara Jones
*Heads up, parents, this episode is NOT for the kiddos!Today's Get Serious is with licensed professional counselor, counseling supervisor, and certified sex therapy associate Kara Jones all about healthy sexual intimacy within the covenant of marriage. It's an episode to forward along to your soon-to-be-married friends or your moms group--Kara is a wealth of knowledge mixed with deep sincerity and compassion on a topic that has long-plagued believers in the modern church. After some silliness and giggles on her Amazon search history and her husband's...shall we say...EAGERNESS to collect the Amazon deliveries, Kara and Holly will delve into how sex reflects how God made us to be drawn to his covenental, relational love, and all about Yada, or the Hebrew word for deep, experiential, relational knowledge of another. Plus they'll address the most common ditch Kara sees loving couples fall into before they arrive in her office.Kara kindly shares her nerd-out knowledge with us and offers multiple resources she strongly recommends, such as:The Great Sex Rescue, Sheila Wray GregoireRethinking Sexuality, Juli SlatteryCome As You Are, Emily Nagoskior any titles by Clifford & Joyce Penner such as Restoring the Pleasure,Enjoy! The Gift of Sexual Pleasure for Women,or Getting Your Sex Life Off to a Great Start: A Guide for Engaged or Newlywed Couples(Holly would like it noted that her Amazon search history has also now been impacted.)If you've never listened to the Unseriously episode with Birds & Bees' Mary Flo Ridley and Megan Michaelson all about training up kiddos drip by drip on this same topic, you can find that here, plus don't miss their traditional episode of Unseriously replete with the usual silliness here.Kara Jones is licensed to see clients located in Alabama at the time of service and can be reached here via the Covenant Counseling web site. Matt Tavares, Mayor of Breakfast Town
Don't just honk from the driveway, come on up to the door for this special Memorial Day episode from author and illustrator Matt Tavares. Along with Jeff Gottesfeld, Matt has created two very special patriotic picture books, Honor Flight, and 21 Steps, that he and Holly will discuss, along with all the anticipated Unseriously silliness. Matt will tell Holly about putting his beloved family members into awkward scenarios, that time in Nebraska where he got shamed by Google maps, and doubling down on the bad jokes...plus Ryan T. Higgins will just keep showing up. Don't miss the parts near the end where Matt explains the military honor of a "challenge coin," plus hear this purveyor of wide-eyed wonder talk about being in the room with a whole bunch of esteemed service members. While Memorial Day is special and distinct from Veteran's Day, it's still a great day to call your favorite veteran or active-duty military serviceperson and thank them for their service...tell them you see what they did there. We hope this episode of Unseriously makes you want to do just that!Be sure to check @hollymacklebooks on Instagram to enter to win a special Memorial Day giveaway of Matt's patriotic books straight from Candlewick Press.Music for Unseriously was composed and produced by Adam Wright, founder of The Corner Room, a ministry that sets the Bible to music as a tool for memorization and meditation. Carolyn Weber Skips to Her Loo
Don't let her interrupt you, but Carolyn Weber would like to talk Kardashians and moral ethics. Prepare to be charmed by author and esteemed* scholar Carolyn Weber. She and Holly will chat puns, fairy tales, and that streaker poem...not to mention how Carolyn really just wants to do a craft with you. Hear how TDH morphed into TBH, but don't dare judge either him, the Sludgy Pudgy Judgey, or the fact that Carolyn is probably wearing maternity pants right this minute.Carolyn's next book, Four Questions God Asks: Responding to God's Invitation for a Deeper Relationship with Him, is out with Baker Books this November, and Holly of course recommends Carolyn's Oxford years memoir, Surprised by Oxford. Nicole Conrad Always Reads the Book
It's Joyce from Stranger Things!Nah...it's our favorite English teacher, Nicole Conrad. She may always read the book, but hear the stories of how she is not to be trusted with famous people. Holly and Nicole will talk memorable haircuts, that wedding video, and certifiable wimpiness while watching Alone, plus book club fun and trope mash-up requests...this is a funny one with the bookstagrammer from @theturnedpage_bham. Holly would like to apologize for being especially laughy during this episode but would like to justify it by saying that Nicole is one of her absolute favorite people and there are jokes behind the jokes--so many they couldn't all be stuffed into one episode. Our first weekly episode of Unseriously is such a treat--join Holly as she asks author and theology professor Dr. Kelly Kapic about keeping his students on their toes, hears how he (regularly) gets schooled by his brilliant wife, and expresses her gratitude for not making the subtitle of his new book, "Hey, Holly! This one's for you!" This is also the episode where Collin Hansen is going to get name-dropped like three times.Kelly's devotional version of You're Only Human is called You Were Never Meant to Do It All, and was a 5-star read for Holly in 2025, easily making Kelly Kapic one of Holly's favorite Kellys. To the dismay of his many publishers, Kelly is not on the socials, but you can find him at his newly-agreed upon mandatory website, kellykapic.com.Music for Unseriously was composed and produced by Adam Wright, founder of The Corner Room, a ministry that sets the Bible to music as a tool for memorization and meditation. It's the PG episode. Drop 2
Unseriously is back! And it's one for the ear buds, parents. In this PG episode it isn't so much the silliness that toed the line toward a PG rating, but more so it's grown-up talk about getting rid of "the talk," spoiling a picture book that your kids might like to experience for themselves, and processing one of our favorite Bible teacher's theological educational experiences. ABOUT THIS SHOW
I'm Holly Mackle - join me as I ask quirky questions of notable normals. Maybe you've heard what your favorite creatives are working on, but it's outright fun to hear about their most-texted emoji, what they put in their Costco buggy, or the last time they had a dance party. Ready for a little levity in your earbuds? Welcome to Unseriously!
