Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan walks through the famous answer of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah to a man who came to him complaining of being addicted to sins. In a single page, Ibn Taymiyyah outlined ten cures the same ten that Ibn al-Qayyim later expanded into the 700-page classic al-Dā' wa al-Dawā'. The ten cures cover turning back to Allah, humbling yourself before Him, making du'a at the times it is answered, seeking forgiveness, daily adhkar, patience, completing the obligations, keeping La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah on the tongue, never giving up on supplication, and the certainty that victory comes with patience and ease with hardship and that the door of repentance never closes, no matter how far one has wandered. This is a lecture introducing a classical Arabic poem (qasida) written by the Andalusian scholar Ibn Bahij (5th century Hijri) in praise of the Mother of the Believers, Aisha رضي الله عنها. Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan provides biographical context on the author before walking through the poem's 56 lines, which are written as though Aisha رضي الله عنها herself is speaking declaring her unique virtues: being the Prophet's ﷺ only virgin wife, the one in whose home and on whose chest he died, the woman whose honour Allah defended directly in the Quran across ten verses, and the daughter of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the greatest of the companions. The lecture is delivered with evident urgency given the modern reality of people openly slandering her, noting that scholars have ruled such slander constitutes disbelief. The second half of the lecture pivots to the towering virtues of Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه his sacrificing all his wealth for the Prophet ﷺ, his companionship in the cave, his courage in fighting the apostates after the Prophet's death, and Jibreel's own testimony to his poverty in the path of Allah. In this lecture, Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan addresses a growing issue in our times: people hastily placing themselves at the forefront of daʿwah without proper grounding, adab, or clarity. He explains that Islam unrestrictedly grants every Muslim the responsibility to enjoin good and forbid evil, meaning that clear and agreed-upon matters of the dīn are not limited to a select class. At its core, daʿwah includes calling people to iṣlāḥ rectifying corrupted manners, improving character, and reforming the moral condition of society. At the same time, Ustadh AbdulRahman Hassan carefully outlines the limits and ethics of daʿwah. He stresses that public condemnation of rulers is not from the methodology of the Salaf; rather, sincere advice should be given privately to prevent division and chaos. He then clarifies who is truly “fit” to advise others: one who possesses bayyinah (clear knowledge of what they command or forbid), wisdom in dealing with evidence and doubts, and personal uprightness that helps people accept the message. While personal righteousness strengthens daʿwah, shortcomings are not an excuse for silence abandoning the duty altogether can itself become a grave failing.
