VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast Episode 24: “My Richness Is Life, Forever.” In this special two-year anniversary episode of the VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast, I reflect on life, art, voice, memory, and what it means to leave evidence that we were here. The episode begins with a tattoo on my right thigh: “My richness is life, forever,” a quote from Bob Marley written on my body in the handwriting of Jean-Michel Basquiat. From Marley’s philosophy of richness to Basquiat’s artistic language, to my own body and voice, I reflect on how the VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast has become an archive of my life and ideas over the past two years. I also finally explain the origin of the podcast’s name through Dominican icon Fefita La Grande and her song “Vamos a Hablar Inglés.” Rather than functioning literally as an English lesson, Fefita transforms the phrase into Dominican vernacular comedy—a warning, a joke, and a piece of everyday cultural language. That transformation became part of what inspired me to make the phrase my own through this podcast. For the first time, I also publicly introduce my upcoming book, I’ll Be Dancing On My Own: A Book About the Critical Theory of Selfhood, Decolonizing Solidarity, and Achieving Total Liberation. During the episode, I read the first paragraph of my Chapter One draft and the opening two to three paragraphs of Chapter Two, offering listeners an early glimpse into the philosophical and autobiographical project I am currently building. VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast Episode 23: “A World Beyond the Present: Reimagining Childhood Through Pokémon” What if the Pokémon world is more than childhood nostalgia? What if it can also become a methodological and pedagogical tool for reimagining how our societies treat children, minors, and young people? In this episode of the VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast, I reflect on the lasting role that Pokémon has played in my imagination—from my childhood into my present-day life. I explore how the Pokémon world presents a society where young people are trusted to move, learn, build relationships, discover their abilities, develop a sense of purpose, and participate meaningfully in the world around them. I am not arguing that the Pokémon world is perfect or that it should be copied literally. Instead, I ask what becomes imaginable when a fictional world grants young people mobility, responsibility, community, adventure, and the freedom to become. Pokémon gives us an opening through which we can question the limitations of our own political realities. Modern nation-states frequently claim that children are their future, yet their governments and institutions repeatedly fail to prioritize children in the present. Young people are subjected to poverty, displacement, war, family separation, inaccessible education, institutional violence, identity policing, and political decisions in which they have little meaningful voice. Their bodies are controlled, their knowledge is dismissed, and their personhood is often treated as secondary to the authority of adults, families, schools, religions, markets, and the state. This episode challenges the idea that children are merely incomplete adults waiting to become real people. Children possess present-tense humanity. They deserve bodily autonomy, age-appropriate self-determination, safety from manipulation and coercion, opportunities to explore their identities, and the freedom to continually create and re-create themselves without unnecessary social barriers. Through the framework of Afro-Jotería Studies and the twenty-one tenets of Afro-Jotx Identity and Consciousness, I consider childhood as a protected space of becoming. I draw especially from the tenets rooted in joy and radical love; multidimensional social justice; the disruption of epistemological boundaries; individual and collective identity exploration; resistance to violence, coercion, and subordination; and a decolonial Black Queer Transfeminist pedagogy and praxis. I also connect this conversation to Afro-Jotería’s call to reimagine society through Queer Afro-Futurism and Latinx Futurism as world-building tools. If our present political systems cannot imagine children as autonomous, complex, joyful, and evolving human beings, then perhaps popular culture can help us develop new political languages—and new worlds—in which they are. Pokémon becomes more than a game, television series, or fictional universe. It becomes a study space. It becomes a political question. It becomes an invitation to imagine societies that do not merely claim to care about young people, but materially organize themselves around their safety, freedom, joy, curiosity, and liberation. What would change if we treated every child as someone already worthy of dignity? What kind of world would we build if young people were trusted to discover who they are? And what can the Pokémon world teach us about moving beyond the limits of the present? En este episodio del VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast, reflexiono sobre el papel duradero que Pokémon ha desempeñado en mi imaginación, desde mi infancia hasta mi vida actual. Exploro cómo el mundo de Pokémon presenta una sociedad en la que se confía en que las personas jóvenes pueden desplazarse, aprender, construir relaciones, descubrir sus habilidades, desarrollar un sentido de propósito y participar de manera significativa en el mundo que las rodea. No estoy argumentando que el mundo de Pokémon sea perfecto ni que deba copiarse literalmente. En cambio, pregunto qué se vuelve imaginable cuando un mundo ficticio les concede a las personas jóvenes movilidad, responsabilidad, comunidad, aventura y la libertad de convertirse en quienes desean ser. Pokémon nos ofrece una apertura desde la cual podemos cuestionar las limitaciones de nuestras propias realidades políticas. Los Estados-nación modernos afirman con frecuencia que la niñez representa su futuro, pero sus gobiernos e instituciones fracasan repetidamente en priorizarla en el presente. Las personas jóvenes son sometidas a la pobreza, el desplazamiento, la guerra, la separación familiar, la falta de acceso a la educación, la violencia institucional, el control de sus identidades y decisiones políticas en las que poseen muy poca voz significativa. Sus cuerpos son controlados, sus conocimientos son ignorados y su condición humana suele tratarse como secundaria frente a la autoridad de las personas adultas, las familias, las escuelas, las religiones, los mercados y el Estado. Este episodio cuestiona la idea de que las niñas, los niños y las personas jóvenes son simplemente adultos incompletos que esperan convertirse en personas reales. La niñez posee una humanidad que existe plenamente en el presente. Merece autonomía corporal, autodeterminación acorde con su edad, protección frente a la manipulación y la coerción, oportunidades para explorar sus identidades y la libertad de crearse y recrearse continuamente sin barreras sociales innecesarias. A través del marco de los Estudios de Afro-Jotería y los veintiún principios de la Identidad y Conciencia Afro-Jotx, considero la niñez como un espacio protegido del devenir. Me apoyo especialmente en los principios arraigados en la alegría y el amor radical; la justicia social multidimensional; la ruptura de las fronteras epistemológicas; la exploración individual y colectiva de las identidades; el rechazo de la violencia, la coerción y la subordinación; y una pedagogía y praxis descolonial, Negra, Queer y Transfeminista. También conecto esta conversación con el llamado de la Afro-Jotería a reimaginar la sociedad mediante el Afrofuturismo Queer y el Futurismo Latinx como herramientas para la construcción de mundos. Si nuestros sistemas políticos actuales no pueden imaginar a la niñez como autónoma, compleja, alegre y en constante evolución, entonces quizás la cultura popular pueda ayudarnos a desarrollar nuevos lenguajes políticos y nuevos mundos en los que sí pueda existir de esa manera. Pokémon se convierte en algo más que un videojuego, una serie de televisión o un universo ficticio. Se convierte en un espacio de estudio. Se convierte en una pregunta política. Se convierte en una invitación a imaginar sociedades que no se limiten a afirmar que les importan las personas jóvenes, sino que se organicen materialmente alrededor de su seguridad, libertad, alegría, curiosidad y liberación. ¿Qué cambiaría si tratáramos a cada niña, niño y persona joven como alguien que ya es merecedora de dignidad? ¿Qué clase de mundo construiríamos si confiáramos en que las personas jóvenes pueden descubrir quiénes son? ¿Y qué puede enseñarnos el mundo de Pokémon sobre cómo avanzar más allá de los límites del presente? Created for Pride Month, this episode brings together two conversations that deeply belong together. The first centers Trans* allyship as an active and ongoing commitment—one rooted in education, solidarity, reflection, and the willingness to challenge transphobia and systemic harm in everyday life. The second expands the conversation by turning toward the Caribbean and Latin America, where Indigenous traditions and cultural histories reveal that gender fluidity is not new, not foreign, and not outside of our people—it has long existed beyond Western binary frameworks. VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast Episode 21: “Reading My Blog Post: Demanding Respect Through Violence: The Fractured ‘Macho Mind’” In this episode, I continue the audiobook-style series on the VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast by reading aloud another one of my blog posts: Demanding Respect Through Violence: The Fractured “Macho Mind.” As we move through the month of mothers and reflect on Mother’s Day, this episode opens a deeper conversation about what it means to reimagine life, care, and community through new pedagogies and liberatory epistemologies. At the center of that reflection is a difficult but necessary question: what are the root causes of violence among men of color, and how do those harms continue to shape the lives of women, trans people, families, and entire communities? Through this reading, I move through the blog as both reflection and analysis—unpacking the “macho mind” as a fractured condition shaped by colonialism, patriarchy, machismo, and blanquitud. I examine how rigid masculinity, emotional suppression, and the demand for respect through violence create cycles of mental health harm, misogyny, transphobia, and communal pain.  This episode also explores pathways toward something else: transformative justice, collective healing, Black Trans Aliveness, and the reimagining of masculinity beyond domination. VAMOS HABLAR INGLÉS Podcast Episode 15: “One Year on Estrogen & 26 Years of Becoming” In this November episode, I take a deep breath and reflect on a full year on estrogen—what shifted in my body, what shifted in my spirit, and what I didn’t expect to feel along the way. Since it’s also my birthday month, I zoom out even wider: 26 years of gender + sexuality—of searching, masking, surviving, experimenting, unlearning shame, and finally learning how to come home to myself. I talk about the “second puberty” reality in a grounded way: the emotional waves, the softness, the patience it forces, the grief that can rise up, and the quiet joy of noticing yourself change in real time. I also break down the realistic first-year timeline: for many transfeminine people, some changes tend to begin within the first few months, while “full” results can take years—which is both frustrating and deeply affirming (because it means there’s still room to keep becoming). I also bring in a few affirming stats, because I want listeners—especially Black trans women—to feel the bigger picture. One major survey found that 98% of people who accessed gender-affirming hormone therapy said it made them more satisfied with their lives. Another report found that access to gender-affirming care is associated with a lower prevalence of suicide attempts (which is one more reason community care and medical access matter so much). And in data focused on Black trans folks, so many of us are still choosing ourselves and moving forward in our transitions—even while navigating systems that were never built to hold us gently. This episode dives into my lived experiences of trauma within a systemically violent household, which became the breeding ground for exploring decolonial theory and post-structuralism. These frameworks gave me the tools to dissect how we are all, at some point or another, coerced into compliance by forces beyond our control. I’m breaking it all down, from microaggressions to emotional manipulation, as I connect these experiences to my Afro-Jotx expertise. I want you to walk away understanding that unconditional love—true, raw, and untainted—is the only thing that can truly set us free. If you’re a survivor, know you are not alone, and don’t let anyone gaslight you into thinking you are. One of the hardest pills to swallow is how often the culprits of my trauma were white men, embodying a textbook case of transmysogynoir. What does that mean? Simply put, it’s the intersection of misogyny, anti-Blackness, and transphobia. It’s when a white man’s casual cruelty is shielded by a combination of privilege and ignorance—like my former roommate, who consistently misgendered me and reduced my existence to a punchline. He was the embodiment of transmysogynoir, as his actions reflected the ugly, systemic hatred rooted in colonial violence that continues to marginalize Black trans women today. Let’s be clear: I’m not here to demonize anyone—but I am here to hold white men accountable for their actions. We’re done with excuses. White supremacy thrives on complacency and silence, and in this episode, I’m calling it out, loud and clear. At the core of it all is this: accountability is a pro-human act, and it’s long overdue. For too long, we’ve let these systems of violence dictate who gets to be human and who doesn’t. Well, no more. I’m unapologetically taking a stand against it all, from my traumatic past to the systemic forces that tried to break me.
