Guided by some cringe-inducing banter between hosts Katie Couric and Willard (loves the very young ladies) Scott, this particular Thanksgiving Day Parade offers the usual flotilla of floats, clowns, off-key high school marching bands, baton twirlers and of course your then-favorite character B A L L O O N S (Woody Woodpecker; Betty Boop (I think Willard has a woody for this one); Pink Panther; Raggedy Anne; Bart Simpson and more). And this parade is chock full of top Grade-A talent: John Schneider (!) SINGS! Kelsey Grammar SINGS! Keith Carradine SINGS! Joey Lawrence (‘memba him?) SINGS! Susan Anton (‘memba her?) SINGS! (and taking a nod from Willard, one of the VHS Rewind (loves the very young ladies) co-hosts (yes, it’s Christopher) swoons over Susan. And so much more incredible talent is on display (PC Quest (‘memba them?) (look them up if you don’t ‘member). And what is a Thanksgiving Day Parade without a depressing song from the then-Broadway show MISS SAIGON?!?! This parade abounds with so many great fashions. Given that this is the Thanksgiving Day parade, and Christmas is less than a month away, the commercials in between the parade are curiously not-Xmas-ey in flavor (some are, but most are about Cotton (!) Mark and Chris get together to review this extremely underrated film from 1986. Matthew Labyorteaux who is best know from Little House on the Prairie and the 80's hacker action show, Whiz Kids. Matthew plays Paul Conway who  has a best friend who is a robot....yeah. Having a robot buddy may seem cute but after his friend is killed by her abusive father, Albert...I mean Paul attempts to save her by implanting robotic microchips into her brain.....yeah. Who else is in the nearly forgotten film? How about Anne Ramsey who plays the shotgun wielding neighbor and is easily the same character she portrayed in Throw Mama From the Train. We also have a very young Kristy Swanson who looks lovely until...she's ya know....dead. I don’t think it will come to many as much of a surprise for my fondness for the tv show, Whiz Kids which originally aired for a very brief 8 months from October 5, 1983 to June 2, 1984. In those 8 months, 18 episodes aired and I loved the show, I loved it so much that even recorded many of the episodes on a now lost BetaMax collection of tapes. When Whiz Kids first aired I was 10, was really into the BASIC programming language, creating my own games, learning about BBS systems using my 300 baud modem for my Commodore 64. I quickly outgrew the Commodore and received an IBM PC which I would use for many years. I owned (and still do) many computers, Apple II, Apple IIC, Apple IIGS, TRS-80, Commodore 128, Atari 400 and 800, etc etc – right now I am writing this on a Windows 10 machine powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 processor with 32gb of RAM, Navi RX 5000 video card, liquid cooling and many other little amazing things that allow me to edit all of my podcasts, video and anything else needed.  Why am I going off on this tangent? Well, because I have been interested in computers since I was in 2nd grade, Whiz Kids came around at a time when I wanted to learn more about what a computer could do and the show absolutely fed my dopey head with fun ideas.  I will always appreciate Whiz Kids and Matthew Labyorteaux’s role as Richie Adler. My goal in life at 10 was to own a RALF computer which was a Frankenstein-type of monstrosity with an IMSAI PCS 80/30 computer at the heart but what I really wanted was all those cool blinking lights. I think the desire to own such a complicated machine birthed my love of vintage modular HIFI stereo equipment, recording devices from 1960’s and 70’s, my collection of vintage synthesizers, guitars, amps and a lot more that my wife will one day try to get me to part with. I only hope I can convince my son to fall in love with these items so they don’t end up in a garage sale (my 1978 Gibson Les Paul Custom for $65 is a fear). Today, my recording setup is not unlike RALF, I use a Mackie digital mixer, Focusrite Scarlett audio interface, Shure SM7B microphone – I have XLR cables routed everywhere and other wires aplenty and I would never have it any other way! When I fire up my recording computer and get on the line with Chris, Kim, Leah or one of the many people who take the time to discuss all of these wonderful shows with me, I feel RALF is alive in my setup, I might not have the Intel 8080 processor from the IMSAI powering my Mac but deep within the Intel i7’s multi-cores is the power behind RALF. I am now officially rambling so I am just going to conclude with this, Whiz Kids left an impression on me and was very important to my development and perhaps it even taught me to WANT things! I will always cherish this light-hearted crime drama about nerdy hackers in southern California. It’s a sweet and worthwhile show.

I have followed Allison Preston’s work for quite some time and originally came across her talent while listening to the podcast, The Retroist. Where the charges against Woody Allen were tried in a court of law and Woody was cleared, and may be a victim of the Me Too vigilantes, auteur Louis CK has confessed to his serial-masturbation-in-front-of-trapped-women actions – how can we put that aside when watching this directorial effort? Louis CK seems to be aping the Woody Allen look and style (shooting in black-and-white) but is auteur Louis another Woody (writing/directing-wise)? Is auteur Louis CK’s film full of neurotic characters or deeply disturbed characters, starting with Louis CK’s main character (who resembles, well, Louis CK) and including John Malkovich’s Woody-esque film director who may have molested a child? Is Chloe Grace Moretz hot in a string bikini? Join us as we whip this episode out and whack off in your ears with answers to these and other conversation topics.

VHS Rewind dips its toe into some potentially controversial waters by beginning a short series of episodes reviewing films that have fallen victim to the vigilantes known as the MeToo movement. First up is MeToo whipping boy Woody Allen’s A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK…Sexual abuse claims continue to dog Woody despite the claims having been investigated and “no credible evidence” having been found to support these allegation. Can A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK be viewed on its own merits? Or does the director’s alleged peccadilloes rain down on any entertainment value the film has? Should art in any form be banned because of the artist’s possibly tawdry personal life? Has the MeToo movement, which can ruin an individual’s life on mere hearsay, gone too far? Oh yeah, this is going to be a very stormy conversation so bring your umbrellas and give us a listen.

The Christmas Season is upon us once again and VHS Rewind has placed under your mistletoe an all-new Xmas music spectacular!!! The years just tick by so quickly!  Chris and RetroDad are too lazy to go back into the archives to see how many Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades we have reviewed so 7 sounds like a good number! This year we found an incomplete copy of the 1980 Parade and missing from our copy was Gil Gerard and Todd Bridges but it Includes performances by the casts of the Broadway shows “Barnum,” “Brigadoon,” “The Pirates of Penzance” and “A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine” and by the Puerto Rican youth dance troupe Ballet Isleño. The stars include Danielle Brisebois, Dean Butler, Erik Estrada, and so many other and of course, Ed McMahon as the town drunk RetroDad and Chris from VHS Rewind wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

In this throwback from the FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION podcast archives, We have another Halloween treat for you! Chris and I discussed the fun and mesmerizing horror TV series created by George A. Romero, Tales From the Darkside which aired 37 years ago today on October 29th 1983!  We hope you all have a Happy and Safe Halloween. “Tales from the Darkside is a 1980s American anthology horror TV series created by George A. Romero. Debuting in October 1983 with a pilot episode and then being picked up for syndication in September 1984, the show ran for 4 seasons through July 1988. Each episode, aired originally by Tribune Broadcasting late at night, was an individual short story that often ended with a plot twist. The series’ episodes spanned the genres of horror, science fiction, and fantasy, and some episodes featured elements of black comedy or more lighthearted themes.”

In this throwback from the PHUYUCK podcast archives, Mark and Chris discuss Breakin’ Which was originally released on May 4th, 1984. “A struggling young jazz dancer meets up with two break-dancers. Together they become the sensation of the street crowds.”

In this throwback from the FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION podcast archives, Mark and Chris discuss The Greatest American Heroine pilot episode that originally aired back in 1986! During 1986, the original principal cast reunited for a pilot movie for a new NBC series to be named The Greatest American Heroine, which did not result in a new series, and the pilot was never broadcast by NBC. Ultimately, the pilot was re-edited as an episode of the original series (complete with original opening credits and theme), and added to syndication sets of the original series aired on several local television stations in the late 80s, for which it is the final episode. Immediately after the beginning credits, the episode’s title card is superimposed over a nighttime view of the Los Angeles skyline, reading “The Greatest American Hero” before appending the letters “i n e” individually to the sound of the NBC chimes. The chimes were a nod to NBC and its president, Brandon Tartikoff, who had expressed interest in reviving the series. The pilot movie reveals that several years after the final episode, Ralph’s secret identity was finally revealed to the public, resulting in his becoming a celebrity. This angers the aliens who gave him the suit, and they charge him with finding a new hero to wear the costume and use its powers for fighting evil. Once the transfer is made, they explain, all memory of Ralph’s exploits will be purged from the world’s memory and remembered only by Ralph, Pam, and Bill. Bill begins their search by researching people with desired hero qualities, but Ralph finds a young woman named Holly Hathaway (Mary Ellen Stuart), an elementary school teacher who spends her off-hours time looking for lost kittens, raising environmental awareness, and serving as a foster mother. Bill, Pam, and Ralph meet in the desert, where Ralph tells Bill about Holly. He reacts visibly to his new partner being a “skirt” before Holly arrives, flying in wearing a new version of the suit made for her, and she pledges to help Bill. The original trio say their final farewells, and even the stoic Maxwell reveals his true emotions as he says goodbye to Ralph and calling Pam a trooper—”…one of the best!” Holly reacts emotionally to the fond farewells, but breaks the somber mood as she accidentally pulls the door off of Bill’s sedan. The rest of the episode deals with her learning how to use the suit with Bill Maxwell’s guidance, and the pair trying to develop a working relationship. It ends with Holly talking to her foster daughter about Bill, saying he is a good person; Bill, overhearing what she says about him, speaks into a recorder he uses as his “diary” to suggest that maybe she is the right person to wear the suit after all.
