So far in our study of David, we examined characteristics that helped us understand who he was as a person. Sometimes he acted like a man after God’s own heart and other times he chose to walk in disobedience. The reason we appreciate David so much is because we see ourselves in him as we walk to please the Lord. Last week we spoke about Discovering Jesus, the first component of our new Vision Statement. This Sunday we will look at the second segment, Discovering His Family. That word family brings a variety of thoughts to our mind, some pleasant and others painful. Yet we see in scripture family is important to God. In our study of David so far, we have been fortunate to get a glimpse into the life of a true leader who possesses a driving desire to honor and please God. Many of us have the same desire. One component of being an effective leader is doing what needs to be done even when the support of others is lacking. Sometimes in life it feels we’re in a boxing ring receiving blow after blow from the enemy. We duck, we dive, moving from side to side, trying to avoid being hit. But on occasion we’re on the receiving end of a blow that we didn’t see coming, and it leaves us reeling. David found himself in such a state. It has been said that “Jealousy is like a parasite that eats away at the soul.” So true. And if that emotion is left unchecked it will lead to a life of misery. David was the recipient of someone’s jealousy, yet it did not deter him from following his convictions. This week we will discover a couple simple steps to guard against having a jealous heart. Sometimes I wish God would act faster and be more decisive in matters that pertain to me. But it just doesn’t happen. So, I must learn to live with the tension my walk of faith produces and continue to trust Him. In life, we often ask the question “How long?”How long will I be in pain? How long until we eat? How long until Jesus returns? How long until I catch a break? The list could go on.
