SEP. 14, 2026How to deal with temptation."No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man." 1Co 10:13 NKJVYou should deal with temptation in the same way you would deal with weeds in a garden. You can't just cut off the tops of the weeds, because in a few days, they'll be back.Similarly, saying, "I'll just stop sinning" addresses only the externals. Another option is mowing the weeds all the way down to the ground, cutting off the shoots. Now the garden looks good and weed-free for a while, but it doesn't stay weed-free. The only effective way to deal with temptation is at its root. The Bible says: "No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make a way of escape." What is God's "way of escape" for you? Living in His Word and allowing His Word to live in you. Satan tempted Jesus three different times in the wilderness, but Jesus overcame him. How? Three times He answered, "It is written." You need to know and use the Word of God in your encounters with temptation. The battlefield is in your mind. AUG. 25, 2026Always do the honorable thing."We are careful to be honorable before the Lord, but we also want everyone else to see that we are honorable. 2Co 8:21 NLTIn an extensive opinion survey called The Day America Told the Truth, James Patterson and Peter Kim reported these startling findings.Only 13 percent of those interviewed believed that all Ten Commandments are still binding and relevant today. Ninety-one percent admitted that they lied regularly, both at home and at work. Most workers admitted to goofing off an average of seven hours a week.About half of the workforce admitted they regularly called in sick, even when they felt well. When they were asked what they would be willing to do for ten million dollars, 25 percent said they would abandon their families, 23 percent said they'd be willing to work as a prostitute for a week, and 7 percent said they'd be willing to murder a stranger!And should you conclude that those surveyed are the unsaved and the unchurched, Doug Sherman and William Hendricks surveyed Christians and found that they were almost as likely as unbelievers to do these things too.They admitted to stealing in the workplace, falsifying their tax returns, and selectively obeying the laws. Paul wrote to the Corinthians: 'We are careful to be honorable before the Lord, but we also want everyone else to see that we are honorable." Then he wrote to the Christians in Rome: "Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. AUG. 20, 2026Put the past behind you."Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” Isa 43:18-19 NIVAfter falling twice in the 1988 Olympic speed-skating races, Dan Jansen sought out sports psychologist Dr. Jim Loehr, who helped him find a new balance between sport and the rest of his life and to pay more attention to the mental aspects of skating.Peter Mueller became his coach, putting him through workouts that he described as "the toughest I've ever known." By the time the 1994 Olympics arrived, Jansen had more confidence than ever. He had set a 500-meter world record just two months previously, so that race seemed to be all his!Then the unimaginable happened, and he fell during the 500-meter race. Dr. Loehr advised him, "Start preparing for the 1000-meter race. Put the 500-meter race behind you immediately. Stop reliving it. Think 1000!" For years Jansen didn't believe he could win that distance, as he had always considered it his weaker event. Now it was his last chance at an Olympic medal. As the race began, Jansen said, "I just seemed to be sailing along," and then he slipped and came within an inch of stepping on a lane marker. SEP. 10, 2026Recall your past victories."Remember well what the Lord your God did." Dt 7:18 NIVThe ability to recall the past is one of the most powerful functions of your brain. And when you recall past victories, you rekindle the courage, joy, and sense of accomplishment associated with the victory.You can never underestimate the power of an experience to re-inspire faith. From the parting of the Red Sea to the fall of Jericho, the Israelites had numerous miracles God had performed on their behalf. And He had cautioned them about forgetting His mighty acts: "Remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. You saw with your own eyes the great trials, the signs and wonders, the mighty hand and outstretched arm, with which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you now fear" (Dt 7:18-19 NIV). If you've allowed Satan to give you "experience amnesia" and have forgotten those times of divine intervention in your life, why not recall someone else's testimony? Faith can come from more than one direction. Recall the good things God has done for your friends, acquaintances, and coworkers. Miracles are exciting, no matter who the recipient is. And if God did it before, He can certainly do it again. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Heb 13:8 NIV). When something in your future feels threatening, stop and remember God's goodness to you in the past. Recall a time or incident in which He brought you out of a difficult situation that you thought you'd never get through. SEP. 9, 2026Healing for shame and condemnation."God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 2Co 5:21 NIVShame and condemnation are two weapons Satan will use to torment you. They will steal your rest and sap the joy out of your life.What's the answer? Begin to see yourself as God sees you. "God made him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." When we are aware of our shortcomings, how is it possible to believe that God sees us as "righteous" and wants us to see ourselves that way too? Because when you became a Christian, God placed you "in Christ"; therefore, you are always accepted by Him. "Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Ro 5:1 NIV).The word justified means: "just-as-if-I'd never sinned." And that's how God sees you twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year, all the way from the new birth to the New Jerusalem. Plus, Jesus understands your struggles since He dealt with them Himself.He "understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. SEP. 7, 2026Lessons from James (2)"A doer...will be blessed in what he does." Jas 1:25 NKJVNorth of Israel and teeming with aquatic life of many kinds, the Sea of Galilee is a beautiful blue. South of Israel is the Dead Sea, and it's called "Dead" for a good reason: There's no life in its stagnant water.What makes these two bodies of water so different? First, the Sea of Galilee has an inlet: the Jordan River flows into it. On its southern shore, the Sea of Galilee also has an outlet: water flows through the Great Rift Valley. Like the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea has an inlet: the Jordan flows into it. But the Dead Sea has no outlet; it takes in but does not give out. This is the theme of the book of James. Vibrant believers not only take in, but they also give out. They put the word they receive (input) into action (output): "If anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does" (Jas 1:23-25 NKJV). James warns us not to become so heavenly-minded that we are no earthly good; that it's not enough to read the Scriptures, but we must also look for practical ways to put them into practice each day. SEP. 6, 2026Lessons from James (1)"Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." Jas 1:22 NKJVThe book of James has 108 verses, and it outlines how we can put our faith into action.It was written by Jesus' half-brother, the natural-born son of Mary and Joseph.Apparently, James became a believer as a result of the resurrection. Paul said that after Jesus rose from the grave, "he appeared to James, then to all the apostles" (1Co 15:7 NIV). Somewhere, privately and personally, the risen Lord met with James, and His little brother's life was never the same. After his encounter with his older brother, who was the victorious-over-death Godman, James grew in faith and became the undisputed leader of the Jerusalem church. The apostle Paul referred to him as a pillar of the church (see Gal 2:9), and tradition tells us that James was so devoted to prayer that he was given the nickname "camel knees" because of the calluses resulting from the hours he spent on his knees. Today we are 2,000 years removed from James' writing, yet his letter remains as relevant to us as the Internet's morning news. The central message of his book is contained in these words: "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." James addresses our biggest challenge: practicing with our lives what we proclaim with our lips.In every paragraph, he reminds us that when we are walking in step with the Holy Spirit, we will not be wearing out the seat of our pants, but the soles of our shoes. SEP. 4, 2026The whole world must hear God's Word."Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature." Mk 16:15 NKJVIn 1993, a group called AD2000 United Prayer Track came up with an innovative idea. To help realize their goal of "a church for every people and the gospel for every person by AD2000," they established a program called "Praying through the Window." The "window" referred to an area on the globe from ten degrees to forty degrees north of the Equator, from North Africa and Southern Spain eastward to Japan and the northern Philippines. Almost three billion people live in this area, where the most prominent religions are Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism. For the entire month of October 1993, and again in 1995, millions of Christians prayed for the people in "the 10/40 window." The goal was that new churches be established, and new missionaries sent to these areas. In 1993 alone, the number of churches in Albania grew from 50 to more than 300, and the number of Christian fellowship groups formed in India rose from an average of three to seventeen each day. If your world consists only of your loved ones, your job, and your church, ask God to open your eyes to the world beyond your world. Begin praying that He will move in those nations. "Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession" (Ps 2:8 NKJV). You say, "Can we realistically believe that the world will turn to Christ?" SEP. 3, 2026Has God given you a good idea?"I will...show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." Jer 33:3 NKJVMost success stories begin as an idea in someone's mind. And God is the giver of good ideas. "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights" (Jas 1:17 NKJV).God imparts wisdom and knowledge to those who are humble enough to seek His guidance. His promise is: "Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not knowiỊi Robert Chesebrough had a product in which he believed wholeheartedly. In fact, it was his own invention. Chesebrough had transformed the ooze that forms on shafts of oil rings-rod wax-into a petroleum jelly that he personally found to have great healing properties. He believed so much in the healing aspects of his creation that he became his own "experimental subject." To demonstrate the benefits of his product for others, he burned himself with acid and flame. He cut and scratched himself so often and so deeply that he bore scars of his tests for his entire life. Nevertheless, Chesebrough proved his point, and people were convinced. They only had to look at his wounds and how they were healed to see the value of his product, which is still an international bestseller. We know it as Vaseline. What do you see in your future? Do you believe enough in its potential to help others that you're willing to invest your time, energy, resources, and hope into developing it? SEP. 2, 2026Stand up to your giant."As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran...to meet him." 1Sa 17:48 NIVAre you ready to grab your sword of faith and behead the giant in your life? Your best strategy will always be to attack a giant before it has a chance to get the best of you.Eleanor Roosevelt said, "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face." And you can do it! "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2Ti 1:7 NKJV). Whether real or imagined, all threats are perceived as having the potential for loss. It may be the loss of your income, your health, your position, a desired relationship, etc. Freedom begins when you stop and make an honest confession of the loss you really fear. Identifying and acknowledging your real fears will be a giant step toward breaking free from them. To do this, you must go through the process of peeling the "fear onion" to get to the core of your anxiety. And you may have to peel back a lot more layers than expected. David didn't wait for the giant to come to him. "David ran quickly...to meet him." Get your problem out into the open, confront it, develop a plan for overcoming it, and remember that God is with you and will enable you to conquer it. Dale Carnegie said, "Do the thing you fear to do, and keep doing it...That is the quickest and surest way ever yet discovered to conquer fear." SEP. 1, 2026Priority giving."Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all..." Pr 3:9 NIVOf all the items in your monthly budget, giving to God should be your top priority-not just a priority, but your first and highest one. The Israelites were largely an agricultural people. With that in mind, read this wonderful promise that God made to them and claim it: "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine" (vv. 9-10 NIV). Notice the words "the firstfruits of all." That means before you pay the mortgage or buy groceries or pay other bills, the very first check you need to write is to God. Here's why: If you wait until other expenses are met first, it will impact the bottom line of your giving. That's just the way it works with priorities. Whatever you place first will take precedence over everything that comes after it. Generosity should be the primary impetus behind your giving plan. And your generosity tends to be highest, immediately after receiving provision. Waiting until that provision has dwindled and been reduced by your monthly obligations has a tendency to squash generosity. However, if you prioritize your giving, then everything else will take its proper place in line behind the priority of God's work. Honor God with the first portion of your income instead of giving Him the leftovers. That means that before you pay the mortgage, buy groceries, or cover any other expenses, the very first thing you should set aside is God's portion. Then use what is left to meet your own needs, such as paying bills or buying groceries. Pr 13:4 NLTIn the fall of 1894, Guglielmo retreated to his room on the third floor. All summer while on vacation, he read books and filled notebooks with squiggly diagrams. Now the time had come for him to work. Every day, he rose early. He worked all day and long into the night, to the point that his mother became alarmed. He had never been a robust person, but now he had become appallingly thin. His face was drawn, and his eyes were often glazed over with fatigue. Finally, the day came when he announced that his instruments were ready. He invited the family to his room and, pushing a button, he succeeded in ringing a bell on the first floor!While his mother was amazed, his father was not. He saw no use in being able to send a signal so short a distance. So Guglielmo labored on. Little by little, he made changes in his sending circuits so he could send a signal from one hill to the next and then beyond the hill. Eventually his invention was perfected-partly due to vision and inspiration, but mostly due to perseverance.Guglielmo Marconi was eventually hailed as the inventor of wireless telegraphy, radio's forerunner. He not only received a Nobel Prize in physics but also acquired a seat in the Italian senate. JUL. 29, 2026God is working on your behalf."We know that in everything God works for the good of those who love him." Ro 8:28 NCVThe Bible begins with these words: "In the beginning God created the sky and the earth. The earth was empty and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and God's Spirit was moving over the water.Then God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. God saw that the light was good" (Ge 1:1-4 NCV). Even when your life seems like a jumbled mess, you can trust the God who brought order out of chaos and light out of darkness to help your life make sense. When you believe that "All things work together for good" (Ro 8:28 NKJV), it redefines the bad things that happen. The worst day of your life can turn into the best day. There's a silver lining to every cloud, and every downside has a potential upside.When you interpret life through this prism, it gives you confidence that everything is going to be alright. It reassures you that the best is yet to come because God said, "For I know the plans I have for you...they are plans for good" (See Jer 29:11 NLT). But sometimes you have a part to play. God is setting up divine appointments, but you must keep them. God is a gift-giver, but you must fan your gift into flame. God is calling, but you must answer (See Isa 6:8). God is ordering your footsteps, but you must keep in step with the Spirit. JUL. 28, 2026Study. Work. Hope. Perseverance."Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings." Pr 22:29 NKJVHelping the deaf to communicate was what truly motivated Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone. Perhaps that's because his mother and his wife were both deaf. "If I can make a deaf-mute talk," Bell said, "I can make metal talk." For five frustrating and impoverished years, he experimented with a variety of materials to make a metal disc that would vibrate in response to sound, reproduce those sounds, and send them over an electrified wire.During a visit to Washington, DC, he called on Joseph Henry, a scientist who was a pioneer in research related to electricity. He presented his ideas to him and asked his advice-should he let someone else perfect the telephone or should he do it himself?Henry encouraged Bell to do it himself, to which he complained that he lacked the necessary knowledge of electricity. Henry's brief answer was, "Then get it." And so Bell studied electricity. A year later, when he obtained a patent for the telephone, the patent office officials credited him with knowing more about electricity than all the other inventors combined. Study, work, hope, and perseverance are "common things," but they are the keys to uncommon success in life. And as Bell discovered, perseverance is often the most challenging. Longfellow wrote: "The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight. JUL. 23, 2026Always do a good job."The Lord God put the man in the garden of Eden to care for it and work it." Ge 2:15 NCVThe first thing God did when He made Adam was put him to work. That's because work gives us a sense of purpose, meaning, and dignity. "God put the man in the garden...to... work it." So Adam was a gardener. But whether you count cash in a bank, trade futures on Wall Street, flip burgers in a beach-side stand, whip up pasta specials at a five-star restaurant, fell giant timber in the forest or split and deliver firewood, coach a team, pastor a congregation, publish bestselling books, deliver newspapers in the early morning hours, star in your own television show, farm a large acreage, mow and edge neighborhood lawns, go out on the road as a salesman for computers, drive a truck loaded with machinery, build homes, clean swimming pools, argue cases before a judge, or settle family disputes as a counselor, always do a good job. A wise man once said: "Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it. Autograph your work with excellence." The biblical character Daniel did that. And like cream, he rose to the top in Babylon. "Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him" (Da 6:3 KJV).There are no small jobs, only people who perceive them as small and become small in doing them. JUL. 22, 2026Talk back to your giant."I come against you in the name of the Lord." 1Sa 17:45 NIVGoliath towered over David. But Davidlooked at Goliath through the eyes of his omnipotent God who sits high, looks low, and conquers all. "You come against me with sword and spear...but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." Intimidation is one of Satan's favorite weapons. He will get you to think yourself into a state of fearfulness. One day, cartoon character Charlie Brown was having lunch at school when he confided to his friend Linus that he didn't feel good enough to approach a certain young lady: "I can't talk to that little red-haired girl because she's something and I'm nothing. If I were something and she were nothing, I could talk to her, or if she were something and I were something, then I could talk to her. Or if she were nothing and I were nothing, then I also could talk to her.But she's something and I'm nothing so I can't talk to her." Linus responded: "For a nothing, Charlie Brown, you're really something!" Charlie Brown had allowed theredhead's beauty to intimidate him and force him to the sidelines. As His redeemed child, God thinks you're really something. David said, "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the enemy" (Ps 107:2 NKJV). And because David's words lined up with God's Word and His plan, Goliath was stopped. He had spent a minimum of one hour each day with his homeless friends and had helped renovate several properties on their behalf. In all his efforts, Goldberg never regarded the homeless as irresponsible or unreliable; he only saw them as people. Hurting people! He figured the house he purchased could be used as both a temporary shelter and a drop-in center—a place where homeless people might pick up mail, make phone calls, follow up job leads, and receive donated commodities. Four homeless men lived at the house, paying minimal rent to offset expenses. House rules were strict: no alcohol, no drugs, no loitering. Goldberg has never been rich. For twenty years he ran his own business, making about $25,000 a year designing and installing fire sprinklers. He simply was a man who saw an unmet need and found a way to help meet it. Mother Teresa said: "We cannot all do great things, but we can all do small things with great love." Col 1:10 NKJVMany people know how Helen Keller overcame the difficult physical challenge of being left without hearing, speech, and sight after contracting fever as a baby and how she eventually learned to communicate by learning Braille. Her life inspired millions of people. One of her ardent admirers was author Mark Twain. She was invited to visit every president at the White House from her childhood on. What many people don't know, however, is how hard Helen worked as an adult. After graduating with honors from Radcliffe College, she worked to help others until her death at the age of eighty-eight.She authored numerous articles. She gave lectures for the American Foundation for the Blind and raised millions of dollars for them.On her eightieth birthday, she was given the Helen Keller International Award for those who give outstanding help to the blind. In the Bible, Paul prayed for the Colossian Christians: "That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him" (Col 1:10 NKJV). And he gave them two ways in which they could do this: "Being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God" (NKJV). JUL. 7, 2026The harvest law."Whoever sows generously will also reap generously." 2Co 9:6 NIVThe Bible clearly teaches that those who give generously to God's kingdom purposes will receive something back in return for participating. Furthermore, there's a correlation between how much you give and how much you get back. "Whoever sows generously will also reap generously." This is good news for reluctant givers. When you give away something valuable, it can feel like a loss. You had something; now you don't. And that can be a tremendous disincentive to give more. But Paul put this concept in a completely different light. He said that giving to God's work is not giving something away. It's an investment, not a loss. The farmer who sows doesn't lose seed; he gains a crop. No rational farmer would say, "I'm afraid to sow my seed because then I won't have the seed anymore. What will happen if I need this seed?" Any farmer knows that if he wants a crop, he must sow his seed. This is powerful news for anyone who's afraid to give because of financial insecurity. It suggests that the wisest move we could make financially is to begin sowing our financial seed. When we do, God gets involved in our finances. And that's the most financially secure place we could be. Why? Because when we give, it enables God to return to us more than we've given, to entrust more to us in this life. This in turn enables us to give more. Jer 29:11 NIVNothing is more gratifying than knowing one's purpose-even when opposition seems unbearable and other distractions threaten to overshadow it. Often when people say they don't have a passion for anything, they mean they don't have faith to believe they could actually do what they really desire in their hearts. Jesus refused to let anyone pull Him away from His purpose. "Someone in the crowd said to him, 'Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me! Jesus replied, 'Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?'" (Lk 12:13-14 NIV). In essence, Jesus was saying, "I'm not about to get distracted by conducting an arbitration hearing between you two. That's not part of My purpose for being here on earth." Even up to the day that Jesus gave His life on the cross, there were many sick people needing healing and a myriad of other impossible situations that needed His attention. He knew that through the power of His death and resurrection, all could be addressed. So, despite unresolved problems, He confidently gave His heavenly Father this report on His ministry: "I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do" (Jn 17:4 NLT). Jesus refused to let His disciples, Satan, well-meaning family members, needy people, or anyone else distract Him from His purpose. And you must learn to do that too. This raises the question: Can you state your God-given purpose in a single sentence? Gal 6:9 NIVSome of the world's most successful people were told by so-called experts that they didn't have what it took to be a success in the professions they had chosen. In 1927, Lucille Ball was told by an instructor at the John Murray Anderson Drama School, "Try any other profession. Any other." Universal Pictures dismissed both Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds, claiming that Reynolds had no talent and Eastwood talked too slowly.Malcolm Forbes, the late editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine, failed to become part of the staff of his school newspaper when he was an undergraduate at Princeton University. Decca Recording Company executives responded negatively to the audition of four young musicians, saying,"We don't like their sound. Groups with guitars are on the way out." So the Beatles took their sound elsewhere. For seven years, a young inventor named Chester Carlson took his idea to twenty corporations, all of which turned him down. The Haloid Company finally purchased the rights to his electronic paper-copying process. And Haloid became Xerox. Don't be discouraged if you are not finding the acceptance and success you desire right now. Your story is still being written! JUN. 16, 2026Understanding the kingdom of God."The kingdom of God is within you." Lk 17:21 NKJVIn one sense, the kingdom of God is future, eternal, and heavenly. When Christ returns to set up His kingdom on earth, the prophecy will be fulfilled: "The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!" (Rev 11:15 NKJV). What a glorious day that will be for all of God's redeemed children. But until then, Jesus said, "The kingdom of God is within you." That means as a born-again believer living in this world, you're called to demonstrate what it means to live under the rule of the King of kings and Lord of lords. Winston Churchill famously quipped: "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried." All human governments are flawed and ultimately destined to fail because they are made up of flawed human beings. So as citizens of the kingdom of God, we are called to be "light" that illuminates darkness and dispels ignorance, and "salt" that flavors, cleanses, heals, and enriches the lives of those we come in contact with (see Mt 5:13-14). We are called to practice the principles of God's kingdom in the marketplace of life.Whether you work in education, transportation, medicine, politics, agriculture, IT, sales, manufacturing, etc., you are called to demonstrate the benefits of living under the rule of Christ and by the guidance of His indwelling Holy Spirit. "The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord." When Christ returns, that promise will be totally fulfilled. One day while looking at a tree, he realized the truth of the Psalmist's words-that it had to be rooted in something other and deeper than itself (see Ps 1:1-3). That day, he decided to make his life an experiment in what he called a "habitual, silent, secret conversation of the soul with God." He's known today by the new name given to him by his friends: Brother Lawrence. He remained obscure throughout his life and spent the rest of his days in the monastery kitchen. But the people around him found that rivers of living water flowed out of him that made them want to know God the way he did. "The good brother found God everywhere," one of them wrote, "as much while he was repairing shoes as while he was praying with the community!" After Brother Lawrence died, his friends put together a book of his letters and conversations. They grant him access to your spirit. It's not God's will that you live a defeated, unhappy life.Turn a deaf ear to the old voices and make new choices. "The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good inheritance" (Ps 16:6 NKJV). Live out of your inheritance, not your circumstances. God has already promised you victory and provided you with weapons for the fight."Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. JUN. 8, 2026How to make anger work for you (2)"Sensible people control their temper." Pr 19:11 NLTAnger scares many of us because we've been harmed by it. But anger can be evidence that a person cares about someone or something. Nothing wrong is ever made right without someone becoming angry about it. If you shut down all anger, you eliminate passion, intimacy, and love. Here are two ways to make anger work for you: (1) Direct your anger at the right target. Your spouse is not the enemy; Satan is. He comes to "steal, and to kill, and to destroy" (Jn 10:10 KJV). He's the one trying to drive a wedge between you. Consciously move your focus from your spouse to the problem. For example, get angry at your lack of finances, not your spouse's spending. Get angry at demands pulling you in different directions, not your spouse staying late at work. Get angry at the limitations on intimacy, not your spouse saying no to sex. Put the problem "out there," separate from you and your spouse. See yourselves as fighting the problem together. Attack the problem, not each other. (2) Look for the pain. Find the pain that triggered the anger; it's almost always there. Look for it in your spouse and in your own heart. What need isn't being met? What wound has been exposed? What shame or fear is aroused? When you identify the pain, you'll be miles closer to the solution. But beware! By being vulnerable, you may end up wounding each other sometimes; acknowledge it and forgive quickly. Staying engaged while risking vulnerability will increase intimacy more than anything else. JUN. 11, 2026"Overcome evil with good"."Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Ro 12:21 NKJVDuring the Korean War, a South Korean civilian was arrested by the communists and ordered to be shot. When the young communist leader learned that the prisoner in his charge was the head of an orphanage caring for young children, he decided to spare him. Instead, he ordered the execution of the man's son. The nineteen-year-old son was shot in the presence of his father. After the war, the young communist leader was captured by United Nations forces and condemned to death. But before the sentence could be carried out, the Christian whose son had been killed pleaded for the life of the killer. He argued that the communist had been young when he ordered the execution, and that he really didn't know what he was doing. "Give him to me," the man requested, "and I will train him." Unusual though it was, the United Nations forces granted his request, and the father took the murderer of his son into his own home and took care of him. The Bible says, "Love never fails" (1Co 13:8 NKJV). And by being exposed to the love of God, that young communist leader became a Christian and eventually went on to become the pastor of a church. Have you been hurt, betrayed, or treated unfairly? Instead of retaliating in anger, handle it scripturally: "Never pay back evil with more evil...Never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. JUN. 10, 2026God has given you seed to SOW!"The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed." Mt 13:31 NIVJesus said: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches" (vv. 31-32 NIV). A mustard seed is only two millimeters in diameter and comes in three primary varieties: yellow, black, and white. Within that seed is a remarkable nutritional profile, including vitamins A, B6, B12, C, E, and K. It's also a source of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and zinc. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Jesus pointed out that when it's planted, it can grow up and become one of the largest trees in the garden, blessing the birds of the air by providing them with a home. Paul wrote: "Now may He who supplies seed to the sower...multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness" (2Co 9:10 NKJV). Who does God give "seed" to? Sowers, not hoarders! What does God do with your seed when you sow it? He multiplies it! JUN. 9, 2026Tell the truth."Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight." Pr 12:22 NKJVRosalie Elliot made it to the fourth round of a national spelling contest in Washington, DC. The eleven-year-old from South Carolina was asked to spell the word avowal. In her soft southern accent, she spelled the word, but the judges were unable to determine if she had used an a or an e as the next-to-last letter. They debated among themselves for several minutes as they listened to the recording, but it was too accent-blurred to decipher. Finally, the chief judge put the question to the only person who knew the answer. "Was the letter an a, or was it an e?" he asked Rosalie. By this time, being surrounded by whispering young spellers, Rosalie knew the correct spelling of the word. Still, without hesitation, she replied that she had misspelled the word, and she walked from the stage. The entire audience stood and applauded, including some fifty newspaper reporters. The moment was a proud one for her parents. Even in defeat, she was a victor. MAY. 15, 2026Rest in your redemption."By this you shall know that the living God is among you." Jos 3:10 NKJVAs the Jordan River swelled to a mile in width, crossing it was no small task.Especially with millions of people! God said, "Go over this Jordan, you and all this people" (Jos 1:2 NKVJ). Do you think they were scared? Would you have been? "The feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water" (Jos 3:15 NKJV). It was the smallest of steps, but with God, the smallest step of faith can activate the mightiest of miracles. As they touched the water, the flow stopped as if someone had shut off the water main. Next, we read: "All Israel crossed over on dry ground" (v. 17 NKJV). By performing this miracle, God wanted them to know: "By this you shall know that the living God is among you." For Joshua's people, assurance came as they stood on dry land looking back at the Jordan. For us, assurance comes as we stand on the finished work of Christ and look back at the cross. Let the cross convince you. Be settled about God's faithfulness. The psalmist describes a person of faith this psalmist describes a person of faith this way: "He is settled in his mind that Jehovah will take care of him" (Ps 112:7 TLB). Life has many unanswered questions, but God's promise to save you needn't be one of them. "He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?" (Ro 8:32 NKJV). Rest in your redemption. The past is past. MAY. 21, 2026Don't allow yourself to be distracted."Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." Heb 12:1 NKJVIn March 1987, Eamon Coughlan was running in the qualifying heat at the World Indoor Track Championships in Indianapolis. He was the reigning world record holder at 1500 meters and was favored to win the race. Unfortunately, with two and a half laps left, he tripped and fell hard. But he got up, and with great effort managed to catch the race leaders. With twenty yards to go, he was in third place, which would have been good enough to qualify for the final race. Then Coughlan made a fateful mistake—he looked over his shoulder to the inside. Seeing no one there, he relaxed his effort slightly. What he hadn't noticed was that a runner was charging hard on the outside. This runner passed him just a yard before the finish line, eliminating him from the finals. MAY. 20, 2026Blessings beyond your imagination."Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine." Eph 3:20 NIVPrayer Pastor Heidi Scanlon said: "God has blessings for us in categories we don't even know exist." That means God can create something out of nothing. He can seemingly come out of nowhere, and just when you need Him most, give you something you don't even have a category for. God says:'''For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts'" (Isa 55:8-9 NIV). You say, "If God has blessings that I don't even have categories for, how can I ask for them?" That's where the Holy Spirit, who dwells within you, comes to your aid: "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us... in accordance with the will of God" (Ro 8:26-27 NIV). And because the Holy Spirit prays in accordance with the will of God, you are blessed with wisdom beyond your knowledge, power beyond your strength, and favor beyond your ability. Paul put it this way: "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen" (Eph 3:20-21 NIV). Now you still must do your due diligence, for God cannot bless negligence. The wild horse would drag the burro for miles, throwing him around like a bag of feed. In several days, however, they would return.The little burro would be seen first, trotting back toward the ranch with his submissive steed in tow. Somewhere out in the wild, the horse would become exhausted and try to free itself of the burro. At that moment, the burro became the master of the two. The slow, patient, unimportant animal became the leader over the faster, more volatile, and more prized one. What made the difference?Having a steadfast purpose! And what was the burro's purpose? Going back home to the ranch! So no matter how many times they fought, tugged on the rope, and ended up on their backs kicking and fuming, each time the burro got back on his feet, he would take a few more steps in the direction of the ranch. It was only a matter of time until the tired and exhausted horse decided to join him. I have given Jericho into your hand.” Jos 6:2NKJVHere's what you need to know about the walls of Jericho: They were immense. They wrapped around the city like a suit of armor, forty feet above the ground. They were impenetrable. Here is what you need to know about Joshua: He didn't bring the walls down-God did. And God will do that for you too. Your Jericho is your fear, anger, bitterness, or prejudice. It's also your insecurity about the future; your guilt about the past; and your negativity, anxiety, and proclivity to criticize, over-analyze, or compartmentalize. Your Jericho is any circumstance, attitude, or mindset that keeps you from joy, peace, or rest. Jericho blocks your way, so its walls must fall! "Go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess" (Jos 1:11 NKJV).The verb translated as "possess" means "to occupy by driving out previous tenants and possessing in their place." But Satan won't leave without a fight, he will resist, he will push back. But he will not win. Why? Because God has already declared that you are the victor. "The Lord said to Joshua: 'See! If you relate to God best through the contemplative pathway, you love large blocks of quietness and uninterrupted time alone. It is very likely that when you were a child, your parents would tell you to go outside and play with other kids more. Reflection comes naturally to you. You often feel like an observer in life.Here are some Scriptures you easily identify with: "Meditate within your heart on your bed and be still. Selah" (Ps 4:4 NKJV). "Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret" (Ps 37:7 NKJV). "Be still and know that I am God" (Ps 46:10 NKJV). "Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation." God is most present to you when distractions and noises are removed.Images, metaphors, and pictures help you as you pray. If you get too busy or spend too much time with too many people hanging around, you begin to feel drained and stretched thin. You do not require much external stimulation. Making time to listen to God in silence and solitude is vital to the health of your soul, and it's necessary for you to experience a deepening sense of His presence.  You need regular, protected, intense, undistracted time alone. But here's a word of caution: The Bible says, "If God so loved us, we also ought to love one another" (1Jn 4:11 NKJV). And love takes time and effort. Sometimes it requires sacrifice. The writer of the book of Hebrews said: "Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured" (Heb 12:1-2 NKJV). Paul wrote to the Philippian believers: "There is one thing I always do. Forgetting the past and straining toward what is ahead, I keep trying to reach the goal and get the prize for which God called me" (Php 3:13-14 NCV). Chances are you aren't at the starting line, nor are you at the finishing tape. You're somewhere in the middle. When running a race, the start is always filled with such enthusiasm and energy. And the finish holds such promise as we run the final stretch and reach our goal.But the middle of the race-when we are long past the start and not sure how far away the finish might be-is what often tests us. That's why the prophet Habakkuk wrote: "O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years!" It's in "the midst" or the middle of the race that we need encouragement, that we need our second wind, and that we need to refocus on the prize that awaits us. APR. 30, 2026Spiritual pathways (5)"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might." Ecc 9:10 NKJVThe activist pathway. When you're on this spiritual pathway, you have a high level of energy. This may be one of your favorite Scriptures: "Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might." But one of the dangers of relating to God best through the activist pathway is that a big chunk of your motivation can be self-fulfillment and self-satisfaction. Hence Paul wrote: "Since you are so eager to have the special abilities the Spirit gives, seek those that will strengthen the whole church" (1Co 14:12 NLT). When you are an activist, you love a fast-paced, problem-filled, complex, strenuous way of life. At the end of the day, you want to be able to say, "I ran really hard. I used every ounce of effort and zeal at my disposal, and it's all for You, God." One biblical example of an activist is Nehemiah. When he heard that the walls of his beloved Jerusalem were in ruins, he wept, he prayed, he petitioned the king for the resources to rebuild them, and then he rolled up his sleeves and went to work. If you are an activist, you need a cause. Without it, your spiritual life will stagnate. But here is a word of caution:Don't get so excited about your cause that you run over people or exploit them. And here's another word of caution: If you are an activist, you may have a hard time discerning God's true calling from your own strong impulses to action. APR. 29, 2026Spiritual pathways (4)"I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go into the house of the Lord.'" Ps 122:1 NKJVThe worship pathway. When you're on the worship pathway, you resonate with the Psalmist: "I was glad when they said to me,'Let us go into the house of the Lord.!" Something deep inside you feels released when praise is given. Your heart opens up and you come alive. You find yourself in tears, sometimes in moments of deep joy, because God seems so close. But here are two cautions if you're on this pathway: (1) Don't judge people who are not as outwardly expressive as you. Some of them grew up in churches where no one raised a finger, let alone a hand in worship. (2) Guard against an experience-based spirituality that has you always looking for the next "worship high." C. S. Lewis wrote about the fatal sin of saying, "Encore!" by demanding that God reproduce an experience or an emotion. He said that of all prayers, this may be the one God is least likely to grant because it can lead us to worship an experience rather than the God to whom our experience points. Music, for instance, can be a great gift to worship. But because music affects our feelings so powerfully, we can grow dependent on it to produce a certain emotional response. In this case, you may need to spend some time worshiping God without music, so that your worship is based on who God is and not a matter of getting swept up in certain sounds. APR. 27, 2026Spiritual pathways (3)"I thought about my ways." Ps 119:59 NKJVThe serving pathway. On the serving pathway, you find God's presence seems most tangible when you're helping others. You identify with the words of Jesus: "Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these...you did it to Me" (Mt 25:40 NKJV).And you may find that you are uncomfortable in a setting where you don't have a role to play or a service to perform. An example of this would be Dorcas, whom the Bible says, "was full of good works and charitable deeds" (Ac 9:36 NKJV). Mother Teresa would be a modern counterpart to Dorcas. She said the primary reason she was so involved in serving was not that it was something she was supposed to do, but that it brought her joy. She often felt her own inadequacy when she was alone; but she never felt the presence of Jesus more strongly than in the presence of those she served. President Jimmy Carter has probably inspired more people as an ex-president than he did while he was in office because of his passion for servanthood through such channels as Habitat for Humanity. People on this pathway find that if they're just attending church but have no place to serve, God begins to feel distant.They need to be "plugged in." APR. 27, 2026Spiritual pathways (2)"Make me walk in the path of Your commandments." Ps 119:35 NKJVThe relational pathway. People who follow the relational pathway find that they have a deep sense of God's presence when they are involved in significant relationships. Jesus' words, "For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them" (Mt 18:20 NKJV), makes perfect sense to the relational type. If you are on the relational pathway, you may feel guilty when you hear other people speak of long periods of solitude with God and think: "Solitude wouldn't be so bad if I could just bring a bunch of other people along." You have often experienced key spiritual moments, such as being convicted of sin or being encouraged to persevere, as God speaks to you through other people. You are much more apt to practice prayer or acts of servanthood when you can do it in a relational context. When you are on the relational pathway, you tend to hear God speak to you more in a conversation than from a book. And you stagnate spiritually to the degree that you feel isolated. But there are two dangers you must guard against. One is superficiality-getting spread so thin relationally that no one gets past your external self to know you and love you and challenge you deeply. The second is becoming so dependent on the thoughts and counsel of others that you don't develop the sensitivity and ability to hear God for yourself. APR. 23, 2026Always acknowledge your dependence on God."Our qualification comes from God. He has enabled us." 2Co 3:5-6 NLTIn his classic book called Prayer, Dr. O.Hallesby wrote: "Prayer and helplessness are inseparable. Only those who are helpless can truly pray...Prayer therefore consists simply in telling God day by day in what ways we feel helpless. We are moved to pray every time the Spirit of God...emphasizes anew to us our helplessness, and we realize how impotent we are by nature to believe, to love, to hope, to serve, to sacrifice, to suffer, to read the Bible, to pray, and to struggle against our sinful desires." Now let's be clear: Feeling helpless is different from feeling hopeless or worthless; it's simply acknowledging our total dependence on God. Jesus said, "Without Me you can do nothing" (Jn 15:5 NKJV). God will never give you an assignment that does not require His input, His favor, and His enabling grace. Every action of God in your life is designed to increase, not decrease, your dependence on Him. If you can do it without God, you should stop and ask yourself, "Is this truly of God?" Paul wrote: "We are confident of all this because of our great trust in God through Christ. It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. He has enabled us" (2Co 3:4-6 NLT). David enjoyed all the privileges of being a king, yet he wrote: "I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinks upon me. APR. 22, 2026Raise the bar."Jonathan..David's brother, killed him."2Sa 21:21 NIVAfter David killed Goliath, four other men, including his nephew Jonathan, killed giants that rose up against the Israelites. "In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot— twenty-four in all. He was also descended from Rapha. When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah, David's brother, killed him" (2Sa 21:20-21 NIV). David had raised the bar. Witnessing the defeat of what others had previously deemed impossible gave them the strength to overcome their own giants. Until 1954, no one had ever run a mile in under four minutes, and most people assumed it was virtually impossible. But on May 6, 1954, at an Oxford University track meet, Roger Bannister completed the distance in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. He had slain the giant. Two months later, Australian John Landy broke Bannister's record, proving that the four-minute mile was as much a psychological as a physical barrier. In the first half of the twentieth century, many people attempted to climb Mount Everest and failed. It was the unconquerable giant in the world of mountain climbers. On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, were the first humans to reach the summit. Since then, over seven thousand climbers, ranging from age thirteen to eighty, have completed the expedition. David, Bannister, and Hillary all conquered giants of their day and inspired others to match and excel in their feats. You do yourself and others a disservice when you run from your giant. Pr 2:6 NIVBill Gates predicted: "There will be 'two societies' in the future; high-paid knowledge workers and low-paid service workers." The saying "knowledge is power" is true. And it's even more dynamic in the spiritual realm. The more you know about God, the more confident you'll be. Knowledge of God's Word can give clarity to the puzzling issues of life. When a certain religious sect tried to pull Jesus into one of their debates on a particular issue, He replied, "Your mistake is that you don't know the Scriptures, and you don't know the power of God" (Mt 22:29 NLT). There are some truths you need to settle in your heart and let them bring peace to your spirit. For example, no one else can thwart God's purpose for your life. "The Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?" (Isa 14:27 NIV). You also need to settle in your mind that no matter what happens, things are working out for your good. Therefore, you can resist anxiety and worry. "We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose" (Ro 8:28 NKJV). Daniel reminds us that God "gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him" (Da 2:21-22 NKJV). The "light" you need belongs to God. APR. 7, 2026The life-giving Word."The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." Jn 6:63 NKJVJesus was called "Rabbi" eleven times in the Gospels. But He wasn't like any other rabbi. Rabbis quoted others, but Jesus said, "Truly, I say to you..." In the gospel of John, He said it twice: "Truly, truly, I say to you..." The reason Jesus wasn't like any other rabbi was because He was God manifested in the flesh. And Paul says, "Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Col 2:2-3 NKJV). The early church fathers had a favorite saying: "The Gospels are a river in which a gnat can swim, and an elephant can drown." The Gospels-the record of Christ's life and teaching-have impacted the world so much that they have been translated into 2,527 languages. The second-most-translated book, Don Quixote, has been translated into about 60languages. To this day, the Bible remains the bestselling book of all time. In the academic world, scholars keep score of how often any articles they write are cited by other scholars. By this year's secular score, Jesus' intellectual impact is unprecedented. Why is this? Because when everything else fails, God's Word works. Jesus explained it this way: "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." If you are a teacher, you know that the number one question in any class is: "Will this be on the final?" APR. 6, 2026Developing a spiritual mindset."Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." Ro 8:5 NIVMuscle memory isn't stored in your muscles. It's a procedural memory that is stored in your brain any time you repeat a muscle movement. Whether it's putting a golf ball or playing a violin, the muscle memory becomes stronger the more it is repeated.Have you heard about the 10,000-hour rule? Psychologists say that's the amount of time it takes to become an expert at anything. That's encouraging because it means anybody can do it, but it's discouraging because it means there are no shortcuts, no matter how smart or gifted you are. Just like a foreign language, developing a spiritual mindset is a learning curve. Can you imagine being frustrated on the first day of a foreign language class because you aren't fluent? That's how we often feel when we aren't fluent in prayer, or strong in faith, or disciplined in our habits. Psalm 84:7 says we "go from strength to strength" (NIV). You'll be working on this for the rest of your life, one day at a time. You'll keep benchmarking. Your faith ceiling becomes your faith floor. And make no mistake about it-those spiritual disciplines accrue compound interest. And they pay off in terms of joy, fulfillment, and power with God. "Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. Worship is total preoccupation...The greatest honor and respect we can give to anyone is our undivided attention…Reverence. I express my admiration for all His attributes...At this point, distractions start to pop up like dandelions...I will suddenly remember a task I need to put on my to-do list. I have learned to jot down the task in my journal and ignore the other issues for what they are-mere distractions that can be dealt with later. I have also learned that praying audibly helps to minimize wandering thoughts…Ask. I ask for forgiveness for my sins, making every effort to be specific. I pray for the power to live a Christian life and ask God to give me a passion for His Word and for prayer. MAR. 9, 2026Just play your part."Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them." Ro 12:6 NKJVIf you study famous musicians, you'll often find that they learned their craft by playing in a band or orchestra. That's because certain skills—learning to blend with other instruments, keeping tempo, learning to play louder or softer, following the conductor's lead—can only be learned by playing with others. And what's true of a band or orchestra is even truer of a community of believers. Jesus illustrated this in His famous parable of the talents (see Mt 25:14-30). One man was given five talents and ended up with ten. Another man was given two talents and ended up with four. A third man was given one talent, and he buried it. In a sense, Jesus was talking about people playing their parts and how important that is to God's kingdom. Not everyone plays the same instrument, and not everyone has the same part. Some instruments are louder than others, and some parts are bigger than others. It's not how much you have that matters to Jesus; it's what you do with what you have that matters to Him.There are no insignificant talents in God's kingdom. Our talents may differ in amount, but they all come from the same source. All Christ wants you to do is play your part. He does not expect the same results, but He does expect the same effort. He never compares you with anyone else. He compares you only with you. He doesn't look at what you have; He looks at what you do with what you have. MAR. 5, 2026It came to pass-not stay."It came to pass." Ge 4:3 NKJVThere is a little phrase repeated 436 times in the Bible: "It came to pass." Whatever trial you are going through today, remind yourself, "It came to pass-not stay." If the fulfillment of the vision God gave you seems to be taking longer than you thought, remind yourself "it will come to pass!" In his biography, God in My Corner, the two-time world heavyweight champion George Foreman tells a story about an elderly woman who was asked her favorite Scripture verse. She replied: "And it came to pass." She explained why: "I know that whenever a trial comes, it doesn't come to stay; it comes—to pass." And the Scripture on the flipside of this coin reads:"Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion" (Php 1:6 NIV).
