Episode 291: Identity Disruption Following Weight Loss (Part 1)
I often hear from patients who have lost a significant amount of weight that they no longer know who they are! They don’t recognize their bodies, for one thing, understanding that their head hasn’t kept pace with the amount of physical weight they have lost. They also talk about not knowing how to live at this weight, noting their relationships are different, people treat them differently, and they feel uncertain about how and where they fit in! This is identity disruption and it is common after major life changes… and significant weight loss is a major life change! Listen in and learn more about identity, identity disruption and identity re-creation.The Weight Loss Winformation Podcast gives you essential psychological information to help you lose weight and more importantly, to help keep you at a healthy weight for your body! Episode 286: Reward or Self-Sabotage
A very wise woman during one of the weekly online support groups on the BariAftercare Facebook page bravely shared a story about how she had rewarded herself with highly processed, non-nutritious food after a stressful day she’d had. She then courageously acknowledged that she had engaged in self-sabotaging behavior and had called it a reward. This opened up a great conversation that I thought would be helpful to podcast listeners! Episode 285: Internalized Weight Stigma
I doubt anyone listening to this podcast would argue that weight stigma, also called weight bias, or more crudely known as fat shaming, is wrong. Inexcusable. Not okay – no matter what. We collectively feel outrage about fat shaming on social media, in boardrooms or in the classrooms. What then, do you think about, and how do you feel about the internalized weight stigma, weight bias, fat shaming that takes place in your own head – about yourself. This episode will get you thinking about how you likely shame yourself about having a disease … and how you may even participate in stigmatizing others who have the disease of obesity. In my 37 years of recovering from the chronic disease of addiction, I have known what it is like to have healthy support! My best friend and the person I can trust to celebrate the good things in my life, talk me through and be there with me through the difficult times in life, and give me the biggest hugs and most loving kicks in the shorts when I need them joins me in this episode. Together, we’ll share what it has looked like over these 37 years to be the healthiest of healthy support people for each other!
