Caught in a MOUNTAIN of Lies: The Exposure of DISGRACED LDS General Authority Paul H. Dunn
The Deception of Paul H. Dunn: Fabricated Miracles and False LegaciesElder Paul H. Dunn was once one of the most popular, charismatic, and beloved General Authorities in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Renowned for his moving sermons to the youth, Dunn built an entire legacy [00:05] on spectacular personal anecdotes—claiming he was a professional pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals who personally rubbed shoulders with baseball legend Lou Gehrig, and a heroic World War II combat survivor who dodged machine-gun fire on the beaches of the Pacific. But it was all a lie. Thanks to the rigorous, ground-breaking investigative reporting of journalist Lynn Packer, the truth finally came to light. Packer’s deep-dive investigation into military archives, baseball rosters, and public records revealed that Dunn had completely fabricated or grossly exaggerated his most famous "faith-promoting" stories. In this video, we use archival clips to dissect Paul H. Dunn's most famous claims side-by-side with the real evidence uncovered by Lynn Packer.Original Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RciDx0JZC1o&list=WL&index=3&t=100sPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Faith Unraveled: Did They Lose Their Morals After Leaving Mormonism?
Faith Unraveled is one of my favorite deconstruction channels. In this episode, Elisha Lee and her husband share their thoughts on one of the most common questions former believers face: What happens to your morals when you lose your faith?Through authentic storytelling and thoughtful discussion, they explore life after Mormonism, confronting patriarchy, overcoming toxic perfectionism, rebuilding identity, and creating a positive future outside a high-demand religion.Their honesty, vulnerability, and insights make this a fascinating conversation for anyone navigating faith transitions, religious deconstruction, or life after the LDS Church. In today's video, we'll watch and discuss their latest episode and explore why so many former Mormons resonate with the Lee family's journey.🎥 Original video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AeaUl4ZlHQ#FaithUnraveled #ExMormon #Mormonism #FaithCrisis #ReligiousTrauma #Deconstruction #PostMormon #LDSChurch #MormonStories #LifeAfterReligion #MormonNewsRoundup #FaithTransition #RecoveryFromReligion #Exvangelical #LeavingMormonismPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Told She Couldn't Go on an LDS Mission Because….She Wore a Bikini?! 👙😳
The God-versations Archive is going viral for exposing some of the most controversial and unexpected experiences inside LDS culture. In this clip, a young woman shares how she was allegedly told she couldn’t serve a mission because she wore a bikini in a photo. What started as a simple social media moment turns into a much bigger conversation about modesty rules, control, and religious expectations placed on young women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Ex-Mormon and feminist perspectives are amplifying the discussion online, and people are divided over whether this is about “standards”… or something more complicated.👉 Source: https://www.tiktok.com/@thegodversationsarchive#LDS #MormonStories #ExMormon #FaithDeconstruction #GodversationsArchivePlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Ex-Mormon Bishop Bill Reel on Church Money, Faith Crisis & LGBTQ Policy | MNRU Throwback Ep. 106
In this throwback episode of the Mormon News Roundup, Dives sits down with former LDS Bishop and well-known ex-Mormon podcaster Bill Reel for a wide-ranging conversation that still hits hard today. We dig into major issues shaping modern Mormon discourse, including the finances of the LDS Church, ongoing faith transitions and deconstruction, and the Church’s evolving (and often controversial) stance on LGBTQ members and policies.Bill brings his signature mix of experience, research, and candid reflection as we explore what happens when belief, leadership, and institutional trust collide. This is a re-release of Episode 106, originally one of the standout conversations on the channel.🎧 Full episode here: https://youtu.be/heLQ6QvVNEI📺 Subscribe for more Mormon News Roundup discussions, interviews, and commentary. Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. 2015 Anti-Gay LDS Policy of Exclusion: Justifications, Retractions & What Leaders ACTUALLY Said
In this episode, we revisit the 2015 LDS Church policy that restricted children from baptism and confirmation if they had a parent in a same-sex relationship. Church leaders later described the policy as revelation and doctrinally consistent, but it was quietly reversed just a few years later. We walk through key public statements and interviews from senior LDS leadership, including Russell M. Nelson, Dallin H. Oaks, Todd Christofferson, and Sheri Dew, placing their explanations in sequence to examine how the policy was framed publicly over time. The video then contrasts those explanations with the policy’s later withdrawal, raising questions about institutional messaging, hindsight framing, and how doctrinal justification is constructed in real time. This is a structured, documentary-style breakdown of the language used, the timeline of statements, and how the narrative around the policy evolved.Based on: https://tinyurl.com/2sey66k7Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Why "You Used to Believe" Is One of the Weakest Arguments Against Atheism | NonStampCollector
If you've spent years examining your beliefs, changing your mind based on evidence, and carefully considering both sides of an issue, does refusing to be persuaded by the same old arguments make you closed-minded?In this video, I respond to a claim I've heard hundreds of times: that former believers who don't return to faith after hearing familiar religious arguments are somehow unwilling to consider new ideas. We'll explore why changing your mind once doesn't obligate you to keep changing it back whenever someone repeats arguments you've already evaluated.Along the way, I also give a shoutout to one of my favorite YouTube channels, NonStampCollector, whose hilarious animated videos combine sharp atheist humor with thoughtful commentary.Have you ever been told you're "closed-minded" simply because you're no longer convinced by arguments you've already examined? ExMormon Lawyer Reacts: LDS Church SUES Mormon Stories?! SOBERMORMON Breaks it Down!
The LDS Church has reportedly filed a trademark lawsuit against Mormon Stories and John Dehlin. But what exactly are the damages? Can a church claim it lost tithing revenue because members listened to a podcast? Can it argue that people were "led astray" by long-form interviews featuring believing Mormons, former Mormons, scholars, historians, and everyday members sharing their experiences? In this video, an ex-Mormon lawyer breaks down the legal claims, explores the strengths and weaknesses of the case, and examines what trademark law is actually designed to protect. We'll discuss:⚖️ What trademark law covers—and what it doesn't⚖️ Whether "lost tithing" could ever qualify as damages⚖️ Free speech concerns and religious criticism⚖️ Mormon Stories' role in the Mormon and ex-Mormon community⚖️ What this lawsuit could mean for content creators and critics of powerful institutionsWhether you're an active Latter-day Saint, former Mormon, nuanced believer, or simply interested in religious freedom and free speech, this analysis offers a legal perspective on one of the most talked-about disputes in the Mormon world.Original video from the SOBER MORMON TikTok channel:https://www.tiktok.com/@sober.mormon#MormonStories #JohnDehlin #LDSChurch #Mormon #ExMormon #TrademarkLaw #ReligiousFreedom #FreeSpeech #MormonNews #Mormonism #LatterDaySaints #LegalAnalysis #ExMormonLawyer #SoberMormon #MormonStoriesPodcastPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. My Name is Steve | 35 Years of Prayer Couldn’t Change Me | Leaving Mormonism & Finding Freedom
Steve was a sixth-generation Mormon who spent decades believing that faith, obedience, and prayer could change the deepest parts of who he was. For 35 years, he tried to live a life shaped by expectation, fear, and devotion—while quietly struggling with his identity.Everything changed after 9/11, when a moment of global shock triggered a personal crisis of belief. What followed was a rapid unraveling of every foundational assumption Steve had about the Church, his faith, and his future. In just a few hours of research, he says the entire system he had built his life on collapsed. This is Steve’s story of leaving Mormonism, rebuilding his life from the ground up, and ultimately finding peace, family, and love outside the Church. Today, he is married to his husband, co-parents a blended family of six children, and describes a life that is happier and more authentic than he ever thought possible.Steve’s journey includes his involvement in controversial LDS-era “reparative therapy” culture, his divorce and rebuilding of relationships, and his eventual transition into a life he describes as free from fear and religious constraint. He concludes with a simple statement:“My name is Steve, and I’m an Ex Mormon.”Additional Reading: https://wasmormon.org/profile/steve-lee/Original Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFLGJyXG-UQPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. 7 Questions That Prove Mormonism Isn't Traditional Christianity
Can Mormonism and historic Christianity truly be considered the same faith? In this episode, we examine an article by Eric Johnson of Mormonism Research Ministry (MRM) that presents seven challenging questions for Latter-day Saints. Topics include the Great Apostasy, the nature of God, premortal existence, exaltation and becoming gods, salvation by grace, temple ordinances, and baptism for the dead.Whether you agree or disagree with MRM's conclusions, these questions highlight some of the most significant theological differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and traditional Evangelical Christianity.Article discussed in this video:[https://mrm.org/7-questions](https://mrm.org/7-questions)Topics covered:• The Great Apostasy and Restoration• Does God the Father have a physical body?• Are all people literally spirit children of God?• Can humans become gods?• Grace vs. works in salvation• Temple ordinances and exaltation• Baptism for the deadWhat do you think—are these differences fundamental, or can Mormonism still be considered a Christian faith tradition? Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. The Secret Warning Signs of an LDS Predator? | The Joseph Bishop Expose *WORLD EXCLUSIVE*
Were there warning signs before the MTC scandal? In 2018, a shocking recording surfaced of a woman confronting former Provo Missionary Training Center President Joseph Bishop about sexual assault. The story gripped the community—but many asked: How did this happen? Could he have been stopped sooner? It turns out, the red flags were there decades ago. Before the MTC, Bishop was the President of Weber State College in the 1970s. In a forgotten historical oral history interview, Jan Tyler (former Dean of Women) exposed a toxic administrative culture under Bishop's rule. She described a climate of fear, "enemy lists," intimidation, illegal wiretapping rumors, and severe misogyny. In this MNRU world exclusive, I’m Dives, and I have fully dramatized and reconstructed this chilling historical interview so you can experience it in an immersive audio drama form.🔗 Read the original source material and transcript analysis here: https://thoughtsonthingsandstuff.com/former-dean-of-women-at-weber-speaks-out-about-joseph-l-bishop/What you will hear in this episode:The alleged "enemy lists" and surveillance used to control faculty. How rumors of Bishop’s powerful LDS connections shielded him.The legal battle Jan Tyler fought for equal pay and discrimination. The shocking tactics used to push out dissenting voices. To my knowledge, this is the only place online where you can hear this interview presented in full dramatized form.If you appreciate deep dives into institutional accountability and historical reconstructions, please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and hit the notification bell. Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. When LDS Masterbat*on Shame Becomes Deadly: The Tragic Story of Kip Eliason & Purity Culture Trauma
This video examines the tragic case of Kip Eliason, a 16-year-old who died by su*cide in 1982 after struggling with intense guilt and shame tied to teachings about s*xual morality within his religious upbringing.Kip’s story has become a widely discussed example of how ordinary adolescent development—especially s*xual curiosity and masturbation—can be reframed as profound moral failure, leading to overwhelming psychological distress. This discussion is based on reporting and analysis found here:https://thoughtsonthingsandstuff.com/a-latter-day-tragedy-suicide-over-masturbation/In this episode, we explore:How purity-based moral teachings can intensify adolescent shameThe psychological impact of guilt-centered s*xual messagingHistorical religious rhetoric surrounding chastity and “virtue”How institutional messaging has evolved over timeThe broader question of responsibility when doctrine and mental health collideThe intent is not sensationalism, but reflection on how belief systems can unintentionally shape self-perception in vulnerable individuals. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of self-harm, help is available. Chris once served a mission in Japan and remembers the spiritual experiences and feelings from that time very vividly. Top 5 Reasons People Call Joseph Smith a Fraud
In this episode of Understanding Mormonism, John Dehlin explores one of the most controversial questions in Latter-day Saint history: why do some critics label Joseph Smith a fraud?Drawing from historical claims and critical scholarship, this discussion outlines five major areas often cited by skeptics, including:• Joseph Smith’s early treasure-digging and “seer stone” practices• The golden plates narrative and translation process of the Book of Mormon• Claims of linguistic translation abilities (including the Book of Abraham and Kinderhook Plates)• The Kirtland Safety Society banking controversy• Public denial of polygamy alongside later historical evidenceThis presentation reflects arguments made by critics and independent scholars, and invites viewers to examine the evidence, context, and competing interpretations for themselves.Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or simply curious about Mormon history, this episode aims to provide a clear overview of some of the most frequently discussed criticisms surrounding Joseph Smith and the origins of the movement.About the series:Understanding Mormonism is a reader-supported publication and video series by John Dehlin, Ph.D., focused on exploring the history, theology, and cultural impact of the Latter-day Saint tradition.Subscribe for more in-depth discussions on faith, doubt, and religious history.Based on: https://johndehlin.substack.com/p/was-joseph-smith-a-fraud-please-sharePlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. The LDS Church’s Self-Destruction Cycle (And Why It Keeps Happening)
The LDS (Mormon) Church Seems to Be Addicted to Accelerating Its Own Demise (in the U.S.)Every time the LDS Church publicly targets a vulnerable group or outspoken critic, a predictable cycle unfolds—and it may be fueling its own decline. In this episode, we break down the repeating pattern:• Public crackdowns bring attention• Members discover critical resources (like Mormon Stories, CES Letter, etc.)• Curiosity leads to deeper research• Disillusionment grows• Members leave—and bring others with themFrom Proposition 8 to high-profile excommunications and recent legal actions, this “rinse and repeat” cycle appears to be accelerating disaffection, especially in the United States. We also explore:• The “Streisand Effect” and why suppression backfires• The role of PIMOs (Physically In, Mentally Out members)• Why disaffection spreads through families and social networks• Claims that the Church is prioritizing wealth and institutional power over retention• The shift toward international growth amid U.S. declineIs this strategy intentional—or an unintended consequence of leadership decisions? In this episode, I reflect on how profoundly the internet has reshaped Mormonism and the LDS Church over the past 25 years. From the rise of social media and ex-Mormon influencers to viral documentaries, podcasts, Reddit communities, and YouTube commentary, the digital world has fundamentally changed how Mormonism is discussed, criticized, defended, and experienced.I explore key themes including:The dominance of ex-Mormon and post-Mormon online communitiesThe rise of influencer-driven discourse about Mormonism on YouTube, TikTok, and podcastsMajor cultural “Mormon moments” amplified by the internet (Prop 8, CES Letter, Book of Mormon Musical, LGBTQ+ policy shifts, and more)The LDS Church’s often reactive approach to digital cultureThe growth of liberal, progressive, and nuanced Mormon communities onlineShifts in apologetics, scholarship, and institutional messagingThe changing global perception and branding of the LDS ChurchThis talk was originally prepared for the Sunstone Symposium and continues to evolve as I gather more perspectives.I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments—how do you think the internet has changed Mormonism?Based on: https://johndehlin.substack.com/p/how-the-internet-has-changed-mormonismPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. The Dark Side of My Mormon Mission | How Obedience Nearly Broke Me
From 2009 to 2011, Kayden served as a Mormon missionary in Russia, believing that strict obedience was the path to heaven. Fifteen years later, after leaving the Church, he reflects on how that experience shaped his faith, sense of self, and relationships with his family. In this video, Kayden shares the pressures, doubts, and struggles he faced while trying to follow the rules, and how the pursuit of “heaven” caused him to lose himself—and how he eventually found his way back.Original video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Im4p0jjYGxw#ExMormon #MissionaryExperience #FaithDeconstruction #LeavingTheChurch #MentalHealthPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Mormon Feminist ON FIRE! | Abby Hansen Throwback Highlight
Hey guys, it’s Throwback Thursday! Today we’re revisiting one of my favorite conversations on the show—my sit-down with Mormon feminist powerhouse Abby Hansen. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, Abby has been a bold and influential voice in Mormon feminist spaces for years, involved with Ordain Women and featured in the documentary Where We Stand (Journeyman Pictures). She dives into tough conversations about gender, equality in the church, and the challenges of raising kids when faith journeys diverge. In this highlight version (~30 minutes), you’ll hear Abby’s candid perspectives on Mormon feminism, working with transgender Latter-day Saints, and navigating family dynamics with honesty and empathy—without me talking over her.For the full, uncut conversation, check out Episode 129 of the Mormon News Roundup Link: https://youtube.com/live/5NNIqjEAd4Y💡 Don’t forget: no unhallowed hand can stop the conversation from progressing. Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. EPIC Conversation with the Glass Box Podcast (Bryce & Shannon) | Best Highlights!
For this Throwback Thursday, I’m revisiting my appearance on Episode 111 of the Glass Box Podcast with Bryce Blankenagel and Shannon Grover. In this highlight reel, we dive into Mormon history, doctrine, culture, and some of the bigger questions surrounding the Church in a conversation that was equal parts thoughtful, funny, and brutally honest. The Glass Box Podcast is known for its deep-dive format—examining Mormon history and current events while asking what details may have “slipped through the cracks.” Hosted by Bryce Blankenagel (of the Naked Mormonism podcast) and Shannon Grover, the show blends historical analysis, commentary, and media discussion in a long-form format that gives complicated topics the time they deserve. Our full conversation ran about an hour and a half, but for this Throwback Thursday episode I’ve trimmed it down into a highlight reel featuring some of the most interesting moments from the discussion. If you enjoy sharp insight, candid commentary, and deep dives into Mormon history and culture, you’ll probably enjoy this one.Sit back, grab a snack, and enjoy the highlights. And as always: No unhallowed hand can stop the Mormon News Roundup from progressing.#MormonNewsRoundup #GlassBoxPodcast #ExMormon #MormonHistoryPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. A Mormon Apostle at Harvard: Debunking Jeffrey Holland’s Dubious Restoration Claims
Today I respond directly to a talk given by Jeffrey R. Holland at Harvard Law School — not a devotional, not a church sermon, but a presentation delivered in one of the most prestigious academic settings in the world. In this talk, Holland claims that Mormonism represents the restoration of original Christianity, not a deviation from it. He makes sweeping assertions about:Apostasy and priesthood authorityThe nature of God and JesusWhy Latter-day Saints shouldn’t be considered creedal ChristiansThe First Vision, Adam and Eve, revelation, and divine authorityIn this video, I engage directly with Holland’s own words — no strawmen, no caricatures, no social-media summaries. I examine:Whether these claims hold up historicallyWhether they make sense biblicallyWhether they stand up logicallyAnd whether emotional conviction can substitute for evidenceWhen someone makes global historical claims and cosmic authority claims in an academic setting, the standard of evidence should be higher — not lower. In this response, I walk through why Holland’s presentation leans heavily on rhetoric and tradition, but offers no verifiable support for the extraordinary claims being made.If you care about truth, evidence, and how religious claims hold up outside the bubble of faith, this one’s for you.👍 If you found this useful, hit like💬 Drop your thoughts in the comments🔔 Subscribe for more critical breakdowns of Mormon claims and LDS leadership narrativesPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. Did Joseph Smith Fake the Gold Plates? Dan Vogel Breaks It Down
Hey everyone, I’m Dives, and welcome back to The Mormon News Roundup.Today, we’re breaking down a fascinating deep-dive from historian Dan Vogel on one of the most iconic claims in Mormonism: the Book of Mormon gold plates. His original video runs over an hour—but in this episode, I cut through the noise and give you the most important insights in a clear, digestible format.🎥 Watch Dan Vogel’s Original Videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEwzcMEzOaU&t=1s👇 What This Video Covers👉 If Joseph Smith fabricated the plates… how would he have actually done it using 1820s technology? In this breakdown, we explore:The real-world difficulty of creating metal plates in the 1820sWhy most witnesses never saw the plates uncoveredHow materials like tin, copper, or shingles could match descriptionsThe strange “greenish” appearance reported by early witnessesA modern tin plate replica experiment matching reported weightWhy the plates may only have needed to look convincing through a cloth or inside a boxAnd what Joseph Smith’s neighbors didn’t say that might matter🧠 Key TakeawayDan Vogel argues something nuanced:Fully gold, engraved plates? Highly implausibleA partially concealed, convincingly weighted object? Much more plausibleThis aligns with historical accounts suggesting the plates were often covered, boxed, or only partially seen, which lowers the bar for what needed to be physically created.💬 Join the DiscussionDo you think the plates were:Genuine ancient artifacts?A physical prop?Something more complicated?Drop your thoughts in the comments 👇Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. The Mormon Word of Wisdom: How the LDS Church Skirts History in Misleading "Now You Know" Video
In 2019, the LDS Church released a new video on the Word of Wisdom, also known as the Lord’s Law of Health. With over 200,000 views, the video attempts to explain why Latter-day Saints abstain from alcohol, tobacco, coffee, tea, and drugs—but it glosses over the messy historical reality. From its origins in 1833, the Word of Wisdom was shaped by the temperance movement, early 19th-century cultural habits, and practical concerns—like Emma Smith confronting Joseph Smith about tobacco in the School of the Prophets. Yet early church members, including Joseph Smith himself, continued to drink alcohol and smoke for decades. This Mormon News Roundup episode highlights how the 2019 video uses simplified imagery and cartoony narration to:Portray early leaders as polished and scholarlyPortray outsiders as bumbling or immoralAvoid explaining that the Word of Wisdom was not a commandment until the 1920sSkip over real historical issues, like cholera outbreaks, boiling water, and inconsistencies in “hot drinks” definitionsWe break down the historical context, the real social influences behind the Word of Wisdom, and why the Church continues to present a sanitized version of history—even in 2019.📌 Watch as we expose the gap between official LDS presentation and the historical record.Based on: https://www.ldsdiscussions.com/wowPlease consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. The Book of Mormon Gold Plates Problem: Breaking Down the LDS “Now You Know” Propoganda Video
In April 2020, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a “Now You Know” video explaining the gold plates—the foundation of the Book of Mormon. But how complete is that explanation? In this video, we walk through the Church’s presentation line by line, comparing it with historical sources, primary documents, and modern scholarship. What emerges is a pattern: simplified storytelling, selective framing, and major unanswered questions. We examine:The evolving accounts of Joseph Smith’s First VisionThe timeline inconsistencies surrounding Moroni’s visitThe physical plausibility of the gold plates (weight, size, transport)The seer stone in a hat vs traditional translation narrativeThe “caractors” document vs stylized “reformed Egyptian”The role (or lack thereof) of the plates during translationContradictions and complexities in the witness testimoniesThe absence of archaeological support for large metal recordsAnachronisms within the Book of Mormon itselfIf the gold plates were meant to serve as tangible evidence, why were they rarely used in the translation process—and why were they never made broadly available for examination? This video doesn’t just critique—it compares claims to evidence, and narrative to historical record.📚 Sources referenced include historical documents, early accounts, and the work of historians such as Dan Vogel. Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell. I Answered the Mormon Temple Recommend Questions Honestly | INSTANT Regret!
Today on The Mormon News Roundup, I’m doing something different.Instead of reacting to breaking news or the latest institutional scandal, I walk through the current temple recommend interview questions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—and I answer them honestly, exactly as they are asked today. If you don’t answer these questions “correctly,” you don’t enter the temple. No temple, no ordinances. No ordinances, no highest degree of heaven. These questions are framed as measures of worthiness, spirituality, and moral fitness—but embedded in them are deep assumptions about authority, obedience, guilt, sexuality, money, epistemology, and even thought itself.I spent decades answering these questions the “right” way. My livelihood once depended on it.Today, I answer them truthfully. This episode is not about mockery or personal grievance. It’s about examining whether these questions are coherent, ethical, evidence-based, or psychologically healthy. If truth matters, these questions deserve scrutiny—not automatic assent. We go through all 18 temple recommend questions, covering topics like:Faith vs. evidenceTestimony and emotional epistemologyProphetic authoritySexual shame and thought crimeTithing and institutional deceptionHonesty, obedience, and worthinessYou don’t need a recommend to be ethical. You don’t need priesthood keys to be decent. You don’t need secret rituals to be worthy. If you find this episode helpful, uncomfortable, or clarifying—good. That’s what honest inquiry does.☕ Yes, I drink coffee.📺 Like, subscribe, and follow for more Mormon News Roundup.✨ Always think celestial. Please consider making a donation by joining our Patreon https://www.patreon.com/MormonNewsRoundup Email: [email protected] Website: https://mormonnewsroundup.org/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mormonnewsroundup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mormon_news_roundup/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100093511869924 X: https://twitter.com/NewsMormon New episodes LIVE every Sunday and Monday nights at 9:30PM ESTPlease like and subscribe and hit the notifications bell.
