Napoleon Dynamite: 10 Obscure Facts That Change Everything | What If I Don’t Like It?
Ever wondered why Napoleon Dynamite feels so strangely specific — and why that awkwardness actually works? In this trivia segment from What If I Don’t Like It? (Episode 43), filmmaker Victoria Roccaforte and I break down 10 obscure behind-the-scenes facts about Napoleon Dynamite that reveal how carefully constructed this “random” movie really is.We get into:• Why Jon Heder drew all of Napoleon’s sketches himself• The deliberate choice behind that monotone delivery• How real Preston High students shaped the film’s texture• Why Pedro’s speech was simplified at the last minute• How silence in the edit became one of the movie’s sharpest comedic tools• And the subtle ending tweak that gives the story emotional staying powerWhat looks accidental is intentional. What feels awkward is engineered. And understanding the architecture behind the comedy makes the film even more fascinating — whether you love it or still don’t quite “get it.”🎧 Listen to the full episode for our complete conversation about why this indie breakout still divides audiences decades later.—#NapoleonDynamite #MovieTrivia #FilmTrivia #IndieFilm #CultMovies #FilmPodcast #MoviePodcast #WhatIfIDontLikeIt #FilmCommentary #JonHederTimestamps:00:00 – Exploring the Depths of Napoleon Dynamite00:33 – ONE: Napoleon’s drawings were Jon Heder’s own01:30 – TWO: The monotone voice was deliberate02:24 – THREE: Real Preston High students in the film03:18 – FOUR: The real origin of the tater tots04:04 – FIVE: Pedro’s speech was simplified at the last minute04:53 – SIX: The film changed real-world behavior05:41 – SEVEN: Silence engineered in post-production06:20 – EIGHT: Limited coverage shaped the aesthetic06:54 – NINE: Regional and cultural rhythm behind the humor07:30 – TEN: The ending was refined for emotional durability08:11 – Want to go deeper? Little Shop of Horrors with Horror Critic @Taylor Complains - Episode 39
Horror film reviewer Taylor Complains (@taylorcomplains) joins host Kt Baldassaro (@MovieRuntime) to dig into Frank Oz’s 1986 cult horror musical classic Little Shop of Horrors. Killer plants sing, Rick Moranis charms, and the bleak alternate ending is somehow more expensive than Aliens. Kt and Taylor dive into what happens when a horror fan with zero patience for musicals meets one of the campiest cult classics of the 1980s. From killer plants to killer performances, they debate whether Little Shop of Horrors deserves its legacy, or if it’s all just Muppet-fueled madness. We also dig into: 🎭 Frank Oz’s Muppet DNA and why his practical effects still hold up 40 years later 💀 That infamous alternate ending… the one test audiences couldn’t handle 🎥 Rick Moranis’s “lovable loser” energy and why it somehow works every time 🧵 Why horror and comedy blend perfectly, but musicals can drive even die-hard horror fans insane 🌆 The original 1960 version with Jack Nicholson, and how it evolved from B-movie to Broadway hit 😂 Taylor’s brutal honesty, his case for bleak endings, and why he rates this one a "2… maybe 2.5, but only because it eats everyone at the end.”Whether you’re a Little Shop devotee or a proud musical hater, this episode delivers sharp film analysis, chaotic humor, and a surprisingly heartfelt appreciation for practical effects and bad decisions.🔗 Follow Taylor Complains TikTok: @taylorcomplains YouTube: @taylorcomplains Instagram: @taylorcomplains🎧 Follow Kt Baldassaro (@MovieRuntime) Instagram & TikTok: @MovieRuntime Letterboxd: @MovieRuntime YouTube: @MovieRuntime#LittleShopOfHorrors #FrankOz #RickMoranis #HorrorMusical #FilmPodcast #CultCinema #MovieRuntime #WhatIfIDontLikeIt #80sMovies #PracticalEffects #SteveMartin #JackNicholson #PodcastInterview #FilmCritic #HorrorTikTok #TaylorComplains #HorrorCommunity #FilmAnalysis #ComedyPodcast #cultmovies Master Chronological List of all Films Mentioned in this EpisodeGo Ask Alice (1973)Little Shop of Horrors (1960)The Dark Crystal (1982)The Thing (1982)Gremlins (1984)Ghostbusters (1984)The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)The Fly (1986)Little Shop of Horrors (1986)Spaceballs (1987)Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)Arachnophobia (1990)Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)Pulp Fiction (1994)Natural Born Killers (1994)Vampires (1998)Ravenous (1999)Magnolia (1999)Boondock Saints (1999)Rush Hour (1998)Blade (1998)The South Park Movie (Bigger, Longer & Uncut) (1999)The Descent (2005)Brokeback Mountain (2005)There Will Be Blood (2007)[REC] (2007)No Country for Old Men (2007)Repo! Paprika with Aaron Wood - Episode 34
Paprika (2006) Is Better Than Inception?Talking Satoshi Kon, Dreams, and Fandoms with Aaron WoodThis week, we’re diving into a movie I love with someone I think you’re going to love too—illustrator, designer, and board game artist Aaron Wood. We’re talking Paprika (2006), Satoshi Kon’s visually wild, brain-bending anime that’s basically Inception before Inception—but weirder, and honestly, better.Aaron had never seen it before, so we use that as a jumping-off point to explore:The ethics of dream-sharingThe strange line between identity and avatars (online and in dreams)Why animation might be the only way to tell this kind of storyAaron’s work in fandom from the inside out—WPA-style fantasy posters, sci-fi tourism art, and board game design for games like Twilight ImperiumTopics we hit include:🎭 The uncanny valley vs. hand-drawn magic🎤 Why Vocaloids are both cool and unsettling📺 The live-action Paprika remake (we're already anxious)🌐 How fandoms, internet identities, and dreams blur together😱 That time Aaron’s parents betrayed him… with Return of the Jedi🎬 Why sometimes we just need a little nudge to finally watch a movieThis episode’s full of heart, nerdy insights, and plenty of sidetracks about art, animation, and how we experience stories.—Follow the host:Kt Baldassaro (MovieRuntime)TikTok: @movieruntimeInstagram: @movieruntimeLetterboxd: movieruntimeBluesky: movieruntime.bsky.socialFollow the guest:Aaron Wood – Illustrator, graphic designer, and board game artistEtsy: JustOneScarfInstagram: @aaronwooddesignsTikTok: @aaronwooddesignsTwitter/X: @justonescarf—🎧 Listen on your favorite platform:Spotify: tinyurl.com/mr8ct67cApple Podcasts: tinyurl.com/3rarkktxOther platforms: tinyurl.com/y43c2cc7

There Will Be Blood with Brett Kelley - Episode 20
In this episode of *What If I Don't Like It?*, I sit down with Brett Kelley—graphic designer, cinephile, and all-around fun guy—to dive deep into *There Will Be Blood*. Together, we dissect what makes this movie a gripping character study (spoiler: it's more than just milkshakes) and talk about why films set in historical contexts—and that are themselves “old”—can be tricky to pin down with meaning. We’ll also get into Brett’s current art projects and where you can stalk—I mean, follow—his creative journey on social media. Plus, we’ll touch on something fascinating: how aphantasia (the inability to visualize images) might impact the way some people enjoy or critique films. Jingle All the Way with Brandon White - Episode 17
This episode we have our first guest from the #Filmtok Community, Brandon White. For those unsure of what that means: I met Brandon through the film critic and reviewing community on TikTok under the hashtag #filmtok. When he first said that he had an aversion to the director, Brian Levant - I said “Who?” The director of The Flinstones in Viva Rock Vegas, and The Christmas Story 2 - both sequels, AND the director of a film he had not yet seen: Jingle All the Way. While I do not like Christmas movies, I did think that mixing that subject with tackling Arnold Schwarzenegger in comedies could lead to some very interesting conversations. We talk about the rating system for films in the US, the depiction of children in films vs reality, the difference between campy and corny, the joy of putting yourself out there as an actor/filmmaker, and so much more. I’m quite glad we took the chance on this strange little 1996 classic, and I hope you’ll join us for the deep dive into Christmas in July with: Jingle All the Way. Network with Conan Neutron - Episode 16
This episode we are joined again by a guest from a previous episode - Conan Neutron, who came on for our Valentine’s Day episode to talk about Moonstruck. Since he was willing to take a chance on a romcom, it felt only far for me to take a chance on his # 1 favourite film of all time: Network! Join us as we discuss this absolutely noteworthy film that seems to somehow not be on everyone’s radar- myself included! Even though it’s got ten oscar nominations, and four wins. Mind you, three films have received the most Academy Award nominations with 14 each: All About Eve (1950), La La Land (2016), and Titanic (1997). Titanic also won the most awards out of the three, with 11 wins, including Best Picture. Network also has TWO Oscar trivia notable wins: The first ever posthumously awarded Oscar win for Peter Finch (Best Actor), and the win with the shortest amount of screen time (5 mins, 40 seconds) for Beatrice Straight (Best Supporting Actress). Tampopo with Jacob Davison - Episode 15
This episode we discussed the 1985 Japanese Comedy/Western with writer/director Jacob Davison. You may know him from his short film work - I have spoken about his film, Ei8ht on my TikTok short film reviews - or from his two podcasts: Eye on Horror with iHorror.com and The Hallow-Rewind Podcast. While he never specifically avoided the film, Tampopo, he was never really drawn into seeing it. I’m so glad that he didn't because this allowed me to have a wonderful conversation with him about the role that food plays in this slice of life film that is full of whimsy, absurdity, sex, food, gangsters, truckers, fights, and so much more! Ice Pirates with Scott Tundermann - Episode 14
This episode we talk with our VERY FIRST ever guest, my husband, Scott Tundermann, about a film he’s been wanting me to see for a while, the 1984 Sci-Fi Comedy, Ice Pirates. He hasn’t seen it since he was a kid, but remembers really thinking it was funny and often wonders why no one else seems to know about it, or have heard of it. I keep confusing it with the 2005 Pirates, which is the highest budget porno made. The Emperor's New Groove with Arielle Faye-Foulds - Episode 13
This episode has been a long time in the making. Since the second episode when our most frequent guest to date and true friend of the show, Arielle Faye-Foulds came on and we discussed Bad Boys. During that conversation it came to light that I had not yet seen the 2000’s animated insanity, The Emperor’s New Groove. Normally, I’m pretty averse to Disney films, animated films for children, and David Spade, so I will admit that I was exceptionally hesitant to agree to see this one. Although once I found out that is was Disney’s last fully hand-drawn feature length film I will admit I was drawn in for the historicity . However, once Ari explained its heartwarming place in her family’s lexicon, I started to see the reasons why families will build memories around Disney films. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring with Jayare - Episode 12
Continuing our month of May with the other co-host of Opinions MAY Vary, we have Jayare on to discuss why he has not yet seen ANY of the Lord of the Ring Trilogy! Since it would be absurd to have him watch all three films and a BEAST of a discussion to fit into this show, we decided to have them watch the first film, Fellowship of the Ring. This way, if they enjoy it, they can continue to watch the series. The show focuses a lot on the idea of how to properly introduce a film, book, or any kind of media that you deeply enjoy to someone who may have missed out on it, without being so overbearing you wind up making them decide not to engage with it out of spite! We outline better methods for approaching this, and talk about times this both happened to us, and was done BY us! Jayare’s Letterboxd Top Four Films! HBO's Last of Us with Alex Squiers - Episode 11
In this episode we talk with another long time friend of mine, Alex Squiers. You've definitely heard me talk about him on this podcast before. He did the special effects for my film, Girl in the Basement, as well as a lot of the stuff on Jared Skolnick's early work in MA. He also co-hosted another LONG running (over ten years) podcast called Opinions May Vary. Since it's May, we're having him and then the other cohost of the show, Jayare, on this month for what I'm calling Opinions MAY Vary May. There has been an exceptionally long standing beef among our friend ground revolving around Alex's experience playing the **video game** Last of Us. He has such a uniquely negative experience - unlike the rest of us who adored it - that he simply couldn't contain his hatred, and it became a hilarious running joke. He loved to whip people up by reminding us of it as much as we loved to "poke the bear" back, so to say. When HBO came out with the show based on the game, we all loved it and wanted to shared this with Alex, but he was having NONE of that. So when it became known that I was doing a show that asked people to watch a MOVIE that they may have judged without watching, several people immediately asked if I would consider a television show episode with Alex and the HBO show. Knowing that it wouldn't be really a fair ask to having Alex watch the entire 9 + hours of the show, I thought, "Oh wait! There's that fantastic bottle episode where Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett play opposite." It's not heavily based on the events of the game, so it might just be a wonderful way to have Alex see the amazing storytelling and writing that the show has to offer. Despite being a bit wary to ask, as this was a big as in my opinion, Alex was very affable and eager to help be a guest on this show since I'd been on OMV several times in the past. Listen in as things in my life come full circle, and see if we were able to perhaps change Alex's mind on a long hated subject! Spaceman with Arielle Faye-Foulds and Sarah Frieser - Episode 10
One of the very first actors that gets brought up when I talk about the concept of this podcast is Adam Sandler. He is incredibly divisive. One group of people will like him for his comedy but not his dramatic roles, and the other group will like him and hate him for exactly the opposite reasons. He truly seems to be an actor who can't quite break this cycle. So when Spaceman (2024) came out on Netflix, and I saw that, yet again, Sandler is attempting to expand his capacity as a dramatic actor by taking bigger swings. As a result I have since found myself a bit of a convert on his behalf and wanted very much to discuss this particular film with someone. Well boy did I luck out in finding our first ever DUO of guests in long time friends, Arielle Faye-Foulds and Sarah Frieser! While they are both exceptionally thoughtful and insightful film goers, they are also a wonderful duo to listen to. Their rapport is so welcoming and witty that it's akin to sitting in your favourite chair with a delicious warm drink. (You may also recognize Ari from Episode Two - Bad Boys.) This is why I'm so excited to share them both with you as we attempt to enter the SADlerverse. (The sad movies of Adam Sandler). She also took a huge risk with us and watched a violent and graphic movie about cannibalism despite not really enjoying the horror genre or Eli Roth as a director. The Goonies with Jared Skolnick - Episode Eight
This episode we have on writer, director, editor, and cinematographer and personal friend, Jared Skolnick. Jared and I have worked on several projects over the years including my first script, Girl in the Basement. He’s an incredibly astute filmmaker with a lot of experience watching and talking about films. If you know one thing about Jared it’s his love for Steven Spielberg, but when I first started talking to Jared he mentioned having never seen Goonies (1985)! He’s exactly the right age to have seen it as a child, but somehow missed out. While Spielberg didn’t directly direct Goonies, he did have an exceptionally large influence on it- even stepping in directing a few of the scenes for Richard Donner. Will we find a rare deviation from Jared’s love, or will we help him get over the trepidation that there could be something in his oeuvre that he might not like? Moonstruck with Conan Neutron - Episode Six
This episode is a very special Valentine’s Day episode that’s a day early! The theme is, of course, Romantic Comedies, and we have an extra special guest joining us to discuss their trepidation on the genre: Conan Neutron! You may know Conan from his work as a musician and his band, Conan Neutron & the Secret Friends as well as his music-based podcast Protonic Reversal, OR his work as a host on Movie Night Extravaganza. However you know him, this episode if EXTRA LONG because we has such a fun and fruitful discussion on why we *both* aren’t too keen on romcoms. I, Tonya with Jesse Sterling Harrison of Mystic Warrior - Episode Five
It's a new month and that means a new theme! This February we're talking to musicians about film genres that they typically don't like, and trying to find a film that might be an exception for them. Our first guest is Jesse Sterling Harrison of the band Mystic Warrior. They have a brand new album titled, Animal Rites, that has JUST DEBUTED TODAY! Clips of three songs off the album - Mr. Grey, Church of Spiders, and Orcas Biting the (Richards) off Our Floating Idols - are featured throughout this episode so you can get a taste of what to expect. To get a copy of this album/ listen to more of it, visit: https://mysticwarrior1.bandcamp.com/album/animal-rites To find out more about the band and tour dates/shows, visit: Mystic Warrior Music We're talking to Jesse about his dislike of the genre: Biopics, and I thought it would be a very good time to take a look at a Biopic starring Margot Robbie! Many people are divided by her snub for Best Actress in Barbie at this years Oscars, with a contingent claiming she can't really act. To them I give this film as well. Make sure to double check your laces, and let's get on the ice for this one! ________________________________________ Additional Show Links: @MovieRuntime on TikTok @WhatIfIDontLikeIt on Instagram Kt Baldassaro on Letterboxd Conan Neutron and the Secret Friends Conan Neutron's Protonic Reversal Caterwaul Music Festival - LINE UP Movie Night Extravaganza

Raiders of the Lost Ark with Rocky Calsetta - Episode Four
Welcome back! In our fourth episode we’re talking about a film that is near and dear to my childhood, and many other Americans: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Yes, I did find an adult who hasn’t seen this film! I’m not going to act so surprised as everyone was pretty incredulous about me and the Wizard of Oz. Still, much like that experience- I had not seen the film because I’d seen so many clips and references that at this point in my life I had felt like I’d basically seen the film. It wasn’t out of any perceived hatred or even really thinking that I wouldn’t like it. So when my friend Rocky Calsetta who has experience working on films - he’s done FX and makeup - had not seen this film I thought it would pair well with our other film this month which was the Wizard of Oz. Listen in to see how it went and if he wound up enjoying the film! Answers to questions in the episode: Yes, it was Ray Harryhausen. And the Dennis Hopper film Rocky was thinking of was the 1990 film, Flashback. The Wizard of Oz with Forrest Miller - Episode Three
This episode is going to be a little bit of a format break- which is hilarious because this is episode three so our format is still developing! Nonetheless, this week is a kind of a “pre-show teaser” for tomorrow night’s (1/2/24) LIVE Movie Night Extravaganza. For those of you who don’t know, Movie Night Extravaganza is a live podcast on Youtube, that talks about movies etc weekly. I’m a frequent guest - so I’m definitely biased and love the show and the crew over there! They found out that despite being a “normal” human adult, I have not seen in its entirety the American film classic, The Wizard of Oz. Since they are all big fans of the movie, and have seen it as children, they were curious to see how it is to watch this as an adult without any real “nostalgia” for the film. Since I’m secretly unsure I’ll like the film and host a podcast called “What If I Don’t Like It? I was curious to explore the concept of possibly disliking a film that all your friends REALLY like! 😅 Forrest Miller, co-host and co-creator of Movie Night Extravaganza joins me to discuss his love of the film, and to help put it in the context of when it came out and why it’s an important/influential film that is worth taking a gamble on and watching, even if I’m not very “young at heart.” However, unlike previous episodes this is a CROSSOVER! To find out if I DID like the film - or didn’t - you’re going to have to tune in to Movie Night Extravaganza’s first episode of the year - 1/2/24 (see links below) either LIVE on Youtube, or streaming afterwards on multiple platforms. Bad Boys with Arielle Faye-Foulds: Episode Two
TL/DR: This week we discuss the 90s action classic Bad Boys directed by Michael Bay. The guest, making her podcast debut, is the fabulous Arielle Faye-Foulds. ---------------------------------------------------- This episode is about a movie and a director that aren’t considered “high cinema.” I’m of course talking about Bad Boys and Michael Bay. This is continuing the December theme of Mikes you might not Likes. In a change from our pilot episode, both myself and the guest will be experiencing this film for the first time, as we BOTH think we might not like it, but also think that we could be wrong here. I mean, the idea of a film that is not challenging mentally, has a lot of visually entertaining effects and explosions, maybe there IS something here to like! And of course, like it or not, the film itself is still influential to the genre, while also launching the career of Michael Bay. He would go on to do- the Transformers franchise, or course, but also Armageddon, and The Rock. Not to mention the video for I would do Anything for Love by Meatloaf! Our zeitgeist has been for better or worse, irrevocably touched by his existence and this is the moment he steps down from the Mount Sinai with the tablets… ok that’s too much, I’m sorry, I’m just still thinking about the Ark of the Covenant Wikipedia for our upcoming Raiders episode in January. -------------------------------------------------- Link to Bad Boys Bingo cards: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554132628773 Light Up and Live Patches: https://themadhatterco.net/collections/comedy/products/vintage-31 Find us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whatifidontlikeitpodcast/?hl=en -------------------------------------------------- Tune into Movie Night Extravaganza for Ex Machina episode with guests, Kt Baldassaro and Renee Ruin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6CQ9XQo4Js&ab_channel=MovieNightExtravaganza

So I Married an Axe Murderer with Scott Tundermann - Pilot Episode
What If I Don't Like It? is a bimonthly podcast with host Kt Baldassaro (@LittleDeadlyCreature) where we ask guests to watch a movie they decided theyh wouldn't like but have never seen. We aim to shed light on possible biases and maybe change their mind! In this, the pilot episode for the series, I sit down with my dearest test subject… my husband, Scott Tundermann. He has long said to me that he doesn’t like Mike Myers films, and while I understood where he was coming from- I have always been a fan of the film So I Married an Axe Murderer since I was a young kid. My sister and I would quote the lines at each other, often just screaming “MOVE HEEED” , but would it hold up? Join me in our first episode where we will first discuss the film, put it in context of when it came out, and get an idea about why Scott thinks he might not like this film. Then we’ll break and watch the film. After which we will return to see if Scott came around to enjoying the flavour Mike Myers adds to something, or if I am high on the nostalgia of a 90s film from my youth? ----------------------------------------------- New episodes come out on the 1st and the 15th of each month!
