2x2x2 (vocal version)
2x2 is, in itself, a riddle. Two performers play a middle C, over and over, on the instrument of their own choice. The instrumental sound is extended through the use of live electronics, exploring repetition, variation, texture, counterpoint. Originally commissioned by Christian Tscherning (trombone) and Jason Alder (bass clarinet), the piece has since been performed in a number of different instrument combinations since its 2020 premiere. Always new, yet always recognizable. To honor its many sides, I decided to present it in a studio recording with not one but two different versions, back-to-back. The 2x versions included in this release are especially contrasting. They invite us to explore the inherent dichotomy of the piece. Something akin to a developed picture and its negative. There is no need to choose a side. release date: May 31, 2024 music by Xavier Bonfill (vocal version) performed by Fei Nie & Xavier Bonfill (bell plate version) performed by Marta Soggetti & Lorenzo Colombo programming, producer, recording & mixing: Xavier Bonfill mastering: Mikael Tobias artwork: Antonio Martinez With kind support from KODAs Cultural Funds & DMF / Gramex Collective Funds

three_four_maybe III (4.1271)
DLB2305 three_four_maybe (composed 2020-21, recorded 2023) for 3 musicians: midi controllers, prepared piano, 24 solenoids, 3 LED panels When I was a child, before I started writing my own music, I used to write short stories. My poor handwriting made it difficult for others to read, and we didn’t have a computer at home at the time. So my parents got me a typewriter for my birthday. I loved it so much. Ideas would just flow, from my mind, into printed paper. What I liked the most about the typewriter was the sound that it made. And how each word would become music as it got typed. It was an electric typewriter, so there was a little bit of delay between my key presses and the actual sound. I learnt how to work around it and I would type faster or slower in order to queue up characters and hear certain rhythms I had in my head. So that electric typewriter was, in a way, my first sequencer. I see the grand piano in “three_four_maybe” a bit like a giant typewriter that makes the most amazing sounds. encore
DLB2304 "I wrote "entrée / en mouvement / encore" back in 2016-17. The title reflects the starting idea for the piece, which was to reflect on the concert situation as some sort of ritual that has its entrance, which later generates movement and which keeps on moving after this energy has been thrown into the room. A ritual consisting on both artists and audience, unable to exist without each other. This idea led me to think about the popular thought experiment "if a tree falls in the forest..." which later led to reading George Berkeley's "A Treatise Concerning The Principles of Human Knowledge" (1710) to whom the thought is commonly (mis)attributed to. The three movements are composed from extracts from the book, translated into morse code and used as musical material. This would become my first "text based" piece, a technique that would evolve in some of my later works such as "one for two" (2018) "YES FOR NO" (2020) and "three_four_maybe" (2021)." Digital liner notes: haknam.dk/twp.html "During the Christmas holidays in 2019, I went on a trip to China with Fei, my life partner. We visited her hometown Beihai and its surroundings in the Guanxi province, as well as Shanghai. I brought a sound recorder with me and did some field recordings during the trip. I decided I would make a piece based on those field recordings, where the music is built upon the original sound instead of silence. Like painting on top of an existing picture. These recordings had become precious memories for me and when I shared them with my friends from haknam, they became like little stories. I wanted them to tell those stories back at me with their instruments, in guided semi-improvised sessions. My composition process would be then to rearrange and build upon their sounds in a way I would see fit. And then, finally, each musician would retranscribe the final piece in their own way in a shared graphical score. I wanted it to feel like everything should come from each musician’s own voice. You cannot tell someone else’s story. When you do, it’s already your own." 20200516_mikrofoodie
This is some sort of "official bootleg" from a live-streaming event on Instagram. Mikrofoodie is a special performance created in collaboration with Fei Nie and Lorenzo Colombo. Vaguely inspired in Karlheinz Stockhausen's Mikrophonie and meant as a celebration of friendship and being together in these strange times, the piece consists on a "chef" (Fei Nie) making dinner, a microphonist (Lorenzo Colombo) capturing the sounds and an electronic musician (Xavier Bonfill) processing and manipulating the sounds in real-time. The recording is presented in an edited version (30 minutes instead of 44 in the original performance) focused on the listening experience. Some headphone candy for your hungry ears. credits released May 18, 2020 Recorded live at home, in the kitchen, on an Instagram Live streaming event on May, the 16th, 2020, 19h (CET). Mixed & mastered from a Zoom H6 recording. Fei Nie: chef Lorenzo Colombo: microphonist Xavier Bonfill: electronics

in c minor
16 in c minor I never totally understood the attraction towards the c minor key in a lot of electronic music. But hey, I fall for that too sometimes. Just a Mutable Instruments Rings setting the tone for a party in a distopian future. A happy ending? --- about the album: Denmark, like most european countries, is currently on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. All this time indoors brought me to check into some archive recordings. Mostly, live-recordings and improvisations from my home studio in Refshaleøen, Copenhagen. The recordings span from early 2018 until a few days ago and most of them were never meant to be "pieces" or "tracks". Yet there is something appealing about them, just because of that. Here, you will find some possible ideas for future tracks, "live-remixes" of previously released tracks, improvisations and some bleep bloop just-testing stuff. Listening back to all this music, I can't honestly remember how I did half of it. It almost feels like someone else's music. I like that. I hope you like it too. credits released March 20, 2020 Composed, performed, recorded, mixed and mastered by Xavier Bonfill between January 2018 and March 2020. Instruments: assorted Eurorack Synth modules, Teenage Engineering Op1 & PO32, voice, maybe something else that was lying around.

14 beskidt og roligt The title means “dirty and quiet” in Danish (and it is a not-so-smart word play with the expression “stille og roligt”). piano chords
13 piano chords I wrote “YES FOR NO” for 3 soloists, symphony orchestra, electronics and light; all based on some strummed piano chords (playing inside the instrument) and the polyrhythms inside those chord frequencies. still there? (early demo)
10 still there? (early demo) February 2018: I was biking on my way back home passing the harbour by Refshalevej. There was snow all around. I stopped by, took the op-1 out and recorded the vocals for this song. I still love pop songs. This one might be rearranged into something bigger at some point. choir music
9 choir music If this were a tape, the “B-side” of the record would start with this track. A little choir music to start things up again. It is early in the morning and the tape speed is a bit wobbly, so the singers don’t sound much in tune. sketch #2 (live Remix)
8 sketch #2 (live remix) Another live remix from the “travel light” EP (2018). Some samples from the original track are pitched down rather extremely and played back from the STS (Stereo Triggered Sample) module by 4ms. The two independent samplers trigger each other automatically after the current sample has finished playing.. so altering the sample length of any of them causes the tempo to shake a little bit. --- about the album: Denmark, like most european countries, is currently on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instruments: assorted Eurorack Synth modules, Teenage Engineering Op1 & PO32, voice, maybe something else that was lying around.

sweep dreams
6 sweep dreams I honestly don’t remember where I got that sound from. But you know: sweep dreams are made of this, who am I to disagree? --- about the album: Denmark, like most european countries, is currently on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. All this time indoors brought me to check into some archive recordings. Mostly, live-recordings and improvisations from my home studio in Refshaleøen, Copenhagen. The recordings span from early 2018 until a few days ago and most of them were never meant to be "pieces" or "tracks". Yet there is something appealing about them, just because of that. Here, you will find some possible ideas for future tracks, "live-remixes" of previously released tracks, improvisations and some bleep bloop just-testing stuff. eat your pills
5 eat your pills Please ignore the title, is the first thing that came into my mind. This is just an op1 beat you can dance to. Now: start going around in circles in that little room where you have been sitting for these last couple weeks. You are welcome to scream your lungs out or just randomly hit on the walls. You can have it. --- about the album: Denmark, like most european countries, is currently on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. #32_mindf***_b
soundcloud Refshaleøen Tapes vol. I -> out on Bandcamp 3 #32_mindf***_b A wonky beat with some eurorack stuff and a Teenage Engineering PO-32. The PO-32 is a little drum machine that plays 16-step patterns. It is cool but everything ends up being music in 4/4. I found out that if I triggered it manually (from the modular) then I could f*** up with its timing. That made it much more fun. --- about the album: Denmark, like most european countries, is currently on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. four_part_drone
Refshaleøen Tapes vol. I -> out on Bandcamp 2 four_part_drone This is a 10+ minute drone, perfect for staring at the walls. It features the Mutable Instruments Tides module: here used as an oscillator with 4 different variations, that can be multiples or subdivisions of its original frequency, creating beautiful chords (in just intonation) that correspond to polyrhythms. This was a big inspiration for me when I was writing YES FOR NO for symphony orchestra and 3 soloists. --- about the album: Denmark, like most european countries, is currently on lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. heptagon II
Heptagon is a short electronic piece, in two movements, that is inspired in Else Marie Pade's tape music piece "syv cirkler" from 1958. It was premiered in a concert by the group Neko3 organised by "Moderne Mandag". All sounds were generated with a Make Noise "0Coast" semi-modular analog synth (with some other eurorack modules modulating it) and a Music Thing "Spring Reverb". This is an UHJ stereo mix, which is a reduction from the original surround ambisonic mix. credits released February 22, 2019 composed, produced, performed, mixed, mastered and illustrated by Xavier Bonfill, Copenhagen, January 2019. Special thanks to: Jens Rossel (Moderne Mandag), Neko3, Tony Martínez
