When Chloe’s song “Have Mercy” dropped, I, together with millions of people, was left speechless. The vocals, the beats, and the cinematography that went into the official music video were nothing short of flawless. I legit had that song on repeat for months on end, to the point where I got tired of listening to it. By that time, I had memorized the lyrics, word for word. It sent me into stalker mode; I researched their background and their journey into both the music and film industries. They both deserve every accolade. Chloe went on to release even more masterpieces, all phenomenal. And then Halle released the viral song “Angel.” The first time I listened to that piece, I was stunned. Clearly she invested a whole lot into it emotionally. And there I was thinking Chloe was individually great, and Halle was an expert. The vocal range was insane. Man, that song spoke to my soul, in a language I had never heard before yet understood perfectly. That song made me fall even deeper in love with those sisters. They both possess amazing singing talents. I’m pretty sure they worked to get to where they are now vocally because they started singing at a very young age. Anyways, this is all to say that I am a huge fan of the Bailey sisters; I’ve sung some of their songs in the past and hope to do more. My presentation today is a tribute to them, Halle especially. I had my YouTube playlist going, listening to random songs on shuffle. I was actually frying up some plantains when this song came on—Beautiful Things by Benson Boone. It wasn’t new to me, like I said in the video; the song is a famous one. It was trending all over YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and the like. For some reason, probably because of the song mixed with the delicious aroma of fried plantain in the air, I was drawn to the melody of the song like never before. It felt like it was my first time listening to it. As though a third eye opened up, and suddenly I could assimilate the lyrics, and they resonated with me. In that moment, I decided I was going to make my own rendition of it. Given the week’s theme being Vacation, I felt it fit perfectly because by merely listening to it, it feels like you are on a temporary vacation. The music transports you into another dimension. I’ll admit, this theme was quite tricky to wrap a song around. After much research and soul searching, I chose the song “The night we met” sang by Lord Huron. Something about that song got me in my feeling. I loved the harmony, the deep and baritone of the singer. It’s definitely a song that gets you in the reflective spirit. After listening to it the first time, I played again, and again, and again, and eventually left on repeat. It was quite the task looking for a song that fit the theme, especially after everyone already took monopoly of The titanic song😅. I'm pretty sure @verbal-d has heard enough renditions to last him a year. I mean I'm sure just like me, everyone tried their best to make the most of what they found. For this week, I choose the song Fire and the Flood by Vance Joy. It was featured in the animated movie Storks which debuted back in 2016. An amazing movie that portrayed a baby making and delivery system that went extinct. But through the letter of a young kid who wanted a younger brother so badly, and some unfortunate but lucky circumstances, the company started right back. And his little sibling was eventually delivered to him. You should definitely watch it, it's absolutely worth the 2 hours. You might even shed a few tears. For this week's theme being "Break away', I decided to present a song that has been on my heart for the last couple of weeks. "Somewhere Only We Know" sung by Keane. The lyrics tell a story of two lovers propelling each other to find their way back to a place where they once knew. In the first verse, it portrays one of them walking across what I would presume to be a forest, or a field. He describes it as an empty land, apparently to him, every step into this land feels familiar, every brush against the leaves and the earth beneath his feet all feel like home to him. I resonated with this concept because when I feel overwhelmed, and taking a break sounds like a great idea, I also tend to seek solace in nature. And so even if I'm walking a path for the first time, it still would feel familiar. So "breaking away", for me, involves nature and light. That is why I chose this particular song. Some people chose that song too. I decided to exhaust every other option before resorting to it, though. Designed My image Using Canva While doing some research, I came across Harry Style’s “Sign of the Times.”. Let me tell you, that song definitely evokes emotions from people. I fell into a mini trance, and I immersed myself fully into it, without having to try. It’s a pity I couldn’t learn to get the lyrics to stick in my head. I kept making mistakes, so I eventually gave up after enough tries. I proceeded to check one of my old playlists and then finally found my star song; “Jailer” by ASA. It was a no brainer, I knew the lyrics, plus I have an extremely long relationship with the song. I’m talking about primary school, decades ago. I remember listening to ASA back then, her lyrics are usually so vivid and raw that you can’t help but visualize them. She is so gifted. From collaborations to songs he produced, I loved every single one. It was hard to pick one to that I loved because they all sounded so good, but choosing "Pick me up" was an easy decision. It was the one with the least sophistocated vocals, so it was easy for me to hop onto it. Trying out the songs, though, made me develop a new found appreciation for professional musicians. When I read the announcement post and understood the assignment, it was difficult choosing one particular song to settle on. Designed Using Canva Right off the bat, I knew whatever I chose was going to be an animation. The first animated movie that came to mind was my favorite of all time, “Storks”. I’m not sure if it’s a Disney movie but it was released several years ago. I tried looking for reenact-able tracks in it, but I couldn’t find one. So I checked out “Encanto”; so many excellent and engaging tracks right here. But none of the pitches matched mine. I then checked “Moana”, magnificent songs but very hard to cover because there were a lot of voices and singers in the song. I think I checked out “Coco” as well, the song was too short. I finally browsed through “The Little Mermaid”. Technically, the most recent edition wasn’t an animation but I absolutely loved the song, Halle did a phenomenal job. And since she is someone I look up to in the music industry, I decided to try out this piece. It definitely wasn’t easy, but I came up with this as the result. I sincerely hope you enjoy the cover. When I opened up the post, I saw that the theme was “Passion”. Now I was a little bit confused and yet excited to participate. Designed Using Canva I was confused because as the hair dresser weaved my hair, it seemed impossible to come up with a song for it. But as I proceeded to scroll through instagram, one of my favorite songs came up. A song I’d been dying to perform for Hive Open Mic, yet there never seemed to be a perfect time for it. I celebrated in excitement, and decided to learn the song for the next four days. Today I finally performed it and boy am I elated that I get to share it with you gifted singers and musicians on our beloved platform.
