António Manuel Pires Cabral nasceu em Chacim, Macedo de Cavaleiros, em 1941. Foi lá que fez a instrução primária, para depois frequentar em Coimbra o curso complementar dos liceus e, de seguida, a Faculdade de Letras, onde se licenciou em Filologia Germânica. Foi professor em Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança, Porto, Torre de Moncorvo, mas viria a mudar-se para Vila Real depois da revolução de 1974, e foi essa a cidade onde ficou até hoje, e onde estamos hoje. Fala de Vila Real de Trás os Montes como a terra a quem deve tudo, e também, talvez a poesia que vem escrevendo, desde que publicou o primeiro livro quando tinha 33 anos. Além do ensino, A. M. Pires Cabral, nome usado para assinar os livros, trabalhou no Pelouro da Cultura de Vila Real e no Grémio Literário da mesma cidade. A par destas atividades, escreveu e publicou muitos livros de poesia, romance, conto e teatro, e foi responsável por um dicionário de regionalismos de trás os montes e alto douro, um projeto que leva muitos anos de trabalho e que o enche de orgulho. Além dos muitos prémios literários, do seu percurso destaca-se também a organização das Jornadas Camilianas. Disse-me, numa ocasião em que conversámos há uns anos, que a poesia serve para apaziguar sem anestesiar.
