Francisco José Viegas nasceu em 1962 numa aldeia chamada Pocinho, em Vila Nova de Foz Coa. Aos 8 anos mudou-se para Chaves para acompanhar os pais, professores primários, colocados nessa cidade. Da adolescência sabemos pouco, à excepção do desejo de vir a ser cantor. Licenciado em Línguas e Literaturas Modernas, variante de Estudos Portugueses, pela Universidade Nova de Lisboa, iniciou cedo a dedicação ao jornalismo. Passou pelo Jornal das Letras, Expresso, Semanário, O Jornal, O Se7e, Diário de Notícias, O Independente, Visão, Correio da Manhã, Volta ao Mundo, Record, Oceanos, de que foi editor, Grande Reportagem, de que foi director e Revista Ler, que ainda hoje dirige. Assinou a autoria de vários projectos jornalísticos também na rádio e na televisão, privilegiando o foco no livro e a literatura. Professor, jornalista e editor, actualmente à frente da chancela Quetzal, foi ainda director da Casa Fernando Pessoa de 2006 a 2008, e Secretário de Estado da Cultura, Junho de 2011 a Outubro de 2012. A somar a este vasto currículo há os livros policiais e Jaime Ramos, a personagem ficcional de quem não podemos deixar de falar quando falamos de Francisco José Viegas -  será o inspector da secção de homicídios da polícia judiciária do Porto mais conhecido da literatura portuguesa. Mas Francisco José Viegas não gosta só de ler e de escrever romances policiais, a poesia é outra constante na sua vida de leitor e de autor.
