Joana Gama nasceu em Braga, em 1983. Estudou no Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Braga, para onde entrou com 5 anos; no Royal Academy of Music, em Londres; e na Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. Em 2010 concluiu o mestrado em Interpretação na Universidade de Évora onde defendeu, em 2017, a tese de doutoramento "Estudos Interpretativos sobre música portuguesa contemporânea para piano: o caso particular da música evocativa de elementos culturais portugueses". Tem um enorme fraquinho por Erik Satie - além de recitais dedicados ao compositor e pianista francês, dedicou-lhe também mais do que um disco, e teve ainda a ideia de criar um recital para crianças com obras de Satie comentadas chamado "Eu Gosto Muito do Senhor Satie". Além de tocar a solo e sobretudo como intérprete, também compõe e integra projectos musicais com outros músicos, como por exemplo o duo com Luís Fernandes.
