Joel Neto nasceu na ilha Terceira, nos Açores, e mudou-se para Lisboa aos 18 anos, para estudar Relações Internacionais no Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Políticas. Foi jornalista, repórter, editor, e chefe de redacção em vários jornais e revistas, mas em 2012 regressou à ilha natal, ao lugar de Dois Caminhos na freguesia de Terra Chã, para se dedicar à literatura. A ideia era ficar 4 ou 5 anos, mas não saiu mais. Se olharmos para os livros publicados desde então assim como o reconhecimento que a crítica lhes vem dando, podemos dizer que a aposta foi bem-sucedida. Esta propensão para a escrita materializou-se, então, nos livros publicados, mas já o acompanha desde cedo. Quando chegou ao jornal Record, com apenas 21 anos, levou para a mesa de trabalho da redacção o dicionário de sinónimos, gesto que levou o editor do jornal a comentar “lá me saiu mais um príncipe da escrita”. Príncipe da Escrita, explicou Joel Neto numa crónica publicada no Diário de Notícias "era como alguns jornalistas da velha guarda chamavam, não aos tipos que sabiam escrever, mas aos que tinham a mania que sabiam escrever. Ali ninguém sabia escrever: quando muito, tinha a mania.” Diz que um escritor é um solitário e, talvez por isso, tenha encontrado o abrigo certo para a escrita no lugar da Ilha Terceira onde escolheu viver. Há a natureza, ali no jardim de casa e em tantos outros caminhos da Ilha, os animais do campo e os domésticos (Joel Neto tem 2 cães), os vizinhos “de modos simples e vocação filosófica”, a expressão é sua, e ainda, outra expressão sua: a “rotina dos silêncios”.
