Nicolau Santos nasceu em Luanda em 1954, cidade angolana onde cresceu e fez o secundário todo. Veio para Portugal em 1975, e só regressaria ao país de origem em trabalho. Estudou economia. Foi jornalista no Jornal de Notícias, trabalhou para a ANOP (a antecessora do que se veio a tornar a Agência Lusa), foi director do Diário Económico e do Semanário Económico, dirigiu o Público, e durante cerca de 20 anos director-adjunto do Expresso, 13 dos quais co-apresentou o programa ‘Expresso da Meia-Noite’ na SIC Notícias. Assina comentário económico na Antena 1, e é actualmente Presidente do Conselho de Administração da Agência LUSA. Para o citar, no que diz respeito a estas funções que agora ocupa, “está presidente do conselho de administração” mas é jornalista, é assim que se define sempre. Escreve poesia desde os 18 anos. Quem o lia no semanário Expresso sabe que apesar de escrever sobre economia todas as semanas trazia um poema aos leitores. Actualmente prefere dizer poesia acompanhado por uma banda de jazz, actividade que mantém regularmente a par da actividade principal.
