How can we revamp asylum policies to ensure that a humanitarian approach guides US practices toward asylum seekers?

The right to seek asylum is protected under US federal law and the right to seek safety from persecution is backed by international law. Despite this, as immigrants and asylum seekers cross into the United States along the US-Mexico border, Congressional Representatives are negotiating changes to the US asylum system to slow the number of migrants into the US. In this episode, we discuss the impact of various proposals and how the US asylum system could be revamped to ensure that a humanitarian approach guides changes to this system.

From Here to Now From Here to Now aims to shed light on the many confusing, complex processes that are a part of the journey of immigrating to America, but we also hope to showcase the personal stories that emerge from such narratives. Where there are successful tales of obtaining H1B visas and receiving long-awaited green cards, there are also stories of hardship, struggle, and the resulting resilience and determination that arise. Where there is toil and strife, diligence and perseverance, there are also a multitude of other individuals who have experienced the same, and yet lived out their lives as immigrants in a completely different manner. Altogether, we hope to craft a well-rounded portrait of what it’s like to come to America and find yourself––slowly but surely––defining what it means to be American in your own right. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Music Used: 1) For Mimi by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creat "Belonging & Beyond" Gayane Kulikyan, MA These podcast series are devoted to immigrant and refugee women, feminine spirituality and healing, to help them heal and create fulfilling lives. To learn more about Gayane's coaching and healing work, please visit: https://concordinlove.com/. My Ántonia by Willa Cather (1873 - 1947) LibriVox My Ántonia tells the stories of several immigrant families who move out to rural Nebraska to start new lives in America, with a particular focus on a Bohemian family, the Shimerdas, whose eldest daughter is named Ántonia. The book’s narrator, Jim Burden, arrives in the fictional town of Black Hawk, Nebraska, on the same train as the Shimerdas, as he goes to live with his grandparents after his parents have died. Jim develops strong feelings for Ántonia, something between a crush and a filial bond, and the reader views Ántonia’s life, including its attendant struggles and triumphs, through that lens.
