from Possibilities with Monique de Maio · host Monique de Maio

Ana Fabiano, author of a comprehensive book on Rioja, discusses the importance of preserving authentic wine places of origin and the culture and heritage of Rioja. She emphasizes the transparency and authenticity of Rioja wines and the dedication of the winemakers who have been producing wines for generations. Ana also highlights the significance of understanding what we consume and the quality control standards in Rioja. She compares Rioja wines to those from Tuscany and Bordeaux, and explains how the Tempranillo grape can produce young, semi-aged, and long-term aged wines. Ana advocates for the conservation of indigenous grape varieties and the importance of seasonality and authenticity in food and wine. In this conversation, Ana and Monique discuss various topics related to wine, specifically focusing on the Rioja region. They touch on the influence of European culture on wine consumption, the presence of women in the wine industry, the importance of understanding wine terminology and authenticity, and the changing trends in wine consumption in the United States. They also discuss the use of additives and preservatives in wine and the significance of reading labels and understanding the point of origin. 00:00 Introduction to Ana Fabiano and her expertise in Rioja 02:45 The Importance of Authentic Wine Places of Origin 03:06 Transparency and Authenticity in Rioja Wines 05:40 Understanding Quality Control in Wine 08:01 The Versatility of the Tempranillo Grape 11:49 Conserving Indigenous Grape Varieties 13:06 The Importance of Seasonality and Authenticity 23:00 Women in the Wine Industry: The Case of Rioja 29:22 Understanding Wine Terminology and Authenticity 31:23 The Impact of Additives and Preservatives in Wine 36:34 Changing Trends in Wine Consumption in the United States 40:31 Living in the Present: Lessons from Spanish Culture Ana has written the most comprehensive book about Rioja to date, having earned a Mastery Certification in the Castilian language, a credential that allowed her to research and write the award winning book, The Wine Region of Rioja.
