Young People in Recovery – Chris’s story

from Hooked - An LGBTIQA+ Podcast on Addiction

Chris is our guest on Hooked , sharing his perspective on the experience of entering recovery at a young age. After 9 years of alcoholism, Chris chose sobriety at aged 24. He sought support from AA, and in particular specialist LGBT AA groups. What are the challenges of giving up alcohol and drugs when they are a regular part of your social scene? How do you identify the strong people who will support you? Chris believes becoming sober is the best thing he’s ever done – even though it didn’t always feel like that when he started. In the news, we review the latest update on the proposed poppers ban. We ponder how we feel about pill-testing at festivals after the success of the pill-testing trial at Canberra’s Groovin the Moove. And we acknowledge the ongoing campaign by Dubbo residents for a local drug rehab facility. Our addiction of the week is inhalants. Queerspace and Thorne Harbour Health are two good starting points if you are concerned that sniffing or huffing is becoming a problem for you.
