Today, we're diving into the fascinating history of ADHD—how we came to understand it, the minds behind its discovery, and how we've treated it over the years. Let's go! 1798: Scottish physician Sir Alexander Crichton describes "mental restlessness," the earliest documentation of what we now recognize as ADHD. 1845: Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann's children's book introduces "Fidgety Phil," an early literary depiction of ADHD-like behavior. 1930s: Dr. Charles Bradley's experiments with Benzedrine reveal the effectiveness of stimulants in treating ADHD. 1980s: Dr. Virginia Douglas's research helps establish ADHD as a legitimate diagnosis, leading to its inclusion in the DSM-III. The rise of Ritalin in the 1950s and Adderall in the 1990s revolutionizes ADHD treatment. Exploration of non-stimulant medications and behavioral therapies that offer diverse treatment options today. Did you know caffeine was one of the earliest treatments for ADHD symptoms? Listener question: "How have diagnostic criteria for ADHD changed over the years?" 22 💊 Why is the Adderall Shortage happening in 2023? 2 of 2
This is part two of explaining the Adderall crisis. In the last episode, we discussed the brief history of amphetamines and why there is an Adderall shortage today. Here's a quick recap.: • We learned that the natural stimulant Ephedra shortage in the 1920s likely caused the initial creation of synthetic amphetamines that we rely on to treat inattention and other conditions today. • We also learned that amphetamines started as a decongestant and nasal spray used to create the amphetamine we know today by accident. • We also learned that the short supply of amphetamine-based drugs in 2023 is very confusing since the supplies needed to make dextroamphetamine today are abundant because we switched to synthetic formulas about a hundred years ago. • Contradictions from the DEA, FDA, and drug manufacturers complicate official explanations of the current drought. • A post on Reddit broke the news of the Adderall shortage months later, and the FDA like felt pressured to make an official statement announcing the shortage. I say they likely felt pressured because when asked why they waited so long, their reply was that they didn't want to start a panic. • The FDA claims that we're experiencing a nationwide shortage because of a company called Teva. • Teva says they're experiencing problems because of a rising packaging line issue during covid. But then said the issue had been resolved and average production would resume in the summer of 2022, yet, here we are in the middle of 2023, and things seem to have seemingly become worse. • We learned that the DEA regulates the supplies and quotas of the raw materials used to make amphetamine. They say there is no shortage of amphetamine and that, in fact, there is an excess and leftover supply of raw materials from the previous quota. Still, they need to find out which company has it. 21 💊 Why is the Adderall Shortage happening in 2023? 1 of 2
Where does Adderall come from? The decongestant properties of amphetamine were discovered by accident in the 1920s. In 1927, a Romanian chemist named Lazăr Edeleanu synthesized amphetamine for the first time, but he did not recognize its stimulant properties. Instead, he used it to create a nasal decongestant called Benzedrine. Edeleanu was looking for a synthetic substitute for ephedrine, a natural decongestant derived from the ephedra plant, which was in short supply then. He synthesized amphetamine by reacting phenylacetone with ammonia and reducing the resulting product with zinc and hydrochloric acid. During the 1930s and 1940s, amphetamines were prescribed by doctors and became a popular ingredient in many over-the-counter remedies. The military began using amphetamines to keep soldiers vigilant and diminish combat fatigue during World War II. It seems the only reason we have focus drugs like Ritalin, Adderall, and Vyvanse (at all) is partly because of the availability of natural ingredients used to make stimulants in the past and how difficult it was to maintain and distribute naturally derived ingredients with finite lifespans and supplies. That's why it is odd to me that the problem of scarcity we aimed to eliminate in the first place has returned after creating synthetic alternatives that work even better. How come there's a shortage of Adderall in 2023? The answer is confusing. - Binaural Beats Playlist - Abndtadhd.com

20 How to Start a business with ADHD
You spend one-third of your life sleeping, and you spend another third of your life working. Eight hours of sleep, eight hours of work. Within an entire day, you have just eight hours of your waking life to spend with yourself. With such little time, it's understandable why you stopped drawing, writing stories, podcasting, adhering to a healthy diet, drinking more water, trying to start a business, and more, especially if you have ADHD! As someone with neurodivergence, you may have struggled with setting and achieving goals. Whether completing a task at work or reaching a personal milestone, it can be challenging to stay focused and motivated with all of the other things life requires us to do. An actual statistic says if you have ADHD, you're three times more like to start a business than anyone else. There's something you have passion for, and out of all the jobs and classes that failed to grab your interest, I guarantee you've remained passionate about "something" all the while, so why aren't you doing that now? 19 How EMDR Therapy can be used with ADHD
The eye movements or other bilateral stimulation used in EMDR therapy are believed to facilitate communication between the brain's two hemispheres, which may help process traumatic memories more effectively. It was explained to me as calming down the part of your conscious brain that looks for stressors (amygdala and prefrontal cortex) and keeping it distracted enough to deal with things you may actively suppress. Francine Shapiro founded Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. She discovered it in 1987 while taking a walk in the park. At the time, Shapiro was experiencing personal distress. She noticed that her eye movements seemed to reduce the intensity of her negative emotions. Intrigued, she began experimenting with eye movements while recalling traumatic memories, and she found that the eye movements appeared to facilitate the processing of the memories. 18 History and science of Binaural Beats, and how to use them to focus with ADHD
Music is powerful and can evoke emotion and memories when people hear it. I'm 35 now, but whenever I put on the song "One Call Away" by Chingy, it immediately takes me back to feeling Seventeen again. It would be redundant to mention that music can make you want to move your body.; but have you ever associated music with work or focus? Okay, the first association with music is likely different from how it can make you more productive compared to all the feel-good properties it provides to the human experience. Whenever I listen to my favorite songs while sitting at my desk writing blogs and podcast episodes like this one, the last thing that will help me concentrate is a song with dense lyrics. Of course, instrumental music, like study beats or classical, is the best genre for making you pay attention, except for the type of music scientifically designed to help you concentrate. 17 How ADHD Differs in Men and Women 🤯
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects individuals of all ages and genders. It is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. While ADHD has historically been considered a disorder that predominantly affects boys and men, recent research has shown that ADHD symptoms in women can manifest differently than in men. Understanding these differences is crucial for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. The standard criteria for diagnosing behaviors associated with ADHD is a bit outdated. That's because it's explicitly designed to address neurodivergent symptoms in men and boys. As mentioned earlier, that's a problem, and let's talk about why. It's a typical O.G. ADHD symptom. Both men and women experience inattention, but as we'll find with all symptoms, The only difference is whether they express it internally or externally. For example, when it comes to inattention, women may need help overcoming procrastination, might experience difficulty starting tasks, and be more forgetful. Women may also need help keeping track of their belongings, engaging in conversations, not interrupting others, and maintaining routines. Men with ADHD, on the other hand, can be more prone to externalizing their inattention. They may struggle with impulsivity, distractibility, and difficulty with self-regulation. 16 How to Clean and Organize with ADHD
Cleaning and organizing can be daunting for anyone, but it can be incredibly challenging for people with ADHD. The combination of distractibility and impulsivity can make cleaning and organizing overwhelming and frustrating. However, with the right strategies, people with ADHD can successfully clean and organize their homes. A clean space is a happy space, and clutter tends to poorly affect my focus whenever my office is untidy. Even so, the thought of cleaning and organizing induces waves of anxiety and procrastination for me. It may be challenging, but there are scientifically proven benefits to having a clean environment. For example, a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2011 found that clutter in the visual field competes for attention, making it harder to focus and process information. Another study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology in 2013 found that an organized workspace improved performance on tasks requiring focus and mental stamina. Moreover, a messy workspace can also contribute to increased stress levels, which can further reduce productivity. A study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin in 2010 found that women who described their homes as cluttered or chaotic had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol than women who described their homes as restful or restorative. I say all of that to stress the importance of keeping a clean and tidy space. Try not to freak out. I know this entire monologue may be triggering for some of you, but overcoming the fear of controlling the chaos in your environment can significantly improve your ADHD symptoms. 15 High Achievers with ADHD
In grade school, you may notice you're different than your peers. You love to talk a lot, even when the teacher is talking. People might seem drawn to you. Who has time for homework? It's more fun to daydream. As you age, your sense of wonder isn't as appreciated as it was. It's expected of us all, at some point, to give up on our dreams. It's never said outright, but daydreaming out the window, both lose their charm and hall pass in our society beyond a certain age. I get it. It's a survival thing. How can you feed yourself if you're daydreaming at work? School is more of a boot camp to cement a hard fundamental truth deep into our skulls. Being an adult is not fun, and neurodivergent people have few satisfying career options. No matter how much educational programming we watch, the hours we spend in restrictive classrooms and cubicles, or how much fluoride we brush into our gums, we can't be swayed toward normalcy. I'm not trying to glorify ADHD or its symptoms by any means. Neurodivergence can be exhausting. Losing things, forgetting appointments, having the tendency toward chasing addiction, thriving only in the highs of life, and supplementing in any way possible during the lows. I'd about do anything sometimes to keep my mind from shutting down and becoming a force against me like it always does in the end. Given the circumstances, I still wouldn't trade it for anything. There's something special about neurodivergence, truly. When you do the research, you learn that the prevalence of ADHD is significantly higher amongst those who share ancestry with ancient people who migrated frequently. That tells me a lot. Perspective is everything, and now I wonder if ADHD is somehow a natural defense against the onset of homogeneous culture and its complacency-promoting tendencies instead of being a "screw-up." We are ancient nomads in modern times. Instead of fighting bears and hastily digging irrigation ditches by hand, today, we discover electricity and send people to the moon. It requires the same set of "muscles" to pursue tasks that reach beyond the stretches of human understanding. A bit ago, I published an article called "The Top 6 Fictional Characters Who Have ADHD". I had lots of fun, and it's entertaining, but I think it would've been much more empowering to do an article about real people with ADHD. So here it is, "Top 7 High Achievers with ADHD". Who remembers the movie, Limitless? It's not just entertaining but how I would describe taking a specific medication to treat my ADHD for the first time. The symptoms of ADHD can be overwhelming, and they can massively hinder job and personal life. It makes perfect sense to want to medicate for those reasons. 11 4 Tips if You've Just Been Diagnosed with Adult ADHD
How many kids with ADHD does it take to change a lightbulb? We’ve all heard the joke in school, but in the dawn of cancel culture, ADHD’ers remain an evergreen target for inappropriate jokes for some reason. Am I suggesting we try to “cancel” people who yell “Squirrel!” to imply someone has ADHD insensitively? No. But I think I figured out why alopecia isn’t funny and chronic distraction is (shoutout to Will Smith). It’s all about visibility. As a society, if we can’t see it, it’s often not real to us. With symptoms like depression, low-self esteem, a higher risk of suicide, and more frequent auto accidents, it’s clear that ADHD, for those who live with it, it’s not very funny. If you just found out you have ADHD, here are some things that would've helped me know sooner about the strange cognitive difference. ADHD affects about 4% of the population. It’s a neurological difference (neurodivergence) that makes it difficult to sustain focus on specific tasks for extended periods. Everyone misplaces their keys, but to be considered neurodivergent, these symptoms must persist for longer than six months and likely will have been present since childhood. 7 What Causes ADHD?
In 1999, a genetic make-up study was conducted on 2,320 people from 39 different groups at the University of Carolina-Irvine. The Mbuti tribe from Africa, the Hahn Chinese, and the North American Cheyenne natives were just a few. When they studied the migration patterns of their ancestors, they found that the groups with higher amounts of migration had a predominance of what scientists named “the long allele of the dopamine transmitter gene.” It’s a variant of the d4 receptor called 7 R. You don't need to understand all that; the point is scientists now say it’s a definitive precursor for ADHD (neurodivergence).
