EP.037 - Mayya // Musician in Mayya, Mild Universe, and Mae Powell's Band
Episode 37 – Mayya // Musician.Alright if there’s one thing about me that y’all know by now is that I fuck with San Francisco hard. This place fucking rips and our creative scene does too. And you know who backs me on that same energy? My homie Mayya. I can’t exactly recall when I met Mayya, but that’s kind of the beauty of it. I would see her around at house parties years ago and she’s been so integral in the local music scene here in San Francisco. Honestly, it’s kind of hard to imagine a scene without Mayya. She’s low-key a pillar and those who know - well, they fucking know. She’s got her own solo project, which kicks ass and is so uniquely her own, but she also plays bass in a handful of local bands too. So needless to say, Mayya’s got reach. What I love about Mayya is she kind of bridges the past and present for me, she’s has this like old school SF vibe but also is uniquely fresh and individualistic - in other words, she has a confident voice to her music and I love an artist who is just so uniquely themself. Ain’t no rocks in my shoes when I speak on Mayya! In this episode of BEDROOM™, Mayya shares about her upbringing in San Francisco and how she fell in love with making music. We talk about David Bowie and how freeing it can be to genre bend and genre blend. We also talk about the importance of having a wide array of different influences in the art one makes and how important it is to not be bound to one specific style. It might be good for marketing, but it sure ain’t good for the soul and the artistic allowance to feel free.Mayya then dishes out the scoop on her creative process and how she goes about writing and making her magical music. We talk about her collaborations with local musicians Spencer Noble and Sam Jones and the state of the current local music scene in San Francisco, what’s hot and what’s not. Mayya then shares some behind-the-scenes scoop on the upcoming album she’s recording and also talks about being part of Mae Powell’s band and Mild Universe, former BEDROOM™ alum.We then tap into a few listener-submitted questions, one from Zelma Stone, former BEDROOM™ alum and Los Angeles–based musician, and one from Chris Cohen, a Richmond-based musician who Mayya has toured with. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where Arshia and I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Mayya gives the fans what they want. Big shoutout to Mayya for coming on the pod. Welcome to the BEDROOM™, y’all. EP.036 - Donta Santistevan // Thrasher Magazine's Illustrator & Designer
Episode 36 – Donta Santistevan // Illustrator. Designer."The homie Donta has fulfilled the dream. He grew up in California, obsessed over the worlds of skateboarding and art, eventually went to art school, and after years of hard work has found himself at the intersection of art and skate heaven, working as an in-house Illustrator and Designer for The Mag aka The Bible aka Thrasher Magazine. He’s got styles for miles, talent for days, and a warm and friendly heart to boot. Donta’s illustrations are sick as fuck, full of color, and the dude is just such a nice guy. Needless to say, I’m a fan.In this episode of BEDROOM™, Donta shares a pivotal moment in his creative life, how he found himself in a bit of a rut in his late 20s, spending his time working at a cafe and freelancing on the side. After some self-reflection, he decided he wanted to shoot his shot and follow his dreams to make it in the world of skateboarding and get some official board graphics made. After all, you miss all the shots you don’t take, and my G was shooting full-court shots - eventually, he started making them! He tells the story of how he landed his first board graphic series for Ed Templeton’s iconic company: Toy Machine. From there, he talks about making board graphics for enjoi, Chico Brenes’ Central, and the Crail Camp’s own, Chocolate Skateboards. Donta then shares how he got the job at Thrasher and what it is he actually does over there. If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in the art department at Thrasher, listen up, because Donta dishes game. From there, we switch topics and Donta shares about his new art book, “Something Cheeky”, a collection of illustrations that capture the admiration of every curve, crease, and wiggle of the human body. It’s an illustrated book full of joyful and intimate moments, all turned into art. It’s 104 pages, hardcover, and if you want to snag a copy, it’s currently available at DONTASMA.COM. EP.035 - Fez Moreno // Poster Designer. Illustrator. ( Posters for Dead & Co, Kim Gordon, Kurt Vile, etc. )
Episode 35 – Fez Moreno // Poster Designer. Illustrator.“Fez Moreno is a concert poster god. He’ll probably cringe when he hears me say that, but it’s the truth. He’s picked up the metaphorical-baton from the old school 60s psychedelic masters like Rick Griffin and Stanley Mouse and brought it into the present, blending that lineage with his own unmistakable flavor. It’s no secret, that my dude Fez is in high demand for his incredible creations, all hand illustrated on paper like the good old days. Fez has made posters for legendary bands like Eagles, Beach Fossils, Hot Tuna, Kurt Vile, Ty Segall, Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr., Goose, Cat Power, and Dead & Company, and so many more. I’m genuinely stoked to share this conversation with one of my favorite poster artists. Fez Moreno - put some respect on his name, G!In this episode of BEDROOM™, Fez talks about his past life in Austin, Texas and how he eventually landed in San Francisco. He shares stories about creating liquid light shows for concerts and, of course, making concert posters, which is the definitive heartbeat of this episode. We go behind the scenes as Fez walks through his process for crafting the magical, psychedelic posters he’s known for. He also pulls back the curtain on the less glamorous side of the job, like printing and packing posters. And yes, there is a right way to pack a poster, and Fez gives a step-by-step breakdown for anyone coming up in the game. Fez opens up about his upcoming fine art plans and where he hopes to take his creative career beyond the poster world. We also get into his collaboration with Matt Cliff on a Topps Baseball Cards project, and talk about posters for The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Billy Strings, Kim Gordon, and more. Fez shares insight on dealing with overstepping clients and standing up for yourself in the wild world of being a self employed artist. We also tap into a few listener submitted questions, including one from Jordan Kamp of Kampground Designs, the Brooklyn based graphic and poster artist, and another from Andre Poise, illustrator and graphic designer, a fellow poster designer from the country of Georgia. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Fez gives the fans what they want. EP.034 - Krusty Wheatfield // Cartoonist. Artist.
Episode 34 – Krusty Wheatfield // Cartoonist. Artist.“Alright, first things first, let’s get it on record: I’m a fan of Krusty. Their art style is so raw and whimsical - there’s a whirlwind of relatability and humanity all within their little old line. Usually, their work is either absolutely full of color, where it just sort of explodes off the page, or it’s often just a single color, like black on white paper, and each approach has this entrancing aspect to it. It’s like yin-yang, I’m into both approaches and they each feed off of each other, creating the artist balance that is the work of Krusty Wheatfield. My guess for why I love their work so much is their subject matter. Krusty has this singular perspective and magical ability where they transform the small, usually unappreciated moments in our daily lives - the tiny, beautiful details - and they turn the spotlight on them. Their work gives me hope and honestly it rewards and reminds me with of an appreciation for life, the human experience, and how these little moments in our lives are actually the big moments. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Krusty and I talk about digital vs. analog drawing, how Krusty got into making comics, and the moral dilemmas of the modern artist when they get commissioned to work for corporations they may not believe in. We get into their schooling at UC Berkeley and the importance of finding community, self-publishing, making zines and comics, and entering the DIY world of the Bay Area underground scene. We talk about how absolutely fun the act of drawing is and how we just wish more people would practice it because of how fulfilling it is.Krusty then shares their experience teaching kids art and comics at The International School of San Francisco, as well as the long-term collaboration they’ve had with San Francisco’s very own punk godfather, V. Vale - writer and publisher of RE/Search Publications - which is possibly the only surviving ’70s punk publisher. We talk about Vale and Krusty’s joint residency in 2025 at Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin, and we also get the scoop on their recently published comic anthology, Search For Weird, which was released in France. We then tap into some listener-submitted questions from Justin Kohlberg, the cinematographer and filmmaker behind the musical project Moonrun. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Krusty gives the fans what they want. EP.033 - LaTajh Simmons-Weaver // Film Director, Writer, SFFILM Resident
Episode 33 – LaTajh Simmons-Weaver // Film Director & Writer“Sometimes I get suggestions for who should come on the BEDROOM™ Podcast, and LaTajh was someone multiple film homies kept requesting. We started following each other on the gram, and at one point I slid through with my classic inquiry. LaTajh was down, and I didn’t know what to expect, though their Instagram bio says “better offline, promise.” Well, the promise was delivered. LaTajh has such a warm presence, and I felt super comfortable around them. The first thing they said to me as they walked up my studio steps was “do you do hugs?” (I definitely do), and from there it was just a highly enjoyable time sharing this space, this episode, this conversation together. I’m a fan of their films, and I can’t wait to see their next move. I also love that they shouted out Monta Ellis - real ones know. There’s no doubt in my mind that LaTajh and their films will stun the world, so it was an honor to spend time with them in my studio and talk shop. LaTajh is rad and I think y’all will dig this joynt. In this episode of BEDROOM™, LaTajh and I talk about memes, Q&A’s at film events, their upbringing in Oakland, and the moment their uncle gifted them a camera and they fell in love with it. We reminisce about school critiques and how negative comments, even when justified, can fuel the fire to go harder in the creative paint. LaTajh shares the moment they were named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film and what comes with that accolade. We also talk about how they’re an SF Film Resident and how they won the Rainin Grant, the largest granting body for independent narrative feature films in the US.From there we dive into LaTajh’s short films and the themes they consistently explore: the rapid changes that come with gentrification, the question of what “home” really means, and the lingering curiosity of how Oakland might have evolved without displacement. What could Oakland have become?LaTajh then speaks on their current feature film project, No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds: A Queer Inclusive Memoir, which takes on the topic of the Oakland queer scene and how its radical politics can sometimes feed into cancel culture. We shift into a conversation about Companion, their short film that serves as an ode to the unspoken romance between cats and their humans, and we segue into what short films can do for a filmmaker’s career and how they can serve as stepping stones. From Companion, we move to Hold Me Close, a short film LaTajh co-directed with Aurora Brachman. The film premiered at Sundance and chronicles the power and complexity of the relationship between two queer Black womxn who experience the cycles of life’s joys and pains together in the home they share. We also tap into a few listener-submitted questions, one from Caitlyn Durkin, Film Producer, and another from Reina Lam, Film Producer. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and LaTajh gives the fans what they want. EP.032 - Madeleine Voge // Artist, Fantasy Writer, and Creative Director
Episode 32 – Madeleine Voge // Artist. Fantasy Writer. Creative Director.“A few months back, I was partaking in the classic, all-too-human ritual of doomscrolling when I stumbled upon a gem in the rough - a stylish, articulate, left-of-center online “it” girl talking about KidPix, the history of the Muni logo, retrofuturism, and gothic design. Her name was Madeleine. She was a creator and she lived in my phone. I liked her videos and kept scrolling. We’ve all been there - delighted by that one creator who actually makes doomscrolling feel worth it. Her videos had merit, a unique perspective, and they felt human - I learned something. It was pure - and it all existed between memes, brain rot, and the rest of the dumb noise on the modern day internet.Fast-forward a few days later, I’m minding my own business at a Music Poster Art Show I was part of, hosted by The Fillmore, and in walks Madeleine - straight out of my freaking phone and into real life. We hit it off immediately. I told her I loved her videos, she was down to come on the podcast, and here we are: our first big conversation. My takeaway? Madeleine is rad as fuck online - but even cooler in person. Dare I say ice cold cool? I dare. I’m stoked to share with you today’s conversation with the one and only Madeleine Voge.In this episode of BEDROOM™, Madeleine breaks down how Aura Bora - the sparkling water brand she co-founded with her husband, Paul - took the craft beverage market by storm. She shares the thinking behind Aura Bora’s branding and gives us a peek into her current design ventures with The Lads, the creative studio she co-runs with her friend and business partner, Jesse Howell. From there, we shift gears as Madeleine dives into her creative writing process and the book she’s been working on. We then go full nostalgia mode reminiscing about KidPix, 90s snacks, toys, and commercials - it’s a treat. Then we tap into some listener-submitted questions - one from The Lad, Jesse Howell, art director and illustrator, and another from Walker Lambert, graphic designer and illustrator. Madeleine shares her thoughts on social media virality and dishes out practical advice on landing more clients, opportunities, and exposure in the world of design and social media. She also talks about Fantasy Camp, her Substack project and internet hub for all things sci-fi and fantasy. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Madeleine gives the fans what they want. EP.031 - Emilio Villalba // Painter & Professor at Cañada College
Episode 31 – Emilio Villalba // Painter. Professor.“You know when you meet someone new and you just sorta hit it off and that person becomes your new favorite homie? Well that’s exactly how I felt after spending the afternoon talking to Emilio in my art studio. The dude is an absolute sweetheart of a human. He’s kind, eloquent, well spoken, stylish to boot, and his perspective on painting is layered, honest, and coated in authenticity. Emilio is a phenomenal painter. He’s currently represented by Dolby Chadwick Gallery here in San Francisco. But accolades and talent aside, what impresses me most about Emilio is his genuine warmth. I literally met dude for the first time and by the end of our recording it was like we’ve known each other for years. That’s what fascinates me podcasting and the art of conversation: sometimes it can feel like a game of tug-o-war and sometimes it feels like you’re floating freely down a river. With Emilio, we were cold chillin and gliding along. Emilio - the new homie. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Emilio talks about his upbringing in Orange County and his time in the Los Angeles animation industry, working on big-time commercials and movies before realizing it just wasn’t for him. We dive into his decision to move up north to San Francisco and what he’s up to now: being a full-time art professor at Cañada College while balancing his personal painting practice. Speaking of his practice, Emilio breaks down his process, and what a treat that is. If you’ve ever wanted a peek inside an artist’s mind, this episode’s for you.We get into the yin and yang of art medium hierarchy: is one medium really more superior than another? I yap and share my thoughts and Emilio shares his. Then we tap into some listener-submitted questions: one from Jeff Cheung, artist and founder of Unity + There Skateboards; another from Chad O’Conner, music aficionado, DJ, and vintage connoisseur; and lastly, one from the GOAT himself, Corey Duffel, pro skater, Bay Area legend, vinyl lover, and founder of Adored Skateboards. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Emilio gives the fans what they want. EP.030 - James Wavey // Musician based in San Francisco
Episode 30 – James Wavey // Musician“His government name is Michael Bridgmon, but to all of us in the Bay Area music scene, we know him as the one and only James Wavey – and what a fitting name for dude. He’s about as fly as they come, and Wavey is only the tip of the descriptive iceberg that defines the aura he exudes. James is calm, cool, and collected, with a grounding presence. His musical career has organically grown and blossomed in the Bay, and each branch of his sound has its own unique appeal – I think that’s what I appreciate about his art. He’s down to experiment as an artist, shift up his sound, and stay self-aware of his range, which makes his genre-blending approach to music feel seamless, confident, and full of authorship. All in all, he’s a new homie to me, but nowhere near new to some of y’all, as he’s planted his sounds into the Bay’s musical community, and we’re proud to call him a local. I’m beyond amped to share today’s conversation with y’all. James Wavey is the truth and as he would put it: We’re making history. In this episode of BEDROOM™, James Wavey talks about his upbringing and how he found his love of music in the church. He shares about growing up in St. Louis and reflects on the power and influence of art, and how it magnetized him at a young age. Wavey speaks on how artists need to better understand the responsibility of the influence they hold over their audience. We talk about his art school days in Columbus, Ohio, and how he fell in love with different genres of music. Wavey shares about his move to the Bay and the birth of the James Wavey moniker. He gives props to Econo Jam Records for helping him establish a presence on their store shelves and talks about the importance of physical releases. From there, we dive into some listener-submitted questions—one from BEDROOM™ alum Sam Jones, musician in the band Mild Universe, and another from visual artist and local poster designer Galine Tumasyan. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Wavey gives the fans what they want. EP.029 - Harry Nordlinger // Cartoonist behind "Vacuum Decay"
Episode 29 – Harry Nordlinger // Cartoonist.“One of the unexpected side effects of creating the BEDROOM™ Podcast is that I feel more tuned in than ever to the creative talent pool of the Bay Area - and it’s thriving. Sure, it may be more expensive than ever to live here (a topic for another day), but that very pressure of surviving and thriving as an artist creates star-studded, diamond-like talent. And trust me, we’ve got some seriously bright artists in the 7x7 and beyond. One of these creative killers is my new friend - and now my personal favorite comic artist in San Francisco - Harry Nordlinger. For a couple of years, I’ve been admiring the hand-drawn and painted movie flyers for the Balboa Theater and 4 Star Theater. It turns out the flyers I’ve been so captivated by were mostly created by two artists: one named Trey Flanigan (who I definitely need to get on the pod), and today’s guest in the BEDROOM™ for episode #29 - the coolest cat in the Outer Avenues of the Richmond District - Harry Nordlinger.Harry is a cartoonist and puts out a horror comic called Vacuum Decay, and I swear, it’s one of my new favorite things. I’ve never really thought of myself as a “comic person,” but this one has me reconsidering. I picked up some issues at Mission: Comics & Art, and I’m infatuated. Harry’s work is dark - both in theme and tone - high-contrast in its inking, raw, original, and filled with influences from filmmaking and fringe culture. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Harry shares how he first got into making comics and the backstory of how his critically acclaimed horror anthology Vacuum Decay came to life. He gives insight into his working process, and we even get into a friendly debate about digital vs. analog art, comics, and inking. We talk shop about his tools of the trade, painting covers with gouache, and punk rock art icon Raymond Pettibon. Harry also drops some exclusive news about what to expect in Vacuum Decay Issue #8, as well as details on his current project, a comic called Lazer Quest. We touch on how many indie comic artists juggle day jobs to fund their work, and the challenges of balancing art-making with making rent. From there, we dive into some listener-submitted questions - including one from comic artist and BEDROOM™ alum Emma Munger, and another from Ashley Graham (also a BEDROOM™ alum), Art Director at The Fillmore, along with her partner and Harry’s friend, Ryan Andersen.I also ask Harry about his other comics, Shadows Over Springfield and Night Cruising, and he shares the backstories behind those projects. On top of that, Harry talks about his day job designing flyers and working as a projectionist at the beloved Balboa Theater in the Outer Richmond. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Harry gives the fans what they’re here for. EP.028 - Ashley Graham // Art Director at The Fillmore
Episode 28 – Ashley Graham // Art Director at The Fillmore“In San Francisco, first there was a guy named Bill Graham – ever heard of him? Famed concert promoter, legend of the city, basically responsible for so much of San Francisco’s iconic musical past. But fast-forward a few decades, and you know who holds one of the keys to the city’s scene now? Another Graham, the new homie, Ashley Graham, Art Director at The Fillmore Auditorium. Although there’s no familial relation to Bill, it’s kind of remarkable that they share a last name – and that both, in their own respective ways, have done their damn thing to shape the musical scene here in San Francisco. In my opinion, Ashley’s role is vital. She’s shepherding the visuals that tie into the concerts at The Fillmore. You know those free posters you get after a show? Ashley’s the one in charge of finding the poster artists and working with them to make those prints a reality. So next time you see her on the street, definitely say thank you. If you’re unfamiliar with how legendary The Fillmore posters are, I definitely recommend giving this episode a listen. Creating a poster for The Fillmore is a dream job for any visual artist – and I’m lucky to have done a few myself. I’m stoked to share today’s episode with you, where we dive into that process and into Ashley’s world. So much of the BEDROOM™ Podcast stems from my love of the arts, the Bay Area, and San Francisco – and Ashley hits all the marks when it comes to the kind of guests I’m looking to talk to. She’s kind, well-spoken, talented, and contributes a lot to the cultural scene of the city. Ashley fucking rips, and I’m glad to know her. Hell yeah Ashley! In this episode of BEDROOM™, Ashley shares how she landed the job as Art Director of The Fillmore. We rewind back in time to talk about her Washington roots and what it’s been like working for Live Nation – and, at one point, working for the legendary Sasquatch Music Festival. We dive into poster talk, heavy – Ashley shares all the fun insider info about what it’s like being the official curator of all the Fillmore show posters. She talks about how she goes about choosing artists for a show, and how she balances the visual history of the storied Fillmore’s past while ushering in the Fillmore visuals of the future. She shares some fun behind-the-scenes info on the poster-making process and shouts out some of her favorite posters she’s worked on. From there, we get into some listener-submitted questions – one from fellow poster artist Fez Moreno and one from comic artist / illustrator and BEDROOM™ alum Emma Munger. Then we talk about her side hustle, Rewind Presents, which she runs with her friend Chloe. They screen films at the Roxie Theater often paired with drag shows, and Ashley shares more about that ongoing event series. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions – and Ashley gives the fans what they want. EP.027 - The Breathing Room // San Francisco-based Band
Episode 27 - The Breathing Room // San Francisco-based Band“Sometimes I think about how lucky I am to be living in San Francisco and how with that fortune comes the added bonus of my creative friend group. For a city that’s supposedly got a “dying” art and music scene ( as defined by people who don’t actually live here ), I’m completely surrounded by a plethora of artists, all of which are just so kind, moral, wildly skilled, and beautifully unique people. My friends in The Breathing Room definitely hit all those marks – and then some. Each member of the band – Tori, Garrett, Sean, and Caleb – are such powerhouse musicians and just an overall solid humans. It’s been so fun watching their band grow, and I’m honored to have helped create some single art for them too. Having them on the pod has been a long time coming, and I’m stoked they finally came through to hang.In this episode of BEDROOM™, The Breathing Room shares their band origin story, including the moment Tori Leonhardt – one of my favorite musical friends in the city – joined as their drummer. We talk about their shared love of basketball and their take on the current health of San Francisco’s music scene. We get into the nitty-gritty, and I get a little pushy grilling them on why mixing and mastering takes so long. We also dig into the role genre plays in the age of the algorithm. Later, BEDROOM™ alum Nico Peña ( of the band PEÑA ) drops in with a listener-submitted question. The band breaks down their new song “Blue” and how it came to be, shares some of their favorite shows they’ve played, and gives us a glimpse into what’s coming next for The Breathing Room. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and The Breathing Room gives the fans what they want. Episode 26 - Cheyne Ellett // Artist.“Cheyne Ellett, Ellett Cheyne – backwards or forwards, no matter how you say it, the man exudes talent and brings a straight up unique and original vision to his art. Cheyne has been holding it down in Pomona for years and is one of a handful of my Southern California visual artist homies. He’s got a great vibe and so does the art he makes. It’s colorful, energetic, fun, and bursting with life. I’m hella hyped on this dude – hyped on his art, hyped on his love of Blink-182 and he just embodies the kind of artist I admire: someone who works across different mediums and carries their voice clearly throughout each one. In a world full of copycats, Cheyne is truly one of one. Anyone who knows him or his work loves him for exactly that. Go Cheyne, go!In this episode of BEDROOM™, Cheyne shares why he started making art in the first place and how he approaches his multi-faceted creative process – transitioning from mediums like painting and illustration to sculpture, murals, and installations. He talks about how he got into public art and mural making, and how that field has opened many doors to help fund his creative lifestyle and fuel his love of community. We talk about how physically draining the act of painting murals can be. We discuss burnout, and a recent installation he did called Overtime at Third Street Gallery. Cheyne reflects on how his colorful work is a direct response to the meek world we’ve inherited. He shares his dream skate company collab, and we wrap up by talking about his upcoming group show that he curated at The Language Mobilization Factory in Sierra Madre. It’s called All Together Now – a reminder that during dark times, we’ve got to celebrate the good things, like community and art gatherings. The show opens on June 14th and runs until July 5th.Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and Cheyne gives the fans what they want. EP.025 - Anthony Ferraro // Musician from Astronauts, etc. and Toro y Moi
Episode 25 - Anthony Ferraro // Musician.“His name is Anthony Ferraro – but a lot of people in the Bay call him Tony Peppers. He’s got a very successful musical act, band, moniker – whatever you want to call it – that goes by the name Astronauts Etc. But maybe you’re into the DJ or rave scene and you know him as Tony MF. Me? I’m just gonna call him the new homie. You see, Anthony – aka Tony, aka the new homie – is someone I’ve seen around for years. Though “seen” might be a bit misleading here. Anthony plays in my absolute favorite Bay Area-based band: Toro y Moi. For years, I watched him perform, live from my computer screen, thanks to a Toro y Moi concert called Live at Trona that I obsessively had on repeat a couple years back. Fast-forward a few years from there, I started realizing some of my friends were mutuals with Anthony. Fast-forward a few more, and I finally met him – along with his amazingly talented filmmaker wife Samantha Sartor – at the 4 Star Theater during a Scorsese double-feature on a Sunday afternoon. We chopped it up, became internet friends and now, we’re IRL friends. And today, y’all get to witness our first long-form conversation. Let me tell you – it was a good one. He’s definitely the new homie.Anthony is a wildly talented career musician. He’s traveled the world on tour, studied at UC Berkeley, lives in Vallejo, is about to open a bar, has great taste, and an even better voice. I’m stoked to share our little convo with you today. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Anthony talks about getting into music at a young age in Orange County and how he eventually made his move to the Bay. He shares about his college years and the key moments that led to him becoming a full-time musician. He talks about joining Chaz Bear’s musical project Toro y Moi, and what it's been like to play and tour with them over the last 12 years. We also dive into his solo projects – most notably Astronauts Etc. – and his more instrumental work under his full name. Anthony answers some listener-submitted questions – one from fellow East Bay musician and BEDROOM™ alum Hannah Van Loon (Tanukichan), and another from legendary film editor Caleb Stumpfl. He talks about making his piano-based album Gestures and shares some exciting news about the next phase of that project. We also get into the work he’s done composing for filmmakers like Tyler McPherron, Mancy Gant, and 26 Aries, and what he loves about creating music for film. Then, we dive into one of my favorite topics when talking to musicians: record labels – and what role they play in the modern era. Hint: I’m not the biggest fan. Finally, we wrap things up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and Anthony gives the fans what they want. EP.024 - Emma Munger // Illustrator & Cartoonist from Joshua Tree
Episode 24 - Emma Munger // Illustrator. Cartoonist.“Emma Munger is one hell of a talented artist, and if you aren’t already following her on Instagram, you definitely should be - she’s one of my favorite follows. Go check out her work now. I’ll wait. No, really, go now... Okay, so I don’t always start these little diary entries on BEDROOM™ by shamelessly plugging people’s work, but I find it necessary for y’all to understand her level of visual talent and unique vision. It’s certified real trap shit, for real. Bangers only. True visual treats. 100% game, hard in the paint, true Emma Munger gang shit. Okay, I’m fanning, but as Emma would say… I digress. For those of you who don’t know, Emma used to live in San Francisco but now lives in Joshua Tree. She’s known for her sassy pin-up drawings of her favorite pop culture characters, her amazing comics (which are my personal favorite), and the fact that she’s a top-tier fan of Frasier – like, probably a bigger Frasier fan than anyone you know. Wild. She’s created work for brands like Pottery Barn Kids and Comedy Central, designed bookplates for publishing giants like Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster, and to me – most legendarily – she used to work at Comix Experience here in San Francisco. She’s a fun hang, with a vibrant personality, and just an overall really pleasant and cool human. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Emma and I talk about how our respective illustration processes have changed since acquiring iPads. We dive into the slippery topic of Instagram and how social media can be a freaking scam for us artist folk. Emma shares personal stories about how even going viral sometimes doesn't lead to more work - so we ask ourselves: what’s the point of these apps? Emma also shares her love of drawing people, and we discuss her illustrated pin-ups. We dive into her work with the Balboa Theater in San Francisco and also go deep into Emma’s love of comics and her background in narrative work. Emma even answers a listener-submitted question from the one and only BEDROOM™ mutual friend, the artist and author, Adam JK.Finally, after all that, we wrap up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions and Emma gives the fans what they want. EP.023 - Zelma Stone // Musician based in Los Angeles
Episode 23 - Zelma Stone // Musician.“Zelma Stone is a remarkably talented person with an angelic voice and a very calming presence. I’m excited about this episode of BEDROOM™ because it’s sort of a first of its kind in a way - let me explain… You see, I put out a call to my community, asking who they’d like to see me talk to on this podcast, and a good friend of mine with immaculate taste suggested Zelma Stone. I looked into their work and was immediately down. Their music is raw and vulnerable, beautiful and real, honest and melodically charming. Needless to say, I’m a new and big fan of Zelma’s work, and I’m so grateful that my creative path has crossed theirs. Zelma has that special sauce, and it’s only a matter of time until they’re put on the pedestal for all to hear. I’m stoked and honored to be the one to share today’s interview with you.So here we are, live on the Internet, diving into a conversation between two people who had never even crossed paths despite having many, many mutual friends. This is what I love about the power of this podcast and my community - last week I didn’t even know this person, and this week I feel like I have a new friend and a new favorite musician to throw on repeat. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Zelma and I get candid and vulnerable. We talk about how hard it can be to live as an artist in this day and age, and how sometimes sharing our work can feel like an uphill battle - and yet we persist. Zelma talks about the concept of “demo-itis” and finding balance within the duality of their music. We talk about record labels, how we feel when we see musicians mess up while performing on stage, and how those mishaps can be beautiful. Zelma shares their love of music videos, and we dive into some of their past work. Zelma then walks us through the process of working with Ginger Root, Madeline Kenney, and Meernaa on the remixed version of her EP The Best (Remixed). Zelma then shares details about their upcoming tour with friend and LA-based musician Kaycie Satterfield. Finally, after all that, we wrap up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and Zelma gives the fans what they want. EP.022 - Joel Cherry Tree // Artist ( Musician & Graphic Artist )
Episode 22 - Joel Cherry Tree // Artist.“Joel Cherry Tree - what a name, right? I was first introduced to Joel by our mutual friend Karina on a music video set I was directing last year. Joel came out to support the video, and I think that’s a huge part of what he’s all about. He supports musicians he loves by being a band and tour manager, he supports brands like Honey TV with his unique illustration and graphic art style, and he supports all of his fans and friends in the scene with the music he offers us all—which really just touches on some of the most intimate and beautiful parts of being human. To me, Joel’s a really solid dude, and I was hyped to chop it up with him here in the studio. I think you’re gonna dig this conversation. Also, I’m really excited to announce that at the end of the pod we have an exclusive early release from his upcoming album, a song by the name of “Your Floor” - it’s such a beautiful song and I’m so hyped Joel is sharing this with all of us BEDROOM BOOS™! We love you Joel!In this episode of BEDROOM™, Joel talks about being a band and tour manager and how his deep involvement in music has opened up many doors for him in his creative life. He shares his thoughts on painting and how his daily routine has helped fuel his creative output. From there, we dive in early, with a listener-submitted question from BEDROOM™ Alumni Jesse Nyberg, the Los Angeles-based graphic designer. Joel talks about how his visual art style has evolved and then deep dives into why he loves drawing on a laptop trackpad. We discuss his upcoming album, JESUS, and Joel shares some behind-the-scenes details on his songwriting and music-making process. He also talks about collaborating with my dear friend, musician Mae Powell, who is featured on the upcoming album. Additionally, Joel shares insights into his involvement with Honey TV and Mom Jeans. Finally, after all that, we wrap up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and Joel gives the fans what they want. EP.021 - Jeremy McNamara // Director & DP
Episode 21 - Jeremy McNamara // Director. DP.“The filmmaking scene in the Bay Area is small, but that’s sort of the beauty of it—everyone is kind of like family. But within that community, there’s an even smaller scene of us who grew up skateboarding. The few of us in the Bay film scene who were obsessively serious about skateboarding all found our love of filmmaking through the avenue of making skate videos of our local crews. It’s a unique tradition within the subculture of skating, and if you lived, bled, and breathed that culture in your youth, I can guarantee that when you talk to someone who grew up doing the same shit you did, it’s like finding someone who can speak the same weird language on an alien planet. That’s where I bring in this episode’s guest, Jeremy McNamara. Originally, Jeremy and I just became friends on Instagram, but upon hanging out, it was clear to me that we speak that same alien language. I’m a huge fan of his work—he’s absolutely incredible at what he does—and he has the urge to become even better, like obsessively better, and that’s what fascinates me about him. That sort of inner drive he has is relatable, and it’s fun to listen to it come from someone else’s brain other than my own inner dialogue. I sit here just realizing how much the culture of skateboarding has given all of us, and for Jeremy, it’s given him a lot.In this episode of BEDROOM™, Jeremy talks about growing up skateboarding in the Bay Area and how, through the lens of skateboarding, he got into the world of filmmaking. We touch on the unspoken connectivity that skateboarders hold for each other worldwide and discuss the life lessons it teaches you when you’re out in the streets getting clips. He then shares how he got his first big break working for the famed DLXSF Distribution, filming for their in-house brands like Spitfire, Real, and Thunder, and getting to meet and work with some of his idols, like John Cardiel and Guy Mariano. We talk about his film “The Skatepark on Treasure Island”, which chronicles the story of an illegally constructed skatepark on San Francisco's Treasure Island. From there, he shares how, at the ripe age of 25, he decided to grow past skateboarding and challenge himself in new lanes of filmmaking, pivoting into the world of commercial and documentary filmmaking. We discuss his short doc “Carl” and dive into the collaborative films he’s made on San Francisco-based artist Jeremy Fish, documenting Fish’s unique art residency with the San Francisco Giants. Jeremy then talks about the commercial work he’s done and how that differs from the DIY filmmaking of his youth. From there, we dive into some listener-submitted questions from BEDROOM™ friends—the film coloring god Sean Wells of Roast n’ Post and BEDROOM™ alumni, directing god Mike Jacobs of Strike Anywhere Productions. Finally, after all that, we wrap up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and Jeremy gives the fans what they want. EP.020 - Salami Rose Joe Louis // Musician & Producer
Episode 20 - Salami Rose Joe Louis // Musician. Producer.“Join me as we take another trip down south for the second episode in a row, from the Bay to LA, to chop it up with my new homie, Lindsay Olsen, aka Salami Rose Joe Louis. She’s a genre-traveling multi-instrumentalist, musician, and producer. She’s dropped a whole magical crate full of amazing music, insanely colorful remixes, and has somehow crafted an incredibly unique sound. A recent favorite of mine is her spectacular live performance video on the Live on KEXP series. I’ve known about Lindsay’s musical project for some years now, recognizing how much of a pillar she was in the Bay Area underground scene, and thanks to my friend and BEDROOM™ alumni, Sarah Simka Jaffe, I was finally able to get her on the pod.In this episode of BEDROOM™, Lindsay talks about her love for the Bay and how the Bay Area helped sculpt her musical project. We then discuss how financially difficult it is to be a full-time musician/artist—the amount of transparency on this topic alone is worth a listen. As we continue through the pod, Frodo Baggins may or may not make an appearance, and we talk about the Light Phone—by the way, holler at me, Light Phone, for the freaking sponsorship!! We dive into her future musical and personal plans. Lindsay spits mad game about the DAW she uses for recording music, and we even talk about her remixes for Pearl & The Oysters and don’t forget to mention the collaborative track she did with Toro y Moi. Dikembe Mutombo gets his flowers, and we shoot into space with a discussion on science fiction. My robot makes some silly—and educational—remarks, and from there, we dive into some listener-submitted questions from BEDROOM™ friends and musicians Garrett Barley and Mae Powell. EP.019 - Jesse Nyberg // Graphic Designer & Content Creator
Episode 19 - Jesse Nyberg // Graphic Designer. Content Creator.“Join me as we take a trip down south, from the Bay to LA, to chop it up with my new homie, Jesse Nyberg. Jesse is part graphic design phenom and part content creator extraordinaire. His design work focuses heavily on typography, texture, and layout, blending the sensibilities of two completely contrasting worlds: traditional Swiss design and the more DIY, post-modern and anti-design movement. His creative voice is loud and clear, and he’s created some pretty cool stuff for clients like Decca Records, Western Digital, Creator Camps, and more. I discovered Jesse through his YouTube channel, and his video work in that space is just as prolific. If you're into watching videos about graphic design, I highly recommend checking out his channel. In this episode of BEDROOM™, we talk about how Jesse got started with making videos on YouTube, how he combats burnout with self-initiated design projects. Jesse shares how he balances his life as a content creator and as a graphic designer. We then dive into some of his series-based design projects, like his Hardcore Alphabet Album Cover Series, where he designed a different hardcore album cover for each letter of the alphabet, and his Blues Legends Poster Design Series, a collection of 20 posters honoring his favorite blues artists. We also discuss the harshness of people who gate-keep subcultures and information as a whole, and how that can stunt the growth of the very thing they’re trying to protect. Jesse also shares insights about his podcast project, The Jesse Nyberg Podcast, where he recorded 96 episodes. He talks about his design ambitions with the launch of his new studio, Cuesta Studio. From there, we dive into some listener-submitted questions from BEDROOM™ friend Joel Kirschenbaum (aka Joel Cherry Tree). And finally, after all that, we wrap up with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and Jesse gives the fans what they want. EP.018 - Tanukichan ( Hannah van Loon ) // Musician & Woodworker
Episode 18 - Tanukichan // Musician. Woodworker.“It’s Tanukichan season, y’all! For those who don’t know, Tanukichan is the solo project of classically trained Bay Area native Hannah van Loon. This is an episode I’m really hyped about because, well, to put it simply, I’m a huge fan of Hannah’s music. Her 2023 LP “Gizmo” and her latest drop, the 2024 EP “Circles”, are on heavy rotation for me. The combination of Hannah’s voice, the instrumentation and musicality of her compositions, and the distortion is just a freaking chef’s kiss to my ears. Hannah has opened for bands like Alvvays, Alex G, and Melanie Martinez, and a couple of months back, I saw her headline a show at The Independent with another band I love, Glixen. Hannah and I were introduced by a mutual friend last year, and we sparked up our friendship through collaboration. I designed some posters and edited some social media promos for her Circles tour. It’s always so fun and cute to make a new friend, and as much fun as we had on the pod, off the pod was even more of a blast. All in all, she’s a really fun and cool person with an extreme amount of talent. Yay, Hannah! In this episode of BEDROOM™, Hannah talks about the origin of forming Tanukichan, signing with Company Records, and how her collaborations with Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi helped shape her distinctive sound. She dishes some behind-the-scenes scoop on her songwriting process and how she goes about making music and finding inspiration. We also dive into a more unexpected topic: her other big love, woodworking. She shares the scoop on which company makes the best power tools—totally huge BEDROOM™ exclusive, by the way—and talks about the similarities between music making and woodworking. We then tackle some fears and talk about stage fright and what it’s like to play a show in front of 10,000 fans. From there, we dive into some epic listener-submitted questions from BEDROOM™ friends like Tyler McPherron, Tori Leonhardt, Alex Shen, and Samantha Sartor. And alas, after all of that, we end with a round of BEDROOM BANTER™, where I rapid-fire some classic BEDROOM™ questions, and Hannah gives the fans what they want. EP.017 - Andrew Fairclough // Illustrator & Founder of True Grit Texture Supply
Episode 17 - Andrew Fairclough // Illustrator. Designer. Founder."Andrew Fairclough is my Australian homie, and as the Aussies so perfectly put it, the dude’s a LEGEND, mate. He’s an accomplished visual artist who has worked with major clients like Miller Lite, Rolling Stone, Billabong, and ESPN Magazine. His work draws inspiration from mid-century spot illustrations, vintage sci-fi, comics, and the textured beauty of degraded print. If you’re not familiar with his artwork, you might know him for the company he founded: True Grit Texture Supply.True Grit is a company that produces high-quality digital brushes, textures, and effects, enabling artists working in digital programs to create top-tier work. It’s no secret that Andrew’s brushes are some of the best in the business. In November of 2022, Andrew released a pack called “Kolormarc,” and I had the privilege of collaborating with him on it, creating some of the key art for the pack. The Kolormarc digital brushes are designed to emulate alcohol-based markers. After watching the “Raindrop” music video by Hot Flash Heat Wave, which I co-directed and hand-animated with Copic markers, Andrew reached out and we became friends. He eventually invited me to test out the digital version of those markers. And let me tell you - these things are a freaking blast to use!In this episode of BEDROOM™, Andrew talks about his journey from business school to the creative world of graphic design. He shares how his business background helped fuel his creative entrepreneurship, but he also admits that the success of True Grit Texture Supply happened pretty organically. Andrew reflects on how the company grew out of a gap in the market and offers insights into hustle culture, explaining why chasing metrics like follower counts can actually hinder the growth of your project. We then geek out over the intricacies of how Andrew develops custom digital brushes and dive into the process behind it. We also discuss the criticism some digital artists face and why the medium shouldn’t define the artwork itself. From there, we explore Andrew’s work in the poster world, where he’s designed posters for bands like The Pixies, Blink-182, and Pearl Jam. We also chat about navigating the tricky world of working for exposure- when it’s worth it and how to make it work for you. Stay tuned for the end of the episode where Andrew shares some valuable advice for up-and-coming artists and drops a few hints about what’s dropping in the 2025 for True Grit releases.Big shout outs to Andrew for coming onto the pod. EP.016 - Mike Jacobs // Director of "Who Is Michael Jang?"
Episode 16 - Mike Jacobs // Director. Documentary Filmmaker."Mike Jacobs is one hell of a dude and one hell of a storyteller. In my opinion, he’s a titan of filmmaking here in the Bay Area. I know he wouldn’t agree with me on that statement, but that’s just because the guy is about as humble as they come - and that’s what makes him so alluring. He’s modest and unassuming in his demeanor, but boy does he has an incredible catalog of work to back up his game. It’s honestly extremely impressive. Having directed ESPN 30 for 30 documentary films, a documentary on Marvel for Disney+, and being a showrunner on a four-part Emmy-nominated documentary series for HBO Sports, he’s also made a myriad of award-winning short films, co-founded a successful production company, and has contributed extensively to the documentary filmmaking culture here in the Bay Area. For me, this was a special episode because Mike and I share a similar love for the intersection of filmmaking and sports. If either of those two subjects happen to interest you, this episode will be a golden one for your ears.In this episode of BEDROOM™, Mike shares what it was like growing up in Boulder, Colorado, moving to San Francisco, and making his first documentary film, Audience of One. We discuss meeting and collaborating with Barry Jenkins and forming Strike Anywhere Productions alongside co-founders Justin Barber and Ryan Simon. We go behind the scenes on the ESPN 30 for 30 short he directed, The High Five. We also talk about Gift of Gab, a short film portrait of iconic artist Timothy Parker from the hip-hop group Blackalicious, as well as the pressures surrounding artists and filmmakers in the modern day. We delve into the series he directed for Roku, Blackballed, which highlights the five days during the 2014 NBA playoffs when the Los Angeles Clippers led an unprecedented movement to hold racism accountable. We briefly touch on the documentary he did for Marvel, Marvel’s Behind the Mask, which premiered on Disney+. Then we dive into my favorite part of the episode—his most recent documentary, Who is Michael Jang?, which he made for PBS’s Independent Lens. In this episode Mike shares a lot of really cool behind-the-scenes insights from all of these projects and there’s a lot to be learned from his insights and a shit ton of inspiration to be gained as well.Big shout outs to Mike for coming onto the pod. EP.015 - Cole Hyland // Writer behind "Sunday Love Letters"
Episode 15 - Cole Hyland // Writer. Graphic Designer.--“Cole Hyland, wow, I love this person. She’s a stunner of a human, inside and out, and I honestly probably love her more than she even knows, to be quite honest. I feel magnetically inspired by her, and I always look forward to spending time with her. I feel like we’re on some fine wine type shit—like, as we both age, our conversations just get better and better, and I come away from our hangs liking this magical human more and more. This time was no exception.Cole was one of two artists who actually inspired me to make this podcast, the other being Leigh Ellexson. Their individual writings and acts of vulnerability, all shared online, helped me during a time when I was feeling quite down, and I think their work helped pick me up and assisted me in carving my own path of sharing online—this path being the BEDROOM Podcast you’re listening to here. I’ll always be grateful to her for her writings and will continue to be a fanboy. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Cole shares some behind the scenes of her ongoing writing project entitled “Sunday Love Letters,” which is a bi-monthly journal entry on Substack. Sunday Love Letters consists of existential ramblings, sparkly nostalgia, and constant reminders of the literal—and metaphorical—fresh air she (and we) all need in our lives. We discuss how sharing vulnerable thoughts online can actually help generate connection, and how, through the act of sharing, one can essentially transform sad thoughts that hurt us into acts of healing, helping us feel more grounded and confident in ourselves. We talk about Western normalities and the pressures placed upon women and young girls. We dish out some random-ass celebrity gossip about Bill Hader and Ali Wong, which essentially leads us down a rabbit hole about romance in the modern age, dating apps, makeup, and more. The theme of this episode is duality and how we, as humans, are just extremely complex. EP.014 - Jay Alvarez // Director of "Something's More Than One Thing"
Episode 14 - Jay Alvarez // Director. Writer.--“Jay Alvarez is someone I spent every day with in high school. We had the same advisory class, which most of you probably know better as homeroom. Over those four years, I really grew to love this dude. On the surface, Jay and I might have seemed like we belonged to different crowds in high school - him, more of the rebellious scholarly type; me, more of the social skateboarder. But the truth is, on the inside I relate to Jay on so many levels. We both come from the same small town, both grew up playing our respective sports, and at 18, we both left that town to move to bigger cities and dive deeper into our creative practices. Jay and I have that kind of friendship where, even if we don’t see or talk to each other for months - or sometimes even years - we always pick up right where we left off. Same old bullshit, same old us. It’s been incredible to watch his filmmaking career blossom, and I can’t wait to see where his work goes from here.In this episode of BEDROOM™, Jay and I reflect on our shared experience growing up in the small town of Sonoma. Jay talks about his love of writing and how he found his way into filmmaking. He also shares the story of winning the Special Jury Prize at the 2014 Slamdance Film Festival for his feature film “I Play With The Phrase Each Other” - an achievement that led to the legendary Russo Brothers championing him and supporting his career ever since. We discuss our ongoing collaborations through his feature films and we dive into the importance of visual design in filmmaking. Jay also shares behind-the-scenes stories from the making of his latest feature, “Something’s More Than One Thing”, and gives us a sneak peek into what he’s working on next. From there, the podcast takes a wild turn as we play "F*ck, Marry, Kill," and Jay tells the story of a staged kidnapping he orchestrated as a teenager. Yes, you read that right - it's a crazy story, and if you're sensitive to that kind of thing, you might want to skip that part. We also get into a heated round of Bedroom Banter, where Jay answers a rapid-fire series of questions, including sharing his absolute hatred for a certain overrated Hollywood writer. It's a doozy of an episode, filled with plenty of laughs, and I can’t wait for a future round two! Also, a quick heads-up: this episode was recorded earlier in the year, just before Jay was set to debut his latest feature at the Raindance Film Festival in London. Be sure to listen to the end of the episode, where Jay leaves a special audio message to recap about how the festival went, along with some other fun anecdotes.Big shout outs to Jay for coming onto the pod. EP.013 - Syra McCarthy // Actor from "Josephine" & Director of French Cassettes Music Videos
Episode 13 - Syra McCarthy // Actor. Director.--“Syra McCarthy is someone whose name I've heard mentioned a lot over the years. Within the Bay Area film industry, she is the definitive multidisciplinary unicorn who stands out from the crowd. Not only is she a highly successful actor who has starred in television shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Hulu’s The Dropout, but she’s also appeared in nearly every major company’s commercial you can think of. On top of all that, she’s a prolific film director as well. Actor and Director? Jeez Syra, are you talented much? She’s acted and directed in short and feature films, music videos, and commercials. We didn’t really get into it on the pod, but Syra is starring in an upcoming film called “Josephine”, written, directed, and produced by Beth de Araújo. Syra will be starring alongside Gemma Chan, Channing Tatum, and Philip Ettinger. For years, I’ve been hearing about her from friends - “Syra this” and “Syra that” - all this talk about how awesome she is and after finally spending some time with her in the Bedroom Studios, chopping it up, I now finally get the hype as to why she’s so freaking special. She’s a joy to be around and an overall cool, interesting, fascinating, and super fun person. Consider me officially part of the Syra McCarthy fan club! I’m recruiting all y’all to listen to this episode of BEDROOM™ and join in on the club too. Long live Syra!In this episode of BEDROOM™, Syra and I discuss the induction of AI in the filmmaking process, what it’s like to be an actor in the commercial world, the magical and sparkly power of collaboration in filmmaking, directing the French Cassettes music videos for their tracks “Medium Horny” and “White Noise,” directing a short film for the painter Heather Day, stories from her career in acting and directing, dealing with sexism in the film industry, the unorthodox world of hand modeling, and we wrap up with the longest round ever of Bedroom Banter, where Syra spills all of her secrets and gives a copious amount of shout-outs to her besties. Before I sign off here, I just wanted to shout out Soft Hold Collective, a Bay Area film directory of women & non-binary freelancers that Syra helped co-found and organize alongside her pal Baily Hopkins. EP.012 - Nico Peña // Musician from PEÑA
Episode 12 - Nico Peña // Musician.--“Nico Peña is a relatively new friend of mine but I can say without hesitation that I back dude 100%. Although we grew up on opposite sides of the country, we did both grew up skateboarding and it always amazes me how easy it is for people like us to connect and to do so just instantly. We have a world full of relatable references and parallel experiences to speak on. Nico’s a freaking sweetie pie of a dude, a very cool guy with really great taste and is someone that I hope to spend more time with. If you haven’t listened to his music, check out his latest album “Para Ti” by PEÑA. He’s making some really groovy bops. In this episode of BEDROOM™, Nico and I discuss the significance of embracing and asserting your own creative and personal identity. Nico shares how local San Francisco bands like The Breathing Room and Mild Universe inspired him to form his own band, while also touching on the unfortunate trend of SF bands relocating to LA once they gain a bit of recognition. We reminisce about his early days skateboarding in New Jersey and how he partly discovered his passion for music through playing the video game Guitar Hero.Nico also gives us a sneak peek into the upcoming Title Fight cover show he’ll be performing at The Warehouse. We discuss the current music industry trend of releasing three singles in advance of an LP and share our thoughts on its impact. Nico reveals the sounds we can expect from the next PEÑA album, and we wrap up with a fun round of Bedroom Banter, where he shares who his favorite Bay Area musicians are. EP.011 - Jeremy Summer // Produer & Co-Founder of Little Moving Pictures
Episode 11 - Jeremy Summer // Film Producer. Co-Founder of Little Moving Pictures.--“Jeremy Summer is my freaking guy. He is someone I am extremely grateful for - period. I also know that I share this same gratefulness, this same sentiment, etc., with just so many of my peers in the in the Bay Area film industry. You see, in my own creative life, he has been a patron, a creative enabler, a conductor of talent to support my film projects, and an extremely wise professional who has helped me grow, more than he most likely knows. Our relationship began in a professional context in 2018, working on a music video that he produced / I directed, but very quickly blossomed into a friendship. He’s chill, calm, witty, and undeniably good at what he does and I’m beyond proud to have made some projects alongside his company, Little Moving Pictures, that he co-founded the extremely talented film editor, Nathan Petty. Jeremy is the f*cking shit and I’m hyped to share our conversation. In this episode of BEDROOM™, we dive into the behind-the-scenes magic of the documentary he produced, “FOREVER BROTHERS,” which tells the inspiring story of the 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates - the team that made history by fielding the first all-minority starting lineup in Major League Baseball. We chat about his move to New York City in 2001 to attend NYU, where he became a concert junkie on a student budget, and how he landed a quirky job with a karaoke company producing his first commercial. Then there’s his adventurous stint in Costa Rica before he landed in San Francisco in 2007, determined to break into advertising. At just 22, he snagged a Project Manager position at Cutwater, worked some years there and eventually bopped around to different agencies while climbing the ranks to eventually become an Executive Producer. We’ll also celebrate ten years of Little Moving Pictures and speak on the magic that is “LMP” and wrap up with some fun Bedroom Banter! Big shout outs to Jeremy for coming onto the pod. EP.010 - Tyler McPherron // Director of Photography from Netflix's “Dirty Pop" & "K-Pop Idols" for Apple TV+
Episode 10 - Tyler McPherron // Director of Photography--"Tyler McPherron is someone I look up to. I can almost hear him laughing if he knew I felt this way, but the vibe I get when I’m around him—or even just thinking about him—is like he’s the cool upperclassman art dude I want to hang out with, and I’m the lowly freshman just desperately trying to be as cool as him. He’s clearly very talented and has hit some major career milestones, working with industry giants and becoming one of the most sought-after DPs in the Bay Area, but what really draws me to him are his humanity, grace, and overall demeanor. He’s gentle and smooth, with a genuinely authentic aura. Even though I initially feel nervous around him because I see him as that cool upperclassman, his calmness quickly disarms those feelings. I find myself fully engaged, able to explore and connect on what it’s like to be a professional in the creative industries. In short, I f*ck with Tyler. In this episode of Bedroom, I’m thrilled to catch up with Tyler and dive into a range of topics. We’ll explore how we handle anxiety on film sets, share our thoughts on perfectionism in the creative process, and discuss his short documentary "Creating Outer Peace," which tracks Chaz Bear (Toro y Moi) as he creates his album "Outer Peace." We’ll also cover Tyler’s photography work and his book "Collector’s Edition," and revisit his journey from rural Oregon to San Francisco’s film scene. From his early fascination with filmmaking in a middle school broadcasting class to his rise in the industry, we’ll talk about his experiences and collaborations with Little Moving Pictures, his work on Caleb Stumpfl’s "En Route: A Portrait of Kenny Hurtado," and his recent projects, including "K-Pop Idols" for Apple TV+, Netflix’s “Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam,” and the documentary “Who is Michael Jang?” directed by Michael Jacobs. EP.009 - Christopher Renfro // Winemaker behind 280 Project & Friend of a Friend Wine Shop
Episode 9 - Christopher Renfro // Farmer. Community Activist.--“Have you ever spotted a flyer outside a grocery store featuring someone who makes wine, only to unexpectedly meet that person the following week and forge a friendship? That’s exactly what happened to me with Christopher. From the moment we met, it’s been nothing but good vibes and mutual respect. Christopher is a natural leader and community advocate, making a remarkable impact on the city with his positive influence and ability to drive forward no matter the circumstances. He's also someone I painted for my 2023 art grant project "Legends of the 7x7", commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission, as one of my 49 favorite San Franciscans. He’s a farmer, a community activist, a winemaker, a shop owner, an educator, and a talented dude.Take a moment to listen as Chris shares his journey: growing up in Germany, his experiences living across the U.S. in places like Colorado, Texas, and Kentucky, his teenage troubles, moving to San Francisco, working his way up at American Apparel, and facing a high-profile legal battle due to racism. Hear about how he reevaluated his life goals, pursued a degree in horticulture, and launched The Two Eighty Project. Chris also delves into the positive impact of sharing resources, his efforts to improve San Francisco, and his wine shop, Friend of a Friend, in North Beach. Christopher’s story is incredibly inspiring and I’m grateful for the chance to connect with him over our shared love for this vibrant city.On a final note, I’m excited to share that just a couple of weeks ago, Christopher was recognized as one of Wine Enthusiast’s Future 40 Tastemakers for 2024. Absolutely insane. I couldn’t think of a better dude that this honor could have been bestowed to. Excuse my language, but Christopher Renfro is a mother f*ckin’ G. Earlier this year, Sarah and I teamed up for our first major music video project together, with me as Director and her as Cinematographer. Not gonna lie, we crushed it. EP.006 - Rob Schell // Skateboard Filmmaker & Movie Enthusiast
Episode 6 - Rob Schell // Skateboarder. Skateboard Filmmaker. Movie Enthusiast.--“First and foremost, Rob is the homie. He likes Dinosaur Jr., he’s a beast in the kitchen, has extremely good taste in all things related to the arts, and ultimately - and most importantly - he’s just an overall joy to be around. He’s a solid, educated, and relatable dude with a crystal-clear conscience and someone I truly enjoy kicking it with when our paths intersect. For me, what’s so fun about this episode is that he isn’t necessarily pitching anything. No products to sell, nothing regarding his career, but instead we’re talking about skateboarding. This is the first “themed” episode in the history of BEDROOM™. Sit back and listen to Rob talk about how we met, growing up in Indiana, multiplex theaters, the nostalgic allure of video stores, what we love and hate about cinephiles, finding skateboarding, becoming a skate filmer, and ultimately—the huge topic at hand for today’s episode: both of our Top 5 favorite skate videos of all time. If you grew up skateboarding and are in that late 20s to late 30s range, this episode is for you. If you didn’t, well, prepare to be extremely confused and potentially intrigued. EP.005 - Keri Shewmaker // Production Designer of No Vacation's "Days" & "Yam Yam" Music Videos
Episode 5 - Keri Shewmaker // Production Designer. Set Decorator. Filmmaker.--“In the world of film making, I’ve somehow found myself as a Director. One thing I’ve learned about this role is that it’s very important to surround yourself with key-role collaborators that you 100% trust in order to uphold your creative vision - and dare I say - make your creative vision even better than you imagined it, once it’s finally transformed into a physical, real-life set. In that very important role of Production Designer, whose task that is to do so, Keri Shewmaker is the person for me. My forever go-to collaborator that helps me ensure my creative set visions are fulfilled. Together, when working, we fit like a glove. But beyond being a collaborator, she’s more importantly: my friend. The kind of friend I can never stop talking to when we’re in each other’s presence. One of the first times we hung out was at a music video film festival in Oakland ( our video won by the way, we beat Shannon and The Clams’ video… just saying ) and we spent around 3 hours after the event had ended, in the cold, babbling to one another and having a great time by ourselves after everyone else had left. I always tell people that story when I talk about Keri and every time I’m around her, that’s the same vibe we return to - just two buds babbling on, talking shit, and enjoying each other’s company. But beyond being a friend and collaborator, she’s a fascinating person and I’m hyped to have her on the pod to talk about her life. Sit back and listen to Keri talk about growing up as rural kid in the California Delta, moving to San Francisco for college and graduating with a sociology degree, unexpectedly finding her way into working in the film industry, what she loves about set design, growing out of being a musician and growing into being a filmmaker, working on the No Vacation music videos “Yam Yam” and “Days”, directing the HXXS music video “Last Days of Magic”, her fascination with miniatures, and much, much more. EP.004 - Mild Universe // A San Francisco "Discodelic" Band
Episode 4 - Mild Universe // A San Francisco Band.--“What do you get when you combine Disco and Psychedelic? The answer is Discodelic. But what do you get when you combine Discodelic and San Francisco? I’ll tell you, you get the band Mild Universe! San Francisco’s Mild Universe is a dreamy dance-music band that combines funk, disco, jazz, and psychedelic music. Based in the city, the band formed in 2019 and is made up of a collective of musicians who all grew up in the Bay Area. For Episode 4 of Bedroom, I sat down with two members of Mild Universe: my personal friends, Sam Jones and Karina Alterman. Sit back and listen to Sam and Karina discuss the bands new album “Everything Must Change”, some behind the scenes stories of the new bops, the current status of the San Francisco music scene, and a lengthy session of Bedroom Banter. Both of these homies are such genuine people, with such warm and inviting energies, I just want to say it was an absolute pleasure to have them on the pod. To me they represent the kind of people who are great caretakers of the vibrant music scene here in San Francisco and I’m proud to call them my friends. EP.003 - Kel Troughton // Typography Designer & Type Teacher at Type West
Episode 3 - Kel Troughton // Type Designer. Lettering Artist. Graffiti Enthusiast. Educator.--“Back when I was a teenager and I fell in love with art making, the form that initially captivated me was graffiti. In the small town of Sonoma where I grew up there wasn’t much of a graffiti scene but there was one gem among the rough... spraying and tagging the county, the one and only: Kel Troughton. I remember one week seeing a piece of his under a bridge in Glen Ellen and a couple days later seeing one at the local youth hang-out spot called “The Shop”. His skill level blew my teenage mind. Due to our age difference, I never really saw him much, so he sort of became this elusive-like Bigfoot character to me. There were signs of his presence around town, I’d learn little tidbits bits about him, but I never really chopped it up and hung out with him. Now that I’m older, I finally have had the chance to become friends with Kel and learn about all the magnificent qualities that he possesses - and guess what? The dude doesn’t disappoint, he’s still just as talented as ever. Sit back and listen to the big homie talk about growing up in Hawaii and moving to the Bay Area, meeting Stan Lee as a kid and recreating the art inside of his comic books, how he became obsessed with graffiti, the cultural importance of magazines pre-internet, getting involved with a friend’s butcher shop and starting a decade plus gig of being the shop’s official sign writer, going to school to study typography, being an educational bridge between the worlds of graffiti and typography, his involvement with the Letterform Archive and curating a graffiti collection for them, becoming a typography teacher at the Type West postgraduate program, having his first typeface drop on Future Fonts, the type foundry he established called “Overlap”, the bygone era of internet blogs, his fascination with “civilian graffiti”, his favorite type designers, as well as the importance of finding your own lane within a creative community and contributing to the scene. EP.002 - DJ Basta // Hip Hop Producer from Macarthur Maze & Electric Colors
Episode 2 - DJ Basta // Producer. DJ. Beat Maker. Visual Artist. Teacher.--“DJ Basta, aka Nick Basta , was one of my earliest visual art idols. Growing up where we did in our little northern pocket of the Bay Area, Nick was somehow tapped-in to a larger cultural scene of the outlier arts. Things like Graffiti, Hip Hop, Reggae, Block Parties, they weren’t really big factors or pillars of where we came from, but somehow Nick learned about them and did what he does best: he taught us all and put us all on game. When I was a late-teenager, Nick was like this artistic and cultural messenger to me. He would go to the city and bring back little nuggets of cultural gold. Nick has always had this upper echelon taste and an extremely magnetic quality and and when you combine those two facets and add-in the special sauce of his willingness to teach and share, you get to experience someone who is wildly influential. Sit back and listen to this big homie talk about the beginning years of his art life in the North Bay, finding Graffiti, going to California College of the Arts, throwing block parties in Oakland, DJ’ing events for over a decade, transitioning from DJ’ing into producing beats, col2laborating with all sorts of musicians and emcees and singers, his involvement with his crews Macarthur Maze and The Electric Colors, having his music played at Golden State Warriors Games by fellow Macarthur Maze member DJ D Sharp, Macarthur Maze being featured on Sway’s Radio Show and having their work on the billboards of Times Square, the Roots and Branches record box project, Nick and I’s cassette tape collaboration projects “QQQ” and “222”, as well as just a plethora of wisdom and good vibes. EP.001 - Owen Tuttle // Patrick's High School Art Teacher & Overall Legend
Episode 1 - Owen Tuttle // Patrick's High School Art Teacher. Artist. Shepherd. Cowboy. Legend.--"Owen was my high school art teacher, but more than that he was my Master Yoda. When I was a wild and crazy senior in high school, Owen helped tame the beast that I was by assigning me a specialized curriculum. He, for some reason, saw a budding passion in me that I didn't even know existed yet. In his classroom, Owen ( Mr. Tuttle, at the time ) let me experiment on my own terms, independently from the rest, and throughout my senior year I began to discover this newly developed and passionate budding love for the art of making things and expressing oneself creatively. Fast-forward 18 years since then, I've been professionally working as the visual artist I always dreamed of becoming. Looking back, Owen had a lot to do with my initial jump and I'll always respect him for his encouragement and his non-authoritarian approach to his teachings. A lot of these episodes I'm recording are to share with you, the listener, but if I'm being honest... this one I recorded just for me. Sit back and listen to this legend talk about his run-ins with James Taylor and Jackie O, growing up in and around The University of Iowa, spending summers in Cape Cod, going to the San Francisco Art Institute and being taught by the famed painter Joan Brown, shepherding around California and Oregon, becoming an art teacher, and overall just how he's lived a varied, beautiful, and colorful life. I'm very stoked that Owen decided to come on to the pod for the inaugural episode, as it feels only right for him to be here at the beginning of a new creative path I am undertaking with this podcast joynt. Getting the chance to reunite with him and record some of his life's history was incredible and I feel absolutely honored. Big shout outs, always and forever, to Mr. Owen Tuttle.
