Integrating Authentically: Lessons from Stage, Studio & Social

This wrap-up centers what our guests taught us about real-world expression: a stage actor on technique as a path to truth; a metal/opera vocalist on honoring style while staying personal; a tattoo artist on meaning, placement, and consent; a strength/yoga coach on day-one presence and boundaries; and a social-media scholar on how audiences read authenticity over time. I pull their through-lines into two pocket tools—VOICE (expressing) and ANCHOR (sustaining)—but the heart of this episode is their stories, and how they help us tell ours with care. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

    Sustaining Authentically: The ANCHOR Checklist

When the stakes rise, this companion to VOICE focuses on keeping it true over time. I introduce ANCHOR (Alignment, Nervous system regulation, Community & context checks, Habits & rituals, Ongoing consent & boundaries, Repair & recalibration) and apply it to workplace crunch, family dinner boundaries, hard-news posts, and creative slumps. We cover the 90-second Anchor, exits for common pitfalls (authenticity fatigue, impulse-as-honesty, algorithmic drift, the tax of visibility), and simple weekly practices to stay grounded. Duration with dignity beats intensity without care. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

Branding Authentically: Algorithms, Audience Trust, and Sharing the Real (feat. Dr. Shanetta Pendleton)

Dr. Shanetta Pendleton is an assistant professor of strategic communications at Elon University and an authenticity scholar studying how organizations use social media to build genuine relationships with minority audiences. From Instagram statements to corporate policies, Dr. Pendleton maps the cues people use to judge perceived authenticity—why sustained action beats statements—and how to design pro-social authenticity that doesn’t just game the algorithm. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

Exercising Authentically: Movement, Resilience & Creating your Day One (feat. Maria Finnegan)

Maria Finnegan is on the faculty at Duke University’s Department of Health, Wellness & Physical Education, where she teaches activity-based courses and coaches across ages; she’s also a longtime yoga instructor. She shares how athletics gave her a fearless self, how Crohn’s shaped (but didn’t define) her path, and why “Day One” beats waiting for perfect conditions. Inclusive coaching, small habits, and yoga’s deeper principles (presence, moderation) make authenticity a practice—not a pose. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

Inking Authentically: Meaning, Visibility, and Intention (feat. Jessica Tippins)

Jessica Tippins is a North Carolina–based tattoo artist and owner of Five Studio, with a decade in graphic design and makeup artistry; she moved into permanent cosmetics in 2019 and expanded into tattooing in 2023. She explores tattoos as lasting self-expression—co-creating designs around a client’s “why” and choosing meaning over trend. We dig into placement-as-message (visible vs. private), boundaries and etiquette, and how “forever art” can support wellbeing. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

    Expressing Authentically: The VOICE Model

This insight episode turns authenticity into something you can do—at work, at home, online, and onstage. I introduce VOICE (Values made visible, Own your intention, Integrity of fit, Context-calibrated disclosure, Embodied delivery), then apply it to everyday scenes (conflict email, caregiving, charged posts, creative shares). We name common traps (authenticity theater, “I’m just being real,” algorithmic drift) and I leave you with five quick micro-practices. Authenticity isn’t perfection—it’s clear, responsible expression. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

Performing Authentically: Originality, Audience, and Claiming the Cover (feat. Tina Langevin)

Tina Langevin is a powerhouse vocalist and educator with training in voice performance & pedagogy whose career spans opera, musical theatre, rock, and heavy metal; she’s performed with NC Opera and Wilmington Opera and fronts projects from Heart Brigade to Crimson Steel (original metal). Tina breaks down the layers of being “authentic”—honoring style conventions, bringing your own story, and refusing boxes—whether you’re singing an original or a cover. She shows how intention, technique, and honest feeling travel across styles—and why authenticity isn’t perfection, just truth. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

Acting Authentically: The Value of Vulnerability on Stage and In Life (feat. Jeffrey Blair Cornell)

Jeffrey Blair Cornell, longtime UNC–Chapel Hill professor of dramatic art and a mainstay with PlayMakers Repertory Company (UNC’s resident professional theatre), has performed in 90+ productions while teaching acting, voice, and dramatic literature. He takes us behind the curtain of performance to explore authenticity’s paradox: pretending in order to be believed. From Willy Loman to classroom lessons, Jeffrey reflects on vulnerability, voice, and what it means to be real both on stage and in life. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

Season 2 Introduction: How We Express Who We Are

In this Season 2 kickoff, we carry last season’s framework of Know Yourself → Be Yourself → Evolve Yourself into the next frontier: expression. We move from knowing yourself to expressing yourself; onstage, online, in ink, and in motion. How does inner truth become something others can see, hear, or feel? Meet voices from live theatre, music, tattooing, movement, and social media as we explore five through-lines: intent vs. impact; medium matters; vulnerability threshold; evolving masks; and the algorithmic gaze. This episode of Being Authentic AF was produced by Brandon Talton. Original music written and performed by John Fichera.

In this season finale of Being Authentic AF, I reflect on the major themes, insights, and voices that shaped Season 1. On this episode of Being Authentic AF, we talk with Melanie Spencer about her authenticity journey in launching her food photography business: Morsel Envy. Melanie’s journey has actually involved the achievement of two childhood dreams: since 4th grade, she knew she wanted to be either a photographer or a flight attendant. After graduating college, she pursued both—spending seven years in the air while also working at a local portrait studio. As her family grew, her career shifted and she juggled a mix of creative and flexible jobs—including direct sales and photo editing. It wasn’t until 2021 that Melanie found what she describes as her most authentic fit: food photography for bloggers. What started with an online course and a Facebook ad quickly turned into client work and, ultimately, the launch of her business, Morsel Envy.
